URGENT: advice needed re Oracle SOA Stack

Astonished and perplex was I when I came across the following, a metaphor with Windows/Word is used here for a quick and better understanding.
Picture us at the beginning of this millennium, the following translation is used in this picture:
Oracle - Microsoft
Application Server - Windows
OC4J - DOS kernel
WLS - NT kernel
SOA Suite - Word
AIA - Spell checker
PIP - Grammar checker
We want to buy a word-processor and we are looking which version of Word we should use in our company. Microsoft says in a statement of direction that new versions of Windows will be based on the NT-kernel, the DOS-kernel is considered End-of-Life. The latest Word versions available are 10.1.3.5 for windows 98 (DOS kernel) and 10.1.3.5.1 for windows 2000 (NT kernel). Here we choose windows 2000 as the platform with the supported Word 10.1.3.5.1, in order to follow the same direction as Microsoft states. So far so good.
But now we would now like to buy the spell checker available for Word, Microsoft supports the spell checker for Word versions on Windows 98 and NT4 (all though NT4 only with spell checker, not the grammar checker), but it appears there is no supported spell checker for Word on Windows 2000 available!
Furthermore Microsoft tells us it will not support a spell checker for the supported Word on Windows 2000, only the new version of Word coming later this year for Windows XP will have a supported spell checker. But that's not all, even it appears there will be no spell checker supported for the (last planned) release 10.1.3.5 of Word for Windows 98, only for the older Word version 10.1.3.4 (patch 8 or higher) for Windows 98.
So in conclusion if we want to increase the quality of our work by using the AIA on top of the SOA Suite, we have to un-install SOA Suite 10.1.3.5.1 with Oracle Application Server 10.3 (WebLogic Server 10.3.1) and install the End-of-Life Oracle Application Server 10.3 (OC4J) with an older version of the SOA Suite (10.1.3.4 with patch 8 or higher).
We can not wait for the AIA & PIP's for SOA Suite 11 to be released end of 2010 because we need our SOA environment ready asap (yesterday).
This is the story I heard, now the question to you is how to advice this fellow to move on, what are the options and alternatives if there are any???
Thanx in advance,
Cheers,
John

Hi John,
I can totally picture your perplex since we are also in similar situation. The answer to your question really depends on what your immediate needs are. Is it spell checker or the grammar checker you need yesterday?
If you need spell checker then I think it's better to wait for few more months (Feb-Mar) and go with latest spell checker (AIA 3.0) on Windows XP/Vista/7 (WLS 10.3.2)
Or if you really need grammar checker now for your business needs then you have no choice to go with grammar checker (2.4/2.5) on DOS (OC4J) then look to upgrade to grammar checker 3.0 on Windows XP/Vista/7 later this year or next year. DOS or NT should not be a big deal with this option as you need to do some kind of upgrade to 3.0 grammar checker in future anyway.
Those are my 2 cents

  • Urgent Advice Needed Re Slow BB Speeds & Intermitt...

    I'm in urgent need of advice please re my intermittent broadband problems
    For the past week now I've been getting very slow speeds and occasionally the broadband disappears altogether. When it disappears, my phone line goes out too, so I'm convinced it's a problem with the BT line.
    When I first contacted BT they did a line test and confirmed there was a problem with the line. After an hour and a half on the phone to them (on another phone line), both phone and broadband started working again - intermittently. BT now say that the problem is with my internal wiring. I'm getting increasingly frustrated, especially with the BT call centre getting me to repeat the same checklist tests, router resets, etc. As an ex-telecoms project manager I'm not entirely a novice user, and desperately want to get this resolved but don't know how to break through the BT call centre barrier.
    My NETGear Wireless-N stats show the following:
    ADSL Link
    Downstream
    Upstream
    Connection Speed
    896 kbps
    96 kbps
    Line Attenuation
    53.0 db
    31.5 db
    Noise Margin
    10.6 db
    7.0 db
    The speed also looks somewhat lower than the line speeds I should be getting (table below is from BTs ADSL Checker):
    ADSL Max
    Up to 5
    3.5 to 7.5
    Available
    Fixed Rate
    2
    Available
    Can anyone offer any suggestions at all please?
    Many thanks in advance,

