Upstream bandwidth QoS profile 5508 WLC

Hello,
Is it possible, through a QoS profile, to control how much bandwidth a user gets to use for upstream traffic?  I can easily set limits for downstream traffic, via the per user bandwidth contracts, but it is not obvious to me on how to control upstream traffic.
Any and all info is appreciated!
Thanks

upstream traffic needs to be defined at L3, via your QoS settings. As you've said, the profile on the WLC is downstream only.

  • WLC QoS Profiles not applying egress

In regards to QoS profiles on the WLC. I have applied a profile to a newly created WLAN and set the Per User Bandwidth to 512k and it seems to be kicking in on the ingress only, does anyone know if this is supposed to work ingress AND egress or is it just designed to work one way?  I have a 4402-25 with Cisco 3500 AP's and am running the 7.0.98 code.
If it is designed to work one way only is there a different way to apply it ingress and egress simultanenously off the WLC?

    Hello,
WLC QoS bandwidth policies do in fact only apply in the downstream direction. Clients will still be able to upload at an unlimited speed.
You will need to look at another solution if you need to limit upload speeds -- one example would be user-based rate limiting on the 6500 platform:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/prod_white_paper0900aecd803e5017.html
There are likely other solutions available as well.

  • QoS - Upstream Bandwidth

Just wondering if there is any more info about this setting. I really don't have a problem to fix, just seeking a better understanding regarding this setting.
I have myself and many clients on SIP based hosted VOIP (Vocalocity) and this has helped improve call quality.  We add the mac address for each phone and give it high priority.
In most cases when there is a multitude of upstream speed it seems that manually setting this number to below the actual speed really helps to keep the PCs from hogging the upload speed and thus preventing latency.

    1. It helps a lot if you post the router you use. Different models have different settings.
    2. Generally, it's correct what you see. The auto setting tries to use the full bandwidth available. Of course, bandwidth usually varies with most ISPs thus you will probably see more packet loss in moments when the real bandwidth is less (i.e. usually due to other customer's traffic).
Thus if you set it to a lower value it will reduce packet loss because the total upstream traffic won't hit the ceiling of what's actually possible at that moment.
Of course, on the other hand a lower value won't really let use the total available bandwidth at moments when there is more.
Example: 8 Mbit/s DSL line. Speedtests show varying 4-5 Mbit/s throughput, but never or very rarely below 4 Mbit/s.. Thus, if you manually set the upstream bandwidth to 4 Mbit/s you will prevent the connection from overloading. Little packet loss and little latency. Setting it higher will increase the chance of overloading the line.
The main problem is that the router has no way to know what bandwidth is really available at any given time. All it can do is to guess from what it saw before.

  • Wireless QoS Profiles

Is anyone running Wireless QoS using 5508's? I have been reading lots of info, but still struggle with some of this. I have not dealt with QoS much on a wired network and never on a wireless network. I know there has to be a shared comfiguration between both. The whole point of QoS is end to end. When looking into the Wireless QoS profiles in the WLC, the Gold profile, which is stated for video doesnt even have any values configured? So even selecting this profile for the WLAN SSID, the values not being configured, tell me its not benifitting me at all.
Now can someone give me "slimmed" down info on ToS, CoS, and DSCP?
Another question I have is does my application need these values configured? In my video encoder there is an area for ToS and the value is 0, do I need to configure this for the traffic to be noticed on the network?

    Steven
There is a lot to QOS on the network. There are three main points to keep in mind when working on QOS.
COS = Layer 2 packet markings
DSCP = Layer 3 packet markings
    1. Marking
    2. Trusting
    3. Queuing
I suggest doing the research on what's important to your business and marking the more important traffic higher then the not so important traffic. If you are using Cisco Switches, I suggest using 4 classes because you only get 4 queues with most Cisco switches.
You need to trust DSCP for your Controller based AP's.  You should trust DSCP on all of your switch uplinks.
Egress Queuing is very important. You need to allocate bandwidth to the queues on your ports. This assures that each queue gets the bandwidth that you want it to have.
Wireless QOS is a bit different. The client needs to set the DSCP value, then the controller needs to allow the DSCP value to be set to a specific level. You need to set the "platinum" profile to a 802.1p Tag to 6, this will allow packets to be marked with a COS value of 5 (I don't understand why Cisco did it this way, but it's how it is).  Then you need to apply Platinum to your voice vlan.
Here is a link to my forum where I have posted a lot more regarding QOS. I hope this helps.

