Upres before import into Color?

Hi, I have a client who shot a project on NTSC-DV using a PD-150 camera. He wants to color grade and is concerned about also wanting to "upres" the footage at some point.
As far as software based upconversion goes, which is the better route to take. To upres the footage using Compressor before starting with Color? Or to bring the NTSV-DV footage into color, set the room to something like ProRes422 or 10-bit and the just export from Color that way?
I'm confused if bringing DV footage into Color and then exporting it as a higher-rez format counts the same as doing an upres using Compressor?

Thanks for the tips on 24p. I don't know the complete story on the pulldown for this footage, so if the only gain is fewer frames (and I guess faster encoding), then it's not really an issue.
Sorry to keep dragging this on, but now I've got a quick question about the Kona upconversion. I'm working on a machine that has a Kona 3 card, but I don't have the desire to recapture all the tapes again. Can I use the Kona card to uprez the cut of the footage on my machine? Meaning, just working with the Quicktime files.
I've read up on the Kona issue and it seems everything I'm seeing is exclusive to just recapturing the tapes. Like I said, I'm not a huge believer that DV footage will morph into HD looking footage, so I haven't really investigated this too thoroughly.
If I'm just going to make an SD DVD, is there a noticeable change in quality in taking the DV uprez route?

  • Do I need to compress video before importing into DVD SP?

    Hello,
this is probably stupid question, but I would like to know, if I need to compress my video before I import it into DVD SP as an asset. It looks like everyone use Compressor before importing into DVD SP, (setting up number of passes, bit rates and so on), and then they do it again when setting up preferences in DVD SP. (setting 1 pass or 2passes, bit rate values)
So is not the video actually compressed twice? Once in Compressor and once in DVD SP?
And also, what video formats are actually OK to import into DVD SP? (QT, AVI, FCP movie, etc)
Does DVD SP take them all, or does it only have to be QT?
Thank you and I appologize for these novice questions.

m2v will not be recompressed when placed on tracks (though in some instances it may recompress on menus.) Ultimately it is better to compress outside of DVD SP for control of encodes (and making AC3 files) and also some formats may not be supported by importing into DVD SP directly.

  • Importing into COLOR

    I am using FCP 7
I am unable to import FCP sequence/ EDL / XML into COLOR.
Where am I going wrong ?

yes - I have the same problem.
    I tried collapsing the multi-clip -- that didn't work.
I collapsed the multi-clips in the timeline, copied the entire sequence and pasted it into a new sequence in a new project and dumped the multi-clips.
    Still no luck.
All but one of my clips from the multiclips in the timeline are ignored. This seems to be - like most other of apple's FCS2 problems - a problem of their use of XML.
The really frustrating thing is that I'm sure that the apple development team is fully focused on 10.5 and the iphone - fixing all of the FCS2 problems just doesn't come across as a priority.
The promise of FCS2 is an awesome idea. The delivery ,however, feels like I bought a pet rock.
Color, compressor, and soundtrack are all wonky at this point and very disappointing.

  • How do you prepare still images before importing into FCP?

I'm working on a WWI documentary, so there are a lot of photos that need to be imported. Also each image needs to have movement set to them. The images are in a few different formats: JPEG, GIF, TIFF and PDF's. Their file sizes range from 28 KB - 102 MB. I thought of importing them into Photoshop, where I can resize and save as a PNG file. Then I thought I could open the images in Motion, put movement on the images and export each image as a quicktime file using compressor. My settings in FCP are as follows: AJA Kona LH: 525 29.97 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). Frame size is 720x486. Does anyone know which is the best way to prepare images before importing them into FCP? Does anyone have a different workflow that works better?

Just make sure that they are bigger than 720x486 if you intend to be doing moves on them. an 28KB? As MASTER pics? Way too small...those will look like crud. But if you can make the images larger, about twice as large as your canvas, then you are fine.

  • Clean Application before Importing into Subversion?

