Upper half of my 24" has gone dim, seems burnt out, but it actually isn't

I primarily use my iMac to game, for which it excels at. Other than that, nothing much. These are the details on my display, below. The problem, when my display first comes on, everything is fine, it's all bright, but then suddenly, after about two seconds, the top half's brightness (it's not clear cut, it fades to the bottom half, being darkest at the top) cuts in half, maybe even down to 25%. If I turn the display off (sleep it, I mean), and wake it back up, it'll be fine for two more seconds, and return to being dark. This makes it pretty hard to game full screen. Not impossible, but it obscures quite a bit. This all happened about a year ago. I don't think I registered the applecare plan, but I do think I have it. I just lost the little box for it and everything, so I have no proof... Someone told me it costs $800 to fix this whole thing, when it seems obvious it's not the display but some other little part, like a $60 "inverter". But I know nothing about displays.
So, I'm not sure what to do about this, I don't want to pay too much to get it fixed, and I think it would be awesome if there were some software-related issue, but I doubt it. I find it so strange that it works for a moment and then doesn't. Like, there must be someway to circumnavigate it and keep the top half on... I have no idea, though. Any ideas?

Hello G M
Unfortunately it sounds like the upper back light has failed, if so then the only fix is to make an appointment at your local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider and have them replace the display.

  • The screen for my ipod touch 2nd ge has gone dim and i can barely see anything! what do i do?

the screen on my 2nd gen ipod went dim very suddenly and i can't get it to go bright again! i went on the brightness settings but it doesnt seem to make a difference...

Try the standard fixes to rule out a sftware problem:
    - Reset
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If you still have the problem than an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My iphone 5 flash light has gone dim.

My phone flash light turn on while taking pictures but it's too dim now

Most likely need to go to Apple for Warranty replacement. But first, try Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to restart itself, usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons. If still problem, Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer. If still problem, make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • My iPhone 4S screen has gone black, it is lit but black

Last Night, i was using my 4S which had battery and all of a sudden, it went black, the screen is still lit up but it is black, i tried charging it but nothing happened, pressing buttons does nothing also. When i plugged it into iTunes, the iPhone does not come up but when i unplug it, it tells me that it could not connect with the iPhone, i have not backed it up in a while. is there any way to save my things and fix this? could i leave the battery to die and hope it works?

try a hard reset. press and hold the home and power button at the same time until the apple logo appears. approx 10-15 seconds, see if that works

  • My iPad 3 screen has gone completely black and does not respond

MY iPad 3 screen has gone completely blank (blacked out) and does not respond to either of the power buttons.
    ANy suggestions?

If the battery is not flat, try a reset.
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider.

  • Sound/volume has gone on my iPad?

Sound has gone on my iPad 2, but works when using head phones? I've read all the tips and nothing has worked. I've checked the side switch, mute option on the home screen when you double click it, checked the settings, read most recommendations, blew in the sockets... Everything?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • Updated my 3gs to 5.0.1 and my battery life has gone from 1.5 days   to less than half a day with no Apps open - how can I roll this back to 5.0 until a fix comes out?

Since updating my 3GS to 5.0.1 my iphone battery has gone, overnight, from 1.5 days + (with multiple open Apps) to less than half a day to completely discharge from 100%.
I desperately need to roll this install back to 5.0 but there are no resources on the internet (or this site) which indicate how I would do that.
    Please help.

You cannot and should not go back to 5.0.
    A fix is coming soon

  • The screen has suddenly dimmed, how do i get it bright again?

the screen my iphone 3gs has suddenly gone dim, how do i get it bright again?

If you can see anything on the screen , go to Settings > Brightness and turn it up.  If that doesn't work, press and hold both the Home and Power buttons until the phone restarts.

  • Ibook screen has gone dark

I'm helping a friend with a G4 i-book, about 3 years old I think. Today, while working on it, the screen went black. I think it may have gone to sleep but I cannot know for sure. I pressed the F2 key checking to see if he had somehow turned down the brightness but no change. I took it to the window and can see the computer is awake. Using the light, and turning the laptop at a side angle, I can see folders, etc. I went to the dock and found system preferences and clicked on display. The brightness was about half way so I turned it up but the screen stayed just as dark, almost impossoble to see anything. We shut it down and restarted it and while I can see it is on and awake, the screen is so dark you cannot possibly use it or see what is there without holding it up to light with an odd angle.
I did do a search by many of the posts were about flickering or flashing dark. His screen has gone dark and while I can see things if I 'peer' carefully, the screen is black all the time.
    Any suggestions?

    Hey Michelle,
Most certainly this is a inverter cable issue. Usually they open up near the hinge point. I've repaired two that this happened to. I have also seen two that shorted to ground and took out a tiny fuse on the logic board so after I repaired the short I had to bridge the fuse w/ a fuse link.
Try moving the display up and down while it's on. If it comes on it's most certainly that cable.

  • Ch has gone dead apple store says its had its life at only just over a year old can thuis b right anybody out there had the same problem.

My ipod touch has gone dead, it is only 1 and half old, apple shop says it is just old and cant b repaired, surely it should last longer than this, anyone out there experienced same. really angry as I have just bought one for my grandson for this Xmas.

Like all products, especially electrical ones, some have short lifes.  Apple does not fix your broken iPod.  They will exchange it for a refurbished one it for $99, $149 or $199 depending upon the capacity.

  • UPPER HALF OF CAMERA SCREEN IS BLACK

WHY IS THE UPPER HALF OF MY CAMERA SCREEN  on my iPhone 6 BLACK?

    Hey janetfromhingham,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, half of the screen is black when using one of the cameras. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Get help with the camera on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
You see a closed lens or black screen
If you see a closed lens or black screen when you open the Camera app, try these steps:
Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
Force the app to close, then open the Camera app again.
Restart your device, then open the Camera app again.
If your device has a front and rear camera, try both cameras by tapping  (camera swap icon). If you see the closed lens or black screen on only one camera, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a good one,
    Mario

HELP HELP HELP PLEASE I REALLY NEED MY IPHONE.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If basic troubleshooting does not resolve, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.
Be aware that the iPhone warranty is NOT International.  You will need to either return to the US with the device and take it to Apple or ship it to someone you know in the US to take it to Apple.
