Upper layers partially disappear when lower layers are oriented

I have several layers of a website - each of which have 3D turned on and which were oriented to provide some perspective. I've noticed that when the layers are oriented, they tend to intersect each other - so I see some of one layer and some of another layer. I've also placed an animated graphic of a cursor on top of all the layers. When I reposition the cusor - and it moves into an area of the graphic below - it disappears.
It seems like there's a diagonal line running down the graphic and when images in layers above intersect with that area - they somehow diappear behing the oriented image below.
How can I prevent this from happening?
I was going to insert an image - but when I click the camera icon - all I get is a big grey box that says 'Insert Image' - but no way to select the image I want to insert. Very strange!

Your layers are intersecting because they are intersecting in 3D space. Look at a left or right view and you'll see the layers cutting into each other. If you want them not to intersect then you have to move them. The most common thing to do is to change the Z distance. It sounds like you don't understand 3D space. AE works like all 3D apps except that the layers are limited to 2D planes. If they intersect in the 3D world then they intersect. If one moves behind another then it is behind. The layer order does not make any difference unless you start inserting 2D layers or adjustment layers between 3D layers.
I have no idea what you mean when you say "I was going to insert an image - but when I click the camera icon - all I get is a big grey box that says 'Insert Image' -  . . ." because you don't insert images into After Effects, you import them to the Project panel and then you drag or add them to the timeline. There is no camera icon in AE that has an Import function. What exactly are you doing and what app are you using to Insert something by clicking on a camera icon. There are no Insert functions in After Effects.
I suggest you look for some basic AE tutorials on 3D space. There are dozens if not more that give you the basics.

  • Photoshop CS5.5 Layers partially disappear. Cannot get them back.

Adobe CS5.5 Photoshop running on Mac OS X.
This is a brand new installation, just purchased and installed last week, and this is the first graphic heavy task I have attempted using Photoshop CS5.5. I was working in a document (photo-manipulation) and eveyrthing was going very, very smoothly. I was using mostly Masks. The issue ocurred immediately after I tried to apply a Hue/Saturation effect to the topmost layer. All the layers experienced partial disappearing. Even though they appear whole in the layers tab, on the stage huge parts are missing.
    See this screenshot:
I tried to undo the Hue/Saturation, close Photoshop completely and reopen, and double checking the settings on each layer. I was saving as I went along but even closing without saving and re-opening the file did not help much. Most of the disppeared portions have returned, but there are still "chunks", sort to speak, that are "missing". I have spent about four hours on this piece so far, and I really do not want to have to go back and re-do the "missing" parts (that are not really missing just not showing up). And the layer with the knight is not supposed to be black, Photoshop did that all on its own. O.o
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to get all of each layer back visible? I have used Photoshop CS2 and I have Photoshop CS4 on my other computer, but I have never had this happen in any of the earlier versions. And this being the first time I used Photoshop CS5.5 for more than just saving screenshots... Yeah. Any ideas?
    ~Jacquelyn

On your recommendation, I tried turning off the OpenGL and restarted Photoshop. I also checked the blend settings. No change. I am beginning to think that perhaps the missing "chunks" on the various layers were somehow deleted. Though I did not select nor delete anything. It is very curious. I wish I knew what happened (or what I did by accident) so I can prevent this type of thing from happening in the future.
Anyway, I spent a few extra hours re-doing the parts that were "missing" and now the piece is finished. http://fav.me/d49b0sz

  • Images in Layers Partially Disappeared CS6

    Hi everyone,
How can I restore the partially disappeared images?
Detail : I have a photoshop file that contained 15 layers with completely different images on each. Then, all images partially disappeared except for the background image. The long vertical image piece on the right side is part of a layer that is not background image.
I unchecked 'Use Graphic Prosessor' (Preference>General>Performance) to see if it was Graphic Card's problem but it didn't solve the problem.
    Please help!!

    Hi csubele,
So I did click on the little page that appears beside the image in the layers panel while pressing shift, and red x appeared and 13 out of 15 images showed up again.  Some of the images disappeared completely, and some of them damaged (colour distortion). Do you know how to solve this problem?

  • Layers palette disappears when I click on my project

I looked but can't find a help reference that addresses this problem.
The layers palette disappears everytime I click on my project. I want it to stay visible, without having to click F7, or go to Windows...Layers every time! How do I tell it to stay visible? It used to, and now it doesn't.
    Thank you!
    Rebecca

I just figured it out (several hours later).
I had to drag the tab off the palette and onto the desktop and there it is!!
Sorry for the bother. Thanks for the ideas, though.

