*** Upper or lower fields?

I'm working with HDV footage which I know is meant to be set at upper fields, while DV is lower fields. I'm trying to output my HDV footage to DVD by dropping it into a 16:9 DV sequence and rendering it. My question is, because I'm now going to DV, should I change the field order to lower or leave it as upper?
On a side note, I've already sent my HDV footage to DVD another way and have had pretty good results. I went from my HDV sequence > Compressor > 90 min best setting 16:9. The footage looks really good but by eyes seem to be telling me that there is a slight bluriness. Doesn't look bad at all, just quite different. In trying to get the best DVD possible, I'm going to try the DV sequence > render > compressor > DVD method....
Back to the original question. Does anyone know what I should do about the field order?

Anyone?

  • Upper or Lower Field First

OK, I posted a question earlier today about using a MPEG 2 file that was recorded with my NewTek Tricaster.  I had to run back into my office to do some stuff before my job tomorrow so I thought I would just take a quick look at it.  Long story short this MPEG 2 file looks fine in Premiere but looks like trash when exported to DVD.  It was suggested to me in my previous post by someone else that uses a Tricaster to export a AVI file from Premiere and then use another program to create the DVD MPEG 2 file.  I just looked at the sequence setting for this MPEG 2 file.  I had to use the Desktop selection to create a timeline that did not give me a red or yellow line over my footage.  The sequence setting are 29.97 fps, 720x480, PAR D1/DV NTSC (0.9091), Upper Field FIrst (In Premiere if I go to "Interpret Footage" it shows the clip as UFF).  So when I export my AVI file and/or MPEG 2 DVD file both of those should be UFF too correct?  I am guessing that is why my previous DVD's were looking so bad, because when I was exporting them from AME I was probably leaving the default of LFF.
Thanks for any and all help.
    Phil

I did burn a DVD last night that was UFF and it looked much better, but still not great.  I am going to try exporting an AVI file from Premiere, and then importing that back into Premiere just to export the MPEG 2 DVD file from, and also take the AVI into TMPGE to export the MPEG 2 DVD file from and see what kind of results I get.

  • Upper & Lower Fields visable on playback on TV

I've checked my seq. settings to make sure my captured footage match my seq. I even reviewed the info on each .mov file. The problem is when I playback my footage I can see the upper and lower field when ever someone moves. The fields are not just small little rough edges but long narrow lines. I tried running the footage down to DVD and playing it on my DVD Player, same thing. The footage was shot by someone else and has timecode brakes and freezes on some clips so I'm thinking that the head were dirty?
    Thank you,
    Brian

I don't know if it will make it better, but maybe you can try the Video Filters > Video > Flicker Filter. I've had a problem that looks a lot like yours and this filter solved it a lot (but not completely).

  • Progressive Field Dominance vs Lower Field Dominance

I am putting a project together in FCP 5.1.4 Most assets are NTSC QT clips with lower field dominance. I have some PAL assets with Progressive field dominance. I am using a slow-PAL conversion method outlined here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/49306/2006/02/marchcreat.html
I just want to make sure my workflow is appropriate.
If I use Cinema Tools to convert frame rate to 23.98 and then Compressor to change aspect ratio, and finally FCP to add frames back in to arrive at 29.97 NTSC . . .
DO I NEED TO change the progressive field dominance to lower field dominance at ay point?
I will ultimately be outputting to DVD which may be viewed on either computer or video monitor.

From my rudimentary knowledge I believe that as opposed to upper or lower field dominance, the source asset was recorded as "progressive scan", which I assume means NO field dominance.
What I do not understand is, if I import assets into a FCP sequence that has a lower field dominance, then what happens to these assets in the timeline when I export them out of FCP to either mpeg2 for inclusion in a DVDStudioPro. Or as a compressed quicktime for a streaming video on the web.
I am concerned that progressive scan assets mixed with lower field dominance may cause weird interlacing artifacts when I ultimately playback the end project.
Don't know whether I'm overthinking this, but want to avoid hours of work in the wrong direction.
    Help?

  • Field Order -Progressive, Upper or Lower? (Interlacing?)

    Hi there,
I am fairly new to exporting videos in premiere pro and wanted to ask any experienced knowledgable users what the
field order in the export box does if changing between progressive, upper or lower? I have read up on interlacing and de-interlacing as i noticed that my clip when played on the computer shows these horizontal interlacing lines when exported on the default 'upper' field order option and as a test I exported with 'progressive' and the lines had disappeared but I'm wondering if exporting it in progressive reduces the quality of the video in any way?
This video is to be played on an HD TV most likely for a meeting.
Reading up that some TVs will automatically de-interlace a clip, does this mean that
    a) I should just leave it interlaced under 'upper' option and know that the horizontal lines won't appear on the TV? (still need to test this)
    or
    b) Just export as progressive as I am entirely wrong about the TV and the horizontal lines will show up on HD TVs unless I export with progressive?
    I am pretty confused!
Please, I would appreciate any advice on this?
Sorry if i'm wrong on the things i've said, I am very new to all of this!
    Thank you!

    Hi Jess565,
    Thanks for using Adobe forums,
You can go ahead and export as Progressive and it will not effect the quality of your video.

  • For Encore SD DVD 29.97i, What Field should video be in, upper or lower?

Been awhile since a compressed to DVD in Encore.  I believe the field order of my Mpeg 2 from premiere should be lower field.  Can anyone confirm this? Just wanted to double check.

As always, the field order of your exported file should match the field
order of your source footage.  Encore can handle either upper first or
    lower first.

