URGENT! 450 HOST DOWN
Hi,
A quick overview...
NW 6.5 SP7, GW 7.0.2 server from our Indian office has been physically
shipped back to our UK head office.
I need to bring this server back online asap...
I've done all the necessary config on our CISCO firewall, and I've changed
the DNS settings on the Netware box to look at the UK ISP DNS servers. It
can ping and resolve a hostname, so DNS must be fine?
We relay via Messagelabs, but GWIA reports 450 HOST DOWN on all outbound
email.
I tried removing the relay, so we try sending direct, and get 450 HOST DOWN.
I downloaded TEL.NLM and try "load tel MESSAGELABS_HOSTNAME 25" and get
malformed address? Yet if I try with the IP addess - "load tel IP_ADDRESS
25" - it works.
I guess it's a DNS issue but why, if PING works and resolves addresses???
Really appreciate your responses, I'm under pressure to get back online
asap...
Regards
Alan
FAO Anybody who comes across this post...
I spent a long time trying to resolve this, DNS was working as PINGs to
hostnames were being resolved to IP's and vice versa.
I ran out of ideas, so rebooted the server... And this worked.
Annoying, as I assumed INETCFG changes after "reinitialise system" worked,
and PING was clearly using the new changes? Well, I don't know what exactly
took effect after the reboot, but it worked. Shame I never tried this after
the first 10 minutes - DOH!
Cheers,
Alan

Windows 2008r2 and 450 Host down
We are running GW 8.0.2 on a Windows 2008r22 cluster. The server sits in the DMZ. A rule here as that no servers in the DMZ are allowed to be part of the main Windows domain of the company. Since clustering requires a domain controller we had to install our GWIA into its own Windows domain. My question is how will the following tid affect the server if we change the primay suffix of this computer as recommended by the tid.
"450 Host Down" errors GWIA on Windows 2008
This document (7005218) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.
Environment
Microsoft Windows Server 2008
Novell GroupWise 8
Novell GroupWise 8 Internet Agent
Situation
When sending an outbound email with GWIA running on Windows 2008 Server, GWIA does not resolve DNS correctly and immediately shows a "450 Host Down" error (for the domain name of the recipient) when trying to send the message.
In Diag log mode, GWIA also shows a "No MX records found" error for each outbound message.
Resolution
Right-click My Computer
Go To Properties
Click on Change settings > Change
Go to the More tab then put the email domain name (such as "novell.com") in the "Primary DNS suffix of this computer" box.

Other than making it work? It won't have any adverse affect at all - just put
your normal company's internet domain in there.

We keep getting 450 host down for owensville.k12.mo.us, which is our domain. Every now and then an email will be sent out, but it doesn't go through until 3-4 hours after it was initially sent. It has worked fine for years. The only thing that was recently done was that all users were removed except for two or three that still needed to send encrypted emails out to banks. I'm assuming that these issues started when that was done. I've recently been handed the responsibility of fixing this even though I have almost zero Groupwise administration experience.
Other than I know our mail servers DNS name is mail.owensville.k12.mo.us I really don't know much else. Where do I begin looking?Well the emails never made it out. Here's what the GWIA log shows for the outbound email I sent. It's not even connecting to the IP for the external domain and ends up sending back to itself. DNS seems to be fine as I can resolve all MX and A records that came up on mxtoolbox for google mail and hotmail from the Groupwise server. The 192.168.0.47 ip is the ip for the NIC on the Groupwise server. All of the Groupwise features are hosted on this one box.

I have successfully migrated GW8 (domain, po, gwia, webaccess) from a NW65 box to SLES10sp2 VM running on XenServer 6.2. All users can access their mailboxes thru GW clients on the PC workstations or WebAccess. The system can also receive mail from the Internet... but is unable to send mail.
DNS on the network is running properly and I can nslookup with the DNS within the network from the VM running GW8.
I am checking the GWIA object using ConsoleOne on the VM, but the GroupWise tab is missing from the Properties screen. I've checked TIDs but doesn't seem to help the problem.
Any clue? Below is the error alert in my mail box when I was testing outbound mail.

