UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) wakes up the Mac from sleep

My Mac Mini continuously wakes up from sleep because of a usb event. I've found that this event isn't other that the UPS connected by the ethernet-USB cable. Have you found a solution for this matter that affects many people, as I've read in the past discussions?

Whether it is accurate or not is a side issue. And because these are usually a custom type cable, harder to replace, but many times all it takes for a problem is to have a faulty usb cable or contact (or Firewire).
I've never had an APC UPS interfere and I've used more than a few and have 2 currently supporting my system (one for computer and monitor, one for peripherals).
How old is it and is the battery still fully charged and functioning properly? I found that APC has great software for their UPS, in Windows, but dorky and no features really in OS X and now "not needed" and conflicts with Tiger 10.4.4+. But in Vista, a full set of feedback statistics and to control some variables.

  • UPS (uninterruptible power supply) best suited to Mac Pro?

    Hello
May i get some advice please?
I need to buy an uninterruptible power supply because of the powercuts round here. I live in the UK
I'd like to use it on my Mac. I have a Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon, 12 GB RAM, 4 HDDs, with two monitors and a 9 port USB hub which has the occasional attachment
I've been looking at APC's units but have come to a snag in finding out what kind of wattage I should look for in a UPS.
I have read that it can be variable, based on many factors.
So instead of being overwhelmed/confused etc I thought I'd just ask you guys
Anyone recommend me what I should be looking for in a UPS that'll serve this purpose, and any makes and models you have found to work very well?
If possible, nothing at 'enterprise level' in cost, i don't have that kind of budget.
    Thanks!

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!
The power consumption of the various G5s is here, and in the links at the bottom of that page
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303540
This Original - April 2004 - dual 2 is rated at 605watt max. - but I haven't seen the actual watts go much over 400 when measured with a device similar to this
    http://www.smarthomeusa.com/Shop/Smart-Energy/Item/P4460/
You can enter the details of your kit in the calculator here
    http://apc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm
which will give you an idea of the rating required.
    I, too, have an APC, but a Smart-UPS 1000VA
    http://apc.com/resource/include/techspecindex.cfm?base_sku=SUA1000&totalwatts=50
or actually, since it is 230volt mains here
    http://apc.com/resource/include/techspecindex.cfm?base_sku=SUA1000I&totalwatts=50
which works very well - and is more than adequate for the G5. If you connect the UPS USB control port to the G5, System Preferences > Energy Saver will shut the G5 down semi-gracefully when the UPS battery gets low and the mains hasn't come back on.
Please post again if you have any questions. Good Luck.

  • Is the trackpad supposed to also wake up the computer from sleep?

    Hello,
I am not sure if I am able to before, but right now making a swipe or even a click on my trackpad doesn't wake up the computer from sleep - although typing on the keyboard does. Is this really the case? Or can the trackpad also wake the computer? I've already tried resetting the PRAM but it would still not do the trick. It doesn't bother me much though.
    Thanks!

Swiping the trackpad should also wake the computer. Touching a keyboard key that is benign is usually preferred. i.e. shift key.

Hi - I'm new to using a UPS with integrated software, but I have 4 daisy-chained external hard drives connected to my iMac, and I'd like to do unattended backups overnight while having the UPS available to protect the main and external drives in case of an outage. What do I need to have in order to be able to have a safe, automatically-triggered shutdown in the case of an outage? I've read cautions about APC units in this regard. Thanks very much for any specific feedback, Keith
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
As long as you get a major-brand UPS with a USB cable that plugs into your Mac, you've probably got everything you need.
I have an APC that used it's own "Power Chute" software on Panther, but the software isn't compatible or needed with Leopard, since Leopard already has what you need.
When you plug the UPS in, your "Energy Saver" System Preference will have an additional entry in the selection box at the top: in addition to +Power Adapter+ you'll see UPS. When you select that, there's a separate set of Sleep options; plus a separate panel that shows the charge level of the batteries, and three places to specify when to shutdown: When it's been on UPS for x minutes; When the UPS has y minutes of power left; or when the battery level reaches z percent.
Also, you will get a message when utility power fails and the UPS switches to battery power.
So all you have to do is plug your Mac and those drives (and perhaps your modem) in to the Battery plugs on the UPS, set your preferences, and you're done.
I live in central Florida, the lightning capital of the U.S. (not to mention those pesky hurricanes), and the APC (and Energy Saver settings) works just like it should.

