UPS shutting down iMac
I need some help. I have an iMac 21" (brand new). For some reason the computer goes to sleep and then shuts down completely. I am assuming it has something to do with the UPS setting in the system preferences. My question is 1. how doe I set them correctly to stop this problem? or 2. How do I turn off the UPS altogether? PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanks!
You can start by telling the forum the make/model and capacity of the UPS. And what settings you are using. Do you have a device (KillAWatt) or UPS itself to tell you what you are using? And anything else on the same circuit as the UPS can be a factor.

Firefox is frozen, will not open, and will not let me shut down iMac.
A couple of days ago, I installed Evernote. That made it so that my iMac would never shut down or go to sleep or restart because Evernote wanted to remain running all the time. Now Firefox has stopped responding. I cannot open Firefox, nor can I close it, nor can I shut down, restart, or log off of my iMac. I guess this might be related to Evernote, but I cannot find a way to uninstall Evernote. I do not know how to go into Safe Mode on the iMac. Two months ago, I upgraded the software to Mavericks and have had problems ever since. The only browser now working is Safari. I read that I should uninstall and reinstall Firefox, but do not see how, because I cannot open Firefox to get to Help on the Firefox toolbar. I see only the Safari toolbar. I cannot open Help and see Troubleshooting Information because I am not in Firefox, I am in Safari.
Hi,<br>
It sounds like you have several programs that are stuck (not responding). Here are Apple's instructions for "force quitting" applications that are not responding - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3411
If you still can't shutdown your computer after trying that, you can press and hold the power button for several seconds and the computer will shut off.
It's likely that once you can shut the computer down and then restart it, that Evernote and Firefox and other programs will behave normally. -
This started yesterday. I switch on the computer, go into my User account and the Finder icon was bouncing in the deck while a window flashed on about Restoring Windows though you could never click on it because...it kept flashing. The folders on my desktop disappeared so I went into a secondary user account and opened it to find a virus scan. That user account had no issue with the bouncing Finder icon. I downloaded ClamXav and ran it but that being a rarely used user account, it found nothing infected. I went back in in Safe Mode and was able to see my invisible files but the Finder being unresponsive, I could basically only look at them. Also, I couldn't activate ClamXav after downloading it in that user account. All it did was allow me to see my files.
This morning, while I switched on the computer the Safe Mode came on without me holding down the Shift key. Sadly, it didn't get past the third of the little progress bar before shutting down the computer. This happened trying to open either user accounts. I'm shut out. I'm so shocked this happened. I called the ISP and he said everything was normal at his end, naturally in spite of a lot of freezing and not allowing more than one device on wifi at a time. This is an upgraded Internet service after moving to a new place. Otherwise for the few moments it lights up to show me the two users at log in, nothing is visually wrong.
If this has ever happened to anyone, please enlighten me. I've called a Mac repair shop and expect to bring my iMac in. It's barely two years old. : (When posting in Apple Communties/Forums/Message Boards.......It would help us to know which iMac model you have, which OS & version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by completing your system profile and filling in the information asked for.

