Urgent Iphone with new laptop help needed!

ok so i did a fresh reinstall of leopard on my macbook without thinking about syncing my iphone.
now whenever i plug my iphone into my laptop it thinks its a camera and opens image capture and asks me what photos i want to download off it. It wont show up on the desktop or in itunes.
I have all the music, apps etc backed up on my machine. i do not however have backups of my contacts!
i have a backup of the iphone in itunes, but i cant get to a point of restoring the phone to the back up i have, as plugging it in does nothing.
there is a setting to erase all content and settings on the iphone, will this render it as if i had just bought it out of the shop, meaning i can resync with my 'new' laptop?

I managed to fix it myself in the end, with a slight work around. once i had reinstalled leopard, i noticed a utility called migration assistant. I used that to transfer my old user account off my time machine and restore all the settings etc. now my iphone syncs with my laptop again. hoorah!
Interestingly, i tried the migration assistant when installing leopard (the whole 'setting up your computer' process) but it refused to do anything. I would tell it what to restore from time machine, it would accept, and then sit there with an empty progress bar that did not move all night. And i mean all night!

    I am a new, rather unhappy, customer of Lenovo UK as of this week, via a dealer called www.saveonlaptops.co.uk .
    I'm terribly disappointed to have had such a bad experience...
    I purchased a Lenovo G570 (product code M5143UK)  from the above vendor on their website using my credit card on 17th July 2011...
    I eagerly awaited delivery on 19th July 2011.
    Unfortunately, upon setting up the laptop and switching it on, it became quite clear that there are hardware issues with the laptop.
    It took me 3 hours to get the laptop working, after it repeatedly attempted to install/configure software and OS updates and repeatedly failed midway through often shutting down of its own accord too early to allow update to complete.
    3 hours after, I had got it working, but immediately noticed how SLOW the laptop is...The 3 year old Dell laptop I sold last week ran much much faster than this Lenovo ever has.
    The boot time averages over 2 minutes just to get to login screen, and applications are unacceptably slow loading/running.
    I had spoken with Lenovo UK support whom suggested that it should run no slower with a retail version of Windows 7 64-bit OS on it, which at the consent of them, I duly installed.  Unfortunately, a further 4 hours of waiting for repeatedly failing OS updates to install took place, before this version of Windows 7 (clean install) ran even worse than the original OS image. 
    Lenovo UK support have said that I need to return the laptop to the vendor to be assessed, but the vendor is currently refusing to accept any come back as such, and saying that due to the clean install carried out (at the consent of your support guys remember) that they will not return and swap for a brand new like-for-like laptop.
     I have been assured previously by Lenovo that clearing a partition off of the HDD and applying a fresh install will not invalidate warranty...!!!!!!!!!
    I have never received such poor service from a hardware vendor or a how manufacturer, especially seeing as I had fully researched the brand/model I was to purchase for weeks prior to final purchase.
    I am writing to your goodself in the hope that you can arrange for a brand new laptop of the same spec to be sent to me, and arrange for the courier to collect the faulty one at the same time to stop me being without a laptop.
    The vendor has been rude, unhelpful, dishonoring towards me and Lenovo and I wish I had not approached them to purchase this laptop.  The price though was £80 odd cheaper than with Lenovo direct.
    All I want is a non faulty laptop to last me 5 years before i change for a new Lenovo (if the service is good!) model.

