UPS system for iMac G5

APC has a BackUPS ES series which is an affordable line (compared to the other models). I emailed APC tech support and they recommend that I get the APC SmartUPS 750VA. Here's a reply from APC tech support on why BackUPS ES isn't recommended:
"For the Mac system, they have very sensitive power supply box. If you have a Back UPS to back up your iMac, it is really not compatible as the UPS does not supply a sine wave at the output supply when its on battery. This might be dangerous for your Mac if the UPS is supplying power to your Mac when on battery mode."
My problem is that the SmartUPS 750VA is too expensive. I'm thinking of just getting the SmartUPS 420VA since the iMac G5 has a maximum power consumption of 180W. So the 420VA should give me enough time to shut down in the event of a power failure (I will not be plugging anything else). However, APC tech support then told me that 420VA would not be enough because I have to account for the start up power consumption. They said that the startup power consumption for an iMac G5 is around 400-500W, so I would then be overloading the SmartUPS everytime I turn the computer on. Does anybody know if the iMac G5 really takes 400-500W to power up? But even if it does take 400-500W to power up an iMac G5, would I be correct in assuming that it shouldn't be a problem? I say this because I will only be powering up my iMac whenever there IS electricity. So I won't be getting power from the battery backup whenever I do that. I just need the backup battery to shut down in case of a power outage, and not to turn the computer on. So why should the UPS get overloaded?
Also, can anyone else recommend any UPS surge protectors for their iMac G5's? Preferably one that had Automatic Voltage Regulation as well.

I've been running an APC BE 325 on my iMac G5 for the last 8 months. While it provides minimal back up time (6-7 min.) the audible alarm gives me time to shut down properly. Got it a WalMart for $35.
More importantly to me, it affords a greater degree of lightning protection. Here in the Tampa area we tend to get very short blackouts during thunderstorms that last a second or two. Those combined with lightning voltage spike give me reason to worry about the quality of my power supply
I would guess APC is just C.T.A. when they say the iMac powersupplies are fickle. They don't want any blame for any of the known iMac G5 power supply problems.

UPS solution for iMac 27"

I'm considering the 27" iMac which I note from the Specs has a maximum draw of 365W.
I want to protect my system from power failure particularly when I've left the iMac unattended and it is either syncing with MobileMe or Time Machine or rendering video. I'm worried that a power failure during any of these tasks might result in data corruption or physical damage.
Taking that into account I think I need a UPS unit that can power the iMac, a 2TB external harddrive, an Airport Extreme and a cable modem.
I can't see to find wattage figures for anything other than the iMac so I'm struggling to know how expensive a UPS system I need.
Also, is the iMac likely to be drawing the full 365W under the circumstances I've outlined above?

I believe they have some type of calculator on their site where you enter your requirements and it advises you which one might suit your needs. Whether it suits your needs financially may be a different story. Good Luck.

Which UPS System for MacPro 3.33GHz?

I will be getting a Mac Pro 3.33GHz soon, and need to find the right UPS System. I will be connecting the Mac Pro and an external HD to the UPS system.
I want to have a UPS system that will provide protection for the above devices, with enough protection to spare for several other devices (a second external HD, iBook G4, and an older computer, SE/30)
Also, I need a UPS system that will automatically save, then shut down, for times I'm not at the computer during a power outage.
Any suggestions? I'd like to keep the price around $200-300 if possible.
I called the Apple Store to find out what the Wattage would be on the MacPro 3.33 GHz, but they weren't sure. The technician said it should be somewhere between 600-800 Watts.

The APC SMART 1300VA or RS1500VA would be top of the list. Even CyberPower 1500VA $189.
I added a 1hr battery pack to RS1500, a feature not available on 1300VA model which gave 75 minutes, enough for when installing or doing something that I couldn't quit and would take 20 minutes.
I'd get a small UPS for the peripherals - that is what I do, modem, peripherals, one lamp even.
It isn't just the 865W possible, or that Nehalem Xeon can really have higher peak, or that you may use GTX 285 or ATI 5000, you also need to take into account extreme inrush current and on boot or wake from sleep that all Mac Pros suffer from.
I'd wait and hope that Intel and Apple release 2010 Mac Pro hex-core Gulftowns if you need what it seems like.
There actually isn't a huge difference between 2.66 vs 2.93 vs 3.33 but Gulftown should be more powerful "tock" - and after a year.

