Upon disconnecting, iPod freezes?

As the subject states, when I disconnect my iPod from my computer, as in literally removing the cable, my iPod freezes. When I "eject" it from iTunes, or use "Safely Remove Hardware," it seems to work perfctly fine. But as soon as I actually manually disconnect it, it'll freeze. It doesn't matter if it's on or off, or playing a song. If I have it "off" or on sleep and disconnect it, it'll freeze and won't turn on. However, the moment I reconnect it, it's fine and charging, and I can do whatever to it on iTunes. Any ideas?

Exact same thing happens to me. I've tried uninstalling iTunes 7 and reinstalling it but it does the same thing. And now I cant even dwnload the older version of iTunes. Im lost. Its not even recognized on my computer anymore. Any suggestions?

  • 5th Gen iPod freezes on "Do Not Disconnect" screen when connected to Mac

My iPod freezes on the "Do Not Disconnect" screen (partially backlit) when I plug it into my computer. I have a G4 eMac with standard USB connections. The ipod firmware is up to date.
This freeze doesn't occur ALL the time....just occasionally. The iPod does not appear on my desktop or in iTunes when this happens. I have to wait until the iPod discharges its battery completely before I can use it again (this sometimes takes a couple of days!).
Does anyone have any ideas? Or is anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks....

Thanks for the replies.........I can't seem to find a solution to this....its annoying to say the least. Its just happened again this morning, though it's successfully sync'd on the last few occasions....it seems to be quite random.
One thing I've noticed is that it synced OK when iTunes wasn't open when I plugged it in. It appeared on the desktop, then I opened iTunes. This morning though it froze when iTunes was already open, so there may be an issue with iTunes (I updated this weekend to see if it was any different with the new version). I guess this will happen if you've got the ipod set to open iTunes automatically when connected too.
So, no solutions as yet.......I'm gonna get onto Apple to see if they have any answers. I'll get back to you all on this one.
PS: why no firewire capabilities on the new ipods?

  • IPod freeze upon connection to PC

Very frequently when I connect my 80gb iPod video to my PC, the iPod freezes at the "Do Not Disconnect Screen" and I have to disconnect it from my PC and reset it.
This has happened both when I have had iTunes open on my PC prior to connection and when I haven't had iTunes open.
After I disconnect the iPod and reset it, I can connect it and it works ok, but this is happening too frequently and I'd like to find out if there is a solution to the problem. Any suggestions?

That just happened - How do I reset the ipod? It's stuck on do not disconnect.

  • IPod Freezing when connected to computer

My problem seems to be similar to all of the other problems people are having with iTunes 7, but I couldn't find something the same as mine, so here's my problem. Whenever I connect my iPod to by Powerbook G4 (this is only after i installed iTunes 7, my ipod shows the 'Do Not Disconnect,' but freezes - the circle with the cross does not flash. I proceed to reset the iPod, after which I can connect to my computer with no problems (iTunes 7 is really annoying, but i assume an update soon?????).
Is my problem an issue with iTunes 7 and will be solved with the supposed update, or does anyone know what might be causing it.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Everyone.
I've been having the same problem. i have a 5G ipod.. i did the latest firmware update a while back, and the iTunes 7 update. After that, whenever i connect the ipod to a mac, i see the red circle with a line through, and its not flashing, then the ipod is locked up. only way to make it work is reset the ipod while its connected..
I tried a full restore, and that did not help.. then I pretty much gave up, and hoped that Apple would release new firmware.
In a last attempt of hope, i thought i would connect the ipod to my new makbook pro.. just to see if it was a problem with the imac. well, same again. ugh. rats..!
So, i tried a full restore from this 'new' computer..
This time, i noticed something different.. iTunes decided to download the firmware again, and re-flash the iPod.. (with the same version)
ah.. now it works !!! i went back to the imac.. connected it.. loaded up all my tunes.. and it works.. disconnect.. plug back in.. no freeze !!!!
So, it seems that if you can try another mac, and restore.. or indeed get the firmware to download again, and apply to the iPod.. it just might work !!!
Hope this helps some folks out!
    Cheers, Keith

  • Ipod freezes PC

When i connect my ipod to the pc it freezes(the explorer). I can't even access my stored data. When i disconnect the ipod, the explorer comes back. The ipod itself seems to be working good. I would appreciate some help, thanks.

