Uploading tape from VCR to FCP

I want to upload a VHS tape from my VCR to my FCP...but I don't know how. Do I need a video converter box?

HOW?<<</div>
Starting from the beginning; you'll need to connect the analog outputs of a VHS playback device (VHS VCR) to the analog inputs of a qualified DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter - take your pick). Next connect the Firewire output of the DV device to your Mac. In FCP set Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and use Capture Now.
Depending on the DV device you elected to use, you may have to make some settings in the device's menu or change a switch here or there. Read the user's manual to find out how to do that for your particular device ... they aren't all the same. The goal is for the device to convert the incoming analog video and audio signal into an outgoing digital signal that you can capture with FCP or other program.
As mentioned above, many people use their DV camcorder for this purpose. Most DV camcorders (but not all) have that capability. If you have a DV camcorder, refer to the user's manual for details on what settings to make or if that particular model will even do it.

  • Importing VHS tape from VCR into iMovie

I'm trying to find out if it is possible to connect a VCR to my iMac and import the content from a VHS tape into iMovie in a similar way to connecting a camcorder to the iMac.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple discussions!!
I have done lots of this.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Grassvally ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09 also).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).

I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination.

  • Converting VHS tapes from VCR into iDVD

What is the easiest way to hook up a VCR to my iMac G5 and copy VHS video tapes to DVD. I am looking for the least expensive option. I only have a few VHS tapes that I need copied to DVD and do not want to spend a lot of money on equipment. I only have an standard VCR that hooks to a TV. Any help on this subject will be much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi a
or buy an analog to digital converting box like a Canopus.
I've got a Canopus ADVC 300 but there are cheaper like the
Canopus ADVC 55. But there are a lot of other brands to
    consider.

  • Import VHS Tape from VCR

    Hi all,
I have some old family tapes on vhs to import imto the mac.
in the past I used a canopus and imported to quicktime 7 with h.264 and all was good - but now it seems as though QT 7 is broken and won't import more than a few minutes
    https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=quicktime+7+maximum+duratio n&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
Basically I want to just do some basic clean up after then save them as h.264 for archiving
So what is the best way to import these videos now?
IMovie or final cut pro or Adobe premier or another app (I'm not very good at final cut or adobe)?

Use the Canopus to import into iMovie.

  • How to convert analog SD video from VCR tapes to DVD

What is the simplest way to convert analog SD video signals from VCR tapes for input to a mac intel mini so that I can create DVDs? Any help would be appreciated.
    Owen

not sure about doing it on a mac mini, but based on the costs of the equipment needed to do it and the time, your best bet is to take your vcr tapes to costco and let them transfer them to DVD...
then editing pieces of the dvd's to make a compilation would be fairly easy using any number of software tools for the mac.

  • Does anyone know how to upload footage from an SDHC to mac not using FCP or imovie?

Does anyone know how to upload footage from an SDHC card on a mac that doesn't involve using Final Cut Pro or iMovie? Those don't have many options for import/encoding settings. They also upload the clips into an enormous file size. I always have to re-export them in MPEG streamclip or Compressor to lower the file size and it's getting annoying. HELP!

Won't help the size methinks, but does Image Capture work?

  • How do I upload software from a CD ROM to an iPad?

I am thnking of buying an iPad but since the iPad does not have a CD drive (thanks to those who just told me) how do I upload software from a CD ROM to an iPad?
I have "Office for Macs" already on my desktop Mac but if I buy an iPad I will need it on that too.
    Thanks,
    MrDiction

Fold over four times.  Align with power/sync connector.  Tap gently with hammer.
Seriously, you need to copy the files on to your Mac and then transfer them to the appropriate app on the iPad.  This is the procedure for DATA files.
"Office for Mac" is a group of applications written for the Mac and will NOT function on an iPad.  Consequently, there is no way that you can get it onto the iPad.

