!!URGENT - Caught w/Powerbook in UK - US airline carryon ban - checked?!!!

Need some advice here - I'm in the UK due to fly out of Heathrow soon, all airlines including mine requiring absolutely no carryon baggage because of terrorist threat (wallet, passport only). Because of my travel itinerary I can't leave it here - I also have my iPod, Canon D20 and lenses.
I can pack the iPod and cameras in tupperwares lined with foam and I think they'll survive; but what about my Powerbook!? Will the unpressurized hold destroy it? I have no idea.
Helpful advice - leaving in a few days - thank you!

To Don Corleone,
perhaps you mean the 'UK' mention in the heading of the origonal poster not 'US'?
Anyway the plot thickens. Hm maybe I shouldn't say that in this context. As far as the UK authorities go they now allow laptops in the cabin. They have downgraded the threat level and ammended the rule. See:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dftabout/documents/page/dft_about612280.hcsp
They still say that liquids will be confiscated from passengers to US despite saying presciption medicines (including liquids and aerosols) can be carried in cabin baggage. However the US TSA (see link earlier post) permit liquids even non prescription, essential, liquid medicines such as insulin.( I suspect insulin would be a prescription drug in the UK). I realise the origonal post was not on medicines. I also read that the TSA is the authority for domestic flights only in the USA. Does anyone know who is the US authority for flights from outside the USA?
I would suspect that the UK has got the wrong end of the stick as regards the requirements of the USA in respect of liquid medicines. However if travelling from the UK to USA you dont want to travel without essential medicines (aside from the consideration that UK prescription medicines are cheaper) and you dont want to have to opt out of travelling at the last moment and have your hold luggage go to USA and not you (a risk and to you an inconvenience). Neither do you want to delay the whole flight whilst your hold luggage is then taken off.
I wonder what the cabin staff will do with people who develope pneumonia in flight having waited in the pouring rain outside Heathrow buildings(or the temporary 'marquee' ((I kid you not)) because the terminal building is full?

  • Powerbook G4 will not install OS X

Hey guys, so my sister gave me her old Powerbook G4 15inch 1.5 ghz. She had a lot of stuff on it and I had the great idea of reinstalling the system software and starting fresh. I did the following:
    1) Started up in Target Disk Mode
    2) Plugged it into my friend Macbook with OS X 10.5 installed
    3) Repartitioned the powerbook's harddrive as MacOS Extended and checked the "Install os 9 drivers" option
So everything formatted and the hard drive is empty. So now I try to install OS X 10.5 from my install DVD and the laptop spits it right back out after a minute or so. My sister doesn't have her original disks, so I borrow my friends OS X 10.3 install CD's. When I start up the computer will begin to read the disks and then the grey screen with the apple logo comes up, about a minute later the logo changes from the apple to a "DO NOT ENTER" that circle with a line thru it, sign.
This is where I'm at.. Can ANYONE PLEASE help... If I just start up the computer it will only get as far as a grey screen with a blue folder that switches from the little blue face thingy to a question mark and back...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you do may not be using the right discs. If you want to install Leopard, you will need the retail DVD--black with the purple aurora. If you want to install the original OS (Panther?), you need the exact install discs for the PowerBook. If you don't have these, you can call Apple with the serial number and get a replacement set for a fee.
Any other gray machine specific discs will simply not work. These are optimized for the computer they were shipped with.
The ?/Mac face just reflects the fact that the drive you erased is empty and there is no OS on it.
The idea of erasing and reinstalling the system software is basically a good idea. It just sounds like you are trying to use the wrong discs and will need to try to acquire the right ones.
    Good luck!

    many thanks

Odd... according to the specification in the PDF document available form this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86460 1.33 17" PowerBooks have Gigabit ethernet...
Check the System Profiler (click on the Apple logo, select "About this Mac" and press the "More..." button. I think the ethernet capabilities should be available somewhere).

  • Powerbook 520c on the web?

I have a powerbook 520c with a floppy drive. When I plug the ethernet into my network, the server doesn't assign it an IP address. Also, there is no browser to use once the connection is up and running.
Is there any way to connect to my iMac via ethernet and connect to the internet via its airport connection? Is there a way to copy files from the iMac to my 520? The iMac is running 10.4.

    Yes to all.
Older versions of the MacOS only request an IP address (and indeed, turn on TCP/IP) when an application tries to use TCP/IP. So if you don't have any TCP/IP apps, you'll never have TCP/IP turn on.
As for web browsers, your best bet is iCab (http://www.icab.de) It's the most modern 68040-compatible browser out there.
For getting it on the 'net in the first place, if your iMac connects via AirPort, and you want to plug the 520c in to the iMac, you'll need to turn on Internet Sharing. It's in the 'Sharing' pref pane, under 'Internet'. Tell it where to share the connection from (AirPort,) and where to share it to (Built-in Ethernet.) Then click 'Start'. Finally, plug the Ethernet cable in to both the iMac and the PowerBook.
How to copy files? Well, you need to enable AppleTalk on the iMac (Network pref pane, 'Configure' your adapter that will connect to the PowerBook, go to the 'AppleTalk' tab, and check off 'Make AppleTalk Active'.) Then you'll need to tell the PowerBook to use Ethernet for AppleTalk (Either the 'AppleTalk' or the 'Network' control panel, depending on if you're using 'Classic' or 'Open Transport' networking,) finally, enable file sharing on one of the computers. (I find it easier from the newer Mac,) and connect from the other one.
    Hope that helps!
(P.S. If you have the PCMCIA adapter, you can even have your PowerBook connect wirelessly with an old WaveLAN/Orinoco card! See http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html)

