APC does provide a list of UPS's in their website, I would recommend looking it over at:
    http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=29
Perhaps  you will be able to locate one that closely fits your needs. I believe only plugging in your iMac is a short sited solution, my recommendation would be to protect certain critical peripherals such as backup hard drives. They can be as important as teh computer. Devices I would omit are items such as  printers, cameras, modems etc...

  • APC UPS for iMac

I posted this in another thread, but since I have a new Q I am posting it again so it is tracked properly...I have 3 brand new iMac (24 inches, 3 GHz) and 1 MBA in my small business. Living in Seattle's suburbs, we have several 2-3 seconds power outages several times every winter. The issue is not if the UPS is 25% or 100% of the price of my iMac as the time we spent working on something is worth much more as we charge $200/hr to our customers with our consulting service. Last night I lost one file that got corrupted. It will take me 3-4 hrs to do it again... so I am buying my UPS right now! Before I make the final choice, can somebody confirm me if the power management feature will work with the BE750G? Pricing is not much of an issue. anything in the $90-$250 will do it for us as we lost more than that last night. I found the BE750G for $86 at Amazon and the SUA750 for $270. I really need the power management functionality as we leave the Macs powered on all the time and we are not always there to start a manual shut down.

I hate to say this but APC phone support is extremely poor (or t least the reps I got to talk to). First the sales rep told me the 750G was a discontinued model... when I told him I was looking at that on THEIR web site he acted surprised... so he moved me up the chain to second tier TECH support. Second tier support said that for iMacs the recommend smart UPS because those are better, but could not articulate why it was better (other than saying that they were more expensive because those units are better , He had no idea about switchover times, and I swear I am not making this up, he asked what version of Windows I was running, (I guess a valid question on Intel based Macs) etc. So after that experience I am very leery of trusting their advice and rather learn from a fellow iMac user that is indeed using either a 750G series or the most expensive Smart UPS 750 and confirm me if indeed switchover is fast enough and the USB connection will work well and start a shut down process if needed...
    Thanks for the help

  • Ups for imac g5 20in lcd

TIA for any help re: my quest for a ups. i believe the imac g5 -20 in. is 185 watts. to determine the VAC of a proposed ups, one must convert the computer watts to VAC. i understand that the wattage is 60 - 70% of peak power and that figure ( peak wattage) is the desired VAC. therefore, i would need a unit of about 300 VAC. this seems to be a very low number as most of the units i see at the store are for 800, 900 or 1000VAC.
also, i understand that the ideal situation is to have instantaneous switchover in the event of a power loss, however, those units seem to start at $400 plus.
my only desire is to shut the system down properly to avoid damage to hard drives etc. again, TIA

Hi Brenmar and welcome to the discussions!
The units that you see in the store are larger than what just your computer would need. Remember, a lot of people are still using CRTs - shudder to think! - that use a lot more power than LCDs. A UPS is also designed to power more than just your PC also. People have printers and routers and such plugged in there as well, even though you are not really supposed to plug in a printer.
If you use the APC configurator and plug in you system info, it will make several suggestions. I put in a G5 iMac with the 20" display, and inkjet printer, a cable modem and router, and my powered speakers. It suggested an 800VA unit which sounds a little high. I have a 650VA and it works fine.
I suggest APC very highly. I need to get another UPS for my other PC and will be getting an APC brand this time. It will connect by USB cable to your Mac and be detected under your energy saver preferences.

  • APC UPS for iMacs?

    Hello,
I currently have the late 2013, 21.5" iMacs. I'd like to get a UPS from APC just in case a black out occurs.
In the future I may get a 27" iMac, so something a bit 'futureproof' would be great.
Would the APC ES 750A be a good fit?
    Thanks!

The APC website has a helper page to assist you in selecting your UPS. I just checked my UPS and it shows a load of 70 watts and a run time under battery of about 73 minutes. I presently have an iMac Retina 5K and an OWC Dual Drive Enclosure with two SATA drives connected to the Thunderbolt port on my iMac.
You can use the 70 watts as an estimate of your load and then check the various UPS models to see what the projected run time under battery is for the models you are considering.
My UPS is a Back UPS Pro 1500

  • UPS for imac 3.4Ghz i7?

    Hi,
    I have a 3.4Ghz i7 imac 27"
    I'm looking for a UPS..
I've been reading various comments on Amazon about APC UPS's and the new CPUs and there power requirements.
Would also like to power my Pegasus R4 with the same UPS
Does anyone have any recommendations for a UPS?
Apolgies if this is an over worked topic! :-)
    Many Thanks,
    Steve

    Thanks for the feedback.
APC is great, I've had one before with my old G5.
Can I refine the question slightly?
The question: Do I need a smart or a non smart UPS given the power requirements of my imac 3.4Ghz i7 and is the product mentioned below man enough for the job?

  • UPS for iMac

Which UPS is compatible (and highly recommended) with the iMac please?

I do not use any of the supplied software ( not needed). They have been working flawlessly.

  • Which ups is the best for imac ?????

    I have imac 3.06GHz core 2 Duo, memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3,
I want to buy ups, that contains auto  closed, and have voltage stabilizers.
which is the best ups for my imac?
    thanks a lot

There is no best, you have to assess in addition to the Mac what else will be plugged into it and what other needs you may have. For brands I'd recommend APC, you can visit there website and they can help you choose one that comes closest to fitting your needs.

  • What size UPS for the 5K iMac?

Frequent power cuts here - only a few minutes long - need a UPS to allow me time to power down properly. What's the power requirements of the 5K iMac (looking to buy one before New Year) and need a suitable UPS for safety.

    http://images.apple.com/environment/reports/docs/imac_27inch_oct2012.pdf
Almost any UPS will be suitable. I have the APC Back-UPS 750 which comfortably provides 35 to 40 minutes of operation for my 21" iMac plus its external backup disk drive, so it should meet your requirements.
You do not need to install any software. Just connect APC's supplied USB cable to your Mac. OS X already includes all the USB communication required for a UPS.
Consider Cyberpower UPSs also. I do not have one of theirs but they appear to be worthy competitors for APC. Don't be too concerned about "pure sine wave" products for computer equipment - it's unnecessary.

    Hi Ise123
Both 110/240V at 50 to 60HZ, using a specific cord for each country would be better than using an adapter.
