URGENT -- Preview.app temp directory Need to recover data!

Briefly, I was doing a lot of highlighting and note-taking in a PDF. Made it to the end, then wanted to delete something on my desktop. Don't ask me how, but when I deleted (via keyboard shortcuts) the PDF that I had opened was moved to the trash. Somehow Preview still had focus, I suppose. I retrieved it from the Trash and... nothing. No edits were there, because I had (perhaps stupidly) not saved my PDF during my edits.
Time Machine had backed up just five minutes before that fiasco, but of course the PDF that I recovered also had none of my edits, because I hadn't saved it.
You know how TextEdit creates a temporary file in the same directory when you're editing a document? Does Preview do something similar? If so, what directory does it store its temporary file in? I could dig THAT out with Time Machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Holy crap, I got it to work.
Essentially, I just waited until DiskWarrior reached Step 9 and told it to skip the step before it had a chance to freeze. It skipped successfully, moved on, rebuilt and replaced the faulty directory files.
So far the computer is booting like normal, I can log in, and I'm currently copying all of the data to an external as I type this.
I still have no idea why the computer wouldn't mount or boot to any drive, but I guess I'll deal with that later.

  • Blue Screen on Satellite P100 - need to recover data

On switching on my laptop yesterday I was faced with a blue screen error message which even after running chkdisk keeps on appearing, even when rebooting in safe mode.
The problem is I only have Toshiba recovery disks (not an XP disk - XP was pre-installed on the laptop) and they say on them using the recovery disk wipes the computer and I need to recover data on the hard drive before reformatting.
I've taken the laptop to the local repair centre and they say they have to reformat and dont do data recovery.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks very much for your replies and apologies for the delay in replying but I have only just managed to get my laptop reconfigured and get back online!!!
I took the laptop to the local Toshiba repair centre and they ran some tests and said that there was no problem with the hardware. However, when I took the machine to a specialist company to get the data recovered they reported 'serious errors in the file allocation table'. They managed to recover most of my data but when the hard drive was re-formatted the problems returned so I had to purchase a new hard drive which wasnt cheap.
My laptop is under warranty and I am a little annoyed that they said there was no problem with the hard drive when there patently was. I would like to reocover the money from Toshiba spent on the drive. (laptop under warranty)
    Many thanks in anticipation.

  • Erased my disk need to recover data

So this is what happened (in details):
    1. I dropped my mac book pro accidentally (Have to complain that mag safe DIDN'T WORK AT ALL)
    2. By using Command+R+Power, mac checked it was caused by a damage from hard disk.
    3. By using Shift, I entered safety mode.
    4. Disk Utility stated that it couldn't first-aid it, so I had to erase all my data.
    5. I just got my Pro for one week so I didn't time machine it.
    6. After erasing all my data, I installed Mac OSX again.
    7. Even though I didn't time machine it, I already transferred some important pictures to my Mac without leaving copies on my old PC.
    8. I REALLY REALLY need to recover, at least, those pictures.  They are so precious for me.  I know it's my fault but I really do think that mac is solid.
    9. SO HELP ME PLEASE!

I'm afraid that if you erased your hard drive, those photos are long gone. There are some data recovery apps out there (DIskWarrior, Data Rescue 3) that may help, but a data recovery center is likely your best bet - and they can be expensive.
I seriously doubt that you'll be able to recover your data - please look at coming up with some sort of backup scheme to prevent such a loss in the future.