  • 5508 wlc with 1140 APs and NPS cant connect

Hi.. let me go off with the equipment setup that I have first..
    I have 3 sites each site has  2x 5508 WLC and a few 1140 AP's per site.
I also have 3 NPS running on those 3 sites..
I have NPS and dhcp running on the same server...
I have a seperate CA root Authority server.
3 seperate DC ... one per site..
I followed everything accoriding to  this guide
    http://araihan.wordpress.com/2010/04/30/complete-guide-to-build-a-cisco-wireless-infrastructure-using-cisco-wlc-5500-cisco-1142-ap-and-microsoft-radius-server/
and also the guide that is on the CISCO site

hello everyone.. thanks for the reply... I changed a few things around..  instead of having 3 NPS server.. I disabled 2 of them and only using 1 for now.. I am trying to keep everything simple and geting working first..  after doing this.. looks like the message from event view is success   I got 2 events int he log..   1. Network policy server granded access to a user.   2.Network Policy server granted full acess to a user because of the host met the defined health policy.
    both sucess...
I am not getting a DHCP address... for some reason ... here is the log... from the debug.. hopefully someone can help me figure this out..  Thanks again for helping and posting your comments.

  • 5508 WLC-6500 Series Switch Etherchannel

    Hi,
I have a 5508 controller connected to a 6500 VSS pair. Below is the port channel configuration and port configuration.  I am just wondering whether we still have to configure a load balancing method as cisco recommends “port-channel load-balance src-dst-ip” as best practice.
Does this still applicable for 5508 controller-6500 Series uplink  as the etherchannel is L2 etherchannel?

  • QoS roles on WLC, Per user or per conection?

    Hi guys.
This morning I`m talking with my colleages about QoS roles on WLC and their behaviour, then a question has arisen me, because I know when I apply a QoS role or QoS profile it is a per-user role. Ok said my colleage, but What is the behaviour when several devices are using the same user with a QoS role applied?
Good question, I always assumed that this QoS role applies to every different connection managing it like a new user connection, that is, every new connection with the same user (if the QoS role is, for example, 256k for this user) will have a bandwitdh of 256k, but now I'm not sure if the WLC manages every connection at this way or divide the bandwitdh defined for that used into as many parts as connection have with this user ( for ten connections, for example, 25,6k).
Anyone can tell me how is the behaviour of the WLC in this scenario???
    Thanks in advanced.
    Best Regards.

    My2c.
If you apply the values on QoS profile instead of User profile then it is applicable to users connected to that WLAN mapped QoS profile. This way total no. of users will divide the available bandwidth. However, user with p2p application might consume all available bandwidth.

  • AIR-CAP3702I booting up in mesh mode and not joining our 5508 WLC

I have a batch of 30+ AIR-CAP3702I-A-K9 APs that I need to setup but none of them are joining to the 5508 WLC and when I connect a console cable and view the output from the AP it shows that it is trying to initiate in mesh mode. I have read other forums that are showing that I need to put in the APs MAC address to a filter list on the WLC for it to show up and then I will be able to change it from mesh mode to local mode. The only issue I'm having with that solution is not knowing how it will affect my current production environment off of that 5508 WLC. I have 69 active production APs with clients working off them and there are no MAC filters currently in place on the WLC. By adding a MAC filter entry for the new APs would the WLC create an implicit deny for all other clients that don't have their MAC addresses entered?? If so is there another work around? Can the mode be changed via the CLI on the AP itself to make it local instead of mesh?

  • Switchport QoS configuration for WLC

    Hi guys,
I am having a question about switchport QoS configuration for WLC. In the "enterprise mobility deployment guide 4.1", it says we can use both either "mls qos trust cos" or "mls qos trust dscp", depending on the mapping, however looking through Jerome's video tutorial on QoS in youtube, he actually mentioned that we need to keep this value as "mls qos trust cos", and I have also read from somewhere else that since controllers are layer 2 device, we do need to use "mls qos trust cos" on the switchport directly connected to the WLC.
however I did see some configurations using "mls qos trust dscp" on the switchport, which is for 5508 WLC due to some hardware design in the 5508 WLC. so I just want to ask what is the differnece between these two commands when we use them for switchports connected to WLC, and does this command really specific for what controller platform we use or it only depends on code version?
thank you very much for your time and help.

