i dont think these board support SATA II drives.. and i have the latest bios so whats wrong???
thankyou so much!

Hi guys,
I've got exactly the same problem - and, you're not alone - there are lots of people out there with nForce4 boards and SATA-II drives that do not work in SATA-II mode.   I just built a new system using the Neo4 Platinum, Athlon 64 X2, and a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250 GB SATA-II drive.  I've talked to MSI and Maxtor, both of wich have no solution for this particular problem.
The Maxtor drive will only work in SATA-I mode (1.5Gb/s) by manually changing the "J4" jumper.  Otherwise, the system locks when running in SATA-II mode.  I have the system running fine at SATA-I.  I was able to install Windows XP, and everything runs great -- except for the SATA-II mode.
On the Maxtor site (https://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/popup_adp.php?p_faqid=2685&p_created=1136595488) Maxtor acknowledges a problem with nForce 4 and Maxtor drives.
This same issue occurred with some previous drives, which a firmware update corrected this issue.  However, with the drive I have, it has the latest firmware according to Maxtor support.  I'm still waiting for a solution to this one... Perhaps is simply a matter of a BIOS and/or driver update from NVIDIA.  I've read that some figure it's a problem with NCQ... but, there is no solution - yet.  I'll keep you posted if I find out any more.
Good luck!

Oh ok, well that was what the test said prior to reformatting the hard drive. Now, it doesn't find any trouble no matter how many times I run it. That's what has me so confused, everything seems to check out and yet...I can't do anything, not even install the software!

  • New Internal Hard Drive and Clean Install: Errors, Frustration and Hopelessness

    First Off:
Macbook 13" (late 2009) ... It was running Mountain Lion 10.8.5 with 2 gigs of memory and 160gig stock hard drive.
I started this process almost a week ago and despite numerous attempts every night I have had no luck. I appologize if the details here are fuzzy, my head is spinning after reading dozens of threads and attempting multiple solutions to each error I've received and i cant remember everything I've tried so far...
I got my new memory in the mail first, upgraded to 4 gigs and everything works fine with that..
Next came my new Seagate Momentus 750 gb 7200 rpm SATA 3gb/s 16Mb Internal Hard Drive.
Using this guide: http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/17/make-bootable-os-x-10-8-mountain-lion-usb-install -drive/ (and cross checking other guides) I ended up creating a bootable external drive using my 160gb External Firewire drive for my clean install to my new hard drive. So far so good.
I then shut down the computer, removed the old internal hard drive, installed the new, restarted the computer holding option key and booted up using the External Hard Drive, and the install software started fine. Note: I have attempted to re-erase the drive so many times without luck that I cant remember if I actually successfully erased the drive originally to begin with the installation, but either way I started the OSX reinstall and it got almost all the way finished before it gave me the error message:
"Install failed. Mac OS X Lion couldn’t be installed, because the disk (volume name) is damaged and can’t be repaired. Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
restarting of course did nothing, it repeatedly gave me error messages and made me quit installation...
Disk Utility isnt getting me anywhere, im either getting errors like:
"POSIX reports: the operation couldnt be completed. device no configured"
it wont allow me to erase the drive or partition the drive
"Disk Erase failed with the error: File System Formatter Failed"
and everytime the drive fails to erase or partition, it disappears from the list of drives on the left of the disk utility screen and i have to restart the computer for it to reappear for a second try. Typically the volume under the drive is greyed out and says that it is unmounted.
Ive zapped the PRAM.... and Ive done other things that I cant quite remember right now because my brain is boiling from reading too many **** threads on multiple devices....
    halp.
    halp me plase.

    So funny story...
While writing this discussion I had to come to the computer and try to erase the drive so I could see the error code for reference. The erase didnt work as usual but I wrote the error code down here.
I also could not remember the error code for partitioning the drive so I attempted that as well so I could write down the code, and this time it magically partitioned successfully! The only thing I did differently was that I didn't rename the partition because i figured it wouldn't matter anyway. Since the partition was successful, I attempted the Reinstall of ML and it magically worked!!
I dont know what the **** happened but ive been attempting this install every night for like 3 hours since Monday and this is the first time it went through... for no apparent reason?
    Ghosts? Magic? Full Moon?
    we may never know...
    Thanks anyways guys!

They already damaged you Mac by fooling with the BootCamp partition without knowing what they were doing. I wouldn't suggest haveing them help you do anything.
Here is the article that describes the Recovery HD: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
First, see if you can boot into the Recovery HD. Restart and hold down cmd-r until you see the gray screen. It should boot into Recovery. If your Mac shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, it will boot into Internet Recovery if it cannot boot into the Recovery HD on the hard drive.
They should have tried this at the store.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

Are you logging in as the administrator and disabling anti-virus? Is it a S/N issue. If so, you may have an upgrade version and need the S/N from the previous version to register Acrobat. We need to know the message as mentioned by TSN if we are to help further.

