  • System maintenance and clean up

From all the reading I have done, the way I understand the Mac is you should not have to do any system maintenance or clean up.
I was doing a spotlight search and several times tons of Entourage emails would show up. When I first got the Mac I gave Entourage a try before realizing I liked Outlook much better... so I deleted my exchange information from Entourage and discontinued using it.
I finally got curious as to why all these email files were showing up even though they had been removed from Entourage. I went traced down the folder and there was thousands of these Entourage email files in the cache folder!!
I deleted them all manually as they were taking a lot of space up.
What steps should I take to get rid of files like this, that the Mac obviously doesn't do automatically, so that I don't end up with Gigs of space being wasted in the long term??

I recommend first off, migrating away from Entourage*:

  • Missing system prefrences and other apps!! What do i do!?

My I book G4 with tiger has been having some issues. First my (system preferences, mail, automator ect.) applications are missing. I have a external hard drive but i do not know how to go about backing it up. My computer is also experiencing long startup times (2+ min.) and trouble connecting to wi-fi. Please help me.

If the computer shipped with the Tiger 10.4.x system on DVD media, then you
have most if not all the stuff to get going on that install disc#1. You can start
the computer from the install disc 1 by inserting that disc into the optical drive
and restarting with the C key held down. This gets you into the Installer; but
within the first page with a full window and the Installer menu-bar, you have
options and access to tools, such as Disk Utility. And options in Disk Utility.
Depending on what kind of external drive unit you have, it could be used as a
backup. Some kinds of backups are best done to a FireWire enclosed HDD
with a bootable chipset for making bootable clones of OS X using a clone utility
such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper; both are download utilities and
they can be utilized directly once the instructions from their home pages are clear.
A clone should not be performed to a USB2.0 drive if expected to be bootable in
the older PPC Macs; though some users had some successes in some instances
the FireWire drive appeared the best overall setup to be invested in for those.
You could use Pacifist utility (will run in Demo mode) to extricate correct packages
from the Installer, to attempt to repair by reinstalling, just the parts that are missing.
Pacifist can install parts of the system as it pulls them from a source and makes an
installer on the desktop. This can be tricky, since it may not work the first time. And
some aspects of the instructions can be unclear, making the result non-functional.
An 'Archive & Install' - then update the resulting new system folder using the Combo
and last security updates, all Java updates, quicktime, shockwave & flash player,
new browsers, and other parts, could be the best way to go. If the hard disk drive is
not failing, a full new installation on a zero-overwritten and reformatted hard disk drive
would be a way to assure yourself the old content would be wiped out totally; so some
kind of backup of even a defective drive's contents would be a good idea.

With a mangled System and missing parts, some aspects of making an archive may be
difficult. And your Disk Utility in the computer's system normally is within the Applications
folder, in a Utilities folder. If Apps is gone, so is the Disk Utility. There is one on the boot
install disc; so you can prepare an appropriate external hard disk drive with that, for use
as a backup or clone host, if it is suitable.
You have a few options. I'm still trying to figure out how the System Preferences and
Applications folders could be missing or trashed from a user's computer. Unless a
helper who had access to the computer while the admin-owner was away, had fun
and opened folders, files, drives; and played drag-drop, trash, etc.
Had you tried a search for System Preferences to see if that item was moved into
some other incorrect location or the Apps moved into another folder?
    Sound like fun...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Troubles with opening Finder, System Preferences, and others from dock

I am having problems with Finder, System Preferences, applications like Word, Excel, and Firefox. When I click on their icons in the dock, the menu bar appears with the name of the application and file, edit, etc. but the application does not open a window on the screen. I just see my background pic. Some of the items in the menu bar that pop down don't work. However, apps like my mail, Safari, Itunes and others work properly.
If anyone can help me with some suggestions, that would be great!

    Hello t:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Do those applications open from the application folder? If they do:
Try trashing a preference file and restarting (com.apple.dock.plist).
If that does not help, drag the icons that do not work off the dock (poof sound). Then go to the application folder and drag the appropriate icon to the dock.

  • OS changes System settings and other stuff

    Hej,
I have this very strange thing going on atm w/ my MacBook (ICD1), as all my remembered usernames and passwords in Safari are gone, iTunes is strange (keeps on telling me that my library is damaged, Artwork missing, other things show up twice w/ different sets of files [two Podcasts Folders for example, in one are 20 and in the other one are 35 - the original 20 plus 15 others I downloaded later]), OS changes desktop and and other System settings, Skype passwords are missing, iTerm went back to original configuration, etc. Its all very annoying, and I have no idea what could be the cause for this. I spend the better part of today reading support and the forums but found no similar case, maybe someone can help me, please?

First, I'd make sure the disk verified okay with the install utility.
Then I'd check the disk permissions, with the install utility.

  • Power Manager and LCD Brightness, System Freezes, and other Problems

I have a brand new X200 with PM 1.54.  At first everything was working great.  Over the past few days I've noticed a few things:
    1.  When running on battaries, the screen brightness changes about every 10 seconds even though the profile I'm using has that feature turned off.
    2.  After running the computer for about 1/2 hr, suddenly the PM shows a dramatic reduction in amount of time left on my battery which coinsides with:
         a) fan consantly running; AND
         b) about 10 minuntes later my entire system freezes and I have to push the power button to force a reboot.
    Any ideas what's wrong?