Check the gwia.cfg. A setting there will override your C1 settings.

450 host down to only one domain
GW7.0.4 on SLES10 patch level 3--email to one domain
(nationwideplanning.com) results in a 450 host down result. No complaints
with any other recipients. An nslookup from the GW server results below, so
there is an answer. As a workaround, users are sending this recipient email
from their personal Gmail, AOL and AT&T accounts without fail. I am not
sure where to look for a cause of this failure and appreciate any thoughts
or clues. I have a ticket open with Verizon our ISP and verified out
reverse pointer record is OK, but they have not been very helpful.
Thanks.

also, the A record in the GWIA config is just our domain name, but our

problem for few and random recipients? -
GWIA running on SLES - 450 Host Down sending
Hi All,
We are running GWIA on our SLES10 server.
On inspecting logs we see that almost every email sent to external email address the GWIA reports the following, 450 Host Down:
09:08:44 144 MSG 632 Detected error on SMTP command
09:08:44 144 MSG 632 Command: medartis.com
09:08:44 144 MSG 632 Response: 450 Host down (medartis.com)
09:08:47 640 Accepted IMAP4 connection with: ::ffff:192.168.0.17
09:08:48 640 Accepted IMAP4 connection with: ::ffff:192.168.0.17
09:08:49 640 IMAP4 session ended: ::ffff:192.168.0.17
09:08:49 872 IMAP4 session ended: ::ffff:192.168.0.17
09:09:14 144 Queuing deferred message: /opt/novell/groupwise/internet/wpgate/gwia/send/sd9c2837.056
Now on every ocassion the emails eventually get delivered.
Now to rule out DNS or port 25 issues I PuTTY to pur GWIA SLES server, telnet to an external mailserver that is reported as Host Down and it connects and responds immediately.
How do I troubleshoot and rectify this as I am at a loss to what else to check what is the cause?
Thanks,
DavidBob,
IPv6 disabled, restarted SLES, started GWIA and same issue. So not IPv6 unfortuantley.
Already Verbose but I will turn on debugging mode and capture what I see and post.
If I go teh Wireshark direction might need some help capturing exactly what is required.
Thanks,
David

You can enable the verbose or diagnostic logging on the GWIA. This will show you vastly more detail. You can set this via NCO or via the GWIA's HTTP console.
Also this is SLES... so you can get wireshark and get packet captures from the server and see exactly what is happening from the GWIA via telnet to the external SMTP server.
But I'm betting its IPv6.

GWIA transfering mail to an outside mail server : mail.outside.com
Logs show 450 Host down.
I can ping mail.outside.com, and read a lot of posts.
I have tried :
Different DNS server, does not work and should not be neccessary as I can ping outside host.
Shutting down the firewall completely ; does not work
No virus software installed yet.
I have checked, but I have no route.cfg file ( never had )
I also read something about "reverse dns" but do not know what to do with that in GWIA setup.
Any ideas ?
StephanRight ; more info, sorry for this.
OES11 server, with groupwise.
Problem started after installing webaccess on the same server.
This messed up all things, imanager is unreachable and above error in groupwise gwia.
Webaccess could be reached, and was working.
So I started to delete the webaccess stuff manually, to try and get things working again.
Tried deleting the gwia and reinstalling.
But it seems webaccess messed up something with the routing as well.
So :
Traceroute is not working, imanager is not working.
Oh and this might me a lead :
In gwia, "Hostname A Dns record" I can change to dnsname.isp.com
But in the webconsole it changes everytime to servername.dnsname.isp.com
Could webaccess have messed up something to cause this ?
And how can I try to fix this ? -
450 Host Down message/between domains
Using Groupwise 6.5 and Novell 6, we can not successfully send email to a
specific domain OUTSIDE of our company. We get the following messages in
the GWIA log:
Detected error on SMTP command
Command : (the intended recipient)
Response: 450 Host Down (the intended recipient)
Deferring message
The recipient's ISP claims to have never received any message. We can
successfully email this recipient using a different email client.
Any ideas?