  • New to Flash - Imported layers contain contents of lower layers?

    Hello.
I have just started using flash, and know next to nothing about some of its functions, so I apologise if I appear to ask questions with obvious answers.
Anyway, I am attempting to add animation to a previously created layered image, which I am importing from a .psd. The image is structured so that different layers contain translucent masks for objects below - e.g., an upper layer might contain a purple tint gradient which is overlayed on the layers below. I can open up this image in photoshop and it behaves as you might expect, but I'm having difficulties importing the image into flash. When I do, for some reason, the layer contents are modified so that some layers contain not only the contents previously in the layer, but the contents of everything below it, as if that layer and all layers below have been merged down into that one layer. The lower layers are still present, but any modifications made to them are not visible as they are blocked by lower layers. This does not seem to be true for all layers -  only those that previously contained elements with an alpha value anywhere between 0 and 255 - i.e., the mask layers. This makes it impossible to achieve my goal, as I am attempting to animate the objects beneath the masks.
I'm not sure entirely why this is happening - it seems to be flash converting my layers in a very unintuitive manner. If anybody can help me figure out how to get around this, I would be very grateful. Possibly I could import each layer one at a time and re-arrange them in flash, but this would be very time consuming, especially considering that I may want to add animation to multiple similar files in the future. As such, if there is a way to get the layers to import correctly as arranged in the .psd, then this would be extremely useful.
    Thanks!
[moved from AS3 forum - not AS related]

What are you using to generate the PSD?
Flash's mask support is a bit tricky. In most versions of flash it works as an on/off switch. If a layer is marked as a mask layer, if there is ANY data (transparent or not, white or black or any color), it considers that you want to show that portion of the layers it masks. If there is no bitmap data of any kind in the area, it will NOT show that.
Pictures are much easier to explain. This behavior would be much different in Photoshop.
In Flash, say you start with a giant ugly stock rainbow square as the graphic you wish to mask:
Note in the timeline above I have a layer above named 'mask' and it's set to actually be a mask layer. In that layer I have this radial black/white gradient:
If I pasted that into the alpha channel of a layer in Photoshop it would gradient the pictures transparency based on the black/gray/white. In flash, it doesn't care about that. All it cares about is there "is" or "is not" data. Since there's data in a larger region than the image it is masking, it will show the whole rainbow square below it, unlike Photoshop:
    There's the output, mask applied.
Now if I actually cut a square of "bitmap data" out of the middle of the mask, Flash will dutifully clip that area so you can't see it. No data = can't see. So my new mask:
Now due to there being "missing data" in that rectangular area it will cut out that portion of the rainbow box:
Does this clarify a bit about the simplicity of masks?
To get masks to work a bit more like Photoshop there's a bit of a code workaround we've all used for quite a long time. You can read it in many links of you search for AS3 gradient mask. Take a look at the code samples to see how.

  • Layers' actions disappear when pages are replaced in PDF?

When I replace pages in an existing PDF with updated ones, my actions for layers seem to not keep the actions they had set to them. I check the properties, and they seem to be there, but the action does not work.
I am replacing the exact amount of pages and the exact amount of layers.
Any ideas? Am I missing something when I replace the pages?

I think you will have to reestablish the actions. Layers are not like annotations that are left in place when the underlying page gets replaced. Layers (OCGs) are page contents, so when they're replaced with something new, the connection is broken.
Consider what would happen if you replace a page that had OCGs with one that doesn't. Since the OCGs are no longer present, any actions that control them would naturally not work. So even when replacing a page with one that contains the same OCSs, they are still not considered to be identical at a lower level and the actions can no longer work.

  • All layers turning off when selecting layers.

I'm sure this is discussed elsewhere, but I can't find anything…
I keep having this thing happen where when I go to turn on a layer (layers pallet, the little eyeball icon), all the other layers turn off. Then I have to go back and turn on just the ones I meant to be on. Causes me problems in large multi layer documents… risks embarrassing errors.
I'm sure this is a feature, but I can't figure out what causes it to happen, and how to stop it from happening. Or for that matter going back to the previous state. Feels to me like a "mis-click" or stutter from using a Wacom.
    Any ideas?

Like R_Kelly said, it is the normal behavior if you hold the option key.
If the option key is not stuck, it reminds me of an old bug, that has been cured by an update.
Check that you are running Ps 12.0.4 or 12.1, or run the updater: http://adobe.ly/PS-Up-To-Date

  • CS3 Layers disappear when importing map into InDesign

I have an Illustraor .ai file of a map with many layers and when I import it into my InDesign document
some of the layers disappear. When I open the map in Illustrator they are all turned on but in InDesign some seem as they are turned off or transparent. Very frustrating...any help is appreciated!