  • APC UPS (uninterruptible power supply) not restarting after power restored

I just bought an APC UPS 1500VA Smart-UPS (model SUA1500) to protect:
-- iMac 20" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB memory and 500GB internal disk
-- (2) external Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750GB USB drives
-- (1) external MacGurus Burly Firewire enclosure with (4) 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives
    -- DSL modem
    -- Ethernet hub
-- Airport Express (b/g-model, not the new n model)
The UPS is connected to my Mac via USB cable. The UPS shows up in System Profiler as "Smart-UPS 1500 FW:601.3.D USB FW:8.1". It also appears in System Preference Energy Saver pane.
I have configured the Energy Saver preferences pane to shut down the computer when 75% of the UPS battery remains. And to restart after power failure (both on power adapter and on UPS).
So I cut the power to the UPS and the computer properly shuts down when the battery reaches 75%. A couple of minutes later, the UPS turns itself off. All good so far.
PROBLEM 1: When utility power is restored, the UPS does not restart. APC's documentation says it should. Is the Mac sending some sort of shut-down command to the UPS over the USB cable that is preventing the USB from restarting?
PROBLEM 2: After I manually start the UPS (by turning it on after utility power is restored), the Mac ignores its setting to "automatically restart after power failure." I want the machine to restart itself because it is my backup server, music server, and provides file sharing access for other computers on my home-office network.
Anyone else having trouble getting their UPS or Mac to restart after a power failure? Any thoughts? Any configuration settings I'm not getting right?
    Many thanks.

The "Restart automatically after a power failure" option only restarts if the computer was running when power failed. Since you had it shutdown before the power failed, it's not going to restart. Maybe Mac servers, or the server version of OSX, have more options.
Instead of shutting down when the UPS battery is almost dead, you could just stop all the applications that write to disk, so there won't be any disk operations in progress, then wait for the power to fail. It will then restart when the power come back. You should have something running to monitor the UPS, in case power returns, and the UPS doesn't shut off its output. In that case you should have it restart your applications.

  • UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) settings are grayed out

I recently purchased an APC Back-UPS ES 450. The APC software is not compatible with Leopard, but that shouldn't matter because Leopard has built-in UPS support. However, looking at the UPS settings after plugging the usb cable into my laptop, it seems there is some sort of compatibility issue.
    I've posted a screenshot here: http://www.hover.ca/ups.jpg
I'm aware of a previous posting here with the same issue (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6917927), but it was never resolved.
Any help would be wildly appreciated!
    - gabe

OK - so I was on the phone with APC tech support for over an hour trying to solve the problem - they were really helpful, even had a software guy looking into it while I waited, but the bad news is that they were totally stumped as well. Some important insights did come out of it, however.
    1) It turns out some other UPS models from different companies are subject to the same issue. So the common denominator is the Mac OS.
    2) I'm running Windows XP on Parallels, so the tech asked me to install the APC Powerchute software there. Installed without a hitch and I was talking to the UPS right away. This didn't make a difference on the Mac side though. So that again points to the Mac OS as the root of the problem.
My 2 cents: APC should never have relied on Apple to take care of the software side. Apple has alot of balls in the air and probably isn't too worried about rare cases like this. But it sure as **** makes a difference to APC, because, while I won't be abandoning my Mac OS anytime soon, I will most definitely be returning this APC unit in exchange for something that explicitly support Mac OS 10.5. And in all likelihood my relationship with APC is over.
Anyway, thanks to everyone here who chimed in on my problem!
    Cheers,

  • I howard has an iMac, and when she tries to wake the Mac from sleep, she has to reboot it instead.

I Howard have an iMac, and when trie to wake the iMac from  a 12hr to 24hr sleep, i have to reboot it instead.  I am Running snow lepord. I tried resetting thr PRam but that work as a temporary fix. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this. Thanks

    Hi Howard,
    Snow Leoprd/10.6, or Lion/10.7?
What all, especially USB things are connected?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I suggest changing the power settings: Start / Control Panel / Power Options.  In the left column there are different categories for making the computer Sleep.  Check the settings to assure they are to your liking.  You can change any of the settings to "Never" if you choose to do so.

  • Any suggestions for an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)?

We need a power backup and decided to go with a Voltage Independent (also called "Line-Interactive", "Single-Conversion", "Delta-Conversion") device.

  • Multi-server UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply for 2 Xserves

What Multi-server UPS are you using?
I have 2 Xserves and one of the UPSs is dead. I want to replace it with a multi-server/computer UPS.
    Can anyone recommend one?
    Thanks

MGE UPS can protect multiple servers. With the "network card" option installed you can gracefully shutdown numerous servers including Macs and PCs on the same UPS. The documentation is OK but it is a direct translation from French and can be difficult at times. The products work well and we have a few of our clients successfully using these UPS. The application is based on a web server/client. The server is embedded in the network card and the client is installed on each of the servers connected to the UPS. Extra batteries can be added to increase uptime.

Since I installed snow I get a recurring message warning me that my UPS ( its a CyberPower 1000AVR )is at a low level. It isnt - it shows as 100% in the menu bar and at full charge on its own LCD display and I never got this message with 10.5. Is this a bug? Any help appreciated.

