[URGENT] 64bit Mode Question

Hello. I recently bought a 13'' Macbook (early 2008 model), and it had Leopard (10.5) installed before buying, and I told them to upgrade to Snow Leopard. They upgraded it, and now I have Snow Leopard.
But today, one my friend pointed me that it is better to have 64 bit mode and he
told me steps to enable it.
I have Core 2 Duo processor, and my model is actually supporting 64 bit.
This far I tried this:
1. Boot while holding 6 and 4. - Doesn't work
2. Adding flag using NVRAM (arch=x86_64). - Doesn't work
3. Adding flag to boot.plist using a text editor (arch=x86_64) - Doesn't Work
4. Adding flag to boot.plist using a text editor (-x64) - Doesn't work
I also tried to do a Fresh Install, but because the Snow Leo DVD I have doesn't work, and decided to ask you for help. (BTW, my SuperDrive is working correctly with other bootable DVDs, it seems that the Snow Leo DVD I have is damaged)
So, please help me.
Again, my model number is: MB403LL/A

it's not better. and you mac does not support booting into 64-bit kernel.
even if it did support it you'd get no benefit from booting into 64-bit kernel as your macbook can have max of 4GB RAM only. there is no reason to run it in 64-bit kernel mode. it runs 64-bit apps in 32-bit kernel mode just fine.
there is nothing wrong with your computer.

  • [AthlonFX] K8T Master & Fx51 - 128bit vs 64bit Mode

Hey guys I posted here ages ago when i first got my fx51 and mobo combo and had some issues, while most of them I got sorted one of them has plagued me for over a year and is really pooting me...
Basically i get random bsod all the time, i might go a day or 2 without one, or get 3 at once, and i also get a lot of random crashes in games and programs, and me being a programmer i get this quite a bit which makes things difficult  .
Now when i first got my board i tried to run it with chip kill ecc but that would cause windows to not load and was advised (from here) to not use it  . From the get go i have had 2 registered 512mb ddr400 kingston ram chips which i always thought were a bit dodgy and the cause of my problems however after today i found its not them at all.
I downloaded memtest and ms' mem diag tool and both concluded i have memory errors but couldnt isolate which dimm, so i played around and found whenever i have my dimms setup for 128bit mode (slot 1&2 or 3&4) i get a stack of errors, however testing each stick individually and in slots 1&3 together i run fine, i run so fine that i can load windows with ecc on and have not had 1 error at all  .
My question would be, does anyone else suffer from this, ever heard of this or know how to fix it, this is actually my 2nd board from msi due to the first one having a defective southbridge so i dont think its the slots (2&4) but rather something with the way the 128bit mode operates. The worst thing about this is that i bought this machine when the fx first came out to be my ultimate gaming machine, and now one of the main reasons its so fast, i cannot use so its kinda bugging me, do i go for performance over stability? i guess if you play WoW you would know how bad it is crashing and having to relog in only to be met by a 5hr queue.
Anyone got any ideas or similar war stories, please share  .

    by ecc i mean chip-kill..
and I dont need it to run stable, what I was saying, was that when i had the ram setup for 128bit dual chan, if i had chip-kill on the OS would never load and i had to run with it off, now when i run in 64bit mode it runs totally fine.
Im using the exact same ram which individual both test fine using both memtest+ and ms' diag tool on this machine and my other one, originally i thought it was my ram which was faulty but its looking like its either the slots in the board, or the board's software, either way i havnt had a random crash yet, no bsod, no game drop outs, no windows rebooting for no reason.

  • 32bit vs 64bit - General Question

    Hello:
I have read a number of articles about Snow-Leopard being boot up in 32bit vs 64bit.
It's a big topic, so I would like to ask and receive (a response) in very general terms that will overlook many finer points.
My impression is (for now and the near future), I should leave my MacPro 2009 (16GB RAM) in 32bit when using FCS3.
Question: will I be missing out on any "must have" advantages.
(Computer and Software info listed below)
    Thank-you, MLR

No you won't miss anything by staying in 32bit. FCS3 is still 32bit.
No advantage will be gained for you by setting OSX to 64bit mode and you may cause some other problems.

  • Installing Firefox with windows 7 64bit mode just does not work.

I have windows 7 64bit mode. I cannot install firefox, it crashes all the time when I open it. I know the problem is because my windows 7 is in 64bit mode. Can you (firefox support) or someone on this forum provide the simple and easy steps of getting it to work. Also can you (firefox) hurry up and release a 64bit version. I'm using google chrome and crazy browser as they seem to have no problems at all. I really want to use firefox but it just won't set up for me because I'm running win7 64bit mode. If I was running win7 32bit mode I wouldn't be having any issues. Has anyone out there got a simple step by step solution for this? It it mind boggling that with todays technology no one has a simple fix for this issue. Help!!!!!