  • Urgent: Advice needed for buying my first RAID

    Hi,
    I am looking to place an order today as I have a pile of editing to get through - so I would love to hear your recommendations!
    First of all I am a networking and RAID newbie so don't go all acronym and geek-speek-tastic on me or I won't have a clue what you are talking about. Seriously I don't know my NAS from my elbow!
    My requirements are:
    1. Suitable for working with HDV
    2. 2TB of storage
    3. Must work with PowerMac G5 2GHz Dual (later model)
    4. Must support RAID 5
    5. RAID must be controlled by hardware (on RAID box or via PCIe card)
    The following have been suggested - has anyone used them?:
    Opt1: http://www.enhance-tech.com/products/desktop/t4_cr.html
    (Would probably need to put an eSATA card in my Mac but RAID control is on the box.
    Only goes to 80MB/sec - is this good enough for working with ProRes 422? I am looking to convert my HDV to ProRes 422 before output to mpeg2 as I believe this can give better results.)
    Opt2: http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-SPEED-eS.cfm
    (Would need to put a RAID controller in my Mac so not so good for connecting to other Macs.)
    But I found this and was wondering if it was also suitable (as its cheaper!):
    Opt3: http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=28&PHPSESSID=091b7808cfa54754 383932fc512ea056
    (Would connect by 1Gb/sec ethernet to my Mac. RAID controller on the box. Someone said stay away from ethernet but I don't understand why?).
    Any advice gratefully received. I need to make a decision real quick!
    Keep it mellow, B.

    It appears that you need to step back and rethink your business. Heck, we don’t even know that you have a business. What you’re up to might just be personal editing. So I apologize if what I’m about to say overestimates you or underestimates you.
    FORMAT
    You say, “suitable for working with HDV”, but you don’t say whether you MUST work with HDV. As others in this thread have pointed out, HDV is a “poor man’s Hi-Def”. It compresses images so diabolically in Long GOP that image quality suffers, and, as Shane points out, “the long GOP format is very complex and takes a LOT of time to do things.”
    The other extreme is recording and editing in 1080i/p at 4K. Very few people in this world demand extreme quality. So, the best format overall is DVCPro HD. Today, DVCPro HD cameras cost only about a third more than the next nearest HDV. What’s more important, to me, is that DVCPro allows you to move away from having to use tape at all. It’s the year 2008 (almost). Tape is over. If it’s too late to sell your camera and switch, then so be it.
    STORAGE
    You say, “2TB of storage”. For HD work, that’s a bare minimum. My recommendation is to get a 4-tray or 5-tray box with room to grow, even though the extra trays will remain empty your first 6-12 months.
    Buy an empty enclosure that you can populate with your own drives. That way, you can use 1TB bare drives. (Don’t buy anything smaller.) You can put together a stack of 5 1TB drives in an eSATA RAID box for less than $2,000.
    RAID
    You say, “PowerMac G5 2GHz Dual...via PCIe card”. You mean PCIx card. PCIe is for Intel Macs.
    You write, “I want RAID (esp. RAID 5... If a drive fails I want to simply be able to swap a new drive in, restore, and be under way again.” But several of your comments indicate that you really don’t need in-line failsafe. For that reason, let me recommend mirroring or something even simpler: a backup drive.
    JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) treats each drive in your stack as a separate volume. So, what you see on your desktop is Drive_01, Drive_02. If you subtract the cost for the RAID controller (in the box or in your PCI slot), you can afford to buy TWO plain JBOD boxes, and maintain one as redundant. That satisfies your, “If a drive fails I want to simply be able to swap a new drive in, restore, and be under way again.” In fact, you can skip the “restore” part.
    Ken Summerall wrote: “If you are shooting HDV then you have the tapes, those are your backups. If a drive goes down you recapture.”
    You responded, “that is not the same as having redundancy of data - and simply being able to swap in a new drive and do a restore.”
    You make it sound as though you expect this to happen once a week. It won’t. Backup is good enough. That kind of “time saved” once every year or two isn’t worth it.
    SATA vs. FIREWIRE
    Again, it’s the year 2008 (almost). Why would you want FireWire? Apple is being so stubborn, pretending that eSATA does not exist, because it has so much invested in its FW technology. But even Apple will be forced to come around in its next models.
    While we’re talking about it, the claimed 80MB/sec for the Enhance T4 CR probably refers to the FireWire and USB interfaces, not to the SATA.
    ENCLOSURE SHARING
    You write, “I also wanted to use the same RAID box with a Macbook Pro. So how would two Macs share the same RAID box?
    What kind of sharing do you mean? If you mean that you and your partner can access the same video simultaneously in adjoining rooms, then you need FibreChannel. But, as Shane points out, “...a Fibrechannel setup, then an XServe Server...is NOT cheap.”
    As Ken writes, “You can get a eSata card for your G5 and an ExpressCard for your MBP and share the box. With this you could get a Kona or Blackmagic card and capture your footage as DVCProHD and also have a way to monitor your HDV footage.”
    Amen.
    VENDORS
    G-SPEED is reliable, with good support. Caldigit has a platinum reputation. Of course, there are MaxxDigital, Sonnet and Dulce Systems.
    Enhance is the new kid on the block, and they are significantly less expensive with, in my experience so far, excellent build quality and quick (human) response. They manufacture in Taiwan, but they’re headquartered in -- and ship out of -- Lower California. So they don’t talk to you in Taiwanese as the cheap enclosure sites do.
    So there.