    It's regrettable to read about your experiences to date, obviously not an invigourating experience, reads very much like a pillar to post scenario
    Firstly; a clean windows install does not invalidate the warranty regardless of what the reseller says. The warranty covers the hardware, unless explicity stated and purchased there is no warranty on software whatsoever.
    IMHO your first point of contact should have been the retailer to ask if they were in a position to offer a possible solution. Should they then have at some point instructed you to contact Lenovo support you would be in a stronger position to argue that they should resolve the issue. Whatever, you did the right thing by contacting support. Did support issue you with a call number which you noted down and could share? Against the call number there will be notes logged by the service rep. and you could ask the retailer to call and validate the instructions you were given by support.
    As this is a peer to peer forum, provided by Lenovo in order that members may seek assistance from others and share their experiences, there is a Lenovo presence which deals with some of the broader issues, it's not always possible for them to assist on all individual issues. Members will certainly be glad to and be able to assist you diagnose any possible hardware fault with the system which would then hopefully provide you with the facts you need to hopefully reach a speedy resolution.
    You're probably pretty miffed at the moment and don't want to read the following, but it's meant well.
    As a first step I'd like to suggest downloading the mediacreator from this site and use the media you create to test the system's hard drive, please let us know the results.

    i currently have my iphone synced to a PC at work but I have now purchased a new Laptop at home. Over the weekend I connected my iphone at home and downloaded the new update.. However I lost all my videos, films, music and apps.. So when I arrived at work this morning I had to re-sync my phone to retrieve them all. HELP!! How do i now get all of the above onto my home laptop as I no longer wish to use my work PC.. And don't want to lose all of my purchased items every time I connect at home.. (i am using the same account)

    As for the contacts, set up one contact and one event in your calendar before you connect your iphone for the first time to Vista. Then your contacts and calendar will be merged with your first sync.

    My old laptop crashed and I want to re-establish my iPhone with a new laptop. I had no chance for backing up just before the crash, so I need some other way of transfering ALL files, contacts, calendars, photos, etc simply. Can I transfer any data out of my old laptop HDD ? The iTunes on the new laptop doesn't like the idea of me using it for the old phone either !!

    If the hard drive in your old laptop still works you could put it in an external enclosure in order to copy your entire iTunes folder to your new laptop.  If that isn't possible, the first thing you would need to do is copy any music you didn't purchase from iTunes from your phone to your iTunes library on you new laptop using 3rd party software such as Touch Copy.  This can't be accomplished with iTunes (iTunes will only transfer purchased music from your phone).  You would also need to do the same thing with any Photo Library pictures on your phone that were synced from your old computer.  These can't be transfered with iTunes either.  Once you've done this, carefully follow the steps in wjosten's post here in order to sync your phone to your new laptop without losing data: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13356770#13356770.  (For Windows, substitue Outlook for Address Book/iCal in step 2.)

  • Transferred my Library to new laptop, but how to associate/sync iPhone with new laptop?

    I got a new laptop. The old laptop is still working. I transferred my library using the Home Sharing method and all of my items were moved except my apps. I plugged in my iPhone to the new computer and used "Transfer Purchases from iPhone" option and all of my apps were added to the library. But, now I don't know how to associate the iPhone with the new computer. When I plug in my iPhone to the new computer. It starts to sync. It says steps 1 through 3, spins for 20 seconds and says complete, but nothing was done. I do not get the "this iPhone is associated with another library" message when I plug it in to new computer, perhaps because I've authorized both computers. All I can find in my searches is how to avoid losing all of your data and how to transfer your library, but none has dealt with this exact situation. I am stumped as to how to get iPhone associated with new computer. Can I transfer my backup from the old computer and restore from backup? Other thoughts? Sorry if the answer is somewhere (I'm sure it is), but I have spent two days looking.

    Randers4, so I carefully followed the directions (only one that confused me was about adding a fake address/calendar entry, is that for Macs, I'm using a PC?.)  I restored it from the backup and everything looked good. I had hope, the final step says to sync it and when I did, I had the exact same problem. It spun, went quickly through only 3 steps (even though there were 7 sync steps with my old laptop) and nothing changed. It clearly didn't sync.
    So, I had an idea that I would back up everything by right clicking in the left pane and forcing a back up on the new computer, and then erasing the entire phone and then restoring from the backup I just made to see if that would make a difference. So, after I tried that and it restored, it was weird. All of my settings were there. Some folders were there, my pictures were there, but all of my apps, folders, music and video was missing and it still wouldn't sync. So, then I had to plug it back into my old laptop and do a restore from there to get that stuff back.
    Shouldn't I get a message when I plug the iPhone into the new laptop saying this phone is connected to another computer? I tried "Reset Warning Messages" but it doesn't do anything. At this point, I don't care if I lose some of the stuff from my iPhone (texts, etc)...but I want it to sync to the new computer because my old laptop is on its death bed.
    So frustrating, all of my iTunes content is on the new computer, the only piece that is missing is getting it to "talk" to the iPhone. Times like this I wish I wasn't a poor teacher and could afford to get a nice Mac laptop.

    Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
    Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
    Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
    When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
    Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
    Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

    Hi Everyone
    I am stuck on a problem I have been trying to fix for a few hours with no luck after searching the community forums.
    Last week we bough a new PC and set up iTunes one the new PC transfering the iTunes library successfully from the old PC to the new one.
    All songs came across and appears to be working OK and iTunes is now looking at the correct library.
    Tonight my son connected his iPhone to the PC to add songs.  Problem is it wouldn't let him add any songs.
    Went into his device and checked the 'Manually Manage Music' and when I went to 'Apply' I got a message saying that this phone was not sync with this PC but with another library, which I assume is the library from the old PC, which I transferred.
    The message said that if I sync everything will be deleted and updated from the new library.
    If I do this does it mean that ALL his songs will deleted?
    There are about 1000 songs on the iPhone and he doesn't want to have to manually add them all again.
    So, what will happen if I do select Sync?  Will it delete his songs and he will have to reload?
    Or will it delete the songs and replace them with the songs new library that are already on his iPhone?
    Does that make sense?

    This is correct. Iphone will sync or maually manage with one and only one computer ar a time.  Sycning or manually managing with another will indeed erase teh current content and replace with the selected content from the new computer.
    If you have moved everything from the old computer to the new one, then hes should be able to sync everything right back to the iphone from the computer.

I have some phone albums on iPhone 5 that I want to download to a new computer, but I can't get them to show up in iTunes or iPhoto when I sync my phone. The only images that download are the ones from the camera roll. Any suggestions on how I could save these images?

    Photos outside the camera roll can only be transferred to the computer if you use 3rd party software, like Touchcopy for example, just to name one of the many a search will bring up.

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
    iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.

    If the sign does not go away it has not completed the restore. So you are incorrect when you say it "keeps completing the restore" if that message is still displayed.
    Do you get an error message? If so, what is the error number?

    Modular77:  With respect the dialog on the iPhone 'XX items could not be synced.  See iTunes for more information.' , would you happen to know where to look in iTunes?  I looked in all the places that seemed logical to me. 
    I am, however, asking only for future reverence, as the initial sync which generated the error dialog was done via USB, and almost immediately after the USB sync, I ran a WiFi Sync—two in a row in fact—both initiated from the iPhone.  Both WiFi syncs completed successfully with no error dialog. 
    I then ran another USB sync initiated from iTunes on the Macintosh, as was the first sync which gave the error. This second USB sync also completed successfully with no errors.
    I think someone in this thread mentioned non-AppleStore products or DMR issues which I think could not have been an issue in my case, as I was running the sync to install updated Apps from the AppStore, and additionally had deleted some music and movie items to make sure there was room for the App updates. Nothing was added other than the recently downloaded App updates from the AppStore. 
    iPhone3GS  iOS 5.1.1 build 9B206. 
              Developer Profile enabled.  iCloud enabled.
              32 GB “disk.” About 1.5 GB free after sync.
              iPhone NOT jailbroken
    MacBook 13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008 (NOT Macbook Pro)

    Thanks for any info or advice.  Problem IS now solved, but it absorbed a lot of time to reach that point.

Also if the above can be done can he change the settings on my actual phone and access my location without placing tracking software on my phone.  Can someone please help here as I can't restore a backup to my phone for obvious reasons and refuse to change my number because of this loser.

    Connect the device to the computer.
    In iTunes, select the content desired to sync.
    Sync.
