URGENT- h.264 to ProRes issues

A client sent me a series of .mts videos that Compressor wasn't able to recognise. I used an MTS converter a friend recommended, which was only capable of converting to h.264. These videos look fine and I was confident that I could just convert them to ProRes and begin editing.
However, when I looked at the resulting ProRes videos, they look really "laggy" and kind of like they are being played in slow motion. It's really choppy and horrible. I figured it was something like wrong frame rate but everything I've checked seems to match the original video.
I'm absolutely stumped, I've tried pretty much every combination of settings in Compressor but can't work it out.
I can't edit in h.264, but the ProRes files look like garbage.
Please help, this is quite urgent.

H.264 and prores proxy question

I've read through a ton of posts about proxy and h.264 workflows but didn't find any that answers my specific question.
My raw video from my camera is mp4 (h.264). I understand that h.264 is not good to edit with, so I have a few options. I use a macbook pro for editing so I have been toying around with prores proxy for editing and it makes a difference on RT playback and rendering while editing, so that's good. When I get ready to output my movie after editing, I relink my project back to the original h.264 source files and that seems to work fine.
I'm wondering if that's not the right workflow though. Should I transcode the h.264 into prores HQ or LT and then ALSO to proxy, edit with proxy and then relink my project back to the HQ or LT files to output? Or is linking back to my source h.264 files and outputing the right way to go?
Since the original files must be in the best possible quality that I'm going to get (since they're my original clips), I assume that relinking to them right before output is the way to go but I really don't know much about codecs to know if I'm missing something.

Thanks for your response. I'm shooting with a Sanyo FH1, mostly in 1080p, but I've scaled back to 720 since 1080 was overkill for what I'm doing to save some space.
The thing I don't quite understand yet is the issue with pointing my project back to the source files after all the editing is finished with prores proxy and just before output. That way, FCP would only have to uncompress the source files to render for final output only one time (besides the initial transcoding), albeit, probably longer than it would be for prores. I'm sold on proxy because it was so much faster to edit with than h.264 and I didn't have to keep any video files after I was finished except my source files....trying to budget hard drive space. I transcoded one file a while back to prores but the file size was more than I wanted to deal with since I only edit on my macbook pro so I didn't try to edit with it. Like you said, maybe just converting to prores and dealing with the space juggling would be the best way to go, or try prores LT to see how the quality is.
Does converting from h.264 to prores buy me any quality or a better final result, or just a cleaner workflow? Don't misread my questions, I'm not arguing, just trying to understand from you guys that know a lot more about this than I do. Making my living as a developer, it's just ingrained in me to understand this one

Major Workflow for Sports Team- H.264 and ProRes

I need some help hammering through my media management and workflow...
I'm trying to create an effiecient workflow to work with a sports team.
Currently I'm recording my games with a BlackMagic H.264 Pro Recorder, 720p 60fps, creating a 8-14 gb .mp4 file. (I will keep these files on a seperate hard drive as an archive of the entire season's games.)
Next, I need to take these .mp4 files into Final Cut Pro X, to cut clips of the "highlights" of the game and "individual highlights" of eacher player. Imagine each game containing 4-5 highlights for each player, creating a huge reel by the end of the season.
My plan is then to create a new event, importing the h.264 media file, creating ins and outs of the highlights, and drop them into to each players individual highlight sequence/project.
Example - I just imported 5 highlight clips for a total 00:02:45:00 (2minutes45seconds)
Now, these files are going to imported, rendered and transcoded for Apple ProRes 422. Are these files now ProRes, or are they Proxy ProRes, referencing the original H.264 media?
My concern is that I'm going to quadrupling my media when the H.264 to ProRes takes place in Final Cut Pro X.
My final output/export will likely be back to 720p 60fps H.264 .mp4 for iPad and other digital formats.
Am I making sense? Does anyone have any suggestions for improvement?

Rather, keyword each player, then you'll have a keyword collection for each player in the browser. You can have separate keyword collections for each player and for each game and for each type of action and group the each type of keyword collection into a folder.

D7000 H.264 to ProRes - Ridiculously long conversion times

When converting the D7000 footage from h.264 to ProRes for editing in Final Cut, it's taking absolutely ridiculously long to do so, even with short clips. I primarily use the Canon 7D. When converting 7D footage with those same output settings, it's acceptable the time it takes. But, with the D7000's footage, it's then astronomically longer of a process.
Does anyone know why? I'm assuming it has to do with the higher compression of the Nikon footage, but I wanted to see if there is anymore light to be shed on this.

