Urgent: Editing H.264 .mov from my Canon T1i

My issue is pretty urgent.  I have a video project to shoot in 3 days and hoped to use my new T1i (500D).
I got my camera yesterday and this morning found out that attempting to edit the camera's H.264 clips (720p) in Premiere is problematic.
I'm on a windows xp machine and Premiere Pro CS2.
I can import the .mov file into my premiere project, but playback is very choppy.
I've been reading around the web about codec/avi converters etc...
I'm also considering upgrading my computer... I wonder if this same issue exists on Premiere for Mac -- or is it a Windows issue?
Any insight is really greatly appreciated.

Hard to say.  I've got 8 cores and 16 GB of RAM, and the few 5D Mark II
clips I've been able to test are still choppy both in Quicktime Player
Pro and Premiere Pro.
In Pr 4.1, 5D Mark II footage plays and edits like 1080p30 AVCHD footage
did in Pr 4.0.  As a counterpoint, 1080p30 AVCHD footage Pr 4.1 plays
and edits now as smooth as glass.  So there are obviously some
optimizations for footage from the 5D that are necessary, just like
there were for AVCHD.
So how T1i 720p30 footage will play and edit is a big fat mystery.  But
unless you have a quad-core system with sufficient RAM, you don't stand
a chance.

  • "Error opening file" - H.264 .MOV from Canon DSLR won't load.

    Hello!
I've had success with Speedgrade, before a recent reformat of my system. I shot some test video on my Canon T3i, which records H.264 .MOV at 1920x1080 23.976 frames per second. I have Quicktime 7 installed. Somehow I get this error. Please help, and thanks!

UPDATE: Somehow, hours later, it miraculously works. I'm sorry to those who still have this issue, but I have done literally nothing with my computer, but instead went out for beer and returned to find it working.

  • MVI movies from my Canon Camera

I burned photos from my Canon Digital Camera onto a DVD using Export and the individual photos are fine but the MVI files won't run as short movies. Any suggestions of what to do? I also tried the back-up method (burn)in IPhoto 9.0 and no luck there either.

Thanks. I'd love to install that one, but i've heard some stories that this piece of software does quite some harm to some things. I dont remember where i read that or what harm it would do. but i'm sure i've heard it someone say.
can you confirm this? or do you still very much recommend me to install this?

  • Import and edit motion jpeg movie from d-lux 5

I have a leica d-lux 5 that can shoot 720 HD via motion jpeg. I use the sd card adaptor to import the movies into the iPad. the movies go into the photos app and play just fine. You can also add the movies to iPad keynote presentations for example.
The thing is I can not seem to get the movies to show up in imovie which means I can edit them into a movie. Seems strange I can see the movie via keynote but not imovie...
Has someone found a way to add movie files from a camera via sd card adaptor to the iPad2. This is a great workflow for vacationing with a camera that shoots hd and and iPad2.

Greg, I have exactly the same question. It seems Apple expect you to only want to edit video shot directly from your iPad.
The only workaround I have found, and this is only if you have a free wifi connection.
From your Import folder, forward the video clip to yourself as an email attachment. In the received email, you can then detach the file into the Camera Roll.
This is very messy, but it does work.

  • Importing avi movies from my Canon camera makes iPhone crash

Every time when i make some movies with my Canon camera (Powershot S2 IS) and I want to import them, together will all my pics on my camera, into iPhoto it makes iPhot crash from the point where it is importing the first AVI movie it comes across.
Now I've successfully imported the movies onto my harddrive now using the Image Capture program, but still when I want to import the movies from my harddrive into iPhoto, or even when i want to play them in Quicktime, it makes iPhoto crash, and also Quicktime crashes when i'm trying to view the movie in there.
can somebody point me to an alternative solution or tell me what's wrong and what i need to fix in order to fix it?

Thanks. I'd love to install that one, but i've heard some stories that this piece of software does quite some harm to some things. I dont remember where i read that or what harm it would do. but i'm sure i've heard it someone say.