My SD video keeps jumping between the upper and lower frames.  So the video starts frame blending and blurring in and out.  The sequence settings are set to

  • Is Central Search Searchable Via Upper and Lower Case Letters

    Good evening,
Does anyone know if Central Search is searchable using both upper and lower case letters?  We have the functionality enabled and can only bring back search results when we use upper case letters.  When we search on the same marketing object using lower case letters, we do not get any results. For example, TK2292 brings back marketing object TK0002292 but tk2292 does not bring back any results.  Advanced Search appears to be able to handle both search scenarios.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Gregg

    Hello,
Did you put a breakpoint in the query method to check what you receive in the field 'marketing object' when you start from the central search of the advanced search?
    Is it different?

  • HD Upper or lower interlace or not that is the question

Ok Im a bit confused and cannot seem to get a straight direction on this. I shoot in 30fps 1080i, I capture in HD via firewire, I edit and when outputting for regular DVDs do I encode UPPER FIELD first since the source media is HD or LOWER FIELD first because it is doing to DV.
When encoding with Media Encoder should I check the deinterlace button when encoding HD for a DV project going to encore or not check it...that is the question.
Where is my Commedore 64 when I need it?

Choose the correct field order for your
export format when exporting, in this case DV.
Choose progressive/interlaced depending on your export format when exporting. Since DV is interlaced, do not de-interlace.
    Who needs a Commodore 64 when you have a Vic 20! ;)
    Cheers

  • Upper or lower?

I have shot some PAL 1080p25, completed my project and wish to encode Bluray.
I understand that PAL 1080 progressive is not supported by the Bluray spec (it does not appear in the list of presets), so I selected HD 1080i25.
I see that the Basic Video Settings show the Field Order as Upper First.
I always thought that PAL required lower first.
Would a guru please confirm that1080 progressive is not available for PAL BluRay,
and whether I should change the field order to upper or leave it at lower - as the preset has it?   Thanks

    PAL SD is lower field.
PAL DV is LFF,  So is NTSC DV.  But DVDs, which are also Standard Definition, can be either Upper or Lower, whether PAL or NTSC.  I think saying "PAL SD" on this is too broad a stroke.

  • Black lower field in .avi when converting to any format

    Dear Masters out there:
Trying to convert old .avi-clips that plays taller than wider in Windows Player (Parallels)for some reason, but when trying to convert (tried them all: Prism, MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake, FlipMac, etc...) to Mp4 (or rather: to an FCE-compatible sequence) the video plays upper field but is black lower field? I´m sure this is just me not thinking straight, but it has been a few days now... Please explain the solution to me like I was a six year old. I´m really eight!

  • 23.98 fps advanced pulldown removel with lower field dominance??

When ever I have captured 24p advanced material shot on a DVX100B, I have always used Final Cut Pro 5's advanced pulldown removel easy set up (2:3:3:2). I haven't run into any issues until now. When I try to capture 24p advanced material, for some reason Final Cut sets my field dominance as lower (even). I made sure I was using the capture pre-set for advanced pulldown removel (23.98) and I was. Is there any way to fix this? I tried trashing my preferences but that didn't help. This is progressive scan material so in the past Final Cut Pro has always set it to field dominance as "none". Also, because my 24pa material is having a lower field dominance and as 29.97fps, I have to render in my 24pa sequence which I have never had to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
PS: I'm using OSX 10.4.8 (the OS choice drop down menu hasn't been updated)
Update: I tried capturing a short clip (about 30 seconds) and it worked fine, but when I try capturing my clip, which is about 10 mins, I get it capured at 29.97 with lower field dominance.

  • UPPER and lower case file extensions for Photo Shop Elements using Windows 7

How do I persuade WIndows 7 to show both UPPER and lower case file extensions, which is a very useful facility offered by my ancient, 2002, version of Photoshop Elements? When processing large volumes (100 plus) photos it is very useful to be able to spot those that have been processed among those awaiting my gentle touch. The JPEG file extension produced by my camera is UPPER case so by using "Save as" with lower case the modified photos are immediately spotted. This worked fine on Windows XP and the same programme has loaded and works well on my new laptop which came loaded with Windows 7 EXCEPT that it persists in using UPPER case all the time, irrespective of the preference settings in PSE. HELP!
    Camperman1

In PSE there is a facility "File > process multiple files".
Using this facility you can actually process multiple files at one go and you can easily rename images.

  • Forcing Index use with UPPER or LOWER in the WHERE clause.

Does anyone know how to force Oracle to use an index/Key when using UPPER or LOWER in the WHERE clause?

You have to create a function index. Check your documentation on it.

  • Datatable for upper and lower limit maintained in Measuring Point.

    Hi,
I am making use of user exit : IMCR0001. User exit generates maintenance order for measuring reading which are beyong the range maintained in measruing point.
I have create measuring point with characteristics as TEMPERATURE. I have maintained upper limit : 1500 C & lower limit : 1200 C.
When I check datatable IMPTT and look for upper and lower limit, it is showing me : Upper range :1.7731500000000001E03 Lower range : 1.4731500000000001E03
Why is that I can not find the actual value as 1500 and 1200 n the datatable?
In which datatable I can find these values?
    Kindly help.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    TOM.

    Hi Tom,
These are system Generated Values, but they will be concatenated by a few Zeros, but you can always find the exact value,
I am able to see the Values correctly in my system follower by some 10-12 zero's "E"+ 02 or 03.
    but can check the values
can cross check the Characteristics for the same measuring point?
