URGENT.  Good place for Macbook repairs?

My Macbook hard drive has failed. When I try starting it up, it doesn't go past a white screen with a "no trespassing" symbol on it. I have tried using the reinstall disks but nothing happens and the disks just get stuck. The data may or may not be recoverable.
The Genius Bar could not handle my case, so they recommended me to Tekserve.
I went to Tekserve and they told me they would try to get the desired data off and place it onto an external hard drive. However, they said that if they got everything off that I wanted, then the charge would be something over $800. Also, they asked me what specific data I wanted off (and I would ideally want everything off). Based on ratings (e.g. google map ratings - search for "tekserve nyc"), I figured that this might not be the best place to go.
So, +*for those who have needed something repaired on a Macbook, particularly regarding failed hard drives, what places would you recommend*+ (preferably describe just how successful the operation was, and around how much it cost)?
Thank you very much for your help.

For a wrap-up to this thread, does anyone know how data recovery works exactly?
Any number of different things. The simplest is to use heavy-duty drive recovery software. Worst-case scenario is that some drive hardware is so bad that it has to be taken apart in a clean room and the drive rebuilt.
To narrow this question down, I'm wondering specifically about two things:
(1) Why can't they just automatically get all of my data off, instead of asking me what specific data I want off?
Part of the problem would be that failed hard drives may only last so long before they completely go and/or the amount of time it takes to do this costs a lot of money/time. You could have crashed hard drive where the data can't be completely recovered. If it's in bad shape, there's a good chance that recovery efforts are destructive to the drive data in the long run. You're really looking at getting the most important stuff off the failed drive before it completely dies.
(2) How secure is my data (can I trust that they won't be opening files, or even looking at file names that may suggest important private information?)?
You could do some research on it. There's the off chance that you private information is snooped, but if it's that important to you, what choice do you have?

  • Good Stand For Macbook Air

    Hey,
I'm looking for a good stand for the MBA. One not to large.
Anyone currently using any of the following (or suggest others)
    Logitech Alto Connect
    http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/notebook_products/stands/devices/3074&cl=roeu, en
Concern, the back end it might stick out too much behind the MBA.
    Plus, built in USB Hub.
    Raindesigninc.com MStand
    http://www.raindesigninc.com/mstand.html
Like the simplistic design, goes well with MAC setup, curious how it looks with cables.
Looking forward to your opinions helping me make a purchase decision.
    Cheers!

I don't like either of these because neither of the stands can really be adjusted. My favourite stand of all time is this (which is better than any stand I have seen sold in the U.S.)
    http://www.powersupportusa.com/products/ergo-mbpro.php?category=mb
This stand is made by a Japanese company. However, it may not work with the MacBook Air because of the location of the power plug. I could be wrong though. I own the stand but I don't own a MacBook Air so I can't say if it does or doesn't fit.

  • Good Hardrive For Macbook

does anyone know of a hardrive for the macbook maybe 100GB or 120GB? and sometihng not to expensive? and maybe a good brand for 1GB memory upgrades? thanks for the help in advance!

Any 2.5" SATA hard drive in that size range isn't going to be CHEAP...but make sure that the drive is 5400RPM to be safe, as that's what's listed for the 60 and 80 gig drives. Beyond that...can't really say, presumably all should go well if the new drive "fits the bill" in terms of specs and whatnot, but keep your original around just in case.
If all else fails I have had people say that a local apple retail store actually installed/upgraded the drive in store...so that may be another option if you want to know you're getting something that'll work.
In terms of memory, there are some manufacturer's out there that actually brand their memory as "apple memory". OCZ is one of them, and I have had a lot of people say they've had luck with Crucial SO-DIMM's. Again, as long as they're 667MHz PC2-5300 SO-DIMM modules you're more then free to give 'em a shot...but if you start to have what seem to be memory issues there's not much apple'll do to back you up.

what do you mean by a stand? a keyboard stand kind of thing that goes on the floor? or a laptop stand that you can sit on a table?
I use an icurve stand on my desk for my MBP, which is perfectly fine for putting the screen at eye level. I use a wireless keyboard and wireless mighty mouse, so for all intents and purposes, my MBP pretends to be a desktop machine. but, this kind of thing might be dicey for live use cos the MBP just sits on it, in a live concert environment it could maybe fall off, depending on how hardcore the mosh pit gets and how many stage divers you encounter.
what about straps so you can hang it in front of you from your shoulders like an accordion?...
ok maybe not. but I did see another brand of laptop stand thingy other than the icurve in a store once, that was made of metal and seemed quite ok. you could probably get something like this and then get a keyboard stand and put it on top of that. or, you could use a keyboard stand and get a plank of wood or some kind of table top to put on it, so you can put your MBP and mixer and whatever else on it.