  • Editing on i movie from dvd

I have several old VHS home movie tapes as well as cassettes from a cam recorder that I want to convert to DVDs.  I understand there are converters (from Best Buy?) which can convert VHS and cassettes to DVDs.  If I can get that far can I then download the DVD on to my MacBook Pro and edit the movies with imovie and then burn the edited version on to a new DVD.  Any better way of accomplishing this?

I have done lots of that.
    For maximum quality here is my procedure:  ADVC300 > iMovie 06 > iDVD 09 / 11
To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300 (much better than the roxio easy vhs to dvd).  With the ADVC300 Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 11).
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.

  • Editing H.264 Footage from Canon SX 1 IS

Hello, I've just bought a new camera, the Canon SX 1 IS, which shoots 1920x1080p at 30fps using H.264. The clips are imported by iPhoto and play fine in iPhoto and iMovie. But when I try to edit in FCE, the timeline playback is extremely choppy. Opening a clip in the viewer is absolutely fine, the clip will play back at full frame rate and quality. But as soon as it's dropped into the timeline, it's choppy and slow. Turning off Unlimited RT does not make any difference. Is there something I'm doing wrong here? I am at a loss to understand why the clips play fine in the viewer (and I can edit normally in iMovie) but FCE spits the dummy. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers, David

Tom, I'm using Final Cut Express 4.0.1.
The clips from the SX 1 are:
    Creator - Quick Time Player
    Tracks - 1V,2A
    Vid Rate - 30fps
    Frame Size - 1920x1080
    Compressor - H.264
    Data Rate - 5.1 MB/sec
    Pixel Aspect - Square
    Field Dominance - Upper (0dd)
    Alpha - None/Ignore
    Composite - Normal
    Audio - 1 Stereo
    Aud Rate - 44.1KHz
    Aud Format - 16-bit Integer

  • After bringing in the movie from (a Canon) video camera in iMovie and finishing a Project where do you save the project and make DVD using iDVD?

I am trying to burn DVD of the movie I have taken using a Canon and/or aSony video camera. I brought in the movie in iMovie. Enhanced  the movie adding titles and various transitions and completed the project.  Now how do I make a or several DVD of the movie using iDVD? please help.

You can either share it directly to iDVD by choosing Share > iDVD or you can export it using your favorite preferred settings by choosing Export to Quicktime. With the former method, iDVD will open automatically, with the latter method, open iDVD and drag in your movie. With both: choose a theme for your menu (what people will see when the DVD first starts playing) - you should play around a little to learn how to use iDVD. In any case, when done, you can burn directly from iDVD.

  • How to upload a movie from my canon power shot to my macbook on iphoto?

    Hi,
I have a canon power shot in which I have a very short movie. I want to put it on my macbook so I can upload it to you tube. I have tried to put it on iphoto but I'm still trying to learn that application so I'm not even sure I can do that. Can someone please help?

The easiest way to move it to the Mac is to use Image Capture, in your Applications Folder.
iPhoto is a database for organising your pics and photos from your camera.
    Have a look here

  • Adobe Media Encoder Fails to convert the H264 movs from may Canon 5D mark 2, to Cineform AVI's

It fails no mater what codec settings I have tried.....forcing me to use the HD Link that came with NeoScene( Cineform)....Once converted by HDLink, the Adobe Media Encoder is fine transcoding the Cineform avi's to any format it normally works with.
While not a huge problem--certainly I "can" always use HDlink to convert the mov's....I would like to get this fixed.....
And then there is the issue of what should be the appropriate way to metalog when I dump 300 new clips into the system that were just shot.....Of course it is easy with the mov files, but really I would think they should all be transcoded to Cineform AVI's before doing anything...Thoughts?
    Dan Volker

I'm not even sure if this qualifies as a "bug". The only thing at issue (if I understand correctly) is that AME is failing to recognize the PAR of the file. AFAIK, there is no "standard" for flagging PAR in AVI files (aside from DV footage, which can have simple boolean 16x9 flag).
Adobe has their RIFF headers -- but this is by no means a standard across the entire industry. There is no indication that your file contains any PAR information whatsoever.
If you open the file in Premiere, you should be able to right-click on the clip in the Project window, go to Interpret Footage and select the correct PAR of 1.333.
The problem is that the standalone version of AME does not have an "Interpret Footage" option to override PAR assumptions for AVI files, etc. that are added to queue. This is a good idea for a feature request for future versions of AME.