Shooting on the D7000, I used Image Capture to import a 2 minute 1080p24 clip that was 325 megs,
Compressor processed it to ProRes422LT using 7 of my 8 cores in about 7 minutes to a file that is now 1.2 gigs.
So, roughly, I'm looking at 6-8 times real time to process H,264 to ProResLT into a file that is roughly 4x the size of the original.
The image is lovely but shooting through my Nikkor primes has several negative aspects, most notably, today's autofocus lenses have focus barrels that go through the entire range in 120 to 200 degrees. My ancient manual Nikkors had focus rings that used 200 to more than 360 degrees of rotation to go from minimum focual distance to infinity. This, in combination with a split image rangefinder or microprism, meant precision focus was easy to achieve on the older lenses. Today's lenses have tolerances that are too tight for manual focus, merely letting go of the focusing barrel pushes the lens past the exact focus point. Of course, a precision focusing aid is not an option on any of Nikon's "professional" cameras these days.
Auto focus tracking while shooting is unreliable and unprofessionally lame. Manually tracking focus while shooting requires a very good monitor hood/magnifier. This requirement alone makes the whole DSLR video thing totally stupid and completely amateurish. Even though I scored a new camera, I'm stuck with this lame process because some pinhead at my company has suddenly decided bokeh is cool.
Why doesn't Nikon just adapt their CMOS, lens mount and basic controls to a dedicated, fully professional digital cinema camera?

H.264/AVC Mac issue

Hello. I use Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014 to make MP4s on a Mac. In the past, my Quicktime video Inspector would say the format of my MP4 was H.264. It would play on any computer.
Recently, AME has begun creating MP4s that say the format is AVC, not H.264.
Now when a Windows user loads the video, it asks them to activate Quicktime. It used to just play automatically in Windows Media Player.
I can't find a setting or preference anywhere in AME to change that.
Can anyone give me some advice? I realize that H.264 and AVC are basically the same thing, but I don't like my Windows users to have this issue.

@DanFCarr may have a different situation, but for me I am actually using Dataton Watchout, which will support native playback of H.264-format MP4's, but only non-native, non-optimized decoding of AVC-format MP4's, and only with the right version of Quicktime and codecs installed. Wondering how to get AME to create an MP4 file with "H.264 Format" rather than "AVC Coding" Format (which seems like it may be related to H.264 Media Subtype AVC1?)

Urgent Please - Receiving Transaction Processor Issue

We are on 11.5.10. I am trying to create PO receipts using the interface program "Receiving Transaction Processor". I inserted data into the rcv_headers_interface and rcv_transactions_interface tables. As this dta is for contract labor, i am assuming that there is no need to insert data into shipment_related interface table. Following shows the insert statement I made sure that I am running the process from the correct org (the org that i used in the filed destination_oprganization field). But still the process completes normally but po_interface_errors has a record with error message as :
"RVTSH-189: Subroutine rvtshiline() returned error

When is the h.264 bit rate issue going to be fixed?

If you export a project in After Effects using the H.264 codec the file you export does not have the correct bitrate. Meaning if you export a video at 1mbps compression rate you will not get a video that has 1mbps bitrate. This has been an issue since day one along with header issues in the .mp4 file. Please do not tell me not to use AE to create H.264, this is what we used and works fine in CS4. The same issues arrises when you use Adobe Media Encoder CS5.
Does anyone have a solution or anyone from Adobe have any suggestions?

I believe I have found out the actual issue. CS5 will not render a project above the lowest bitrate of the source video for H.264. So if you have a video file at 300kbps it cannot be rendered above that point. This is a problem when you understand how bitrates\codecs work. Not all codecs need an extremely high bitrate in order for the quality of the content to look good. We use the TechSmith screen capture codec a lot. This codec is create for screen capturing, it provides a low bitrate file which is small in size and easy to handle. We have been using this combination with the CS package since before it was CS. The videos we procude look great in CS4 but awful in CS5. When using mediainfo to check out a video file compressed in CS5 it gives us a Bit Rate and a Normal Bit Rate. Normal bit rate is what is requested, say 1mbps and the actual Bit Rate is what the source material was.
In any case the video files look like crap because a 250kbps .mp4 looks awful compaired to a 250kbps video using the TSCC codec. So yeah, not using CS5 and most likely won't be doing any more upgrades in a while. I'm responsible for purchasing over 10 licenses. Just wanted to let Adobe know they won't be getting that money again for a while until they figure out there compression issues.

Changing Project Format from DSLR H.264 to ProRes

I started a project using raw H.264 video on the timeline from a DSLR.
I got half way through the project and encountered problems with the raw
H.264 footage. (Editing in FCP7)
To resolve the problem I used Mpeg Streamclip to convert all of the clips
to ProRes. Now all of the clips are in ProRes
I was able to edit a large part of the Sequence with the DSLR H.264 formated clips..
Now half of the project is finished with the H.264 clips and I do not want to
loose my work and start over.
Is there a way to recreate or convert the project keeping all edits (and timelines) and
replacing the existing H.264 clips with newly created identical clips
in ProRes?