Hi I am having similar problem, I have a docking Ipod (20 GB). After docking the Ipod it attempts to sync, but Itunes does not recognize the Ipod attached. After a couple of minutes, all open applications freeze up. Worse, a few seconds later and my system automatically reboots (Windows XP Pro). Then the whole system freezes again during the window loading screen (xp logo)and I have to disconnect Ipod and do a manual reboot to continue. I can use the IPod fine, but I can no longer sync it with my computer. I have tried the '5 Rs' and have reinstalled Itunes numerous times. I have also been reading on other forms of problems with Itunes 7.0-7.2 and have been trying to find a solution for over a month now. Unfortunately, I cannot find any similar post to my own. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

  • IPod freezes after updating to software version 1.2!!!

iPod freezes after updating to software version 1.2!!! After installing version 1.2 the "do not disconnect" screen took forever to disappear, so i just removed the cables and it still remained
like that, i restarted it manually, but now it's getting stuck when the apple logo appears...i reset it and when i finnally turns on, and i'm at the language tab, it freezes. can anyone help.!?

Apple just released firmware 1.2.1 for the ipod, you should try restoring your iPod again with that.

  • Ipod freezes while attempting to Synce

I just got a 80GB ipod classic. It was working fine untill last night when it froze while i was syncing it. whenver i plug it into my computer (macbook pro (10.4.10), the ipod recognizes that its been plugged in and the "do not disconnect" icon appears. this is the point where the ipod freezes. the computer never responds and the ipod icon does not appear in itues or as an external drive. I then disconnect the ipod and reset it which makes is work normal again (untill i try to sync).
I had been experimenting with putting text files on the ipod and i think that might be what caused the problem. Is there a way to restore teh ipod without doing it through itunes? it seems like this would solve the
    problem.
The ipod software is version 1.2.1
    thanks in advance

this sounds like a variation of the same problem from this "locked" thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5324590
since I could not reply there I wrote a message to the support team and am copying it here to encourage others to do the same, and as a guide for the type of language and attitude that is needed to get a response to this issue. (ie calling and yelling/cursing/threatening gets you nowhere) feel free to use any portions of it you wish in your own message, as this is an issue that apple needs to address on a large scale instead of one at a time returns for units that don't perform any better.
    "Dear Apple,
My 80 Gigabyte iPod Classic is freezing during navigation in ITunes, and seems to be following the pattern of other complaints from this forum on the Apple Support Discussions page http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5324590
I just purchased the iPod new from TigerDirect.com within the last two weeks, and am very disappointed with it's glitchy behavior in iTunes. I also have a 30GB iPod Video that I'm using with ITunes with absolutely no problems whatsoever. It seems that this is a widespread problem that would be best addressed with a firmware update or a recall, as telephone tech support and apple "genius bar" employees either don't know of the problem and have no resolution. Those that are aware consider it a small and isolated occurance (either innocently or by instruction from superiors). This is a serious issue when considering the relatively large value of a new iPod, the large share Apple currently has in the portable media device market, and what I'm sure is Apple's interest in continuing to lead this market with innovation and quality. The number one complaint people have with Microsoft is instability and crashing. Please don't ignore this problem and let Apple's reputation and quality drop to their level. Apple has a responsibility to fix this issue for all affected, and to do so quickly and courteously. Please forward this message to any and all superiors that may be able to resolve this issue when dead ends are met.
    Thank You"

  • IPod freezes as soon as i plug it in

My iPod freezes every time i plug it into my computer. it charges when i plug it into my printer but i cant get it to work on my computer so that i can restore it before it freezes. what should i do??? my iPod is not registered, but i do not think that would be the cause of it not working.

I have very recently bought ipod classic 80GB and i did register my ipod and was able to transfer a song via iTunes 7.5,but from the next day it started behave very strangely.Whenever i connect the ipod into my windows machine, the ipod freezes, dont even charge and it dont even start even if i disconnect it,i have to reset the ipod to protect it from the battery drain. Its been so pathetic that i haven't even listened to single song i fear that its going to be an expensive apple's paper weight.
I dont think the problem is with the laptop or the connector cables,as i tried using the laptop with another classic ipod which doesnot seems to exhibit any such strange behavior.
    Please help me to resolve.