So far, there's one confirmed report (yours) and one possible (RoadWanderer's). Since we haven't heard back from SnoopyEars, we can't count that one.
If you tried my previous suggestions and neither helped, then maybe something is wrong, but doesn't seem widespread.
I'd recommend trying another USB cable, and plugging it into a different port on your Mac, making sure the connections are snug at both ends.
If the problem persists, and/or we get any more reports, then you might want to contact CyberPower, since other makes don't seem to be involved. They may have more reports, indicating an OSX or other problem.

  • Graphical application for an APC uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?

    Hi,
I have a APC UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and I'm looking for an application that shows me more than just some percentages of the capacity of the battery. I know that and some settings can be done by the energy saving settings.
But the Parachute application for windows, shows you the present load of the UPS so you can see if it is possible to power additional devices with it.
It also shows you some more in detail information.
So I was thinking of a tool like "APC Tracker" from Equinux.com, but 112$ is more than I paid for the UPS! So that is a no go. And now I was wondering if some of you might know an alternative?
I know that there is a packet called NUT for MacPorts and also APCUSPd. But from what I've read. Both will interfere with Apples Energy Saving settings.

Agreed, but I don't see how to do that in conjunction with the automatic shutdown capability of the UPS. I doubt the current OS is capable of responding to a usb signal by waking up then shutting down. It seems unlikely that apple or the UPS vendors would anticipate that someone would want this feature.
On the contrary, that's exactly what people want, and Apple and at least some of the vendors do just that.
The U.P.S. doesn't actually do the shutdown, of course, OSX does, and you're talking about two different things anyway.
A good U.P.S. sends more than one signal. It sends frequent updates of the power level of the batteries, and notifies OSX when it's on battery power.
OSX wakes a sleeping Mac up immediately when the utility power fails, so it can send a message.
The automatic shut down is scheduled, via System Preferences, by your choice of time on battery power, estimated time left on the battery, and/or remaining battery power level (percent).
APC's +Power Chute+ software, which I used with Panther, worked similarly, and I'd expect other decent 3rd-party U.P.S. software to have similar capabilities.

  • Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

    Frank and All,
The following answer to your question above is complicated, but I hope it explains why my question was formed with so much frustration in it.
I have an OpenOffice(OO) Macro that was launched with Calendar at 6pm each business night. It ran properly in all Apples operating systems until I Hit Maverick(OSX10.9). From then on, the AppleScript would run from one to 3 days, then would disappear from the Calendar entry. The Calendar alert would still run, but the "OpenFile" section of the alert would disappear. I also was running elgato EyeTV HD during the day, so I would use energy saver to put my MacBook Pro to sleep at 12 Midnight and wake it again at 9am. I picked up a used Mac Mini to do the EyeTV stuff, provide AppleTV the files in H264 format through iTunes' media share, and found it had plenty of power to do the 6pm automated stuff simultaneously as well. Because I still wanted to run the OpenOffice Macro on my MacBook Pro at 6pm, and wanted to use it for a host of other things when I was on the road, I wanted it to sleep most of the time and only wake up automatically to run the 6pm OO Macro. When I called Apple about the issue I was having with Maverick and Calendar loosing the OpenFile command as part of the Alert Message, they told me the no longer supported answering AppleScript Questions but they now would support Automator questions. I pointed out that the OpenFile would also fail after one to three days if I used a Calendar Alert to launch an Automator App. At first, I did not like Automator, but now I see why Apple is pushing us to use it. Automator adds a TIME STAMP ID to the Apps developed in Automator so the first time you launch the App after a change to it, you must reply to a dialog message saying that this is the first time you are running this version of the App. If a Scammer has replaced your app with one that can reek havoc on your computer, the replacement app will not run unless you are there to agree that you know where the modified app came from and click the OK button to continue (BRILLIANT, Enhanced Security idea on Apples part). I also noticed that after Mountain Lion, the Applescript delay timing was all screwed up as well. Well I tried to use LaunchD Task Scheduler to circumvent the Calendar Problem and that worked until I upgraded to Yosemite Last week. Then LaunchD no longer worked and I am only into a few days of using The Calendar Launched Automator App to see if it will continue to run.
But I think I solved the dilemma I was having with opening an Automator App in a Sleeping Mac. I Googled up the following question, "AppleScript to wake up computer".  I went thru several complex responses until I found this on that is INCREDIBLE EASEY! What came back was a brettterpstra.com  response from Feb 20th,2014. What it said, in a Quick Tip: caffeinated your Terminal Article,  if you wanted to wake a Mac from sleep, use the Terminal command named "Caffeine -u -t 1". I placed it in an Automator Most Used Action called "Run Shell Script -- Caffeine -u -t 1" and it worked!  Now, I can put my Mac to Sleep but at 6pm, the Automator App will launch, run the "Caffeine -u- -t 1" command and proceed to work as if I had awakened the Mac From Sleep mode by pressing a keyboard key and had run the Automator Script with a double click.
Sorry for the long, drawn-out reply, but maybe this will help others.