    Hi George,
Thanks for your reply, however I am still a bit confused on the difference between the two commands...
so in the deployment guide it does say we can do either one on the switchports connected to the WLC, so when should we use trust dscp instead of cos?
it sort of make sense when we talk about WLC is a layer 2 device hence we should use cos, but we also have packets marked with dscp values and I think the controller will keep the value without any modification, then that means we can also use trust dscp in order for this mapping to be done correctly, is this correct?
I did see some other people saying that when using turst dscp and did a packet capture, the values cannot be mapped correctly, but there are also cases that this works. expecially with 5508 series controllers, does it really have some hardware features that doing different things than the 4404s and the 2100 series?
but still, in what situation should we trust dscp on switchports connecting to WLC and when should we use trust cos as a best practice? or we should just forget about trust dscp for switchport connecting to WLC?
    Thanks.

  • Platinum QoS profile limits data traffic

    Hello,
I have WLC which controls a WLAN that hosts data traffic and VoIP traffic.
I have enabled Platinum QoS profile and the throughput of the WLAN decreases to approximately 10 Mbps (With bronze QoS profile throughput was like 22~25 Mbps).
I would like to know how does the QoS profile limit the throughput of the WLAN? WLC gives a warning that data traffic will be affected but that doesn't tell much about the actual mechanism of traffic limiting.
I used iperf software sending UDP data @ 500 Mbps to measure the throughput.

  • Apply QoS profile using RADIUS attributes

    Hi all,
Anyone delved into the use of RADIUS attributes to apply QoS values (DSCP/802.1p) to wireless users via a WLC?
With the emergence of ISE and the concept of a shared SSID for several user types I may want to apply QoS profiles by user rather than SSID.
Do you need to apply the maximum value to the SSID for the attribute-derived value to work?
Can non-WMM client traffic be marked using this approach?
    Plenty to think about here...
    Any discussion welcome!
    Cheers
    Rob

Yo can apply QoS RADIUS override.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6307/products_tech_note09186a0080870334.shtml
Yes it would be best to apply the wlan max qos value to the level that you intend to use with the radius override. for example if you want to apply platinum qos for voice clients on the ssid, i would map the wlan to platinum qos.
i am not sure on the next question. I think u can assign a DSCP/802.1p to a non WMM clients but I dont think the non wmm clients will benefit from it as they will not tag their traffic and hence the AP and subsequently the wired network will treat it as best effort (untagged).
    Thanks,

  • Can't put two 5508 WLCs in the same RF group

    Hi experts,
I have two 5508 WLCs and I want them to be backup to each other. I put in the same "RF Group Name" and even the same "Default Mobility Domain Name" however under Wireless -> 802.11b/g/n -> RRM -> RF Grouping each controller still only have themselves as the only memter to the group.
Two controllers are having management IPs on the same subnet 192.168.161.x/24. AP-manager interfaces are in the same network as well. They can ping each other fine. The following screen shots show the current relavent config on the controller:
I do have two controllers in the same mobility group and they are both showing up...
Does anyone know why they can't add each other to the RF group? All other settings are pretty much default...
    Thanks!

    Hi,
is there a chance that one of the 2 WLC doesn't contain any access point ? Or that the APs from one WLC are not physically close to the APs of the second WLC ?
The point of RF grouping is to exchange RF information, to make RRM decisions together and to know what ap is a rogue and which is not. RF group information travels over the air from AP to AP.
So if a wlc has no ap of if its APs are not close to those of the other WLC there is both no point in grouping with the other WLC in rf group and also no technical way of doing so.
    Regards,
    Nicolas

  • Can't get 1532i to associate to 5508 WLC running 7.6.130.0

    Greetings,
I've got 20 or so APs on a 5508 WLC.  Most of the APs are 1242, one is 3602.  I'm now trying to get a 1532i to associate to the 5508 and it's not happening.  This is the first 1532 on this controller.
Also, I got this 1532 AP from a sister site and they had it configured as Autonomous in wgb mode, so I had to do the Autonomous to Unified Conversion.  This conversion appeared to go successfully.  But now the AP won't associate to my controller.
    Thanks