  • IPod freezes on connect

Every time I connect my 3rd gen iPod to my computer (Powerbook G4 15" 1.25 GHz OS X 10.4.10, iTunes 7.5), my iPod freezes. I have to reset the iPod by holding the center button and the Menu button for a while, and then my iPod connects after it comes out of reset. Bit of a pain - doesn't seem right to have to reset it all the time. Anyone else seen this? This didn't use to happen, but I don't know what the change was that precipitated it. I'm on the latest iTunes 7.5. Not sure if that's when it started.

I was intrigued by your response because I'd tried a reset/reload and hadn't fixed it.
However, I've now just tried it using your method - restoring from Disk Mode - and my preliminary results are that it appears to resolve the problem.
For anyone else interested, the steps I took were:
    1) Charge the iPod up
    2) Reset the iPod (SELECT+MENU).
    3) When the Apple logo appears, release MENU and hold PLAY+SELECT to go to Disk Mode
    4) Connect iPod to PC, wait for iTunes to load & recognise it
    5) Use the "Restore" button to reset the iPod to factory settings. Accept all the "Are you sure?" nonsense
    6) Re-synchronise or copy your music/photos/videos back onto the iPod using iTunes
    7) Disconnect iPod
    8) Play some tunes, watch some videos etc
    8) Now re-connect the iPod. It should now synchronise nicely with iTunes rather than hanging....

  • Ipod freezes during sync then error that it cant read file...

A little pre-info... I have owned a black 30gb 5th gen (video) Ipod for a couple of years now. I plug it in fine, my computer recognizes it fine, Itunes works fine with it... everything works great.
I just bought another Ipod off ebay that is exact as mine except white- auction states the Ipod works fine, seller has awesome feedback, etc.. I bought this for a gift for my sister for Christmas. It is second hand, so warranty is expired.
I plug it in the computer, and first tried to transfer some normal text data via explorer. I had put this same data on my own black Ipod with no issues, words fine. The white? Lo and behold I get that "Data Cycle Redundancy" error during copy. My experience is that that has always meant that the original file is messed up, not the destination its being copied too... but in this case I know the original file(s) were/are ok.
And the Ipod freezes. So I safely unplug, and try to hard reset it. It wouldnt for a bit, and I noticed the Ipod was rather warm (but this might be because it was frozen for several minutes with the backlight still on as well). Finally I get it to reset. Same stuff happens again, again its hard to reset.
So then I decide screw it, forget adding the stuff via explorer, Ill just try to get the music on my computer at least, over via Itunes, after I first restore the Ipod.
Itunes opens... recognizes the Ipod... I go to copy music, and it copies until it essentially 'freezes'. I tried many times - its not a bad file because the same file would copy the other times Id try. It would freeze on any random file, during the write process.
Then Itunes comes up with this error:
"the ipod cannot be synced. the required file cannot be found"
I dont think this is referring to my files trying to be copied, they werent deleted or moved from their location since importing into the Itunes library. Im wondering if theres a system type file on the Ipod that Itunes speaks to as it transfers...and when the Ipod freezes... hence it cant be found...
At the same time I get this error from Itunes, I get a Windows XP bubble pop up that says:
"Delayed Write Failed - Windows was unable to save all the data for the file x. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
Now again, my computer/windows is NOT the issue. Its the Ipod.
All the advice I have searched says to fix things on my computer. That includes that Apple support page in regards to those errors - it points the finger at my USB ports, etc - and thats simply not the case. If it was, my other Ipod wouldnt be working either - nor would my flash drives.
    Its the white Ipod.
I saw one site suggest to format the Ipod via Windows first, then do the Itunes restore, but the Ipod froze and Windows couldnt format.
I went into Device Manager and compared the two Ipod settings, both share the same settings. They are not set on 'enable write cache'.
I have tested the HD via Diagnostics, and the BL blinked after the test, showing the HD passed... so right now I can only think of three things... a bad logic board perhaps, or the Ipod system files are corrupt somehow no matter how many times I do the restore... should I revert to an older update; is that even possible. Or the HD is bad after all and its just being missed in the test.
So now... I need help. Am I missing something important? Is it a simple fix... a corrupt file thats freezing the Ipod somewhere - or did I get a bad Ipod from the seller.
Its so close to Christmas, if there was some simple fix(instead of it being a bad HD) I could fix it myself, Id rather do that than go through the hassle of returns/refunds. Not to mention, its always a gamble how the seller will react. Will they help, or say its not a problem on their end and try to screw me... then Ill have to go through Paypal for reimbursement and that takes 90 days at least...