If the file names of the converted clips are identical to the original clips, and you media manage an "offline" prorres version, you should be able to reconnect to your prores clips. If this isn't clear or you have problems, post back and I'll try and make this clearer.

Fastest Converter for h.264 to ProRes

So long story short, we'll be shooting a few videos with some Nikon D600s and bringing them into FCP7 for overnight edits on location with MacBook Pros. I usally use Compressor to convert the footage over to ProRes but since we will be shooting a lot of video and the edit times are very tight (overnight) I'm trying to find out if anyone has found a converter that can transcode the video faster than Compressor does? Runnng some small tests Compressor is going to be a bit too slow for our turnaround time, but I understand we may have to make due. Was just checking if anyone has found a converter or workflow that is noticably faster than Compressor?

So just an update for ya'll since I did the tests. I ran a bunch of tests with my i7 macbook pro (on 10.8.5) using a 2gig h.264 clip and found that it took 29:22 min to render a pro res clip in compressor 4, and 29:24 in compressor 3. Then after setting up the Qmaster as decribed in the doc and setting it for 7 instances it took 29:15 for compressor 4 and 29:33 in compressor 3 (strangly longer). So Qmaster made no diffrence for me at all.
Mpeg Streamclip did it in 26:30 so a bit faster. But the solution we're going to use is to render in the DaVinci Resolve lite which renderd it in 15min! The GPU rendering in Davinci really helped and I didn't have to put any Gama correction on the clip (for some reason compressor changes the gamma a bit).

Convert h.264 to prores

Hi -
I am not clear as to whether my clips are converted to Prores after import because the clip CODECs on the clip browser window still shows H.264 Codec after I select Transcoding:"Create optimized media". So in effect, even though I optimized some of the clips, i can't tell which clips are optimized and which aren't because they all still show as H.264.
My clips are .MOV and imported from a Canon DSLR at 50fps 1280x720 (So i can conform to 24fps for slow motion)
Any thoughts gratefully received. thanks

ok thanks - it takes me to the "high quality media" folder under "transcoded media" and is 205MB large vs the original clip which was about 80MB.
so i assume it presumably did the conversion, and if so how come the clip window still shows it as an H.264 clip?

Urgent Request: Help With Websheet Issues

This is an urgent request for help. I am currently developing a websheet demo and have run into several puzzling issues.
I am using APEX 4.0.1. My organization will upgrade to 4.0.2 in several months.
Issue 1:
I am trying to create a file annotation to be associated with several rows in a data grid I created. When I browse to the .xls file to be uploaded and then click "Apply", a stripped wait bar appears indicating that the file is being uploaded. Or so I thought. Instead, that stripped bar sits there FOREVER. After 30 minutes waiting for a very simple two-row .xls file (first row is the column headers followed by a row of data - simple integers), I finally clicked the "Cancel" button. The file was not uploaded.
I have repeated this several times, and even closed/re-opened my browser. Same results. Even tried a simple .txt file. Still no good.
I am running IE 8.x I even tried the same thing in FireFox 3.6.1. Same behavior.
Issue 2:
I also created a Note annotation. After entering some simple text (about 10 words) and clicking the "Apply" button, the page displays the following error:

I then click the previous breadcrumb link which take me back to my data grid I then click the pencil "Edit" icon for the row for which this Note is associated and, to my surprise, the Note with my entered text is there. APEX did, in fact, create it. However, not without displaying this error message which I'm sure would be rather intimidating to our end users trying to do this. this same behavior occurs when trying to modify an already existing Note. I receive the same message. However, the modifications were enacted.
As with Issue 1, this same behavior is seen with FireFox as well.
Issue 3:
After saving my Data Grid as an "Alternative Default Report", I see the Note annotation I created associated with the report row. However, when I hover my mouse on the Note icon, all that displays is the first 4 words or so, about 15 characters, followed by a 3-dot ellipsis. The remaining 10+ characaters are hidden. What good is that?
Is there aimit to the number of characaters that can be placed in a Note Annotation? I have not seen this characater limit mentioned anywhere in the online APEX docs. I realize that I probably would not want a PhD disseration placed in a Note, but just 30 or so characaters? That seems awfully skimmpy.
As before, I'm seeing this same strange behavior in FireFox 3.6.1 as with IE 8.x
Issue 4:
When editing text in a Section, I attempt to re-size the text with a larger font size (say, from 10 to 14). I click the "Apply" button, but the resulting text stays the same size. I am unable to re-size the font in a section.
Even more puzzling is that the OBE "Building a Websheet In APEX 4.0" example application (http://st-curriculum.oracle.com/obe/db/apex/r40/websheets/websheets_ll.htm) which takes me step-by-step in creating a websheet app shows that one can do all of the things mentioned in the above three issues. So, then, how is this tutorial able to do all these things but I am not?
Are these issues fixed in the 4.0.2 patch? I checked the online list of bug fixes for this patch and, although several do relate to websheets, none address the above three issues.
As mentioned, I am trying to prepare for this websheet demo and would really appreciate some quick advice or suggestions.