  • Urgent advice needed!

    Hi,
    I'm not even sure this is the right place to be asking this question, as I can't quite figure out what the problem is, but I'm hoping someone else might know the answer.
    I've been given a DVD of some photos from a professional photographer, that I need to do a tiny amount of retouching on before the images go to print. However, when I open them in Photoshop CS3 and do the work, I can't save the results. I've copied them to my hard drive with no problem, but they seem to be locked: "Get Info" says they are 'read only'. I can change the status to 'read and write' in the Get Info window, but this still doesn't allow me to save them after I've worked on them.
    I've spoken to the photographer, and he hasn't set them to be 'read only' (indeed, why would he?), and doesn't know why they should be like this. No previous work I've had from this photographer has had this problem.
    The photos went through Photoshop and Lightroom on a Windows PC before being burned to DVD, if that's any clue....
    So, does anyone know if there is anything I can do to change the permissions on these files so that I can save my work? I have a deadline to hit, so it's quite urgent!
    Many thanks.

    Some more specific details:
    I've been given approx 24 photos in 3 formats each: a set of 72dpi JPG's, a set of 300dpi JPG's, and a set of 600dpi PSD's. Apart from the slight retouching, all will also need to be converted from RGB to CMYK.
    None of the files can be saved, or saved as something else: I've just been through them all trying to save as CMYK, or TIFF, or PSD. When I try, I get an error message that says the file can't be saved because it is locked, and suggest I open the 'Get Info' window to unlock it.
    When I open the 'Get Info' window, the locked checkbox is not checked, but the little padlock bottom right is locked. I can appear to unlock it via the padlock, and change the status, but this still doesn't allow me to save the file.
    In the short term, my best course of action would be to get the photographer to do the retouching and save them as CMYK files in the form I need them, so I can use them without any alteration on my part. The problem is he's on another shoot today. But in any case this isn't a very good long term solution: if I can't alter and save files I'm sent, then my whole job is pointless!
    I'm under pressure to get this solved today, as they are supposed to go to print tomorrow, so if anyone's got any better suggestions I really would like to hear them!
    Many thanks.

  • Urgent advice needed: Road Trip Editing

    i used to work as a director (sports and variety) at a TV boardcasting firm in Hong Kong, i have quited recently and now freelancing.
    i need a mac to do editing while i am on a road trip, it is a reality tv show abt the olympic torch relay, the show is due on-air as we travel, we will FedEx dv tape to Hong Kong every 5-6 days or so.
    1 min program: Mon to Thur
    2 mins program: Mon, Wed, Fri
    24 mins program: Fri
    i want to do simple cut while on the road because i want to share the post-pro workload. There is only one editing team to work on this project in hong kong. i used to work on DBeta panel and had been using non-linear editing (FCP 5.1) for only a year.
    i am thinking of getting te new MBP 15" 2.4 with 4G ram, should i keep on using FCP 5.1 or get a more friendly FCE as my assistant and the script writer have no experience in mac.
    any advice? i am departing coming tuesday
    thank you in advance

    The MBP will work perfectly for what you're trying to do.
    As far as the software, Final Cut Express is more than capable of editing short clips like those you described. Of course, FCP will do it as well, but it's more expensive and harder for your team to learn in a hurry if they have no video editing experience. They can pick up FCE is about 20 minutes if you have them sit down and watch the tutorial videos on apple.com.
    If I were you, I'd go with the MBP and Final Cut Express.

  • URGENT ADVICE Needed on XRAID

    Guys,
    I need advice.
    Q1. Can I connect XServe with single fibre channel cable to XRAID (RAID50), example upper controller and will it show me the full volume?
    Q2. Can I connect two XRAIDs with one XServe on single fibre channel card or do I need to introduce another card to see both the XRAIDs?
    Please advice,
    Thanks...