SHUTTING DOWN IMAC WITH 10.9 & MBA issues
Anyone esle having these problems: NOTE ON ALL PRODUCTS
I AM HAVING ISSUES WITH MID 2011 iMac 21, 16g ram, shutting down with OS 10.9. Pinwheel truning but not shutting down.
I am also seeing the "spinning ball" when moving through different applications or pages within applciations that I had not seen on the previous OS.
Furthermore in regards to my portables; I have two 11" MBA, (mid 2011 4g ram & mid 2012 8g ram and unfortunatly this is not consistant) there seems to be a ghost image (or faint reverse image would better discribe it) of the desktop wallpaper (the universe which I prefer over the wave) on shutting down both of the portables. This did not happen under 10.8.5.
I spoke to Support yesterday who walked me through disk repair and repair permissions and restart in safe mode, however, this morning the iMAC (which was in sleep mode last night) would not start up to the log in from sleep or recognize my trackpad, this is the second morning this has been a problem. Shutting down still seems to be an issue with the imac.
These are defeinelty software issues that need to be addressed in the OS ASAP.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.I tried (on both user accounts):
1. Flushing all the caches using Onyx
2. Deleting the 'com.apple.desktop.plist' files.
3. Switching each user account to non-standard resolutions and back again.
The lack of the rotating cube effect is not the worst of it, as about 50% of the time I switch accounts I get an 'empty' desktop in the account I have just switched to, and I can only get the desktop icons to appear again by switching back and forth a few times. Extremely frustrating.
I am starting to think this is yet another bug in Mavericks or a problem with the graphic drivers for the new GTX 775 / 780 cards. -
I am running Snow Leopard on iMac 09 model, Safari refuses to shut down... even after clicking shut down multiple times.
How can I terminate the safari process?
Thanks.Hold down the option key, right/control-click on the Safari icon in the dock and select 'Force Quit' (it will always be the lower most option).
Note that you can do this with any running application...and if that app is truly hung (or the computer is slow to keep up at that instant), the pop-up dialog will say 'Application not responding...' -
Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 & CC Shutting down iMac when exporting.
Hi!
I have had my iMac for around a year: Mid 2011 iMac 21", 12GB RAM. I switched from FCPX because Adobe just had more for me. FCPX exported fast and fine. But when I move to Adobe suddenly exporting becomes an issue. I have tried both CS6 and CC both do the same thing.
I will be exporting something normaly full 1080p DSLR footage and it will get half way into the export and shut down the mac. The mac will just restart. It does it every single time. The issue has now also started when just trying to render a prodject not even export. I want to use Adobe but I just can't. It does the same exporting from Premiere and AME. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP.
I have taken my iMac into Apple and they have run stress tests for 24 hours and it was fine... Please help! Are youusing FilmConvert by chance? I was seeing the same issue; when I finally tested the same project by duping the sequence and removing only the filmconvert filter - all was well. FilmConvert is causing runaway RAM usage which eventually made the Swap file so big the computer rebooted after a Kernel Panic.

Early 2008 MacPro/UPS shutting down too quickly?
apologies in advance, as I'd bet this has been covered before - just couldn't find it with Search?
the problem is - in broad, general terms - I have an early 2008 8-core hooked up to an APC UPS XS 900 battery backup. The Mac Pro's a couple of years old, as is the APC.
Lately, when power goes down, the UPS battery kicks in just fine, giving me a few moments to save work, as hoped for. But when the power comes back on - and the UPS switches back from battery to line - the MacPro dies. The problem is that, if it's a really quick "power-off/power-on" (say, about 1 sec. or less), having the MacPro shutting down that quickly leaves no opportunity to save anything!
I would pretty much expect the UPS to be at fault here, but recent reading has lead me to believe that the power supply of the MacPro may also be part of the equation.
So just wondering if anyone else has encountered this type of problem, and suggestions?Well, first off you probably need 850W+ UPS.
With APC generally and with that model, and most all Mac workstations since 2003s G5, a 1500VA -
I just ordered an external hard drive for which to use Time Machine. Normally, I shut down my iMac when I'm done using it. If I activate and start using TM, do I need to leave my iMac on and just let it go to sleep?

You can continue to shut down your iMac when you're not using it. However, the initial backup operation will take a number of hours. I'd leave your iMac on until that is finished. -
Hi, My late 2013 imac (13,2), i7 shuts down and is unresponsive for several minutes while I am using lightroom 5 (latest version). I have upgraded to yosemite from SL, removed bought OWC ram and reverted to stock 8gb, run disk doctor several times. Tried OnyX and Cocktail to no avail.
All software up to date - still shut down reoccurs after 5 to 15mins of regular lightroom editing. Ext HD is Lacie quad (where original files stored), usb3.
Most frustrating - as I use lightroom for work (freelance photographer). Please help.I Hope that this helps?

Internet Gateway shuts down iMac G5 when in sleep mode?
I just installed at&t dsl with an at&t gateway last week. If I put my iMac to sleep, within a few minues it shuts down. If I unplug the gateway cable. It stays asleep until I wake it. Is there any setting, etc. to stop it from shutting down other than unplugging it? Thanks.
The gateway is connected by ethernet cable. If I leave it plugged in, the computer goes into sleep mode and then shuts itself down in a few minues. If I unplug the ethernet cable, it stays asleep until I wake it.

I have an iMac (Mid 2007) Intel with Mac OS Lion 10.7.4 For some reason I am unable to shut down my computer. The dialogue box says The Finder can’t quit because some operations are still in progress. How do I determine what operations are still running? I have no clue? Obviously not a sophisticated user.
Thank You! Solved my problem. Have a great week.

cannot shut down imac
what happens when you hold the power button for 5-10 seconds? Will it shut off then? Doing this will not harm your mac.

Cannot shut down iMac after Lion install.
All I get is the grey 'dial' turning slowly on a light blue screen. There are no sounds of disk activity so I have to use the power button at the back to power down completely.
The iMac does 'sleep' OK but still want to power down over night.
