UPS for ONT to keep internet alive

We have had a few power outages, and I have our entire network on battery backup, but this doesn't do me any good since the ONT in the garage cuts off the internet when the power is out. I'd rather the phoneline go out than the internet honestly.
Anyways, have any of you attached an APC UPS (or similar product) to the ONT so that in the even for a power failure it will maintain all functionality?

From what I see the ONT uses only 40W of power, so I might pickup a 700-1000VA unit for it, or maybe just replace the battery in a slightly older 1500VA unit I have from APC.
What do you guys think?

I have not used a UPS to power the ONT, we have had very few power outages for quite a few years now, but I know from threads here and at dslreports.com that others have successfully used a UPS. However, since your ONT is in the garage near your cars, I think you have another option or two:
1) Buy an inexpensive power inverter to convert the 12V DC to AC and use the battery in your car or a separate 12V batter to power the ONT. An example that should provide plenty of power:

2) If your car or truck has an built-in AC outlet you should be able to use that instead of a separate inverter. My Honda pickup does have one in the center console, if we have a power outage and I really want to use the internet I plan to try that with an extension code, should work.
3) Just buy a 12V battery (probably a deep cycle marine battery would last the longest) and use some jumper cables to connect it to the battery cables inside the battery compartment of the ONT. The downside to this option is that you also probably need a trickle charger to keep the battery charged.
I think it is a really bad idea to do anything that modifies the BBU. You don't own it, Verizon does, and if you break something they will probably want you to pay for it.

You can either bridge the TG or the TC.
For the TC.. I explained it in the previous post.. and it is posted again and again and again.
For the TG782T.. open it directly from a pc.. select configuration wizard and choose bridge.. it is as easy as that.
Then setup pppoe client for the TC with your Telstra username and passwork.

Socket - keep it alive or reconnect every time you need it?

Hello, there.
What would be the better approach for using the Sockets in AS3.
1st) open one connection and keep it alive until the site unloads?
2nd) open a connection, use it, and close it when done; then, open again when I need?
Considering a scenario where some users will make a constant use of the Socket, but others will almost not use it, what would be the better approach? Does an alive Socket connection use too much bandwidth? Does the action of connecting consumes more than keeping it alive? What is your opinion?

I think that kind information is inposible to be get because it depends of internet connection. From some users the time will be less from the other users.
Also keep alive msg may depend from protocol and my be only one Byte sendend on every 15 sek ( for example )

IPad / iPhone ios 6 needs "keep network alive" option.

I know this has been discussed in other posts, but a change occured from iOS 5 to iOS 6 where the network connection is no longer maintained after the screen goes to the lock screen. I use my iPad at my place of work and always have it upright so I can see any new emails / push notifications that come through. The screen turning on and showing the message is a nice alert to let me know I need to look at my email etc. This has been working ever since I have had my iPad 3rd generation until I updated to iOS 6. The device loses the internet connection so no more alerts come through. VERY frustrating. I have the latest version of iOS 6 and this issue hasn't been addressed and doesn't look like it will be addressed in the forthcoming 6.1 update.
I understand the need to preserve battery life, so this may not be desired functionailty for many. PLEASE give us the option to keep WiFi alive if there are no plans to put it back to the functionailty of ios5. Thanks for the ear.

Try #5.
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app
    •    Tap on Wi-Fi
    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Any idea how you can safely use ONE computer for BOTH work and internet?

I'm planning to set up a small music project studio, built around a powerbook, that I will be sharing with a friend of mine. My friend is going to use the computer for music AND heavy internet use, but I will only use it for music work (off-line).
The thing is then that I am slightly worried about viruses, worms, spyware and similar unwanted stuff 'sneaking in' when the laptop is online. Even with firewall and anti-virus I guess there is always a risk.
Any idea if there is a way of keeping things completely separate?
How about if I had a bootable external hard drive for my work, with the Mac OS system on. Then when I'm working I could boot up from that drive (and use the computer off-line).
Maybe we could even remove the internal hard drive from the powerbook (?), and use the powerbook with two external hard drives instead: One bootable drive for me and another bootable drive for my studio partner (and then only connect one hard drive at the time).
Any idea if this would work well..? (I'm not sure if i.e. a virus could sneak in anyway, through the PRAM, L2 cache or the RAM or something similar) Or does anyone have any other suggestions...? Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks!

