I tried upgrading permissions but it did not help!? Can anyone tell me what is wrong? Thanks

Try
Reboot the computer, see if that fixes it.
Then try:
Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk and simply reinstalling OS X
Log in and update to 10.6.8
c boot off the 10.6 disk again and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk
reboot and all should be fine, except some third party programs that install kext files, those will have to be reinstalled from fresh sources.

Help center window shows "selected topic is currently unavailable"?

when i open help center, it shows the safari or mountain lion intro page but none of the articles download.
it says " selected topic is currently unavailable" my internet is connected and works for everything but the help window, please HELP!

I recommend persistence. It does that for me quite often as well, but the second or third attempts work.

Sometimes just closing and reopening the Help window will clear up the problem. If it doesn't, log out or restart the computer and try again. Otherwise, you may need to delete the Help cache.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

Hi that didn't work but I tried and highlighted one of the other options in the drop down box from the default one that was highlighted and that set the time right but I won't know if it fixed everything until some time passes. I get the message in quotes on everything when I selet Help from an application menu. I get a menu of help items but when I select an item from that menu, I get the message. I have gone to that same menu in another way(I don't remember how I got there. Maybe from 1to1) and the selection works. HOw can I overcome this?

I get it all the time - my mac mini came pre installed with mountain lion and it's never worked- i've tried everything - and now i've given up.

I recently reorganised the family iMac to having 3 accounts, rather than just 1. My wife has an account, I do, and there is an admin account. We have had a time capsule for a while (I think we got it a couple of months after launch). Its been great up to now. However since changing to the new set up, we keep getting an error message. Rather unhelpfully I've not written down the error message, but I hoped someone may have an idea what is going on.
I am in the process of erasing the disk and I am contemplating resetting it to the factory defaults. I use it as my wifi also.
Is there a known issue with the TC back up when using a machine with multiple accounts? I did a search on the forums (admittedly not a really in depth one), but saw nothing similar.
Would it be usefull to do a factory reset once the erase is finished?

What is a 403 Forbidden error message which I get on firefox, safari and chrome. I don't know if it is the website or something with my mac though everything else works fine.

IPhoto (9.6) No longer works after Yosemite Update! Please Help. The error message I get is below.

Error Message:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
I have performed the instructions above with the exception of the restoration from a backup.(Option/Command no longer yields a menu. Just the error message again). Really hoping there is a fix outside of the restoration since I have neglected to back up for some time.
P.S. I see that this is happening to others....I have another Mac to update to Yosemite and fear the same results.

Every time there is an update to anything someone somewhere has an issue. That's why backing up prior to updating is so important.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