  • Where is the good place for ejb3.0

I am where is a good place to learn EJB3.0 step by step. I could not find a place from sun.
    THanks!

The EJB 3.0 spec is still being revised, so all the documentation out there should not be considered authorative. There aren't any major changes in the works, but the details and syntax will likely change between now and when the spec is declared final. We will put out a Java EE 5 Tutorial beta (with EJB 3.0 info) in the fall, when all the specs have stabilized.
Oracle's site on EJB 3.0 has some good stuff, although it's based on an old draft of the spec, so keep that in mind.

The EJB 3.0 spec itself is available here:

  • Good projector for macbook pro?

Hi there, looking for a good projector that will work with my macbook pro, connectivty, or wireless would be great. I'm going to project my desktop onto canvas, i have vector layers to do some trace painting. so really just need hi-def still shots. But if i can get a good one that i can use in the future for video that would be nice as well, or something compatible with apple tv. just a good, small projector. thanks!

It works fine with my Macbook Pro.
Someone may want to know the video playback. It can play video smoothly and clearly.
It is wonderful that it really plugs the USB cable only for projection (no VGA cable, no mini display port cable, no charger), that is convenient for me to do my presentation.
If you are interested, you may find the details in the following:

  • Good Deal for Macbook 2007?

A friend of mine is selling me his 2007 white macbook. I'm not too familiar with macbooks, so I wanted to get an idea if its worth $500. Here are the specs:
    13 inch white macbook
    intel core 2 duo
    2.13 ghz
    320 gb hard drive
    1.5 gb ram
running os x 10.6 snow leopard
    price : $500
Is this a good deal? Thank you guys so much for the help

Legally, in order to run the Mac OS on any Apple computer, the owner of the computer must also have the corresponding discs for that machine. All Apple computers come with 2 installation DVDs (except for the recent MacBook Airs, which have the OS on a USB stick) which are machine-specific and cannot be used with another Mac. The 2007 MacBook would have had Tiger or Leopard installed originally and then would have been upgraded to Snow Leopard.
If you have further questions or need more clarification, let me know!

  • A good stand for MacBook?

  • Good place for iBoook spares (Uk)?

    Hi people.
I've just recently purchased a 12" iBook 1.2gHz G4 from good ol' eBay. Now, as it's from eBay, we all know it's going to have some problems. On the auction, the guy listed them as follows:
*"The only defective items found on this iBook are the keyboard and probably the trackpad assembly, both are easy and inexpensive eBay replacements:*
So, I emailed him to ask him what that meant exactly, and he replied with the following:
*"The only faulty items I am aware of are the keyboard assembly and the trackpad assembly, which is the item the keyboard mounts on to. Replacement of these two items should restore the ibook to full functionality.*
I asked both these questions just before the auction finished, so I'm presuming that the iBook is going to need a top case (the bit with the trackpad). The airport card and the little piece of metal work is also missing, but I'm not fussed about this: the main use for this iBook is for when I go to motorsports so I can download and evaluate pictures between races (I don't have the steadiest hand, and often find I bin lots of pics, and therefore end up with no pics at all of certain cars etc!). All I want to do is get it ship-shape.
So, as per the title-other than eBay, does anybody know or can recommend any good UK Mac spare part suppliers?
    Cheers!
    Dan

    Hi Dan,
I found http://www.thebookyard.com/partsibookg4_12.php?cPath=3024&page=7 which has various top case assemblies. I haven't used them so cannot comment one way or the other as to their service or quality of goods.
Be aware that in removing the top case the thin fragile power cable will have to be disconnected. Great care needs to be taken to avoid damage to the wire, socket and/or logic board.
    Refer to iFixit for instructions.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • Anyone know a good place for Sony camcorder batteries?

This is a bit off-topic for this forum, but does anyone know a good online store where I can order spare batteries for a Sony HDR-SR5 camcorder? One battery isn't going to cut it. I know some of you on this post have an SR5.
The Sony store is waaaay too expensive, and all the off-brand online stores seem too dogdy.
    Thanks,
    Otto

I wouldn't expect a big drop too soon. That's a lot of RAM density on a small board. Unless there's a major increase in demand I wouldn't expect much of a drop in price.
No doubt there may be cheaper prices than Datamem's. Although their prices are usually competitive, they are not always the cheapest. But they do offer good service, fast delivery, have a good return policy, and experience with Macs. My recommendation is based on a 10 year history with them which has been 100 percent satisfactory.
But $500 for a marginal 1 GB of RAM is a lot. I'm not convinced it's enough to warrant going from 2 GBs to 3 GBs. I have 2 GBs in mine and it seems perfectly fine for my needs.

  • Good place for javascript? "Inline Popup"  Examples?

This is what I want but I don't know what to call it:
I want a sort of inline popup; it should be a box that

it to stay for, perhaps, 20 seconds and then disappear again.

    anyone have