Thanks so much for your responses. Although I don't complete understand what the issue was becasue I am no Illustrator expert I did find a solution. I found that there were multiple layers within a layer and also many of those layers had paths/compound paths. So I pulled the layers within out and made new separate layers for them all and removed unnecessary compound paths. So now I have many layers instead of a couple layers with multiple layers within. Confusing I know...but it worked!
    Thanks again for your input.

  • Layers disappear when saving in CS6

My layers disappear when I try to save in Photoshop CS6. They disappear when I get to the last step before saving(where you can select the quality and stuff). The effects stay, but they become kind of crappy. I've no idea how this happened either. I was just working on some pictures one by one, and then suddenly, it started happening. I did nothing differently.
Reinstalling didn't help either. What the hell is going on?

You're seeing normal behaviour/results. Most image file formats do not support layers and there can be subtle to huge differences in the display of a layered doc versus its flattened composite because Photoshop uses imprecise shortcuts to generate the composited display of a layered doc. The display discrepancies can be minimised by viewing at 100% zoom.
While working on a document, check adjustment layers, effects and layer blending with zoom at 100% so there are no nasty surprises lurking in the doc. (Of course, I realise that there's a very good chance that you may be viewing only a small region of an image when zoom is 100%.)
Regarding the JPEG save in particular: when you are at the stage of picking quality/compression, there is an option of previewing the result of the compression. JPEG doesn't support layers, hence the flattened composite at that stage. Your open doc will still be layered after you commit the save.

  • How can I use the pen or other tools when the layers are invisible/hide?

    Can you please help me?
When I click the "eye" to hide the layer it won't let me use any tools, it was working fine but suddenly stopped and I have no idea what is happening!
I can't finish my work because I need to copy things from a template layer but when I hide the top layer (to see what is down and copy with the pen) it won't work, even with a new layer! o.o
It works fine when the layers are showing but when I hide it everything stops working.
I tried to close illustrator, copy the work and paste in another place but nothing fixes it! Gosh this is so frustrating, I need help please! >__<

That's because I wanna hide the layers to see the image that I'm trying to copy on a new layer that is not hidden. It only works with all the layers showing and I can't copy like this But I figured a way to change oppacity and now I can copy the image! ^^
    Thanks for the help <3

  • I am having a rendering issue where some of my layers will disappear for one single frame.

Whenever I render my comp, some of my layers disappear for a frame or two then they come back. When the frames are gone they give a black flicker effect. This seems like a render issue because in my RAM preview it works perfectly fin. Any thoughts?

Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details like version of AE, a timeline screenshot, render settings and so on. I doubt that there is a technical issue, you simply mess up your framerates and have keyframes set in such a way that when a different framerate is used, the temporal sampling is hitting blank spaces.

  • Invisible Layers Showing Up When Publishing

I'm using Captivate 5 and the layers that I have made invisible are showing up when I publish the file. Does anyone know how to correct this? I make the layers invisible by clicking the eye icon on the layer. The red X shows up, but the layer is still visible when the file is published. The layer is not visible when I preview the slide, however. I don't see any options or preferences to adjust this.

Hello and welcome on the forum,
This is a common misunderstanding: setting a layer to invisible on the Timeline is only meant for editing reasons, not to hide the object. One example: if several objects are in the same place and you want to edit the one that is down in the stack order, hide those above. It has however no result when publishing. So your 'issue' is expected behavior. If you want to hide objects, you have to set them to invisible in the Properties panel, uncheck the option 'Visible' in the upper part.
I explained the functionalities of the Timeline in a dedicated blog post, if you like to have a look, here is the link:

  • Losing layers and groups when opening CC in CS6

If CC is a TRIAL program, why would you allow it to blow away layers and groupings when the doc is reopened in CS6? No I have to resinstall CC, open the doc, save it back down to CS6, and PRAY that the layers and groupings are intact. What a waste of my time.

    bonnober,
You should always save to the lower version from the higher version.
Whatever is new or different is simply absent from the lower version, so it will be missing or (mis)represented in whichever way is possible.
Fundamentally, the trial version is identical to the paid version.

  • Photoshop crashes when rearranging layers in layer window.

Photoshop crashes when rearranging layers in layer window.  I'm using Photoshop CS4 Extended on a MacBook Pro purchased 5 months ago. I have tried restarting the computer.  I am able to rearrange layers with the hot keys.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.
Does turning off OpenGL in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