This is really a question best posed on the support forums. These forums
are intended for peer support for software developers. However, since
you can provoke the behaviour at will could you use a number of
techniques to investigate it. Given the description I'd guess at DNS
problems first. Start with NSLookup (preferably on your host that does
the SMTP forwarding). Then use the following commands:
SET TYPE=MX
foreign.domain
Replace foreign.domain with the domain name you can't send to, e.g.:
SET TYPE=MX
novell.com
You should see the mail exchanger (MX) record for the domain and the
address (A) record for the mail exchanger. Then switch to a public
server that is external to your own domain/network:
SERVER 137.65.1.1
SET TYPE=MX
foreign.domain
137.65.1.1 is Novell's public DNS server and it will do recursive
lookups for external queries. If the result of the second set of
commands is different from the first then the probable cause is DNS
mis-configuration on your mail forwarder. It could be that it has the
wrong DNS IP or that the DNS server it is using has a stale MX or A
record for the problem domain.
If that doesn't work you could try Ethereal or another packet capture
application to capture frames that target the foreign domain's MX IP
address and simply send it an e-mail. You should capture the SMTP
exchange and the cause might be obvious. Note that you will have to run
the capture program on your mail forwarder or use a hub or configure a
switch port to echo your mail forwarder's switch port. -
450 host down to some domains.
We could not send mails to some domains, the message is 450 host down. When I try to do dnsstuff check on those domains, this is what I get, is this really normal.
Your 1 MX record is:

It seems they have one mx record with changing IP addresses. Is this something new for security ?
Then my smtp cannot figure which IP address to use. And I cannot event telnet port 25 on those servers or even ping.
But they claim they can get e-mails from every where apart from my host. I tested and sent and e-mail from yahoo and it was delivered.

450 host down on GWIA not always correct it seems
Folks, every once in a while we get a 450 host down to a specific domain. I
telnet that mail server and it does appear "down", does not respond on port
25.
However: They receiving domain insists they are not down and are receiving
messages from other domains and in fact test as we are on the phone and what
do you know they are receiving. So I run a test from mxtoolbox.com, and
somehow, even though my telnets fail and our gwia 7.0.3 fails as well,
mxtoolbox.com does not fail. The results from mxtoolbox.com are posted
below.
What is the deal? Why does telnet and GWIA both fail but not other mail
gateways. Is there something lacking in the GWIA technology?

Sure
a) transient issues in general.
b) broken "protections" that are blocking you as a suspected mailbomber.
These would block your ip address for a while and then stop. They
wouldn't block mxtoolkit -
450 Host Down for one Domain after they've moved IPs
Has anyone else seen this?
Where a domain you're system sends mail to regularly suddenly comes up
with all 450.
Check if they've changed their MX or matching A records. I just
encountered an issue where the DNS change had propagated just fine. I
could do NSLookups on the host server to get the correct/new entries,
but GWIA didn't want to see it until after a restart.
This GWIA (8.02hp2 on SLES10sp3 -64bit) had gone more than 10 times the
TTL without refreshing for a connection it.

Both. The original ones had timed out and failed

The new and correct entries
I checked the A record first, then the MX (remembering exact 'set type'
syntax before coffee made it second choice ;) Only the A record was
changed.
incorrect entry had been put in at some point before a power
outage(Wednesday night, complete with generator failure). After power
outage, everything came up with that bad entry. Discovery the bad entry
in the morning (Thursday) and get it fixed. Default TTL of 8 hours was
used for all MX related records. Leave client stating this mail flow (to
domain.net) should start working overnight, but they don't get back to me
until Monday morning when this problem is still happening. As this
system is set for a 4 day limit on attempts, we were clearly into new
messages as the original burst had timed out with transfer failed
statuses.

