UPS (the courier) to Test Apple Quality

Got the new MacBook Pro 17". I bought it for my girlfriend, but it's so **** pretty I'll keep it for myself. Forget Her... I think this MBP will be a great chick magnet. HaHa. Seriously, are the Apple designers targeting females? The packaging and the little white things look like makeup containers. (I just came from the macho/masochistic Windows/PC world.)
About UPS and other couriers testing Apple Quality (About my experiences receiving products shipped via Couriers):
When the UPS guy handed the MBP shipment to me, it had a fist-sized hole on the side of the brown box. I swore at the guy, then accepted it. Thankfully, when I opened the brown box, I found the real Apple box suspended within the brown box. Fantastic Idea! Apparently the hole in the box was punched with some quick force because there was a dent on the inner Apple box. I shudder to think how much acceleration the MBP was exposed to. The MBP is working fine so far, but thinking about what it went through during shipping really leaves a bad taste.
I had also received shipment of a Mac Pro a few weeks ago via UPS, and it hadn't fared any better, from the looks of the box.
The Airport Extreme Base Station, received separately, was no good out of the box. It was shipped in a 18"x18" box with no packing material! Have to blame Apple for that one.
My point is, Couriers: Is it a case of "we can't live with them and can't live without them"? I don't suppose there's anything Apple can do to improve the behavior of couriers? ****!

Just had this discussion yesterday with my wife. I've ordered two laptops (a Vaio and the new 17" MBP) in recent months and was not home for either arrival. Both shipped with FedEx. In both cases, my wife stayed home to sign for and safely store what was to have arrived by 10:30. In both cases, FedEx failed to show and miraculously had "truck problems" twice in a row delivering to our house! How perfectly odd, no? In both cases, they asked my wife to take the remainder of her day off from work while they sorted it out - just couldn't be bothered to come up with a delivery time and stick to it. Well, she have them **** this time around and they finally got it to her - but she didn't arrive to work until well after lunch. If she were properly compensated for her time, my MBP would have gotten a lot more affordable (not that it's Apple's fault or place to do the compensating but the problem here is that none of us are ultimately the couriers' clients so what can we get out of them other than dumb looks?).
But then I could go on about a domestic UPS shipment that once wound up in Germany and got stuck in Customs there (and coming back) because it never belonged out of the US and thus didn't have any int'l paperwork to go along with it. And my ability to earn a living was directly coupled to receipt of that package, thus I lost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Yes, oh yes, they all suck dearly. Actually, DHL was fantastic but sadly they didn't survive the crunch here in the US...

  • I bought an IPhone 5 in the US last Jan. The bettery was tested problem at my local Apple Store in Shanghai, China. Must I send it to the store where I bought it or Can any Apple Store in the US help me repair it? Thank you.

    Recently, my Iphone shuts down at 50%+ bettery. My local Apple Store told me that the bettery was tested problem and needs to be repaired or changed. Since the phone is still under a year warranty, I was suggested to return it to the US Apple Store for help. Please let me know if I can send it to any store in the US or the store where I bought. Also, I don't find the email receipt. Will it be a problem for repair? Your quick response will be very appreciated. Thank you.

BTW I tried using doferent setings in compressor from CBR and VBR I even pushed up the setings to 8 or 9 BR and still no luck !

    Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
    Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
    In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
    Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
    After rendering, export QT self contained.
    Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
    Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
    Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
    Submit burn and check quality on TV.

  • Fan runs all the time.. Apple Hardware Test Error

    The fan on my 13" Macbook Pro recently started running continously. I tried resseting the SMC per directions on the apple support page, when that didnt work I ran the Apple Hardware Test from my install cd, and got the following error: 4SNS/1/4000000 : TNOD-128.000
    I've googled everywhere, and can't find what that means!
    Any ideas?

    Hi Alex FLB, welcome to Apple Discussions!
    I had this exact error code (4SNS/1/4000000) on my iMac a couple months ago, along with the same symptoms. The code refers to one or more faulty temperature sensors on the logic board of the unit. Because the MBP isn't getting a reading from a temperature sensor, it has no idea what the actual temperature of the computer is, so it runs the fans at high speed in a fail-safe mode to prevent damage.
    What this means is that you'll have to either take the machine to an Apple store or call Applecare over the phone to initiate a repair. Tell them the symptoms, and have them run the AHT or give them the code. If the machine is still under the one year warranty (or Applecare) then the logic board should be replaced free of charge for you. It's the only way to replace these temperature sensors, as they are incorporated into the board itself and cannot be separated from it.