    Hi
We are currently looking at implementing Subversion to control our source code.
I've noticed when importing our ADF Faces project into the repository that a number of generated files are also included.
The main ones being the classes directories and the temp directory under public_html/WEB-INF
Is it safe to delete these files from the source directory before performing an import?
It seems that performing a complete rebuild on the application gets them back.
Further commits do not include these files?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
I use the subversion command-line utilities for all of my SVN activities. Having said that, you could do the import using the plugin and then use the command line to set the svn:ignore property as required.
I cannot speak to the subversion plugin capability from personal experience. I do have it installed, but I just use it so that I get the nice little state overlay icons on the files when I am in jdev.

  • How do you set the duration of images before importing into a timeline

Is there a way to do a batch import of images where once I place them into a video group I can set the duration of each image automatically by detereming the overall timelime lenght as opposed to manually setting the duration of each image?

I"m not sure you can do this with a video timeline.  If you create a frame animation sequence, you can select all the frames and set the duration, then convert it to a video timeline.  Not the best answer, but I think it will work.

  • Problem with Importing into Lightroom

I have Lightroom 5.3 64 bit installed on a Windows 7 SP1 machine. I have two pairs of mirrored HDDs for image file storage.
I: and J: are both mirrored pairs of HDDs (four discs). When I first imported the "Panorama images" image files on the (I:) drive into Lightroom, the file called "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" was corrupted on the drive; the "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" files were not accessible from Lightroom or Photoshop or Windows. (The screen shot above is comparable to a before-and-after screen shot; the (J:) is like the before and the (I:) is like the after screen shot. The "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" file is there before importing into LR, but it is missing after "Panorama images" is imported into LR.)
Below is what Windows and Lightroom showed after the Import of "Panorama images" into LR.
I replaced the "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" file, from backup media. I tried Importing the files a second time, and the same thing happened again. At that point I gave up on importing any part of the "Pano" image files into LR.
Next: I also have image capture files, camera card downloads, archived on the same mirrored arrays, in the "My Pictures" file. When I tried to Import the latest file of camera images into Lightroom from "My Pictures", LR again erased or corrupted the "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" files, on both arrays, and again "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" disappeared, and again I had to replace it from backup media.
This is very irritating. Very very irritating. At this point it makes Lightroom more harmful that useless.

The reason for the different drive designation is the assignment when the drives have been remounted.. The first time this occurred, the machine had one two-drive-array, "Photo Storage RAID (F:)". When I imported into LR the "Panorama images" file, the  "8 bit Panos Adobe RGB"  file path was lost. The files could not be found in PS or LR.  Windows Explorer could not find the files, and showed the odd "8BITAD-1". All of the other files in the "Panorama images" file were imported into the LR catalog.
I then replaced both discs in the RAID array with new HDDs, and rewrote the files on to them, and remounted the array (new letter assignment for the drive). I then, a few months later, tried to again Import the Panorama images file into LR. And the exact same thing happened.
I removed and rewrote both arrays, the new disc pair and the old disc pair, and remounted them, now they are drives (I:) and (J:). (One pair is  mounted to the board disc controller, and the other pair is mounted on a PCI SATA controler card,
I then imported "My pictures" (not the "Panorama Images" file) from the (I:) drive into LR, and the "8 bit Adobe RGB panos" again disappeared from the (I:) drive, That is the top screen capture. I then tried to Import the "My Pictures" file from the (J:) drive, and the "8 bits Adobe RGB panos" file disappeared from the (J:) drive; the (J:) file path looked the same as the (I:) file paths in the top screen capture.
LR imported about one half of the "My Pictures" files from the drives; all files between 2016 and 2012 were not imported into the LR catalog (The "My pictures" content files are named by dates, year_month_day).
LR is installed on a 250 gig SSD, and the catalog is also located there. (I have used PS with mirrored arrays since Windows 2000 and BX-133 MBs and PS5,)
(when the 8 bit panos go missing, they are missing from windows too)

    Anybody noticing the same issue?

    hi djiti,
    DXO up to date,
    Lion up to date,
iPhoto up to date (? I want to hear you say yes),
    I am at a loss.
Some apps do not read the same info in the same place in the exif: iPhoto reads the "Creation Date" from "modification date" created in another app, for example; I use "A Better Attributes" app, to change the Exif in that case. But I have never seen that the Exif is "corrupted" by a photo app.