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.375.70 Safari/533.4

I have been running Win 7 64 bit on an HP Pavilion lap for several months. The whole browser thing has been a nightmare. My work involves heavy duty internet research. Firefox crashes every few minutes. There is no specific event I can find that kicks this off, but running the latest Flash Players and Adobe Reader makes it a lot worse. In fact, I had to set up the adobe reader to not run within the Firefox window. I had to back off to an old version of adobe Reader and Flash Player to accomplish this. I love Firefox. I was disappointed to have to uninstall it as it was impossible to run searches with it.
So then it proved to be that IE either version 8 or 9 was even worse. I could not keep it up long enough to run a search.
So I installed Chrome which has some nice features, but it also crashes, albeit more gracefully so I do not lose my place and it makes a quick recovery but there are many online applications where Chrome just does not work.
My son also has Win7 64 bit and says he is also having the same problems.
I want my Firefox back! Please fix it.

  • Why export audio to movie command not visible and detect cuts command is not working in 64bit mode?

Does anyone know why export to audio disappear from menu in 64bit mode?
Why detect cuts command is not working well in 64 bit mode?
I tested on several machines (brand-new iMac, brand-new MacPro with 10.8 OS, MacPro with 10.6.8),and everythig wotks in 32 bit mode. As I switch to 64 bit mode detect cuts only put one marker at the begening of film.
I also noticed that Firewire output option in 64bit mode is not avaible.
Is there a certain film format that I have to use to make it work? I tried DV PAL, but I had ther same result.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Booting into 64bit mode with Mac Pro 2009

I am trying to boot into 64bit mode with a 2009 Mac Pro 2.93 Quad core machine. I tried holding down 6 and 4 when restarting but no luck, it staill says no in the profiler. Any ideas why?

If you'd like your Mac to always start up in 64 bit mode without having to hold down any keys, do this:
Here's the configuration file approach for always booting into 64-bit. This is the best way to make your Mac always start up 64 bit as the only thing necessary is to alter one line of a configuration file. You can do that by opening the Terminal and entering:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' 'arch=x86_64'
To return to 32 bit mode, you would repeat the command but enter an empty string, which would just be the single quotes (where arch=x86_64 is) with nothing in between.
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot 'Kernel Flags' ''
These commands are all one line, they're just wrapping here.
If at any point you find you need to start up in 32 bit mode for a single use, just as you held down the 6 and 4 keys for 64 bit, you can hold down the 3 and 2 keys for a temporary change. No need to keep changing the config file over and over.

  • Compiling perl on Solaris x86 in 64bit mode with libperl.so

    Hello,
I am trying to compile perl 5.10.0 on solaris 10/x86 in 64bit mode, some basic infos are:
    System: SunOS oven 5.10 Generic_120012-14 i86pc i386 i86pc
Compiler: gcc version 3.4.3 (csl-sol210-3_4-branch+sol_rpath) which comes with SUNWgcc
To compile in 64bit I add the -m64 to linker and compiler flag.
I also point the Configure to appropriate 64bit library directories.
Static compilation without libperl.so build works like a charm, with libperl.so it compiles as well but execution of perl or miniperl results in:
ld.so.1: miniperl: fatal: relocation error: R_AMD64_PC32: file /export/home/keeper/build/perl-5.10.0/libperl.so: symbol main: value 0x2800117364c does not fit
Same happens with perl 5.8.8 btw.
I have tried to add / remove -fPIC flag, result is the same.
I am also 100% sure that the correct libperl.so is taken.
    Anyone had success in this?

Common general advice for crashes is to check your drivers and application to make sure they're fully up to date.  I see you do have the 12.0.3 Photoshop software.
Is your display driver up to date?  Visit the web site of the maker of your display adapter (video card) or laptop maker to see.  Photoshop does some probing to determine the OpenGL capabilities during startup, and an OpenGL bug in the display driver may be a problem.
I don't know what display adapter you have in your system, but if it's based on an Intel GPU the Intel display drivers aren't always the best for Photoshop.
One thing you can do to furhter help diagnose problems with the display driver (and assuming you can bring up Photoshop at all) is to go into Edit - Preferences - Performance and temporarily disable OpenGL by unchecking the [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing setting.  Photoshop will have to be shut down and restarted to test this.  There is also a registry tweak that can be done to prevent Photoshop from even trying to access OpenGL at all.

  • LR2 with OS 10.5 run in 32bit or 64bit mode

Just upgrading now. The readme file mentions you can run LR2 in 64bit mode. Is there any advantage if I have only 4GB RAM? Are there other advantages?

I am unable to print in 64bit mode to an i9900 using the latest Canon driver; at least, all the settings for Quality & Media, Color Options, etc. are crossed out and unavailable for adjustment. Switching to 32bit mode re-enables the settings and printing this way seems OK so far.

  • Apple External Modem FAX Does Not work in 64bit mode

Apple needs to update its Fax Driver to 64bit mode. Since upgrading to the i7 in 10.6.6, the system boots in 64bit mode which is great! Except i can't fax anymore from my MacBook. Research has shown that it only works in 32bit mode. I do not want to boot in 32 at this point. Anybody know of any other solutions, external fax modems or 64bit drivers or software that will work with the Apple External modem?

