UPS and Surge Protection
I just purchased a Mac Pro 3 gHz Tower and I would like to properly protect my tower as well as 30" mac cinema display, external harddrive, and cable modem line. If my power did go out, I would just need several minutes to save and close the machine.
It seems like this would be a very good option: APC Back-UPS 1200VA 120V - BR1200.
Can anyone else recommend something? Is this overkill for a home computer setup?

else. While they're great at protecting your
equipment from electrical events there's no battery
backup so you're limited to size of the capacitors
for longer than a split second event.

My recommendation would be first a Smart-UPS RT
2000VA. These are not cheap although would provide
the maximum protection for your equipment. Then a
Smart-UPS 1500VA and then a Back-UPS RS 1500VA.
I will look at it immediately. I'm going to search for it within the page I entered in my previous message...
Please keep in mind that these are "recommended"
rather than "they'll do".

Pop-ups and new tabs opening when I try to browse
Hello
I'm having trouble with pop-ups and new tabs for 'Mackeeper' among others, launching themselves in Safari on my MacBook Air. This has only just started after having the laptop for 3 months.
Operating system: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Speed: 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5
Storage capacity: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I have tried troubleshooting by looking in 'Extensions' but there's nothing to remove. I've also tried Forum Member Linc Davis' advice, but unfortunately that's not working either.
I've tried all of the suggestions below, but nothing's working. It is driving me bonkers, so if anyone can help I would be most grateful.

My safari has random pop ups and opens new ad tabs
Hi there!
Ever since a few days I have some issues with random advertisements, pop-ups and my safari even opens up new tabs, when I open up another tab. It's really annoying and I read that it could be a virus that's constantly changing, so 'old' solutions might not be applicable anymore, so that is why I am opening a new discussion. Also, I read about firstly making a back-up, does this need to be done with an external hard drive?

That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. I am getting a ton of pop-ups and redirects when connected to my home internet service. My ISP claims it not them. This doesn't happen when I travel or when I use my business internet service from another provider. My wife has the same issue. Between us we have three iPads and all exhibit the same issue.

Is switching a surge protecter "off" as good as unplugging what's plugged into it?
I just moved the surge protecter into my room where my Mac mini, Proscan 19" display, iPad dock charger, and Kindle 3 charger are so I can more easily unplug items from the outlets (the power outlet is behind my dresser). When I flip the surge protecter to "off", I'm unable to turn on anything which makes me wonder; is flipping the switch on the surge protecter to "off" as good as unplugging everything connected to it?

I have adblock but still get pop ups and ads
I get pop ups and ads on both safari and google chrome and have an adblocker on both. These pop ups are ads in many different ways most common is a new tab opening usually that stupid mac keeper website.

HP Pavilion Elite e91804 experiencing lock-ups and crashing after LWSEP

Before I sent my computer in for the LWSEP I was experiencing lock-ups and crashes only when I was multi-tasking (playing video games, listening to music, and having tabs open in firefox).
So I sent my computer in for the LWSEP to receive a new motherboard to fix these crashes, however after receiving my computer from them, the lock-ups and crashing have not been fixed and, in fact, have gotten worse. My computer will now lock-up and crash whenever I attempt to stream anything, be that music, video, etc. I can still occasionally play video games, assuming that I am doing nothing else, and that my computer cooperates with me (not locking up), but this only happens about 1/3 of the time.

Out of curiosity, what happens if only one of the two power supplies is kept on UPS and the power goes out?
What do you think will happen?
The power supply connected directly to the main power will go offline.
The power supply connected to the UPS will stay up (as will your RAID).
Your UPS will start to drain.
Ultimately, if the power stays off long enough, the UPS will be unable to sustain sufficient voltage and the second power supply will go offline, bringing down your RAID.
Is that what you mean?
Note that the XServe RAID can have a fairly significant power draw. You need to make sure your UPS is sized sufficiently for your expected runtime. -
I have created a PDF and password protected it for view. However, when reading the PDF in Adobe Reader app on the iPad the commenting and annotation options are not available. Is there a way to allow commenting and annotation in the app while password protecting the document?
Is there a setting that needs to be set to allow the annotation features? I set password protection to open and then password for editing and set it to Any except page extraction, but it still did not give the annotation option

I don't get this clipboard thing! I have created two files, one for the MS with mark-ups, and one for the unmarred version, each living in their own spot in my "house." It seems to be merging the two versions and I have to go in and re-paste and then it always says "you have placed a large amount of text on clipboard do you want to be able to access this?" and it prompts me to say no but I am afraid I'll lose my day's work so I just tap cancel. I highlight the day's revision and select "copy" to paste into the unmarked doc. before I save on the marked up or working doc. It is when I try to close that one that the clipboard issue pops up. What can you tell be about saving doc. in two places and how to NOT get it on clipboard? Thanks! I am not super computer savvy so layperson's language much appreciated!
Are you using Microsoft word? Microsoft thinks the users are idiots. They put up a lot of pointless messages that annoy & worry users. I have seen this message from Microsoft word. It's annoying.

When you copy information via edit > copy, command + c, edit > cut, or command +x, you place the information on the clipboard. When you paste information, edit > paste or command + v, you copy information from the clipboard to your data file.
If you edit > cut or command + x and you do not paste the information and you quite Word, you could be loosing information. Microsoft is very worried about this. When you quite Word, Microsoft checks if there is information on the clipboard & if so, Microsoft puts out this message.
You should be saving your work more than once a day. I'd save every 5 minutes. command + s does a save.

What I suggest is that you try to pair your apple ID with you company ipad and see if it works.

I believe that the Apple rules let you. They are something like:
-- for a shared iDevice, you may put the app on one device
-- for a device you use exclisively, you may put the app on five (or some number) of iDevices
I'm not lawyer, so how you interpred this is a question.
Now, you need to figure out how to do this.

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