  • Clients unable to connect and get DHCP - LAP1142N AP and 5508 WLC

    Hi,
I have 19 locations, each with 1 or more LAP1142N AP's in FlexConnect mode, AP's are primed using CAPWAP to my 5508 WLC at the datacenter. The AP's join the WLC without issue every time. I have two WLAN's, one guest and one staff, the guest network is open and obtains DHCP from a WatchGuard XTM33 firewall at each of the remote locations. The staff side is WPA2/RADIUS and DHCP is assigned from the WLC. Each AP is assigned a static IP that is not in the DHCP scope. For example: DHCP scope on the branch firewall is 192.168.1.10-250 the AP will be assigned static IP of 192.168.1.1.. The AP's are connected to a HP procurve switch that has a untagged VLAN, the firewall is using the native vlan 1 and so is the AP.
I have been running this network for over a year and it has not had a single issue until the last two weeks. Nothing on the network has changed or has been upgraded.
Now for the issue: The issue I am seeing is that clients are no longer able to connect to the AP and do not get DHCP assigned to them. I am able to get it working, if I remove the static IP from the AP, the AP will reboot, join the controller, then begin working, users can connect and DHCP is assigned from the firewall as it should. However, If the AP then reboots, the AP will join back to the controller but no clients can connect nor do they get a DHCP address. So, I then reassign a static IP to the AP again and it reboots, connects to the controller and clients then can connect and get DHCP.
Attached is a running config from one of the APs
I've found several posts on this topic, in fact the patch of unassigning or reassigning static IP is one that I found. However, I wanted to post this to see if there is any further assistance I can get on this. I am also waiting on my SmartNet to start up and will be contacting Cisco support as well.
    Thanks for any help.

Alright, so I finally figured out the issue with this. I had a Mobility Anchor set on the guest WLAN and once I removed that all started working again.
    What is Mobility Anchor?
    A. Mobility Anchor, also referred to as Guest tunneling or Auto Anchor Mobility, is a feature where all the client traffic that belongs to a WLAN (Specially Guest WLAN) is tunneled to a predefined WLC or set of controllers that are configured as Anchor for that specific WLAN. This feature helps to restrict clients to a specific subnet and have more control over the user traffic. Refer to the Configuring Auto-Anchor Mobility section of Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration Guide, Release 7.0 for more information on this feature.

  • P2P multicast and upstream bandwidth

    Hi,
I'm in the process of developing a realtime video chat application where multiple users can send video streams simultanuously. The number of users receiving the streams can be very big, e.g. 10 broadcasters and 500 receivers, each receiver should get all streams.
I use RTMFP connections to an FMS and streams are published in P2P multicast groups by passing the groupspec to the NetStream constructor. Currently I'm having problems with audio/video synchronization and video stream 'jumps' (not continuous). From what I read on other threads, this is related to the fact that there is not enough upstream bandwidth for sending the streams. So my questions are:
How to calculate the required upstream bandwidth on every peer for the given example of 10 broadcasters and 500 receivers (is it 10*bandwidth of one stream)?
What settings (on NetStream, Camera, Microphone etc.) should be used for best results and how to adapt them based on the number of broadcasters?
I hope my questions make sense!
    Thanks,
    Haykel

I have done some tests to find out how much upstream bandwidth is used for different situations. The data is taken from the 'multicastInfo' property of all involved 'NetStream' objects as follows:
Multicast Data: average of 'multicastInfo.sendDataBytesPerSecond' of all streams.
Multicast Control : average of 'multicastInfo.sendControlBytesPerSecond' of all streams.
Different measurements have been done for different situations:
The user is broadcasting and not broadcasting
    Varying number of connected users
    Varying number of users broadcasting
I have limited the maximum video bandwidth to 16 KBytes with 'Camera.setQuality(1024 * 16, 0)'.
The application uses only application level multicast (passing a groupspec to the NetStream constructor). In this test all peers are on the same LAN and the FMS server is on a remote machine.
The results in Bytes/s (click to enlarge):
What I have noticed is that the outgoing multicast data volume grows by ~15 KByte with every new connected user (receiver) and goes down when the number of broadcasters grows. Is that normal? Does it mean that only the broadcasters are sharing the streams with the other peers? I thought that every peer would share the data with a number of neighbours (i.e. 3) which would share with their neighbours and so on.
During the tests I have also checked for a/v delays and noticed the following:
For every new stream, at the beginning audio and video are in sync but have a delay of ~3 seconds
After ~20 seconds the video delay becomes marginal but the audio remains delayed and so goes out of sync with video
After ~30 seconds the audio delay becomes marginal and goes in sync with video (a/v are now stable)
The delays of 20 and 30 seconds grow up to more than a minute when the number of broadcasters grows
    My questions:
    Are my measurements correct?
Why is the outgoing multicast data volume growing with every new receiver? Is the publishing stream sending the data to all peers?
Should I expect the bandwidth to grow indefinitly with the number of receivers or will it stabilize at some value?
How to decrease the time required for a/v to become stable (in-sync with a small delay)?
Is P2P multicast a good choice for this kind of applications (up to 10 broadcasters and a very big number of receivers)?
    Any advices???
    Thanks.