  • Should I convert my Rebel XT RAW files to DNG before importing?

First, I'm glad the Automator script for renaming files is working now in Leopard. I always would import from my CF card to a directory and run an automator script to change the filenames to something somewhat useful. That broke in Leopard but it now works. But anyway, I was wondering if its worth the extra step to convert my RAW files to the Adobe Digital Negative format before importing into Aperture? Does any metadata get lost in the conversion?

I'm not aware of any metadata being lost.
According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307385, by converting to DNG, you lose
The Auto Noise Compensation adjustment under Raw Fine Tuning is not available with DNG images. Auto Noise Compensation requires specific knowledge of the camera's sensor characteristics in combination with the ISO value of the image. DNG images do not provide the needed sensor information.
but you gain lossless compression of the files by converting to DNG. A recent test converted 500MB of Xti images to about 400MB. I would rather convert to DNG in order to keep all my files in one format so in 10 years so I don't have 8 different Canon camera raw formats I have to worry about - whether or not Aperture is around.
Aperture still uses the 2.0 raw converter and not the DNG converted. I haven't yet made a decision as to if losing the auto noise compensation is that big of a deal.

I've tried reinstalling the program and changing the document from CMYK to RGB. Not sure what else to try.

Wondering if anyone knows if Apple have addressed the issue of having to break long timelines into sections of 20 minutes or so before sending to Color.
    Thanks

IME, it's not the length of the sequence but the number of cuts in the sequence.
If after importing my sequence into Color I look under the Shots tab and it shows more than 800 shots - I'll start breaking up the show.

Vignetting added and color adjusted immediately post import into lightroom5.
My photos from my most recent trip, when imported into Lightroom, have a heavy vignette very close to all 4 corners of the photo, and seem to have some small adjustments being done to them immediately when I import. The thumbnail looks great, and when i import --> then select it to open it as if I was going to view it full size in Lightroom, it looks great [no vignetting or tone/color adjustment] for about 1-2 seconds while a 'loading' footer is shown, following which the color is slightly altered and the vignetting is added (at this point then the thumbnail changes as well). This is a significant and noticable change to the photo. The pictures also do not have these issues if I view them through any other software. • Kuler colors imported into AI way off

I created a color group on kuler. Saved and downloaded the .ase file. Imported into AI and the cmyk values are not remotely accurate. What gives? For now I write down the values and create my color groups from scratch. A waste of time but what can you do.

This happens because at this time, Kuler can't create CMYK swatches -- it can only create RGB colors. True, in Kuler itself, you can view CMYK colors, but when you save a Theme from kuler as an .ASE file, the swatches are converted to RGB. Then, when you open the swatch file in Illustrator, they are converted back to CMYK. So your colors are going through a conversion.
Until Kuler starts supporting the export of CMYK values, this will continue to be a problem. So web designers are cool with it. Print designers, not so much. sigh.

  • PDF color changing when imported into InDesign 6

I am importing a customers pdf into InDesign 6. When I do the import the color is changing from the original PDF colors. The original color in the pdf is 0/95/100/29 and when imported to InDesign 6 it becomes 21/98/100/12. Is there a setting I need in InDesign 6 to keep the original PDF colors intact?

Are you using the eye dropper tool to get those numbers?  It could be the way the original PDF was created.  I have a feeling that the original settings ere set to "adapt" to color workflows or something similar.  See if you can open the PDF in Acrobat and set the file to "Leave Color Unchanged" if you can...somewhere in the file's profile or color setting.  It could also be the preview in InDesign.  If somehow there is a way to find out which color settings were applied to the PDF; you could then match those in InDesign's Color Settings.  If it is the preview reading, then the file should proof well.  If InDesign has corrupted the PDF's original color, then the file will proof bad.  I think it prudent to investigate the PDF's original Color Settings vs. InDesign's.  Try posting this question in the InDesign forum and see what you get back.  I'd be curious to know what they have to say over there.