  • Apple quality going down?

    Is it just me or is Apple quality going down the tube?  I just got a brand new Apple Magsafe Airline Adapter in the mail for a trip I'm taking - It's DOA.  A few days ago, my Magic Mouse died.  A few weeks before I bought an Airport Extreme...couldn't get it to work.  My first iPad had a problem the first week ...had to get it replaced.  At least I haven't had any problems yet with my MBA (knock on wood).
    I know these are made in China...I'm just curious if others are having as many problems as I am.  I recently switched to Apple because of the "quality" and now I'm wondering if it was the right choice....it's not like this stuff is inexpensive either!

    I think that Apple product is going down for sure at this point. It is not only in the quality of the product they made, but it also includes the customer service they give nowaday. I bought an ipad 2 a year  ago and thought that the quality should be pretty good. However, I just discovered recently that the built-in microphone is defect when I was trying to use FACETIME to communicate with my wife. I brougnt my ipad 2 to apple store and they confirmed it. However, they said that they will be able to do anything since it is out of warranty.
    Considering the fact that I ordered this online and it tooks ~5-7 days to deliver the product to my door. It takes 3-4 days for me to bring the ipad to apple store since I can only do it on weekend. I strongly believed that I did not break the "built-in microphone" and it is a defect product. However, they don't care. I guess that it is such a big company now so that they do not care about a single care anymore.
    Even if it is broken in the 11 days (out of warranty period), this indicates that their quality is going down for sure. Anyway, I guess I will refuse to buy their product from now on.
    If you are goingt o buy anything from Apple, I strongly recommend you to test everything first.

  • My Mac is doing strange things: delaying between users, mouse flickering and bouncing, gets stuck with rainbow wheel flickering. I ran the appel hardware test and it detected an error: 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1233 Does anybody know what that means? HELP!

    My imac is doing strange things:
    -delaying between users: when closing session it goes to blue, then takes a while to appear users signin box, and then wont recognize mouse command to enter until a couple of minutes later... then everything seems alright until....
    -it gets stuck between things, the rainbow wheel appears and its just delays there forever....
    -and every now and then the mouse starts flickering and bouncing wildly onscreen.

    WZZZ answered about where to get iStat. And do check the SMART status. If it is an overheating problem due to a fan or logic board problem, your hard drive is possibly cooking itself to death. If so it isn't a faulty hard drive even though the hard drive might fail. So assuming it's a temperature problem, even if you are able to repair things on the disk with software, that is working on symptoms, not causes. I could be wrong however.
    RE: AppleCare: Your iMac came with one year of AppleCare (Apple's warranty program), but within the first year you can buy 2 more years. You have to extend by the one year anniversary of purchase of the computer. Your 10,1 is too old to still be in the first year, and since you asked what it was, I'm sure you don't have it. Bottom line meaning is that whatever this problem turns out to be, you'll have to pay for it. Unless there is something like this. It is for 2011 iMacs with certain Seagate drives. You can put in your serial number for fun, but it looks like yours is too old. Lastly, some people have had Apple help them anyway if it is just out of warranty, but many have not. Your machine is one of these. Type in 10,1 in the search box. Is there an Apple Store near you? Just b/c it's out of warranty doesn't mean you shouldn't have it looked at by Apple. But no one here can say at all what Apple will or will not do.

    Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
    The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
    How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
    To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
    If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
              OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
              The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
              You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
    In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • Im running windows 7 64 bit. installed itunes 10.5.4.1 and now cds will not import or play. If i have the cd in the drive and then open itunes it will importor play but after removed the next disc will not read. the system has passed the cd/dvd test.

    I ve tried completely removing itunes and reinstalling. also unchecked autocorrect and find art and track names which did not work as well. Any ideas of how to fix this?

    I bought a used iPad1 that has the former user's apple id. I have an apple id myself that i can use to purchase apps, etc.
    1. However, do i need to reset the device to use my ID? I've made purchases from my laptop and need to sync them to the ipad.
    2. My latop is authorized and all the connectivity tests etc are ok. I get the message do I want to erase my library when i sync. there was music that i like on the device when i got it. I don't want to lose it by  saying yes to deleting it. Oh yeah i don't think this music is in the itunes on the ipad. what can i do?