Not too much worry with Macs, but get an Ethernet Router, skip Wireless, use strong Passwords.

Excellent idea, especially if the heavy Net user doesn't have Admin rights.

Just about foolproof! Just need 2 more drives for backup. Not sure why you'd want to remove the internal HD though.

Can I download Firefox and keep Internet Explorer as my default browser?

I am being prompted to install Firefox to use the MobileMe site with my IPAD. Before I download, I'd like to know if I can KEEP Internet Explorer as my Default Browser. I am NOT great with my computer and therefore would have difficulty fixing any technical challenges.

Yes you can keep IE as your default browser when installing Firefox, just answer NO when Firefox asks if you want to set it as the default browser.
What's that about the iPad? You can't install either IE or Firefox in the iPad, neither has a version for iOS.

If you used Sync to do that "import", disable Sync for at least one of those Profiles.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have Sync enabled for all the profiles. To my surprise, however, Sync was of no use in getting Default's extension collection into Shopping. For that I had to resort to the article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox.
I will try disabling Sync on Shopping.

Need to allow pop-ups for a site

My bank has upgraded their website. I need to answer a question in a pop-up box to be able to use the website. Firefox blocks the pop-up box even though I have told it to allow pop-ups for the website.
How do I get it to allow the pop-up box or do I have to use IE?

I tried that. I also talked to the people who developed and maintain the site. They said it is not a pop-up window - it is part of the site. Since it showed when I tried Internet Explorer they think it is a problem with Mozilla Firefox or my web connection. They asked me to try accessing it with my computer at a public place that offers free Internet.

How to keep connection alive?

I wondering if there is any way to keep connection alive during some period of inactivity.
I have the SQL Developer 1.2.1 (it is not easy to update as I have no admin privileges on work computer) under Windows XP, connecting to Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.6.0.
The inconvenience is that the connection become dropped after some inactivity time.
What I have to do is to disconnect and connect again. But if I run any query in dropped connection condition it would take long time before it come back with a message that there is no connection.
I could not find any kind of 'stay connected' option. (Like it is in some other application with time set possibility to send a some request to a server just to stay connected (for exm: PuTTY))
To do it by myself it would be done by having some continuously looping script, that would run some simple select (say, sysdate) periodically, but I do not know if it possible to do it from SQL Developer.
If it done in PL-SQL, it will be processed in Oracle, not in SQL Developer; so, it is not useful.
Does anybody have or know any suggestion or advice to keep connection stay active?

The trouble is shared connections. While the dbms_lock.sleep is sleeping, the connection will be frozen.
Having said that, the real solution is to fix how sqldeveloper handles lost connections. Session timeouts are usually there for a reason and client software needs to learn to live with it.

Minimum UPS for Xserve G4

I was wondering what the minimum rackmount UPS for a Xserve G4 Dual 1.3GHz would be. I was thinking of getting a Smart-UPS SC 450VA 120V. I only have a 4U rack.

As DaddyPaycheck indicated, it depends mainly how long the UPS should be able to power the XServe.
If you just want to use it for filtering power and have a decent time period to shut down the server, a small UPS like the one you mentioned is surely more than sufficient.
But if you intend to keep the server working during a (short) power outage, a more stronger UPS is recommended. We currently have two XServes and some network equipment on a 1200 VA unit, which appears acceptable for our environment (last year just one power outage that took less than five minutes).
Also take a look into the near future. When you already plan to get another server or other computer equipment soon, you may invest into a more powerful UPS right away.

I have followed instructions for importing favorites from Internet Explorer, but they do not show up in Bookmarks menu as shown in the support instructions.

You can usually find the imported IE Favorites in a folder ("From Internet Explorer") at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu folder (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks).<br />
If you can't find them in the "From Internet Explorer" folder then try this:
* Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
* Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File

When you upgraded, itunes should have put a copy of the itunes library database in a folder named *Previous iTunes Libraries* . If you upgraded itunes today it will show as
iTunes Library 2010-02-28.itl

Since I am not sure of your setup, look for the "Previous" folder on both your C: and F: drives.
