Urgent backup requirements

Only about 3000 songs, but 11,000+ photos on my MacBook Pro.  Running out of memory -- what is the best backup option(s) for me?

Running out of disk space (not memory; that's RAM) on your internal HD means you need more storage space.
Backups are entirely different.  Those are extra copies, in a different place, in case there's a problem with the originals (the internal HD fails or gets corrupted, the Mac gets lost or stolen, you accidentally change or delete the wrong file, etc.).
You can use an external HD, Time Capsule, etc. for either purpose, but not the same hardware for both -- if you do, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing everything.
For additional storage, you might be able to get a larger internal HD.  Or, you could get an external HD, Time Capsule, etc.
For backups, you could use (a different) external HD, a Time Capsule (unless you put your "overflow" originals on it), etc.
You can use Time Machine (built in to OSX) or other backup apps (the most common are "cloning" apps) for the backups.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  #27 there has some alternatives.

  • My time Machine keeps saying, "Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74 GB but only 289.80 are available." I have already excluded files. I have a 1tb external drive. HELP!!!

For over two weeks now I have been frustated and not having my TIme Machine back up to my 1tb external drive. I dont understand why now its a problem.  It keeps saying
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74GB but only 289.80GB are avialable.  Time Machine needs work space on the bakup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a large backup disk or make the bakup smaller by excluding files." So I have already excluded almost all of my files, and even deleted the backup disk yet, that quote still keeps popping up. I am truly at a wall with this. I have a Mac OS X version 10.7.5. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE????

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.

  • Time Machine Error - Backup Requires 2,211,365.5 GB!

Hello - I have searched the posts and nothing seems to touch on this specifically - I have been using Time Machine successfully for months and this has only started to happen in the last few days.
I have a white Macbook, 10.5.6 with an upgraded 150GB hard drive. I do backups sporadically (once or twice a week), as I don't want to keep my Macbook connected to a hard drive and I find using the airdisk feature on my AEBS takes too long and slows down the network. This has been working fine for me for months, but now I get the following message:
    Time Machine Error
This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 2211365.5 GB but only 125.5 GB are available.
I tried reformatting my disk (250GB hard drive) and the problem still arises. There are no external drives or anything connected to the Macbook at the time.
Can anyone help? I don't want to go out and buy a Hard Drive with a 3million GB capacity!
    Thanks
    Ian

If TM is seeing a ridiculous amount of info to backup like that (2 million gigs is probably not a real number I am guessing) it probably means you have file structure problems that are causing TM to count a folder infinitely in some kind of loop... like maybe a file link to itself that kind of thing.
A disk check usually repairs these sorts of problems and should alleviate your issue.
I believe you are correct and I would add that this case might require stronger medicine such as DiskWarrior to repair the directory structure, if that it the issue.

  • Backup requires 1099GB , but only 300GB available !

I have at least figured out part of this problem. First I get the message:
"Are you sure you want to back up on the disk your original data is on."
But I am choosing the first partition of Bay 2 HD which is a 1TB partitioned into 2 500GB's.
I have a Bay 3 HD which is configured the same.
I say yes I am sure. Then I try to backup and I get the message:
Backup requires 1099GB, but only 300GB is available. I have computed the data on all 5 volumes and it turns out to be 1099GB. The 5 volumes are my main HD which is 500GB, and the 4 partitioned volumes in Bays 1 and 2. This is a total of 2500GB of which 1099GB is used.
Time Machine is trying to backup all 5 volumes on the selected volume. What can I do about this?

I did find one little glitch. If I mount an external drive for backup, etc. and the Time Machine is due to run, and the drive has enough data to put me over the limit of my target volume, then the Time Machine attempt fails. Not so bad, except all the Time Machine backup data is lost. The most recent is still there, but all past data is gone.
    What is causing this?

  • Why does iPhone backup require access to the Internet?

While syncing my iPhone, iTunes first performed a backup. My firewall reported that the backup phase of the sync required access to the Internet. Why would the backup require access to the internet unless it was sending some information?
This makes me a bit worried that some of my personal data is being sent to Apple without my permission.

Whenever your phone is synced and iTunes recognizes there are new crash reports, a program called MDCrashReportTool sends these reports to Apple. Apple then funnels the reports to the correct app developer's iTunes Connect account. No personal information is transmitted.
If this bothers you(it shouldn't), you can turn off the sending of the crash reports:
Right-click on the phone in iTunes, and click "Reset Warnings." The next time you sync, itunes will ask if you want to send the reports. Un-check the "Do not ask me again" option, hit "Don't Send," and you're good to go.

  • Time Machine Error.  Backup is too large for the backup disk.  Backup requires 289.28 GB but only 177.01 GB are available.