Since your Mac Pro is new, you would do well to contact Apple about this problem while the warranty is still in effect.

  • What is Apple's position on system maintenance and optimization?

I mean, obviously something has to be done to keep our macs as fast as after an ex-novo installation...
    apple engineers, please answer!

there is not a single issue, it's just a gradual decrease of the overall performance.
    to give some examples:
    - time to boot
    - time to open safari, mail, itunes,... (actually aperture is still pretty fast)
    - time to get the size of big folders
they are all related to the hard drive (i've got a 7200 rpm hard drive anyway). when the tasks are processor demanding, my mac goes as smoothly as always.
also, when i fresh install the system (i last did it when updating to SL) initially it goes fast and then, gradually, data access slows down.
i believe i'm not the only one with this kind of problem and it would be nice to have a way to fix it (other than re-installing ex-novo the os).

  • CProjects - Project Systems Linking and other features

    Dear All,
I need inputs on how to integrate cProjects with Project Systems. Also i need information on the what are all the information we can integrate between these two.
One more important thing is i am seeing the Services, Details Data and Controlling links in My cProjects system. Where as i found Account Assignment, Costing links in one screenshot of Documents. And both are for cProjects 4.0. Why this difference is showing up
And one generic question is, what is the requirement for these kind of scenarios. And pros and Cons of both the systems.
    regards,
    rajesh.

    Hi Srini,
Thanks very much for the links. However, I've already gone through the standard documentation in SAP and they are a bit too high level/vague for me. I have considerable experience in xRPM, cProjects Suite and have good grasp of project management concepts, tool and techniques. My knowledge of PS is somewhat limited though.
What I am specifically looking for is what type integration options and scenarios are available. For example, cProjects can have phases and tasks defined. How would these integrate with for example WBS elements and networks in PS? What are the things you would do in cProjects and not PS and vice versa? Hope my question is clearer now.
Appreciate any further information you may have on the above.
    Thanks,
    Lashan

  • System maintenance and start up

Hello: Thanks in advance. My system works fine 90 percent of the time. I use DVD Studio Pro, FCP, Compressor, lots of DV media, 2 External Firewire drives, etc. Maxed out on Ram and Drive Space. Nothing too crazy.
If I ever have to restart my system, sometimes it takes 20 times for me to restart before it's good to go. Sometimes on the first restart it works fine. Other times it takes 10 times and I have to manually shut down and start up each time.
How can I fix this? What haven't I done? I have used Disk Utility, Mac Janitor, etc. to try and fix. Like I said. the system works fine 90 percent of the time. Thanks.
    Craig

I think you may have some serious disk repair to handle. First, try the following:
Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
I would then download TinkerTool System and use it to clear out all user/system caches, font caches, etc. Navigate to the /System/Library/ folder and delete the Extensions.kextcache and Extensions.mkext files.
Then do a restart to allow the OS to rebuild the caches. If problems persist with applications crashing, then try creating a new user account and logging into that account. If the crashes cease, then there may be some corrupted preference files associated with the apps that are crashing.

  • Issues with spotlight, system preferences, and other programs

I am having some incredibly frustrating issues since I autoupdated last week. Since using autoupdate, My spotlight will not work (I type in information and it deletes the characters moments after i type it, and my system preferences will not open; it merely closes after 2-3 seconds. I saw on the spotlight board that to fix the spotlight, you must index the spotlight to make it work after an update, but I cannot do that because system preferences will not work. Dows anybody have any input???
    Thanks!

I'm not sure if this helps, but here is my log in my console. I tried deleting thd files you mentioned, however it is still malfunctioning. Any other ideas???
    Thank!

  • How do I perform system maintenance on my iMac (Yosemite)?

I would like to know how to keep my Mac clean and healthy.  And I'm also trying to help out my sister who is having trouble with her iMac (Yosemite) that is sick.  Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The best way to keep a Mac clean and healthy is to not install applications that claim to clean it or make it healthy. It has built in maintenance routines that run automatically and installing 3rd party cleaning etc. utilities is one of the biggest source of problems. The following has some information that may be of interest: http://www.reedcorner.net/the-myth-of-the-dirty-mac/
Regarding the trouble with your sister's Mac, it would be a good idea to start a thread with something specific in the title about what problem(s) it is having.  The following also may help: http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/

  • Why am I both unable to open Firefox and unable to uninstall it? I used Firefox regularly until today, but this morning I did a System Restore and other troubleshooting and now Firefox is completely unavailable to me.

I've been having lots of problems with my computer abruptly shutting down lately. This problem '''''might''''' be solved -- it's too early to tell.
When I try to uninstall Firefox, it beeps like Windows is going to uninstall it, then nothing. I close out the Window, then search for it to see if it's gone. It's still there.
I like Firefox, but now I'm forced to use IE. How can I get Firefox back? I don't want to download it until I've uninstalled what's on here now.

First, please try reinstalling Firefox over your current installation. There is very little risk of making things any worse than the system restore function has already done.