  • H.264 movies from Mac show garbage on PC

Movies I've been making on the Mac show video garbage when played on an XP machine. But the sound is fine.

It's a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop that I have just replaced the hard drive on. I had upgraded to XP SP2 as required by the current QuickTIme installer, but I was not aware of the 110 other updates waiting for this system. Now that they have all been installed too, the QuickTime movies play correctly.
I'm sorry to have posted a needless question.

  • I am unable to open raw files from my Canon T1i in Adobe Camera Raw of my version CS3 of Photoshop.  I have tried to update my ACR by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe website but I am still unable to open raw files, just JPEG.  Is there a way to use

I am unable to open raw files taken on my Canon Rebel T1i in my version of Photoshop CS3.  When I import raw files into Bridge they come up as patches with CR2 on them and when clicked on, a notice comes up stating that Photoshop does not recognize these files.  I tried to update my Adobe Camera Raw by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe Website, but when I clicked on the plus-in, I got another message that Photoshop does not recognize this file.  I spoke with a representative from Canon who said that I could not update CS3 and that I should subscribe to the Cloud.  I would prefer to use my CS3, if possible.  Can anyone advise me what to do?

The T1i was first supported by Camera Raw 5.4 which is only compatible with CS4 and later
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    Some options:
    Upgrade to CS6
    Join the Cloud
Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all T1i Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS3
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC

  • Problem tranferring movies from Canon T2

I have been attempting to tansfer movies from a Canon T2 - works fine when transfering to Laptop but iPad 2 does not work.

I do the same as Smtr in letting the Canon reformat the card instead of just erasing the photos from the card. Also I never let iPhoto do the erasing as there have been too many reports of incomplete uploads and complete erasures. Not a good thing.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to import AVCHD movies from Canon HR10 (mini DVD) to iMac / iMovie?

I have just bought an iMac (I am a PC user for a very long time and not yet familiar with the Mac software), and I am having troubles with some basic tasks: I want to transfer AVCHD movies from my Canon HR10 (mini DVDs) to my iMac / iMovie. However, the iMac / iMovie does not seem to recognize the camera when I connect it via the USB cable, i.e. nothing happens at all (the disc is finalized, and the camera is in "Play" mode). I have also tried to import the contents of the mini DVDs via a network harddisk, but iMovie does not seem to recognize the format?! I don't know what I am doing wrong?

I think iMovie will want to see the camera as a device before it will do the import.
Not sure you can import direct from the card, as your experiments have shown.
It may be due to the processing of the video as it comes off the camera.
Other people may have a solution though.

  • Why I cannot import movies from my camera to iMovie?

I have an iMac with Mac OS X 10.7.5 and I'm trying to download some movies from my Canon PowerShot SX210IS. To download movies I am using iMovie 09 Version 8.06.
When I click on the "Open Camera Import Window" it only shows one alternative as shown below.
It shows "Built-in iSight" and there is no other alternative to select my camera ...
How can I make iMovie to show my camera in the down arrow so I can select it and download my movies?
Your advise and recommendation will be appreciated very much.
    Antares

    Hello AppleMan1958:
Thanks a lot for your answer, but this is exactly what I am doing and what it does is showing my own picture from the camcorder in my computer. I don't have any alternatives to directly import my movies from my camera.
I have received answer from Klondike Kid and gave me the possible cause of my problems. iMovie does not recognize digital still cameras as "movie" cameras. I will have to use an external USB card reader in order to import directly from iMovie.
Again, thanks a lot for your answer.