    Ok Mate, it sounds like I can have two FC cards instead of switch (which is expensive solution). I can always pull back the video card to make more room on PCI slots and manage the xserve from Remote Desktop.
    Another interesting question is that I have made the following RAID config:
    7x500GB (RAID5 - one hdd can go down and no issue) = Vol#1
    7x500GB (RAID5 - one hdd can go down and no issue) = Vol#2
    The above using Diskutil I have made on STRIP Vol#1+Vol#2 = RAID50.
    From the above what are my chances of loosing data based on following three senarios:
    1. what if one of the controller fails, will I still see the entire volume
    2. what if one of the controller fails, will I loose everything on RAID50 (STRIP)?
    3. what if one of the controller fails, I replace the controller with a new one, will I get my data back?
    Please advice the above?
    Thanks

  • Advice needed for oracle certification

    HI
    I have completed my "1z0-007" and "1z0-042"  in 2009.
    Now i am planning to do oracle RAC certification, what is the best way to do it, I mean with my existing certification what other certification i have to do before i write the oracle RAC certififcation ?
    Thanks in Advance.

    The pre-requisite for the RAC certification exam is OCP for the database (the same or higher version).
    Thus, for 1Z0-058 (Grid and RAC Expert in 11g), you need to be an 11g or 12c OCP.

  • Re-post : General Question about Language - Urgent Advice Needed

    IS IT POSSIBLE TO AVOID COMPLETELLY THE DISPLAY/USAGE OF ENGLISH IN PORTAL?
    WE INSTALLED LANGUAGE SPANISH (langinst.cmd) AND OUR CONTENT AREAS HAVE DEFAULT LANGUAGE "SPANISH"(NO ENGLISH TRANSLATION) .
    OUR PAGES/NAVIGATION BARS/STYLES/ETC... WERE CREATED BEING CONNECTED TO THE PORTAL IN SPANISH.
    WE DON'T WANT TO SHOW THE "LANGUAGE" PORTLET FOR USERS TO CHANGE BETWEEN SPANISH AND ENGLISH AND WE DON'T WANT THE PORTAL TO DISPLAY IN ENGLISH IF THE BROWSER SETTING IS ENGLISH.
    I READ SOMEWERE THAT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO "UNINSTALL" A LANGUAGE, THEREFORE I ASSUME WE CANNOT ELIMINATE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
    CAN WE CONFIGURE SOMEHOW "SPANISH" AS A DEFAULT AND "UNIQUE"LANGUAGE SO ALWAYS THE PORTAL DISPLAYS IN SPANISH ??
    I HAVE INSTALLED LATEST VERSION 3.0.9.
    ANY IDEAS/SUGGESTIONS WILL BE MORE THAN WELLCOME!

    Hi Maria,
    One way of using Spanish as the default language is to load the following code in your Portal schema:
    set def off
    /* @Copyright (c) 1999, Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved. */
    create or replace procedure home
    -- create the synonyms for wwpob_page.show
    as
    l_pageid number;
    l_url varchar2(32767);
    function is_language_set
    p_http_language in varchar2 default null,
    p_nls_language in varchar2 default null,
    p_nls_territory in varchar2 default null,
    p_requested_url in varchar2
    return boolean
    is
    l_cookie owa_cookie.cookie;
    l_language varchar2(100) default null;
    begin
    begin
    begin
    l_cookie := owa_cookie.get(wwctx_sso.PERSISTENT_COOKIE);
    exception
    when others then
    l_language := null;
    raise wwctx_sso.NOT_HTTP_SESSION_EXCEPTION;
    end;
    l_language := lower(l_cookie.vals(1));
    exception
    when others then
    l_language := null;
    end;
    if l_language is null then
    wwctx_app_language.set_language
    p_http_language => p_http_language,
    p_nls_language => p_nls_language,
    p_nls_territory => p_nls_territory,
    p_requested_url => p_requested_url
    return false;
    end if;
    return true;
    end is_language_set;
    begin
    -- Mobile support
    if wwpob_api_mobile.is_mobile_request
    then
    l_pageid := wwpob_api_mobile.get_defaultmobilepage;
    else
    l_pageid := wwpob_api_mobile.get_defaultmobilepage;
    else
    l_pageid := wwpob_api_page.get_defaultpage;
    end if;
    l_url := wwpob_page_util.get_page_url(p_pageid => l_pageid);
    if is_language_set('es', 'e', 'SPAIN', l_url) then
    owa_util.redirect_url(l_url);
    end if;
    exception
    when others then
    wwerr_api_error_ui.show_html;
    end;
    show errors procedure home;
    This script looks for the language in the NLS_LANGUAGE cookie. It this cookie does not exist then the language defaults to Spanish because of the code is_language_set('es', 'e', 'SPAIN', l_url). Please make sure to delete the NLS_LANGUAGE cookie, if it exists.
    Please note that this code will work for 3.0.9. In case you want to implement something similar to this on 3.0.8, the code containing the mobile support has to be removed. You can contact me, should you have any questions.