  • Question about recording from VCR to Qosmio

I want to record my old personal Videos from VCR tapes to DVD using my Qosmio F10. I plug the VCR analogue output via a coax cable into the Qosmio TV aerial input and set up the Qosmio to recognize the VCR input as just another TV channel. It records onto the hard drive using MCE but the quality is poor compared to the original video tape. The colors and sound are ok but the pictures are lacking in detail and clarity.
Is there a setting on the Qosmio that I can use to improve the quality or is it the type of input I am using. My old VCR only has a coax and scart output and I can't get the scart output to input to the Qosmio.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi Nicky,
Thanks for the response. By Composite do you mean RGB output from the VCR?
    The Qosmio has 3 inputs:-
    1. conventional TV coax
    2. S Video
    3. iLink - firewire
There is no straight RGB input tho'
Can I use the iLink with a scart output from a VCR? The iLink works fine with my Camcorder.

  • Uploading Video from Sony Handycam

    Hi Dale:
    Welcome to discussions.
If you can't return the camera for a DV Tape camera with a firewire, then start here:

  • Getting material from dvd in fcp

    Hi!
I don´t know how to get material (I suppose digibeta from TV) in fcp. I only get Video and Audio seperated! Will the quality of the material be better, if I get the original digibeta material?
    Help!
    Mel

I'm not sure what your situation is there, Melanie. Is the material encoded onto a viewable DVD? Or a QuickTime stored on it as a DVDROM? If encoded as a DVD, then yes, you would be far better off getting the original source tapes. If the QuickTimes are stored on a DVDROM, be sure to drag them to your media HD before using them, they won't playback fast enough from the DVD.

  • I am no longer able to upload photos from iphoto to Facebook. The "publish" button is now "grayed out."  Any suggestions?

I am no longer able to upload photos from iphoto to Facebook. The "publish" button is now "grayed out."  Any suggestions?

The window doesn't automatically pop up now. When you plug the card reader in, you should see a 4th option on the lower bar of the photos app. I think it says camera. Tap on that then you can see and inport your photos.
If you are still having issues, try giving your iPad a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and try again. It won't hurt any data but can clear gliches.

  • Transfering Video 8 tape for editing in FCP

I'd like to bring some Video 8 tapes from a camcorder without a firewire port, into FCP to edit them. What should I have the footage converted into .... miniDV tape, Quicktime, DVD ??? Which will give the best results to work with?
    Thanks a lot
    monica

I now know NOT to have them converted to QuickTime (which is what someone suggested but I doubted that was the way to go).< </div>
That will work just fine. IN order for that to happen, someone has to capture them onto a Mac and then give you a disk fo the files. Nothing wrong with that at all.
    What you need to consider:
    a. Do you want a backup copy?
    b. What will you play them on that you can hook up to your Macintosh?
    c. What will you print them out to for release?

  • How to import music file from itunes to fcp?

thanks in advance. I burned from itunes a track on to a cd. then tried to upload from cd to fcp. it plays for about 5 seconds, then stops with error msgs:
    "turn off unlim rt"
    lower compression rate"
or "lower pref for real time audio track"
I'm new to fcp and am stuck. can't find help in the books either. any way to just lift a music file straight from itunes to fcp.
    thanks.

The "media drive" isn't a mac thing...it is a video editing thing. This is a drive that is separate from your main computer's hard drive where you store ALL of your captured footage, audio, video elements, graphics, still photos...everything you use in your video project. You should NOT be using your system drive for this.
This drive, on the low end, can be a firewire drive. 7200RPM at least.
You need to copy the music files OFF of the CD and onto your media drive...and you really should be organized about this. Organization is a HUGE part of video editing.

  • Capturing from VCR?

I'm currently making a showreel of my work, however some of it is on VHS. Is there anyway I can link a VCR to my Mac Book Pro and capture from it on FCP? If not can my Mac link to the VCR and turn the programmes into Quick Times or similar?

You'll need an I/O device and there are loads of them available but it may be that you already have one that is ideal for capture to edit purposes ... do you have a DV camera? If so then it probably has an AV in port to which you can send the output of your VCR, you can then pipe the DV output into your MBP via firewire and capture into FCP as DV.
In the loads of them category there is Blackmagic's aptly named Video Recorder: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/videorecorder/
its pretty cool but nowhere near as cool as Matrox's MXO2 Mini which is standout awesome:
