Urgent: New database with restored tape backup - step by step

Hi
Oracle: 9.2.0.6
OS: AIX 5
There is an old full cold database backup on the TAPE drive which includes spfile and control files etc.
I have been asked to restore this database to a new server (AIX 5). I am a new dba with less hands on restore/recovery from tape drives using rman.
Can someone let me know
1. what do I need to know before I can start anything
2. how to restore backup from tape (spfile, control file, data files etc)
3. steps to create a database instance with backup restore and start it
4. How do I know password of sys/system users
Thankyou so much for help.
Vishal

'NEW' doesn't seem to be the right word here, but you can DUPLICATE (clone) an existing database or restore it to a new host:

  • Itune forces to setup as new ipad or restore from backup?!

I have 3 ipads and 2 iphones in my house sharing the same apple ID, but when I tried to connect one of the ipads to itune on my PC, it only gives option to set up as new phone or restore from backup, either option would wipe out the data I already have on the ipad. All other devices can connect to itune without problems. Found another thread with the same problem, but the solution of logging on windows with different user does not solve my problem. Can anyone help? Itune has to be the worst and dumbest product from apple!

I too have this very frustrating issue. It worked fine 2 weeks ago.
I have two devices setup, and they have the same name, but that has never been a problem as one is a 5G 80GB iPod, and the other is an iPhone 3GS.
Now, everytime I plug my iPhone into my PC, iTunes comes up and asks me to restore.
Grrr... I have restored 3 times. I have also performed a complete iPhone reset and a restore... same thing, and I have no idea why.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    S.

  • HT1766 After restoring my iphone 4 to factory settings, then restoring from a recent backup, my phone will reboot but keeps coming back to the "new setup or restore from backup screen". How can I by-pass this screen to go directly to the sync apps/music s

After restoring my iphone 4 to factory settings, then restoring from a recent backup, my phone will reboot but keeps coming back to the "new setup or restore from backup screen". How can I by-pass this screen to go directly to the sync apps/music screen?

Well, it's certainly behaving as though the phone that was backed up was synced to a different iTunes library.
I'm going to throw one more thing out there... Yes, you backed it up to this computer... Was the phone previously set up to sync with this computer? Or was it syncing with a different computer and you just backed it up to this one?
You may have to end up setting it up as a new device and rebuilding the phone by manually re-syncing your data, apps, music, etc. to the phone.
Trying to keep your library on a different drive can be tricky. If iTunes starts up and the library isn't available, it may end up generating a new library ID, meaning that you could easily find yourself in exactly the position you're in now...
I'm curious why there was a need to restore your phone to begin with... It may not have any bearing on this at all, but it could.

  • Why is it that every time I connect my iphone into itunes, it always asks me if i want to "Set up as a new phone" or "restore from backup"?

Every time I plug in my iPhone 4 into iTunes, it always asks me if i want to "Set up as a new phone" or "restore from backup". But every time i click on restore from back up it deletes everything & that iTunes message is still there. Is something wrong with iTunes?

Apparently it does need to be restored because that is what it is requesting. You will need to restore it as New or from a recent backup if you made one.

  • Should I set up as new iPhone or restore from backup 3GS to 4S?

Just got my 4S and I'm upgrading from 3GS.  Should I set it up as a new phone or should I restore from iTunes backup during the 4S setup?  I want to keep my contacts, apps, etc.

I just messed mine up by setting it up as a new phone. Restoring from backup is supposed to copy over all your apps, preferences, contacts, texts etc. to your new phone,

  • Creating a new database with exporrt file

    Hi there,
I am to create a new database with an export file.
I have the export file (exp) and the new environment set up (Oracle10g on UNIX)
Can someone gimme some guide lines and what I might probably face and new to correct.
    Regards.

Well I don't think that it would be possible to show you a full db import/export here. All you need to do s a full database import from the source database to the target database.
    And I have to rrename
the db to some other name.
Use the DBNEWID utility to do it.

  • I'm upgrading to the 5, do i set up a new phone or Restore from backup?

I'm upgrading to the 5, do i set up a new phone or Restore from backup?

That depends if you want your current data on your new phone, then restore from backup.  IF you don't then set up as new.

    1. set up as new
    2. transfer you wife's purchases.
    3. Just in case create one computer back up manually.
    Enjoy.

  • Getting new iPhone 6 currently using iPhone 5s. Question, is it best to set it up as a new phone or, restore a backup from my 5s. I have all my stuff in the cloud and my music is all on iTunes match.

question, is it best to restore a backup from my 5s or, set up as a new phone. I have all my stuff in the cloud and also subscribe to iTunes match.

I have to agree with Alfred above. I had an iPhone 4 and set up my 6 as a new one. I did it in steps, getting the basic stuff like email and iCloud set up first, then adding apps, and finally loading all of my music. I feel it was worth the investment in time as I did not end up not migrating quite a few apps from the 4 to the 6.
Thinking about it, I'm not sure I could have done it from a backup since the 4 wasn't running (and can't run) iOS 8. In any case, it was never on my radar.

  • HT201269 itunes said i dont have enough storage on new phone to restore from backup

i bought a new iphone 5s and want to restore from the backup from my old iphone 4. I backed up the old phone to my computer with itunes. When i try to restore it a message " not enough storage space available on phone" pops up. Is there a way to delete apps from the old backup to free some space? help please!

You cannot modify the backup once it is done. Did you purchase a new phone with a capacity smaller than the one that you backed up?