    Hi,
    Look into below explanation...
check u r poll intervel and give more time in poll intervel and try...
The processing with huge amount of data with PI7.0
is possible with manipulating some of the parameters in communication channel or in SXMB_ADM or increasing JAVA stack etc.,
It all depends on the how many bytes does each record comprise of...
You can check sap notes for processing huge files.
some times you can increase the java heap size..
you can split the file if you feel it is required

As you had said about Advanced Adapter Engine to support huge data in PI 7.0
is not available. this feature is in PI7.1 only.

the above weblog can help u in that..
    OR
    check the config parameters there.
What you could do is, poll for the file, and in the adapter, you could split the file and send 500 records each at a time.
This would reduce the load considerably.

  • Powerbook 1400 info please!

    Hello,
After just yesterday buying a new logicboard for my PB 1400 and installing it (since the old one wouldnt charge or run the batteries) I have decided to do some more for this PB and have a few questions (I guess I can call this thread Powerbook upgrade questions Version 2 since these questions are new and not asked in the previous version)
1.) Where can I get Powerbook 1400 RAM VERY CHEAP? (Ive checked eBay but there to expensive)
2.) There is this wierd problem with the power management whenever I charge the battery it works fine off it but then when it gets down to level 6 or level 5 from level 8 it jumps down to level 3 or below and says that your powerbook is running on reserve power. why? Also when I put it on charge it will start jumping up from a level 1 to a level 3 or 4 and then in 20 mins or before be full.
3.) How do I reinstall OS 9 with only 24 MB of RAM?
4.) This is a very important question that Im very suprised hasnt ever been asked here before. How do you use CD-RW disks which I burn from my iMac on my PB 1400 8x CD-ROM drive? It run CD-R disks fine except when I try to listen to music off a disk it will sometimes in the middle of the song just stop and go back to the beginning of the disk as if I hit the stop button on Apple CD Player.
4.) Did they ever make a G4 processor upgrade card?
5.) What are the benifits of upgrading to a G3 card?
6.) Everytime I attempt to play a Quicktime movie in QT 6.0.3 it will either completly freeze up or go very slow. Why?
7.) Where can I get a new 2005-2006 (or for time travlers 2006+) made battery for this old PB? I heard there are some companies that still make them. Is this true?
8.) On a scale of 1-10 in how fast this Powerbook will be with maxed out RAM and an white iBook G3 (not clamshell) is a 7 what would this pb be?
9.) Can I buy a book cover with the lightup white Apple logo in the middle like on the iBook and the Powerbook G3+?
10.) How can I tell how much VRAM is installed?
11.) How much VRAM can be installed?
12.) How do I use a USB printer with my PB 1400 (I know it dont support USB but what about through a wired or wireless network)?
13.) I ordered a Global Village pc card which runs at 10Base-T. Whats the main difference between the 10Base-T and 100Base-T?
14.) How long does the screen last?
15.) How do I get the screen up to more then 1000 colors?
16.) Are there DVD-ROM drives for the PB 1400?
17.) Are there internal CD burners for the PB 1400?
18.) Are there external CD-Burners for the PB 1400?
19.) What will it be compared to my iMac DV 400MHZ running OS X 10.4.6?
20.) What will it be compared to my PM 8600 300MHZ running OS 9.2.2?
21.) Now I know everyone will say "YOU CANT INSTALL OS X ON A PB 1400" but I heard that you can install the original OS X. How?
22.) Will it ever be possible to install OS X 10.2 or up?
23.) Do companies still make accesories for the PB 1400 or hardware components (like a G4 processor)?
24.) Where can I get an internal ethernet card?
25.) What kind of wireless card will I need to conect to my wireless network?
26.) How do I make the IR port and IRDA complient port?
Thankyou for reading and responding and happy 4 of July holiday for those of you who celebrate it!
P.S. You dont have to answer them all just answer the ones you know. Thanks again and be on the lookout for Version 3 in early December or before!!