I do understand your comment about not being able to stylize the Title text. Still, I am wondering why I do NOT see the HTML code in my own environment here at work. Yet on apex.oracle.com I see the code. This is why I made the comment in my last post. Seeing this code where there shouldn't be any code surprised me. So, why is this code not showing up for me here?
With respect to my file upload issue, as mentioned in my original post, I am NOT able to upload a quite simple .xls file as a file annotation to be associated with a row in a data grid I had created. However, I AM able to upload this exact same .xls file to a section on a page without problem.
In my websheet app on apex.oracle.com, navigate to Data -> Data Grids, click on the data grid "MAD Data Upload", select the report "2. Symbols Report with Annotations", click the pencil icon next to (I believe) the 2nd row which currentl displays a link, a note, and several tags. Then attempt to upload a simple .xls Excel file. The one I tried has 2 rows, a header row with 5 column headers, and a 2nd row with integer values for those 5 columns. That's it. After browsing to my file and clicking the "Apply" button, I get a stripped progress bar that sits there FOREVER. After about 10 minutes I gave up waiting. I figured that, even over the web, a simple two row Excel file should have been uploaded after ten minutes. My connection is pretty fast. I get no errors. Also there is no file.
One more thing ... Remember my Issue 2 in which I was attempting to modify a previously created Note annotation and received a weird error (see my original post above)? Well, I attempted to do this on apex.oracle.com.
In the same Data Grid row that you navigated to above, scroll to the very bottom and you will see my single Note Annotation. I attempted to modify this. I clicked the "Edit" link, typed in my changes, and clicked "Apply". This time, instead of receiving that weird error message, I received a more intelligent (though still weird) error message:
Not Found
Sorry!The page requested was not found.
And, just as with the truly weird message I would consistently receive in my own environment here at work, the text changes I had made to the Note were, in fact, preserved because when I re-look at my Note Annotation in the Data Grid, the Note does show the changes I had made.
Needless to emphasize, these errors would likely freak out end users who are adding Note Annotations to a Data Grid they had created. After all, these are the intended audience of a websheet app not a developer like me who is used to seeing such weird messages.
Would you know what all this about?

URGENT!! Nokia 6300 issue please help

Hi, Basically I turned my Nokia 6300 off the other night and when I turned it back on it starts up as normal, However when I try to put my security code in and press OK it just freezes and wont let me into my phone. I havent forgotten my security code as I have used this code plenty of times so it must be a phone issue. Ive tried various ways for example: putting in a different sim or trying it without the sim or removing the battery etc but the problems the same!! Please can anyone help??

Have you tried removing the memory card too?
It sounds like the OS has become corrupted to me. I've had it happen on a 6233.
Unfortunately if this is the case there is no way for the user to recover it from this state. If it can't boot then it can't be reset or have it's firmware reloaded by the user. It can't even be backed up.
Your only option is to take the phone to a nokia care point and they can reload it's firmware. Sadly all of your info, files, programs will be wiped from the phone.

Urgent help - 3.1.2 issue!?

Hi guys,
Plugged my iPhone through USB for only the 2nd time since I got it (2nd hand though) and iTunes offered a 3.1.2 upgrade.
Decided to go for it and everything seemed fine. Backed everything up (apparently) and downloaded 3.1.2.
Shortly after I got the 'iTunes' screen and nothing was working. Closed iTunes and started it again. I get a message saying it's in recovery mode and needs to restore.
Hopefully I won't lose anything and do actually have everything backed up but after waiting for restore to do it's business I get an error message - think it's the same error 28 other people are having.
And that's it...
Been reading around and a few people think it's a hardware issue but I don't see how that can be possible. I have had no problems AT ALL with the iPhone right up until I accepted 3.1.2 and now I have this.
What's the best plan of action? Will I lose everything (Apps, contacts, photos, etc)?

EDIT - Just checked again. It's coming up with an error 1604. The iTunes logo stays on but when iTunes says "preparing iPhone to restore" the screen flickers and turns black.
Really need this sorted asap (obviously).
All I wanted to do was put some music on it...

Still leads ma back to square one.
Tried restoring in DFU mode (never got the iTunes logo). Tried it with the SIM removed (had a white screen instead of the black screen).
It's all the same - useless!!
Got a feeling my contacts may not have been backed up (possibly because it only seems to have backed up those two apps) so I'm not looking forward to getting this working now as I'm expecting to have lost a whole load of important contacts that will be very difficult to replace.
On the plus side, I'm still within warranty so will speak to some 'geniuses' and probably come home with a nice new phone - but without my contacts!
Happily willing to try any suggestions, anyone?