UPS suggestions for iMac...

Just got an iMac and I need to make sure that I'm protected from power issues etc. I want something better that a surge protector power strip. I'm thinking of one of the APC UPS (battery backup).
Anyone have experiences with the APC UPS on Mac's? Or does anyone have other suggestions for having a UPS?

Which system for iMac 400MHz 384MB RAM?

When buying a used iMac G3 refer to this table - it will give you a good idea whether the specs on ebay are bull or not - it especially helps in finding out the exact colour of iMac you're getting and the VRAM/Video card etc. For example there never was a 500MHz iMac with CD-ROM (unless the owner built it to order).
First question. I've never had any success with booting form an external USB device - it's worth a go though!
If not; use the Media Exchange Programme from Apple to exchange your Tiger DVD for CDs.
Second question: iMac Slot Loaders have 2 x PC100 168pin DIMM slots under a fold open cover (no screw driver required - just a coin!). In my experience, under OS 9, I used to throw in any old cheap RAM - bought from anywhere cheap (I was at Uni at the time - and my house mates (PC owners) and I would chop and change computer parts all over! The final state I maxed it out with 1Gb of PC133 RAM from Crucial and my mother is now using that machine at university . Personally I've found newer Macs (i.e. iMac G4 is my latest) and OS X to be more fussy when it comes to RAM. I would recommend buying from a Mac friendly supplier if you plan on using OS X.
It needn't be much more expensive (- and you'll get it half the price we pay over here). Check out RAMSEEKER for good prices. Obviously living this side of the world I have no real experience of their service - but it is reputed to be good!
Before you install OS X on an iMac G3 for the first time you must update the firmware (whilst booted in OS 9.1).

UPS suggestions for small office

I have four Mac Pro workstations and recently experienced a power outage. Two designers lost about an hours work each. Finally decided to bite the bullet and buy UPS systems for all the workstations. Any suggestions?
All are Mac Pro stations with 26" LCD monitors, external 500g hard drives (one station has 3 backup 1 terabyte drives for video). I only need these to run 15-30 minutes after an outage to save the files.
Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Insure that you are running off a circuit that can handle the load. Adding 4 UPS of 1500VA won't help, and to have 20-30 minutes, I went with an extra battery pack which added 1 hr (now have 75 minutes but there are times when even 15 minutes isn't enough, and 40 minutes was more realistic).
But you probably want to look at something that would cover patch into your electrical circuit(s) more than just add stand alone units for each. That would be cheaper and easier, under $2k, but a large rackmount that would provide 3000VA costing $8k and up (more like $12k) is what I would contemplate.

Photoshop elements 12 for iMac printing undersize

I have purchased Photoshop Elements 12 for iMac from Applestore and when I print a photo "actual size" the printout is only 93% of true size.
I have tried to print to a Canon MP610 and a Canon MG5550 with the latest drivers installed and get the same result.
If I print the photo from either the Apple iPhoto app. or from the Apple Preview app. the printout is the correct size.
Just in case there was anything amiss with the photoshop Elements 12 installation I uninstalled the app. and reinstalled it and still prints are 93% of true size.
I believe that Photoshop Elements 12 for iMac when purchased from Applestore is a special edition software.
I am also running the latest release of Mavericks OSX operating systems for iMac.
Any Ideas ?

I do not believe this will help because the same thing happens with both of the printers I have and so think it is unlikely that both printers have the identical problem. I also draw your attention to an earlier reply to hatstead describing how the size reduction also applies to PDF files generated from the PSE print window. Also when an image is generated using PSE saved and then printed using another application such as Apples "Preview" the printout is printed the correct size. As mentioned earlier, the version of PSE 12 I am using is a special edition software exclusive to Apple iTunes app. store. This version does not have the photo management part of the software but includes more of the tools that come with the full photoshop version. This it has been tailored to work with Apple iPhoto. Please see iTunes app store for more info. This may mean in view of what you said that the issue may only exist in this version of the software.

