URGENT PLEASE HELP: iTunes Will Play Songs With No Sound.
Hello all. I recently did the following and significantly screwed up my iTunes:
-Tried to move my directory to an external hard drive.
-This didn't work, so I then had to reload my iTunes.
-I did this by doing the standard copying the .xml library file to the desktop, deleting the old library files and importing the new .xml into the iTunes.
-However, I now have music in my iTunes, but when I click on files, they'll play but with no sound. No exclamation point comes up next to them to signal they're missing, but just no sound.
-Tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the latest iTunes. Still nothing.
I also tried dragging a random song into iTunes to see whether it was just a directory mix-up still, but no dice. Right now, the directory for my iTunes is Macintosh HD:Users:name:Music:iTunes:iTunes Music.
Please help!!!!
Well, that could be, but before thinking of an hardware issue, first check all possible software settings.
Try this:
In System Preferences>Sound there are two volume sliders.
Set the Output volume about halfway. Now move the Alert volume slider just a little bit. This normally will invoke the Mac to play the selected alert sound.
Still no sound?
Can you connect a headphone to the PB?
If yes, does it have sound?

You music etc should not be affected by problems with the iTunes program, nevertheless it is always a good idea to backup your data.
You haven't said if there was any error message when you tried to start iTunes. If there was one please give it in full.
Also check to see if QuickTime works, iTunes can not work without it. If QuickTime doesn't work, it has to be fixed before worrying about iTunes.
Then restart your PC and open your Task manger and select the Processes tab.
Try to start iTunes, does iTunes.exe appear on the processes tab? If so does it disappear again or remain although the programs does not open? -

With that one, let's try the following procedure.
First, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. If it goes, good. If it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to iTunes.
Next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any iTunes and/or QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.
Next, we'll manually remove any leftover iTunes or QuickTime program files:
(1) Open Local Disk (C:) in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.
(2) Open the Program Files folder.
(3) Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.
(4) Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. (Note: This folder may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
(5) Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue. (Note: These files may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)
(6) Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.
(7) Restart your computer.
Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly now? -

Three pc's, two are identical hardware twins (one is a clone for the other as absolute backup) the other my home PC.
One of the twins upgraded no problems. The sibling upgraded but iTunes will not come to the desktop, it loads and sits in the process list doing nothing.
I checked all the "answers" in this forum and nothing worked on the twin pc at all except uninstalling and going back to the previous version which I had to get from the hippo site (note to Apple: at least leave the previous version available for download for those "update" moments).
The home machine upgraded but I lost my audio drivers and software completely. Fixed it by re-installing the audio drivers and software after installing iTunes.
Either way you look at it there are a lot of users on the pc with this problem, Apple have changed something fundamental (you never used to have to reboot after upgrading or fresh installing) and it is causing issues that they should address.
Wasted a lot of time sorting this out for myself and not sure I want to "upgrade" to the next release, not sure I trust Apple software forward of this as I have a lot of music stored and the thought of having to really have to recreate the library because of an update issue ith no fall back...

i recently recieved an ipod nano for christmas, and registered it to the itunes on my mums computer, however, when attempting to download songs from itunes on my dads computer, it tells me that i have to lose all of hte songs already on my ipod to replace them by the new songs frommy dads computer, because my ipod is not registered to it. is there any way around this?

Help Itunes not playing songs, slow to load
I'm running windows xp on a laptop, and itunes. It is the current version downloaded from mac. The problem is takes about 4 min to actually open itunes. When it finally does, it won't play any songs. I've tried reinstalling it, and tried deleting/updating my song folders. All other programs run smoothly on this computer, what could be wrong??

there may be a few different things going on here (possibly more than one at once).
first let's check the start-up problem:

hmmm. have you been disabling any qt processes in your start-up? (i keep seeing that recommended in "speed up your PC" articles, but it will produce odd effects like this with itunes start-up.) see:

checked, you might want to check to see if any of your drivers are out of date. (excuse the tentative nature of this last suggestion. we're still in the early days of troubleshooting the "system" compatibility mode issues. still not sure precisely what is going on in the background of them.)

I followed instruction to move my library from C:\users\%loginname%\My Music\iTunes to any where other than C:\ after changing the folder in Preferences\Advanced and choose File\Library\ organize library the folder structure is being created but any new item or file will be saved to the original location at C:\ !!!
Please reply if you have any idea or solution, I have even try the iTunes 9 (64) it acts the same behavior.

Now in Mtn Lion it has took the playing rights from me and locked them off!

Right-click in it > Show in Finder. Finally, right-click in that file > Get Info > Sharing & Permissions. See if you have got read permission,
Clicked through the Get Info > Sharing & Permissions and when I closed the window the song played again.
Not sure why but it worked for me! -

if you already have that and it's windows then uninstall itunes
use regEdit you can type that in run or the likes and search and delete all hits you get on itunes
then reboot windows and install itunes again -
My itunes looks nothing like the examples in this tutorial. I do not have "display exact duplicates" or "date added". Can someone please help me remove duplicate songs? Also, I downloaded two audio books and they are showing up in my song list. Why???
