UPS and 2 power supplies

Out of curiosity, what happens if only one of the two power supplies is kept on UPS and the power goes out?

What do you think will happen?
The power supply connected directly to the main power will go offline.
The power supply connected to the UPS will stay up (as will your RAID).
Your UPS will start to drain.
Ultimately, if the power stays off long enough, the UPS will be unable to sustain sufficient voltage and the second power supply will go offline, bringing down your RAID.
Is that what you mean?
Note that the XServe RAID can have a fairly significant power draw. You need to make sure your UPS is sized sufficiently for your expected runtime.

  • Running on UPS Low Power Alert

I have a Best Buy Geek Squad UPS plugged into my mac. When ever there is a momentary dip in the power, the mac will display an alert that the mac is running on the UPS and power is getting low.
There is plenty of time left on the UPS and the alert will not go away without clicking on the OK button. It seems that Apple has not implemented this interface very well so I'd suspect Snow Leopard more than the UPS.
Is there any way to disable these alerts short of disconnecting the UPS from the Mac?

Yes that's how Snow Leopard works, unfortunately.
It's my understanding that the UPS does send OSX a message when utility power is restored, but OSX doesn't seem to do anything with it.

  • Rack design for two ONS 15454's and two 15540-PWR-AC power supplies...

Looking for advice setting up two ONS boxes with two 15540-PWR-AC power supplies. The manuals/CCO show rack design for just the ONS boxes and a fuse/alarm panel. I have two side by side racks for the gear. Has anyone set up the power supplies for an ONS installation? Any feedback would be great.

Review the AC/DC Power Solution Data Sheet:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6063/products_data_sheet0900aecd801a002a.html
    Per the Data Sheet...
The Medium will power 1x 15454
The Large will power 2x 15454
    A few things to note...
    1. The Power Solution can possibly power more 454s based on the actual power draw of the nodes.
    2. There are only 4 circuit breakers on the Large expansion panel. A & B power for 2 454s.
    3. It is recommended 454s have 30A fuses/breakers per power source. This can change based on the actual hardware config.
    4. You could possibly use the 15A GMT fuses.
    5. You could possibly incorporate an external PDU for additional fuses.

  • Will PFC power supplies work with SIMULATED sine wave inputs

Will PFC power supplies work with a SIMULATED sine wave input from a UPS unit?

Not sure whether you really meant "PPC" and have never heard of a PFC power supply, but if your question is whether a Mac PPC computer will run on a UPS, then the answer is definitely "yes" as my machine has shown twice in the past 12 months and several times in the past on the G5 tower and with a G3 B&W.
I haven't dragged the old analog scope off the shelf to see what the UPS output really looks like, but I suspect it is no dirtier than the mains power in my neighborhood.

  • 20" ALS Power Supplies Faulty?

In September we received 40 20" ALS iMacs. 4 of those have had power supplies fail. That's a 10% failure rate in less than 3 months of use. All of them have the symptom of LED #2 momentarily lighting up after power on.
Has anyone else noticed a trend with those models? I have a tech assist follow up # with Apple, and if I get another failure they want me to call them to try to capture what is happening.
    20" ALS G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I have that same model since about July. It has been on about 90% of the time between then and now (I seldom will ever turn it off) and haven't had any issues with the power supply. I do have it running off a UPS that filters the power though to make sure it is getting a clean supply.

  • Lock ups and Freezing solved on my Audig

After days of trying different stuff to resolve this problem where screen locks up and looping squealing plagued my computer, I think I have finally resolved the problem. It appears that one of the programs running in my system tray was the culprit. I shut down everything in my system tray and then tried BF2 and it finally worked and has been working consistently. I do not know yet which program was causing the problem ( I'm still working on finding which one), but I have weeded out my antivirus (AVG free), my firewall?(Zonealarm),? Musicmatch Jukebox ( which I really suspected, but does not appear to be the one) and ?my Logitech wireless mouse software. Still got to reactivate Quicktime, Corecenter ( an MSI overclocking tool) Nastromo loadout manager, Instant Messenger and a couple of others. What ever the conflict in the program that is causing the problem is directly conflicting with my Audigy 2 card. I could remove the card and the problem would go away using onboard sound. But I was very disturbed that my Audigy 2 was not working. I tried removing ram, I tried using different pci slots, and lets not count the number of times that I removed and reinstalled drivers and software. Though I well give a little credit to finding the problem to this forum. There is a post advising to go to msconfig and disabling a bunch of the start up programs while doing driver removal and reinstall. After reinstalling last driver I went ahead and ran BF2 before restarting computer ( while all programs in systray were off ) and it ran flawlessly. Then I restarted computer all my normal background software loaded up. I fired up BF2 and bam there was the same old lockup and squeal. So I just went to the system tray and shut down everything and it runs smooth as butter. Hope this helps I know from reading the forums there are alot other people having the same problem.

I would be concerned that you may have a power supply going bad. Unfortunately the only way to test this theory is to replace it. If you do replace it may sure you get one that is rated at a high enough wattage to supply your system. I use a 500 watt power supply. I have had power supplies to go bad on me in the past. Sometimes the power supplies will not go entirely out, they just stop producing as much power as they normally would. This can cause some weird things to happen in your system. I've had one go bad and it was providing enough juice to let my computer cut on, but the video card wasn't getting enough?juice to operate thus I was getting a blank screen. I would also like to know if you are overclocking. Sometimes overclocking can cause heat issues that could cause a similar problem to what you are having.