  • Sometimes cannot start PC: problem with Hitachi SATA Hard drive and K7N2G-ILSR

I have major problem with my 160Gb SATA Hitachi hard drive and my MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard.  Sometimes the PC can be started, sometimes it cannot.
After I installed a clean build of Windows XP Pro SP1 onto my new hard drive (as the only hard drive in my PC) and install all the necessary drivers, the system runs smoothly.  However, after about 2 to 3 weeks, sometimes when I start the PC, it cannot detect the hard drive and hence it claimes that it cannot find any VMI Pool Data (i.e. no OS detected).  What makes it really horrible is that, it is like the lottery everytime when I start the PC.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  The highest record was 8 consecutive failures (by resetting or by turning the power off and on again) before I can start the machine properly.  Also, the system sometimes just crashes in the middle of operating.
I have already sent the hard drive back to Hitachi.  Got the same model of hard drive back as replacement, but the replacement has the same problem, except with the replacement drive the PC can be started eventually after many tries, while with the previous drive it is possible that the PC cannot be started until after a few days later.
Also, it seems that my drive can detect either SATA hard drive or PATA hard drive, but not both.  (If I leave my old PATA drive connect in the primary IDE channel, Windows cannot detect the new SATA drive.)
Is my motherboard faulty?  Can it only use PATA drive?
My PC's spec is as follows:
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512Mb PC3200 SDRAM (set to run at 166MHz)
Hitachi 160Gb SATA Hard drive on 1st SATA channel (Model #HDS722516VLSA80)
Sony DVD+-RW drive and Panasonic DVD-ROM drive on secondary IDE channel
    Use onboard video (GeForce MX)
US Robotech V92 internal PCI modem
    SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Player soundcard
    Onboard audio disabled
    300W PSU
OS is Windows XP Pro SP1 (with all latest security patches up to date)

    that is not entirly correct.
many harddrives just come with different ways to connect them.
the only sata drives i now that spins faster is western digital raptors 10k rpm.
all other is running at 7200rpm.
    older drives run at 5400rpm
Yes to get the full benefit of RAID, the Raptors are the way to go.Anything else, no significant difference.

You don't. But I don't recall suggesting that you not use

  • SATA External drives and G4 iBook

Hi, this is my first post!
I have some probably really silly questions, but I just can't find the answers by googling, so please bear with me
I have a 12" 1.33GHz iBook G4 last PPC model and a Mac Mini 1.5GHz again, last PPC model.
I'd like to get some external hard drives for them. I know they'll take IDE (PATA) drives, but these are getting to be rare and expensive(!) as SATA drives take over. Here are my questions:
    1) Will a SATA external drive work with my PPC G4 gear?
    2) Do I need to buy a special enclosure for the SATA/SATAII drives that is different from the regular FW/USB IDE enclosures?
    3) Can I connect the SATA enclosure to my PPC iBook and PPC Mac Mini with just regular FW or USB or do I need some kind of adapter? For example, I see this Addonics USB 2.0 to eSATA adapter:
    http://www.addonics.com/products/io/aau2esa.asp
but I don't know if that's just for SATA enclosures that have the special eSATA plug or is it relevant if all I want is to connect through FW or USB?
    Thank you for your answers!

    Thank you for that link.
Here's what I mean by "they get you":
the enclosure you linked to is $58.98 after discount. The shipping is $14.45 for a total of $74.43.
For comparison here's a link to an IDE Firewire and USB 2.0 enclosure:
    http://store.4linkcomm.com/gax-3506c.html
Found it on dealmac.com - total price $24.00 with FREE shipping.
FURTHERMORE, if I am not mistaken, the Cooldrive drive you linked to has only one FW port, whereas the Galaxy Metal Gearbox I linked to has 2 FW ports - this means I can daisy chain the Galaxy, whereas I cannot do the same with the Cooldrive drive. For my needs, the Galaxy is the better product, quite apart from price, purely on technical merits (obviously, for someone who uses SATA drives in a SATA enabled computer, the opinion may be different).
Now, regarding cost, this is a $50 difference. I have found SATA hard drives to be cheaper than IDE drives, and more available. However, once you factor in the $50 difference in price the SATA package becomes VASTLY more expensive. After all, you can get a whole 400GB IDE drive for $70 - so $50 is not a trivial expense (and the 400GB is a late model Seagate 7200RPM with a 16MB cache).
So, how do they "get you" on the SATA FW enclosures? Well, the way they get you is that I can buy 3 IDE FW drives (which I can also daisychain) for only ONE SATA FW (which I cannot daisychain) - and still have money left over ($24x3=$72).
Again, I have searched for SATA enclosures with FW, and have found them to be extremely expensive - of course, it's possible that cheaper ones exist and I simply have not found them.
Before I posted my question, I did a search of the forum, the fora on other mac oriented sites, and a general google search - and frankly, I was surprised this exact topic (i.e. OEM SATA drives + enclosures hooked to G4 machines) hasn't really come up (there's a lot about internal SATA drives)... you'd think it would be a hot topic ... BWDIK.