  • Restoring Mac Mini - Urgent advice needed

    Whilst attempting to create a boot camp partition this morning my Mini had a kernel panic. After powering down, when turned back on I have no display so cannot see if any message is being displayed.
    Fortunately I'm fully backed up with Time Machine, but when attempting to insert the Leopard install DVD to try to recover, the disc won't physically load into the drive. I don't have a wired keyboard either so I'm assuming entering any commands at this stage will be impossible (I have 2 Apple wireless keyboards if that's of any use!)
    Can anyone suggest a way to at least get the Leopard disc to insert so that I can attempt recovery?
    And before you ask the machine is out of warranty so Applecare/phone support is not an option.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

    The drive first: If Disk Utility reports an error on exit and does not complete repairs, run it again just to be sure. If it continues to report error on exit it means there is damage to the drive which is greater than Disk Utility can resolve, and you with either then need to get a third party utility such as Disk Warrior or TechTools Pro, or perform a full erase and install of MacOS from your Leopard disk in order to resolve the problem. Obviously if the latter, then you should attempt to back up your data first, since the erase and install involves a full reformat of the drive.
    The fan: This is caused by the fact you performed a PMU reset on your system when in fact it doesn't have a PMU! This procedure causes the fan to run up to full speed at all times. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed solution, but many report that an SMC reset (the Intel system equivalent of a PMU reset which is actually only for earlier PPC systems) works.
    To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
    -From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    -Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
    -Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
    -Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    -Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
    You'll see the only difference really between the PMU reset you performed and the SMC reset you should now do is that the SMC reset does NOT involve holding the power button in while reconnecting power.

  • Urgent advice needed please help!

    I need a new laptop asap that is the urgency part over with!
    The question is: How well would prem pro cs6 operate on a laptop system with:
    Intel i5 4200M dual core 3mb cache 2:6/3.2Ghz processor
    8gb ram
    nvidia gt740  2gb
    Keeping in mind I will mostly be just editing canon dale 1080p footage.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    budget for laptop is 800 euro. So far the best all rounder for vid editing is: Toshiba s70-a-11h
    cheers

    That unfortunately is a common misconception with GPU acceleration. GPU acceleration handles certain frame features such as scaling interpolation, and some effects. It current does not handle decoding/encoding with Adobe. That is handled by the CPU. Because the Decoding has to start the process the CPU determines the overall performance/load on the GPU at any point in time. This also means that at any point in time the CPU is not necessarily handling less load. The CPU is just more focused on what it has to do such as decoding/encoding and many effects. All of this means no I dont think the 740M will change the user experience enough to stop the requirement for rending the timeline to playback. It will help but that is all. The CPU is really low for this type of compression. Pro Res or DNxHD would probably work ok on that CPU simply because the compression level is much lower and they are very efficient codecs with regards to performance. I would suggest looking at Cineform if you need to get this laptop and the realtime playback is not good enough for your workflow. Cineform allows you far better performance with more limited specs.
    BTW 8GB of ram is really low for GPU acceleration and HD. The biggest current mistake people are making is configuring systems without nearly enough ram to optimally handle the GPU acceleration. GPU acceleration requires a significant amount of ram because of how it works and transits through your system ram. Even if a system has the fastest CPU and best GPU, the performance is going to be poor if the system ram is to low. Most of the power available in that config would not even be utilized.

  • URGENT ADVICE NEEDED!-  outputting for iTunes

    I have edited some promo videos for a small record company. They have asked me to supply them edited masters at highest quality to submit to iTunes for sale. They were shot in HDV. What should I give them? Full quality quick time movies? Compress for iPod within FCP? Welcome your advice!
    Thanks

    I think you best give them both. The smallest file size to post on the i-tunes store and the high quality uncompressed to provide to a client via ftp-server. Thats the way i do it.

    Question : Post MBA , I want to get back in SAP field with more functional/technical roles , however I am confused with Module selection. For functional ones, I don't have any background . Few of my friends suggested to learn SAP Solution Manager , however I am confused with it's scope. Please advice the module which will be better to take ahead as per my profile.

    Honestly there is no answer for that until you do it. A mov will work perfectly fine. But there are variables: The quality and sharpness of the original photos. How they survive being compressed to a mov, how that mov survives being compressed to DVD format. The quality of the DVD player (and no, they are not all the same) and finally the crispness of the screen. If all goes well, yes it will look perfectly good. But you're not going to know until you do it.

    Can you hear it?
    You know you can pan every individual sound in UB? And you can SOLO every slot, and investigate one by one? Also: are there any insert or send effects active?