I am having similar issue.  I can't order a new McBook Pro until I know I can fax directly from it ... its essential for me.  I'm shocked no one as addressed your concern.  Is Apple so arrogant when it comes to their business customers that they abandon fax/telephony technology with out a fall back position or warning to users?
I got used to Microsoft arrogance; but I was hoping more user concern from Apple.

  • Mainstage always crashes before even start after I upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion. Doesn't matter if I use 32bit or 64bit mode. What to do? I bought Logic Studio 9 as a hard box at a retail store (including Logic Pro 9, Mainstage, Soundtrack Pro, Compresso

Mainstage always crashes after I upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion. Doesn't matter if I choose 32bit or 64bit mode. I sent all the error reports to Apple but no help from there. I heard rumours that Mountain Lion creates the problem. With Lion I had no problem. Logic Pro runs without issues. So what can I do now? Do I have to reinstall Logic Studio and then download all the updates again? Hopefully not.. Any advice? Thanks to all! Ben

    Try delete the mainstage preferences
    from USER/library/preferences   com.apple.mainstage.plist
even if you are running mainstage 2.1.3 and not 2.2.2  it should work with mountain lion

  • Do I need to boot into 64bit mode to take advantage of 64bit apps?

The DAW I use just announced 64bit support. My machine is an early 8-core that will not boot into 64bit mode. Is this even necessary though? Will I still be able to access RAM beyond the 4gb cap while booted into 32bit mode?
    Thanks!

2008 Mac Pro can, it is supported on server OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
Method 1: Startup key combination (for current startup only)
If your Mac uses the 32-bit kernel by default, but supports the 64-bit kernel, you can start up using the 64-bit kernel by holding the 6 and 4 keys during startup.
If your Mac uses the 64-bit kernel by default, you can start up with the 32-bit kernel by holding the 3 and 2 keys during startup.
Your Mac will revert to the default kernel the next time you reboot it.
    Method 2: On-disk setting (persistent)
To select the 64-bit kernel for the current startup disk, use the following command in Terminal:
    sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773
Early 2008 implemented Unified EFI which is 64-bit but you need to run 10.6.x and even then... so much for "64-bit" hardware and OS talk we heard for years.

Even if you cannot or do not boot the Mac OS X Snow Leopard kernel into 64-bit mode, you can run your 64-bit apps as 64-bit, and they can take advantage of all the memory in the machine. This was/is possible even with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The main problem being that there are only a handful of 64-bit applications available as of September 2009.

  • Why is CS6 slow, 64bit-mode or not?

Got the CS6 trial for OSX. Its not nearly as responsive as promised.
It can't handle average files with let say 30states in it.
Escpecially if you create symbols with a lot of elements(30+) which are nested and you want to edit those symbols, there is huge perfomance drop:
You can't use your keyboard for moving elements within those symbols. The programs give you no feedback what it is doing.
Then I checked the activity monitor: Apparently fireworks is not running in 64bit mode.
Is this just the trial version or is the Adobe-Add misleading that it should be running in 64bit?
    My comp-specs:
    lates iMac
    20GB Ram
    SSD

And why it has not been improved? Its so obvious slow!

Performance improvement in CS6 is made interms of refreshing the Property inspector on Mac platform.
On Windows platform file open /edit and save limit has been increased for 64 bit machines.
Adobe Fireworks CS6 is a 32-bit application only. Also performance interms of rendering on canvas or preview is not changed in CS6.

  • 8GB memory . Should use 64bit mode?

    Hello all
    2010 MBP 13" 8GB memory
question: With 8GB memory, should I be booting into 64-bit mode for Snow Leopard?
I am a heavy user of VMware Fusion so I'm not sure how Snow Leopard in 32-bit mode handles memory especially with 8GB.

*64-bit kernels and After Effects CS5*
By Todd Kopriva on March 25, 2010 1:21 PM
    +Here's the one-sentence summary of this post:+
You don't need to run the 64-bit kernel on Mac OS X to run 64-bit applications (like After Effects CS5).
+Now that I've written that sentence, I can spend the rest of this post elaborating on it. But, really, you can stop reading now.+
The 32-bit Mac OS kernel can run 64-bit applications, and it can manage ~32GB of RAM. With any current computer, there is no disadvantage to running the 32-bit kernel. Running the 32-bit kernel will not change which applications you can run, and it will not change how much address space your 64-bit applications can have.
The design of Mac OS separated the kernel address space from the client (application) address space, which is why Apple can fully support running a 64-bit program on a 32-bit kernel. On Leopard, this is the only option; and it's the default on Snow Leopard.
+This article explains the distinction between a 64-bit kernel and 64-bit user processes (applications) pretty well. This article is pretty good, too.+ (see links below)