    Apple Rules
    In order:
    1) Not in many places. It's nearly a decade since RAM card producers will have had any incentive to offer cards. Most of the larger-value expansion cards will have found permanent homes, and do not change hands cheaply even when they do change hands. Small cards, even when they are cheap, are not much use.
    2) You describe the classic symptoms of a failing battery. Its storage capacity is now small. The battery is rapidly charged and rapidly exhausted because only a portion of the original capacity is accessible. The rest of the battery just makes up package weight. The cure is a new, new battery, as opposed to new, old stock, or an old, old corpse. Good luck in finding or affording a new, new battery.
    3) With only 24MB of RAM (base 16? expansion 8?) you are faced with using virtual memory, which will carry the penalty of slower processing as data are swapped to and from the HDD. However, OS 8.6 is far better suited to the 1400. Even that OS will need that you use VM when only 24MB of physical RAM is present.
4.1) The 1400 was supplied with a 6x, 8x or 12x CD-ROM to read CD-R discs. The world of CD-ROM has continued to 'develop', but the 1400 has not changed to keep up. With CD-R (data or audio) blanks as cheap as chips, there is little point in challenging older Macs with CD-RW discs, and a challenge it is. The challenge is something to avoid, because it is unlikely to be overcome.
4.2) The architecture of the 1400s is 16-bit NuBus. Using a 128-bit 3-gigaflop supercomputer with a subprocessor ('velocity engine') that can process up to eight floating point calculations per cycle, the G4 processor, in a board designed for NuBus would have been akin to putting lead boots on a sprinter and expecting him to sprint up a sandhill. It was sad enough to put G4 processors on G3 boards, as happened to the initial 400MHz G4 model.
    5) The processor will run faster, and, perhaps, more efficiently. There may be enlarged cache memory. The data path between processor and cache may be fast. Everything else will be as original. Instead of a pint a minute through a small-bore tube, the processor will be trying to shove a gallon (or more) a minute through the same drinking-straw. There will be an observable and worthwhile lift in total performance, but a 466MHz processor will not produce a 14x lift in benchmarked performance, because the drinking-straw is inelastic. And 14x the sytem bus speed is bordering on ridiculous. (Says he who uses 233 and 400MHz upgrades in 1400s.)
    6) At this point I shall use Father William's riposte: "I have answered six questions, and that is enough". There is a WWW, and there are books, magazines and libraries, and you will retain what has been written for you before much better if you discover it for yourself.

  • Invoice for old powerbook

    Hi,
I purchased an apple powerbook G4 in June 2005, and also purchased a 3 year warranty plan few months back. However, I found that the warranty dates are misquoted now. I heard from apple that I need the purchase invoice to set the dates properly. But, I am not finding any invoice in my online account. It seems I can view only orders in the last 18 months. Is there any other way I can get my invoice? Here are more details of my order.
Please let me know how I can get the invoice.
    Regards,
    Amith

Hi, Amith. You received a paper copy of the invoice with the computer. If you didn't save that, too bad — it's a very good idea to file away the invoice for any sizable purchase you make, in case of just such a problem as the one you have now.
I had a similar mixup over my own extended AppleCare Protection Plan: in registering my AppleCare plan with Apple, I had misread an "S" as a "5" in my Powerbook's serial number. When I checked up later to make sure my coverage was in efffect, I found that no AppleCare plan was associated with my Powerbook's correct number, but whoever owned a Powerbook with the other number was covered by the plan I had paid for. The mistake was entirely mine and it was eventually straightened out, but not until I had sent in copies of my invoices for the Tibook and the APP coverage (which I bought separately, at different times).
I hope you're able to get the information you need from the store. Good luck.

  • IBook G4 vs. PowerBook G4

    Hello,
I just recently ran into a little cash, and I was going to buy either a PowerBook G4 or iBook G4 from eBay. I can afford either, and either way I would be forfeiting my pre-ordered copy of the Halo 4 Limited Edition...Which do you think would be worth it? Halo, the iBook, or the PowerBook?
I would mostly be using it for word processing and web browsing, no heavy tasks like video editing or something. I hear the PowerBook has better screen resolution, which I value greatly, but the iBook is about forty dollars cheaper...I also like the look of the PowerBook, but the iBook is more portable and a large margin cheaper. The iBook is $140.45 and the PowerBook is $185. I would wait for Halo to come out and buy one of them, but seeing as they're listed for less than a week, and someone could buy them in that time frame, I would just like to hear your guys's opinion on whether Halo or the iBook or PowerBook is worth it.
    Thanks!

Check the other specifications for the specific machines you are buying.  You really want one that is pretty much maximized for all features to try to keep up in a world 8 (?) years after those machines came out.
I was recently given two PBs.
One is a 14" PB G4 that has a dead drive and the hassle of installing one plus the cost of a drive for it just isn't worth it.  It also only has 512MB RAM which is realistically at the very low end for any version of OSX, even Tiger and Leopard.  I could sink $200 in fixing it and then I'd have a $185 machine.
The other one (12" 1.2 GHz if I recall, with around 1 GB RAM) has a 40 GB HD at 5400 rpm and Leopard OS.  It takes forever (well, at least a minute) to boot.  With Leopard OS and a few applications it's already around 15GB.  Factor in needing to leave around 10 GB free at all times for general OSX happiness, that leaves me with about 15 GB for stuff.  In the modern day that's not much.  I dump a couple of days of photos nd video from my camera and it's full. I used it on a short trip a week ago and it was okay but left me really wishing I had my G4 desktop.  It was better than nothing but it is going to sit on the shelf between trips when I absolutely need a notebook model.
I guess what I'm saying is, don't get a machine you won't want to use, and don't get one that you're going to have to sink a huge amount into in order to get it running well.