APC UPS for iMac

I posted this in another thread, but since I have a new Q I am posting it again so it is tracked properly...I have 3 brand new iMac (24 inches, 3 GHz) and 1 MBA in my small business. Living in Seattle's suburbs, we have several 2-3 seconds power outages several times every winter. The issue is not if the UPS is 25% or 100% of the price of my iMac as the time we spent working on something is worth much more as we charge $200/hr to our customers with our consulting service. Last night I lost one file that got corrupted. It will take me 3-4 hrs to do it again... so I am buying my UPS right now! Before I make the final choice, can somebody confirm me if the power management feature will work with the BE750G? Pricing is not much of an issue. anything in the $90-$250 will do it for us as we lost more than that last night. I found the BE750G for $86 at Amazon and the SUA750 for $270. I really need the power management functionality as we leave the Macs powered on all the time and we are not always there to start a manual shut down.

I hate to say this but APC phone support is extremely poor (or t least the reps I got to talk to). First the sales rep told me the 750G was a discontinued model... when I told him I was looking at that on THEIR web site he acted surprised... so he moved me up the chain to second tier TECH support. Second tier support said that for iMacs the recommend smart UPS because those are better, but could not articulate why it was better (other than saying that they were more expensive because those units are better , He had no idea about switchover times, and I swear I am not making this up, he asked what version of Windows I was running, (I guess a valid question on Intel based Macs) etc. So after that experience I am very leery of trusting their advice and rather learn from a fellow iMac user that is indeed using either a 750G series or the most expensive Smart UPS 750 and confirm me if indeed switchover is fast enough and the USB connection will work well and start a shut down process if needed...

Unless it is for reasons of poor eyesight, it isn't necessary to write in all caps.
Depends how much you want to spend. This one is inexpensive and produces decent sound. But it won't necessarily be room filling (that is, depending on the size of your room.) You just hook it up to the headphone jack.

UPS and our iMac // Will not allow iMac to sleep.

We have a Cyberpower UPS (CP685AVR) for our 20" iMac 2.66Ghz (last gen)and it works great. It has a USB interface to communicate with the iMac's power manager, and tells me how much juice is left, how the cells are doing, etc.
The only problem is the UPS will not allow the iMac to sleep; if I try to manually put it to sleep, it will wake again in 10-15sec. If I disconnect the UPS, the iMac works just fine. There are no third-party drivers, either. Cyberpower relies on Apple's built-in UPS support. I've been leaving the USB cable unplugged but would like like to use it if possible.
Has anyone had an issue like this, and what has been your experience? Thanks.

I won't buy Cyberpower anymore since I had one burn up on me so I have not had any experience with their newer models. I have 2 APC's and they work fine with the built in Energy Saver settings.
Are you connecting the USB directly to the back? I'm not sure if it will help but you might try resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US

Project/Task Management Software for iMac, iPad and iPhone

Hi,
I work at a Espresso Bars company in Sydney and we have a small but busy Design & Marketing department. We're looking for the best, yet simplest software so we can manage all the marketing and design projects.
I've seen a few good Online Management Software but they are quite expensive ($25+ per month per user). The good thing about those systems is that you can access it from anywhere and people can collaborate, ask questions about a project, give feedback about a design, enter a new task or tick as completed, etc... And you can use it on an iMac, an iPad and an iPhone.
I came across Projector for iMac and iPad, but it is not online, if you want to share the project from iMac to iPad you have to conect your iPad to your computer and sync it. It also works by projects, so there is no way for you to see in a single screen all the projects you're currently working on and the process of them. So, although it being very user friendly and excellent UI, not sure if it is what we want.
I wanted to ask you if you know about another Project/Task Management Software that we can use on an iMac, iPad and perhaps and iPhone as well. Something that you either buy the app once or if you have to pay a monthly fee it needs to be very low. If it is online it would be much better! but everything would work I reckon.
User friendly and good UI software are preferred.