  • UPS and Leopard

I have bought an Atlantis Land UPS Host Power 1501 and i have connected it to my aluminium iMac through an usb port. The sw that Atlantis Land give with the UPS isn't compatible with MACOS X.
Is Leopard capable of controlling an UPS without any sw? I found in internet some picture of an option panel for UPS in "energy saver" option but i don't have it. Have i to configure something?
    Someone can help me?
Tnx and sorry for my poor english

If it isn't showing up automatically in the Energy Saver preference pane it probably doesn't follow a standard connection scheme and isn't compatible with the Mac OS.

  • Control eight 200mA power supplies

I need to control about eight 200mA power supplies.  Each supply should be programmable from minus
30 volts to plus 30 volts.  I need to be
able to sequence the outputs (have one output go to 5V, next another output go
to 8V, etc.).  The next thing I need is
to output a serial data stream of about 10 bits.
My test case would be the following:
Sequence several of the outputs to different voltages, this
puts the ASIC I am testing into the mode I need. Then I need to have one of the
power supplies output a serial 10 bit word to load a register inside the ASIC.
Does anybody know if this could be done with a DAQ-card?

    Hi Gary,
M Series DAQ cards provide a very flexible tool.  You can have Digital Input and Output, Analog Input and Analog Output.  The question is how are you going to control the Power Supplies?  Do they take digital commands, or can you input an analog voltage as centerbolt mentioned?  If you do need an analog output to control the power supply, then the standard multifunction DAQ cards will not work for you, because they only have at the most 4 analog outputs.  There are dedicated Analog output cards that could provide this functionality.
The other idea is that you want the DAQ card to be your power supplies for you.  If that is the case then that would greatly change what you require from the card, and no single card will be able to do that for you.  Finally how does the power supply output a 10 bit serial word, is that inherent in a piece of hardware you already have, and if so how do you tell it to make that output. Please get back to me and we can probably find a solution that would work for you.
    Have a great day,

  • H330 won't switch to UPS when power fails

I have an APC XS 1000 UPS with updated PowerChute software that worked fine with my former desktop (Dell), but my Lenovo H330 will not switch to it if the AC power fails.    Windows 7 says the APC is working normally, it passes a self-test, and all of the peripheral devices that are connected to it switch over without a problem.  But the H330 just immediately shuts off.  Anyone have any ideas?  .

    hi America2468,
    Welcome to the Community.
Assuming all peripherals are connected properly to the APC XS 1000 UPS and it's not exceeding the 600 Watts load (as per this specs sheet) then most likely the problem is with the battery. As per this article, newer UPS units will power up on a dead battery (your UPS maybe included on the list).
Check if the replace battery light is ON and replace it accordingly - see this article as a reference.
    Hope this helps

  • Willl these power supplies work with Athlon64?

    Hi.
The pc i'm going to build is:
    Athlon 64 3000 (or maybe 3400  )
    MSI k8t-neo fis2r
    2 x 512mb kingston valueram
    HD hitachi 7k250 sata 160gb
    9800pro
    dvd-rom + cd-rw (or dvd-rw)
My question is: will these 2 power supplies work fine?
    1) CODEGEN-IPERTEK 450W
    +3,3V 20 A
    +5V 40A
    +12V 16A
    2) Techsolo TP - 500
    +3,3V 28 A
    +5V 38A
    +12V 17A
    Thank you!

Ok, you convinced me to buy its "bigger brother"
My last question is, which one of these 2?
    1) Enermax EG475AX-VE SFMA (470w) I think it's the one of this review: http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/cases/Enermax_EG475AX-VE_1.html
    2) Enermax EG465AX-VE FMA (460W) http://www.computex.com.tw/detail_productmain.asp?index=03061&pcode=M0200&show=oneproduct&pname=EG465AX-VE+FM+(24P)
Which one should I buy? I would prefer the first one cause it's easier to get and it also has 2 sata connectors, but my doubts are:
It's a noisetaker, is it good?
It's dual 12V rails, with + 12,0V(1) = 16A and + 12,0V(2) = 15A. Do you think it's a problem if it's dual rails? I't's better if it is single single rail like the second one?
    Thank you

  • P7-1490 upgrade Graphics Card and Power Supply

I just got a GEFORCE GTX 650TI Boost graphics card.  The 300 watt Power Supply on my P7-1490 can't handle it because I need a 6 pin power connector.  The 1490 comes with a 300 Watt Power Supply.  I need something at least 450 watts.  Which upgrade will fit my box.  In addition, can the Jasmine Motherboard handle the new graphics card.  It does fit into the PCI Express slot.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Please consider the Corsair CX500, CX500M, CX600, or CX600M power supplies for your needs. Yes, the Jasmine motherboard in your p7-1490 should be capable of handling the GTX 650 Ti. Additionally, you will need to disable "Secure Boot" and possibly enable "Legacy Support" in the BIOS before installing the GTX 650 Ti.

  • Video card and power supply upgrade

Hi, can i put in my hp pavilion p6-2315el an asus gtx 760 and a 600w power supply?

The card should should work provided there is enough space for it. I would recommend the Corsair CX500M and CX600M power supplies. These are modular version of Corsair power supplies known to fit in many HP desktop cases. The modular PSUs require less cabling and thefefore will provide for better air flow.
If the ASUS GTX 760 doesn't work, please see old_geekster's reply in GTX 750 Ti and HP Pavilion p6-2108p? Are they compatible for a possible solution.