    You should log out of the currently logged in account by tapping on the id in Settings > Store and you should then do Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings to put it back to factory settings (which the previous owner should have done) - you can then sync your own content to it.

    I lost one of the earbuds for my Apple In-ear Headphones with Mic.
    In case you don't see why this could be a big deal, let me remind you that these little earphones will run you $79 new. Naturally, I'm sure there's got to be a reasonable solution that another owner of these headphones may know of or can share with me.
    Should I bring it to the Apple store or will they just laugh at me?
    Basically, all I'm missing is the jelly-like in-ear bud on one side (which is easily replaceable; I just need to know where I can order GENUINE extras from).

    I've tried several and the best by far is the Sennheiser MM50 iP ($99 at the apple store). The sound is incredible, particularly the low frequecy response (bass). These are even better than the Bose Triports I used for my iPod, plus they have the mic and button for recieving calls and ipod playback. I also have the airdrives, which don't even compare for sound quality and range because they aren't in-ear (they sit directly in front of the ear canal). I still use the airdrives in situations where I want music distraction but still want to hear what's happening around me, but for in-ear sound quality and iPhone functionality I don't think you're going to find better for the Sennheisers for under $100. In fact I don't think their is anything under $250 right now that would match it for performance, comfort and functionality.
    Note: these are asymmetrical which means the cord for the right earbud goes behind your neck to the right ear. I found this strange at first but now I actually like it because it allows you to pull the earlplugs out and just let them rest over your neck/shoulders.

    IP_FROM_TWO
    V_TWO:
    TXV_TWO with a text "View two",
    BTN_BACK + action BACK,
    OP_TO_ONE
    IP_FROM_ONE.
    There are two links between views builds.
    I cann my application APPL deploy without problem and without error messages.
    I see my V_ONE im browser.

I then did the reset on the phone (erase all data... from settings) and it went through and activated and everything was good... I used the phone for about a month with no problems at all, even had my apple ID in the icloud and everything... well ios 7.0.6 came out and I used my computer to restore the phone, because I feel that the cord and computer gives it a better restore, it did great no problems, and when it went to the part where I went to activate the phone, I get a enter your apple id and password to complete activation... Wait... why is this up i thought, I thought I did everything like I suppose to to succesfully switch it to me, the new owner... but now its asking for some C******@yahoo.com....     I bought a iphone 4 from a guy on craigslist, I knew about ios 7.0 having the lock thing, but when I met him, his simcard was in the phone, I tested the phone with his simcard in from of him. The phone looked great with no problems and I even got the box with the accesories, so I knew it was his... I then did the reset on the phone (erase all data... from settings) and it went through and activated and everything was good... I used the phone for about a month with no problems at all, even had my apple ID in the icloud and everything... well ios 7.0.6 came out and I used my computer to restore the phone, because I feel that the cord and computer gives it a better restore, it did great no problems, and when it went to the part where I went to activate the phone, I get a enter your apple id and password to complete activation... Wait... why is this up i thought, I thought I did everything like I suppose to to succesfully switch it to me, the new owner... but now its asking for some C******@yahoo.com....     Macbook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. I tried to start in safe mode, but get this same screen. The only thing different is that I added the zedge update app to do a sync for adding ringtones to my apple cell phone. How can I get a good boot. I am fairly new to apple computer.

    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
    Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
    If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying.  The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
    Check the health of the disk.  Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R).  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup. 
    Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.  Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
    If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable.  A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
    If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so.  If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one.  Any 1 TB external drive will do.
    Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk. 
    Reformat the external disk.  (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
    Boot in Recovery Mode.  Start Disk Utility.  Plug in the new disk.  Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
    Partition Layout > Single Partition
    Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
    Apply
    Select the Restore tab.
    Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
    Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
    Click on Restore.
    It may take a long time for the backup.
    If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
    If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk.  If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more.  If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally?  If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
    If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.

    I am trying to locate one of the serial numbers, but cant find the last box.  Can I get the serial number from Apple. It was registered and now it is not showing up as one of my products.

    The easiest way to find your serial number is this Open Itunes...click help... run diagnostics.....(tick or untick as necessary) so that you just have ticked the last two,  device connectivity and device sync.  run these tests. it will say no ipod/ipad found but will give results of test....scroll down to bottom of results... here you will find the serial number of your last attached devices.