My Mac has not been backing up for some time.  Tried Apple Support, but couldn't figure out problem.
    Receive the following error...
    Time Machine Error
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 289.28 GB but only 177.03 GB are available.

See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't clarify the situation, post back with:
How much data is on your internal HD (and any others being backed-up)?
How large is your Time Capsule?
Is there anything else on the TC besides these backups?  If so, what and how large?

  • HT201250 This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.42 TB but only 998.49 GB are available.

I am getting the error ¨This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.42 TB but only 998.49 GB are available¨ when I try to do a time machine backup.  I have a Retina Macbook Pro and am only using 250 GB on the internal drive.  My 1TB external drive that I am trying to use has been complete reformated (case sensitive journaled) and therefore completely empty.  Any ideas why time machine is saying my drive has 1.14 TB when its capacity is no where near that?

Well, at this point I might recommend that you reboot your MacBook Pro while simultaneously holding down the Command - R keys and booting into the Lion Recovery Partition.  There I would enter the "Disk Uility", highlight your Mac HD in the left hand column to select it and run "Repair Disk", and then run "Repair Permissions" twice.  They may resolve the hard drive's confusion in Time Machine.
    Hope this helps

  • TM misestimates size of backup requirements

When returning from some time away from my office, my scheduled TM backup began. I got an error message that "Time Machine could not complete the backup." because "This backup is too large for the backup disk..." To be clear, I had been backing up to this external HDD for quite a while, including deleting old backups when space was needed. The error made no sense given all this.
I used disk utility to erase the external drive and now shows 319GB of space (a 320GB drive). Started again, and got the same error. This piqued my curiosity of how this can be. So:
. Drive being backed up is 320GB; with 22GB available, so while not a lot of room for TM's history functions, clear the the external drive had been and would be able to do a backup.
. Noticed, then, that when the error is reported ("back up too large"), that it says "The backup requires 328.94GB but only 319.0 GB are available." This of course is odd since the drive capacity is only 320GB; how can there be an additional 36GB (22GB + 8GB) of stuff to backup?
. So I looked for things to exclude, and without backing up movies, drop box, and a few others, can lower the estimated size of the backup, but not below the 319GB capacity of the external drive. And, again, this shouldn't be a problem as the drive are the same capacity.
. Further, when doing that exclude, the bottom of the exclude screen estimates the backup size appropriately - 278.6 GB!
So clearly, there is some error in the reading of the backup size in the software. I've double checked all the above and it is all accurate. Thanks for the help.

Your drive is much too small. It varies greatly, depending on how you use your Mac, but Time Machine generally needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing up.
Your immediate problem is, it adds 20% to the estimated size of the backup, for workspace, so it's trying to back up about 274 GB.
Short term, you can probably squeeze a backup onto it by excluding a lot of things, running a backup, then removing the exclusions (so 20% of the next, smaller backup won't be so large) and running another.
That's not going to work for long, though. You need a (much) bigger drive.

  • Backup requires 1.51 TB

    Time Machine Error
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.51 TB but only 162.74 are available."
How could it require 1.5 TB? There's not that much data on the entire 500 GB hard drive so how could the back up be over three times larger.

    A couple of possibilities:
Do you have other drives connected to your Mac? If so, and if they're formatted HFS+, Time Machine may be trying to back them up, too. If so, exclude them via TM Preferences > Options. The "Estimated size of full backup" shown just below that panel will change as you do that.
Something on your internal HD is corrupted, misleading Time Machine about how large some things are. Do a +*Verify Disk+* on it, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • URGENT help required. BBM7 missing after OS upgrade! :(

    Dear BB friends and helpers!
I urgently require your help. I have seen some similar topics posted but none exactly the same as mine so I would really really appreciate if anyone can very kindly help me out.
I have a major problem on the Blackberry Bold 9900.
A few days ago I updated my Blackberry Messanger (BBM only) to BBM7. Everything was working fine.
Then last night I got a message on my phone to upgrade my operating system to OS 7 which I installed.
Then this morning I noticed that my BBM has disappeared from my phone and I can't find it.
    I currently have 7.1.0 Bundle 2061
(Also note that BB App world wont give me the option to download BBM and trying to download other apps also freezes the app world)
    I have already tried
    1) Hard reset / battery pull
    and
    2) Doing a universal search and looking for hidden icons.
I have seen a few other similar topics but I wanted to ask what I should do... :
    1) Re-install BBM7 from a link from this forum? or
    2) Downgrade OS7 to OS 6 via Options - Software Updates - Downgrade?
    Or any other options?
The KEY thing is that I do not lose my BBM contacts! That is the end goal of whatever is recommended. I really hope someone can help.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Kind Regards,
    Michael