Dear Forum people,
Again I come for help.
After working for months, the 450 host down error has returned.
I have down nothing to trigger it, and this is honest, i was not even in the office.
So I have done some digging and I am reading 2 things : DNS and route.cfg
First I will descripe my setup
Groupwise 8 on OES 11
The box is NATted, so internal adress 192.168.1.7
Router is 192.168.1.1
External dns : user.ispname.com
External smtp : mail.ispname.com
Solution 1 DNS
I have placed the DNS server adresses of my ISP in both the router as the Groupwise box
This seems to work ok. I can telnet to mail.ispname.com on port 25
Solution 2 route.cfg
I have created the file and placed in it my external ip and ip of server
user.ispname.com [192.168.1.7]
( is the ip adress supposed to be in brackets ? )
Still I keep the 450 Host down error and mail will not send.
Any ideas ?On 04.10.2012 11:06, stelgenkamp wrote:

Not under your control. Ask 213.75.63.13 (or better, it's admin). ;)

We are running GroupWise 7.0.2. All mail seems to be going in and out just fine, but we receive hundreds of the following messages every day.
MSG ##### Detected error on SMTP command
MSG ##### Command: sacog.org
MSG ##### Response: 450 Host down (sacog.org)
DMN: MSG ##### Send Failure: 450 Host down (sacog.org)
The domain, sacog.org, is our domain.
Has anyone seen this before and know how to fix it?
thanks,
davidHi Massimo,
Y: is just the drive letter I have mapped to our GW system. I should have replaced it with VOL1.
Thanks for the update. I was about to post a follow up to my previous message. When I first made the change, I still saw several of the messages scroll by, but I've noticed that there are fewer and fewer of them as time goes on. I was wondering if it had to due with old messages.
Thanks again for all your help. These error messages have been on the back of my mind for several years. I've tried Google searches several times, but could never find an answer.
The messages that were causing these errors in GWIA, are they all return notifications of undeliverable e-mails that are coming back, but have been undeliverable to in-house users? Should they start seeing e-mails telling them if a message was undeliverable now?
thanks,
david

That's normal for old messages still sitting in the queue, the change
will not apply to them. But new messages shouldn't produce it any more,
and it will gradually go away when the old defered messages expire. YOu
can check them in the .\defer directory of your GWIA.

What is the correct way to temporarily disable notifications for host down? I have about 10 different
"environments" set up in the domain at this point. During the initial installation I created the domain
and discovered all my clients via ip. Each subnet cloud(upon detection, a host would appear underneath a
cloud pic for each subnet) represents the environment and each server has two parents...the subnet it
belongs to and the parent domain.(This isnt exactly true..simplified for explanation). Anyway, the email
addresses for notification to the respective admin groups are configured in each subnet cloud and each
host is setup for group based actions(the 4 checkboxes for host/agent up/down). I didnt setup anything at
the domain level since I need different email addresses for each subnet cloud. If I need to take a host
down I uncheck those 4 boxes wait a few minutes and usually I do not receive notification...it works. The
problem is sometimes I still receive notification from the master server. I was initially under the
impression this was due to polling gaps from the master to each client(~100 clients or so), but now I'm
not so sure. In 3.5x I modified the polling times but I haven't changed that yet since the move to 3.6.
I also sometimes receive notification from the master server about what seems to be the subnet cloud
object itself for some reason which allegedly is a non monitored object. I'm still baffled by that one.
Regardless, I have not seen another installation of this product or even the console so I'm sort of flying
blind here except for what documentation I have found on Halcyon's and Suns website.(there were a couple
of screenshots, but very few that I have been able to find)What is the correct way to temporarily disable
notifications for host down?Out-of-the box the documented way is what you're doing - uncheck the notifications for the individual hosts or the folders they are in.
If you're looking for something a little easier to maintain for that volume of systems, try EventAction free unrestricted for 30 days:
http://www.halcyoninc.com/products/EventAction/index.php
To disable notification you can just add a "-(hostname/IP)" flag to your overall email rule, or you can define 10 email actions for hosts in your 10 different folders and enable/disable each group with a single point-and-click.
Sample parameters you can create rules for can be seen here: http://www.halcyoninc.com/products/EventAction/help/HALEventAction-adding-h.html#HALEventAction-adding-filters
