Urgent - I think I just lost everything on my MacBook Pro. Hard drive won't mount and booting up shows "no" symbol

My MacBook Pro (13" mid 2010, Yosemite) doesn't feel like booting up. It gives me the no symbol after the progress bar is about 1/4 of the way through.
Additionally, it won't mount in the Recovery HD. It shows up as disk0s6 and clicking Mount does nothing. Can't seem to mount it in the Terminal either.
The disk partition is encrypted, so unfortunately I can't pull the hard drive out of my MBP and pull the stuff off it with my PC.
I tried First Aid - "no problems found" (such LIES!)
I tried PRAM - didn't work
I tried Verbose Mode - went fine for the first minute, then hung for a while before returning to the "No" screen and in the bottom right corner "Still waiting for root drive".
I tried SMC - didn't work
Most recently I did install rEFInd - which is a boot manager. I was afraid it screwed up the EFI partition -seemingly not, as it will boot to Recovery and external drives.
The data still seems to be there, but the OS is having trouble accessing it.
Do you know what would be causing this? I really need that data back :/

It appears I can unlock the partition, using diskutil via the Terminal (diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume <UUID> -passphrase <passphrase>).
However the volume doesn't have a UUID. It lists the partition type as "FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF" (which is a UUID) but using that doesn't work.
Additionally when I use diskutil coreStorage list, it comes up with nothing. I'm at a loss here, the partition doesn't even know it's own UUID or that it's encrypted. It seems quite damaged to me but I don't have the slightest idea why, as I CAN boot to it and enter the password but it will stop at the "no" symbol part of the way along.

  • My MacBook Pro hard drive died and under warranty a new one installed (hence lost everything).  I have updates outstanding in App Store but can't update due to Apple Id under a foreign name I have tried every possible angle. Stuck!

    Hi,
I think I know the answer but just to be sure.
To update outstanding Apps in the App Store do I really need to have the person who purchased or downloaded them to sign in?
How can I remove his Apple ID altogether as this person holds no connection to me at all.
His Apple ID has come with my newly installed hard drive (works carried out under warranty), so I'm
    assuming it is 2nd hand.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to erase the HDD and start over by reinstalling the OS and setting the Mac up as a new one with your own Apple ID.

  • After re-installing my MacBook Pro hard drive, I lost my Firefox/Mozilla 'top banner' (red ,yellow and orange in color) and with it my ability to down load via a small tab located top right on it's bar. How do I get this function back??

Recently I found it necessary to re-install my entire operating system, and I lost my ability to down load streaming videos. I am an artist almost 70 yrs. old, and am not very computer proficient which is why I purchased a MacBook Pro. I used Firefox/Mozilla to do downloading because it was easy. When I brought my system back up I found that the top 'Firefox banner' had changed from red, orange and yellow in color to shades of gray. With this change found that I no longer had the download 'tab' to click on to initiate downloads (located top right on the Firefox top section).
I've tried re-installing Firefox and Antbar download helper but am still not able to download. How do I get the download capability back again???? ......roxor999

Your storage device is probably faulty.  It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.

  • G-Raid external hard drive won't mount -- have tried almost everything!

My iMac (Intel , OSX 10.4.11) has been happily working with my G-Raid external hard drive for over a year. But now, after the computer cord was disconnected yesterday, it refuses to mount the G-Raid or recognize it anywhere. Can't find it in the Disk Utilities or under "About this mac -- Firewire." Called Apple service and tried everything the agent recommended...PRAM diagnostic reboot, power surge, plugging, unplugging...nothing helped. The problem isn't with the G-Raid, which works fine plugged into my old Powerbook with the same firewire. Grateful for any help, as I really need the G-Raid -- it's got all my projects, music, photos....

Can you plug it in with a USB cable on your iMac? That might get you through your crisis and even resurrect your Firewire connection. Accidentally breaking the connection on my external Firewire drives happens too often as the connector doesn't make a snug fit compared to USB. It's not a problem unless there was something in your buffers at the time the connection was broken. You may need to Repair the drive using Disk Utility when it eventually reconnects or all may be well without more intervention.

  • Is it safe to just store my purchased iTunes movies in the iTunes cloud rather than filling up my Macbook Pros hard drive?

Is it safe to just store my purchased Itunes movies in the Itunes cloud rather than filling up the Macbook Pro's hard drive with HD content?

Not safe, no. The movie's owner can remove a movie at any time, which does happen from time to time, making it impossible to re-download later. You should always keep a backup copy of any app or content that you care about.
    Regards.

  • I think I just lost everything...

I accidentally unplugged my external harddrive while i was working on a project. I immediately plugged it back in and the project seemed to be ok. I closed the project and re-opened it and was met with this message:
The file "__" can not be found {or something like that} and I could click OK or ignore all. There were many.
Now my project is blank, and everything I had done lies in the trash. Is there any way to bring it back the way it was? I had been working on it and saving it just fine.

David is referring to the backup file iMovie stores inside the project. Here a description of how you can (hopefully) recover the project:

  • I just got a brand new 13" Macbook pro with Lion and the battery life is terrible. i just got a brand new macbook pro 13in a few weeks ago and everything is fine except the battery life is terrible!

i have seen many other threads about this, but i just want to know if anyone has found a fix that actually works? or do i just need to wait for apple to send a fix in their next update?

Suppose you elaborate on what you are doing with the MBP that makes the battery life terrible.

  • My WD hard drive won't "mount" it shows in disk utility but can't be repaired. I'm thinking this is a software issue since the disk is being recognized.

    I
I have a WD drive that won't "mount". Tried repairing, turning off and back on, unplugging and nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

The WD Passport has no independent power supply, relying instead on getting power from a USB port on the computer. AS the drive ages it can need more power to spin the platter and many USB ports on notebook cannot provid that much.
Anther issue is the WD drive itself. WD uses an odd proproprietary formatting scheme that makes the drive not always behave like typical Mac drives.
If the drive contains nothing you need to access, use Disk Utility to reformat it to "Macintosh Extended (Journalled)"
If the drive contains important data, there are a couple of inexpensive ways to get more power to it:
    1) Get a "Y" conenctor cable like this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/USB2AYMBPB/
It draws power from two USB ports and ofter that is enough to make the drive work.
    2) Get a powered USB Hub:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
It has its own power brick and that is usually enough to get an older USB external drive recognized.

  • Lost iPhoto when Apple replaced damaged MacBook Pro hard drive

My son and daughter-in-law recently had to replace their MacBook Pro hard drive. Apple did the replacement, but they got it back without iPhoto. Isn't that standard software when you purchase a MacBook Pro? Shouldn't it be part of the replacement, too?

If your computer shipped with Lion, follow the directions here to redownload the iLife apps:
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • Hard Drive Won't Mount--URGENT

I swapped out hard drive on my iMac and put in a hard drive with no OS. I'm trying to install a legal retail version of OS X Panther but when I get to the Select a Destination step no destination, i.e. my hard drive, appears. I know the hard drive is hooked up because through disk utility I erased and zeroed the disk. However, the hard drive will not mount in disk utility which I believe it must do to install. This hard drive is compatible with the iMac so I don't know the problem. Firmware is update. I need help ASAP.

Ok, now I tried formatting it as extended and extended (journaled) and the disk shows up in select destination volume but with a red ! saying "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume." I tried repairing disk permissions, didn't work. Any ideas? Thanks