I wish I had good news but all I have is information. I have access to 4 5th gen ipods. 2 black 30s and 1 white 30 and 1 black 80. The one white and one of the blacks work and have worked flawlessly for the past two years. The other black 30 and 80 started having the issue mentioned here some time after upgrading to iTunes 8. I tried to lowlevel format the iPod drive to fix any issues and that didn't cure the problem. I bought a MacBook a couple of months ago and restored my ipod to Mac format and low and behold it would accept files again! However it wouldn't let me fill the ipod beyond about halfway, this was on both ipods. Now the ipods have become slowly less and less fillable. Seems like syncing rather than putting the songs on manually seems to help, but again its getting worse all the time. (the two ipods that don't have any problems belong to my girls and the problem ones belong to my son and i) <- Grasping at straws I know, but my son and I are constantly changing the songs, playlists, videos and such.
When I bought my Mac the guys at the Apple store were shocked that I was having this problem and practically begged me to bring it in so they could see what it wrong with it. I will post an update when i do that.

  • Ipod freezes when playing video through dock

Okay, this is a challenging one. I will be surprised if someone can help me figure this one out, but I will be very grateful!!
Picked up a brand new 60gb 5th generation video ipod the other day. 1.1 update already installed. Everything worked great. Was able to play videos through the AV dock, no problem, and was able to hook it up to the JBL stereo for the ipod, no problem.
Here is where it gets interesting. I took an avi video from my digital camera, and used Quicktime Pro to convert it into a .mov Apple Quicktime movie. I am using Windows XP. I then imported that .mov movie into itunes. Then I right clicked on the file and told itunes to convert it into the ipod format. I then hooked the ipod up to the computer, and the video was transferred to the ipod with no problems.
Then I was able to play the video with no problem on the ipod screen (not hooked up to the AV dock). Then I inserted the ipod into the AV dock that is hooked up to my tv. I played videos this way without a problem, before I loaded this new home made video. When I played the new video, I answered Yes to Tv Out, and right after that point my ipod froze up. No video played at all. Then I had to reset my ipod.
I tried this again several times, with the same result. This was now happening with regular videos that I downloaded from itunes. Also now, when I hooked the ipod up to the JBL stereo, and just tried to play a song, the ipod would freeze up. However, songs and videos play fine when the ipod is not hooked up to a dock.
It seems to me like my home made video somehow corrupted the software drivers for the port on the ipod.
Then to fix the problem, I finally had to do the dreaded RESTORE. I could not update the ipod, because I was already at version 1.1. I tried rolling back to an earlier version, but the updater told me that the update was not compatible with my ipod.
The RESTORE did fix the problem. The ipod was completely back to normal. I could hook it up to the JBL and the AV dock with no problems. Until...yes, I tried playing the home made video again. I just wanted to see if it was a fluke. Same problem came back....arrghhh!
He is another weird observation. I can start the video playing on the ipod, without it hooked up to the dock, and answer Yes to tv out. The video starts playing, then I can insert the ipod into the dock, while it is still playing, and the video plays fine on the tv, through the dock! Until the video finishes. Once the video finishes, the ipod freezes up again.
I wonder if this is a hardware problem, and I should just return my ipod. It seems like a software problem to me. I think if it is my home made video that is corrupting my ipod, I think itunes should be smart enough to not copy something to my ipod that is going to corrupt it.
Ha..ha...wow, sorry that was very long-winded. Anyone have any suggestions?
Dell Dimension 2.8ghz P4   Windows XP   2.25GB of RAM

All I can suggest is to re-encode the video as m4v with QT Pro, there might've been a problem in encoding. Also, try sending this same video (setting TV Out to Yes) with the iPod not plugged into the dock and with an Apple RCA cable, if you have one, hooked up to a TV. If that works, the dock connector might be damaged (unlikely) but it's possible. So once you've re-encoded, see if the dock situation works then. Good luck.

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried logging out of your account and back in? Or how about rebooting your computer to see if that helps?
I would also try resetting your iPod by pressing and holding the Center and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears. Then try ejecting the iPod again.