  • MacBook Pro HD issues; won't boot to any drive; need to recover data

*Apologies in advance for the lengthy post. I just want to be sure I include as much detail as possible. Thanks in advance for reading all of this and offering any thoughts and suggestions.
    I have a 13-inch late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.
The computer recently began booting slower and slower until finally one day it did nothing but show the gray boot screen with the apple and a spinning circle and/or progress bar at the bottom. It won't do anything else. I assume it's the HD; no surprise there. What's killing me is that no matter what I do, I can't boot to any disk, internal or external, can't mount it in target disk mode, and can't repair it or recover data, which is a first for me with any HD. However, the computer still clearly sees the drive, and the drive sounds and runs normally (meaning no clicks; appropriate amount of whirs and such).
    What I've done so far:
    Reset PRAM — no help
    Reset SMC — no help
Boot in Safe Mode — same result as regular boot: gray logo screen with spinning wheel
    Disk Utility message:
Verify Disk — "Error: This disk nees to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
Repair Disk — gets as far as "Checking catalog file" then shows "Keys out of order". Next is "Rebuilding catalog B-tree." Then "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired."
fsck — same as Disk Utility: "Keys out of order (4, 22016)", "Rebuilding catalog B-tree", then "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired." FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED." ...over and over again
If I hold Option while starting the computer, it gives me only two drives to boot from, regardless of any other external HDs or flash drives I have attached: Macintosh HD (internal), and Recovery HD (internal partition). If I choose Macintosh HD, it's hit or miss whether it prompts the Disk Utility screen or just gray-screens forever. If I choose Recovery HD, it successfully runs Disk Utility every time. Here's the thing, though — if I attach an external HD, it doesn't see it during the initial Option-startup. However, from Disk Utility I'm able to select a startup disk from the menu to restart into. It sees the externals in there every time and lets me select them as startup disks, but upon restart it returns to the gray Apple logo screen with spinning wheel and/or progress bar at bottom. Sometimes it also sees the internal Macintosh HD here, but selecting that is useless. I can't actually boot from any disk, internal or external, running full OS or even just recovery software.
I've tried using TechTool Pro 8's edisk and ProToGo bootable drives, but again, the MacBook only sees them from Disk Utility only (not on Option-start), and I can select them, but it doesn't actually boot to them; it reverts back to gray screen.
I've installed a full version of OS 10.10.2 on an external hard drive, complete with DiskWarrior 4 on it, but same problem as above — it sees it in the "Select Startup Disk" menu, but not in the initial Option-start or successful reboot.
I've tried booting from a DiskWarrior 4 DVD using C-startup. It recognizes and spins the DVD from the get-go. Eventually it boots to it (after about 20 minutes or so of reading the DVD). I'm able to launch DiskWarrior 4 and start a rebuild. However, it goes all the way through "Step 6: Constructing optimized replacement directory... Overlapped files detected: 7 ...Step 7: Finishing construction ...Step 8: Reading from disc, one moment please..." and then the computer kernel panicked. This happened several times. I reset the PRAM again, then retried DiskWarrior DVD boot, this avoided a kernel panic and it got as far as "Comparing directories... Step 9: Recording any file or folder differences; 3,449,089,956 tests..." and then DiskWarrior and the computer both freeze and I have to force shutdown.
The drive will not mount to another laptop in Target Disk Mode.
Disk Arbitrator immediately sees the the faulty laptop HD, but won't let me mount or unmount it. It's just there, grayed out.
Data Rescue 4 is able to see the faulty laptop HD through Target Disk Mode, even though the drive itself will not mount to my desktop. I am able to scan the drive using DR4, and start a data recovery process. However, DR4 is dumping all recovered data into "User Defined" ai (Adobe Illustrator) files, which makes absolutely no sense at all. What's more, the files aren't able to be opened by any program. Even files that it hasn't recovered into ai files, like txt and mpegs, cannot be opened. I've tried recovering from both the drive itself and from a clone of the drive (made through DR4), with the same result each time.
So, all of that said, I guess my first question is what the **** is going on? The drive mechanically is functioning fine, but there seems to be an issue with its readability (and the directory/files?).
What's more, why won't this laptop mount ANY drive? I should be able to Option-boot into any drive, especially if the USB ports, drives, and OS's are all fully functional, right? Is there any workaround I'm missing? Even if the internal drive and data are just screwed, what's causing a total lack of mounting or booting of any drive, internal or external?

Holy crap, I got it to work.
Essentially, I just waited until DiskWarrior reached Step 9 and told it to skip the step before it had a chance to freeze. It skipped successfully, moved on, rebuilt and replaced the faulty directory files.
So far the computer is booting like normal, I can log in, and I'm currently copying all of the data to an external as I type this.

  • Need to recover data from Bootcamp partition

    Hi, all,
I recently sent my Macbook Pro in for repairs after a crash (Windows partition not recognized, after working well for a year), and they replaced the logic board and HD, the former of which was dead and the latter of which "wasn't running very well". I got the HD back, and have been trying to get data off it; the problem is, most of my data was stored on my Windows bootcamp partition, which I can now see - but not access.
This is the info I got off it, since Disk Utility still recognizes it.
    Mount Point : /Volumes/BOOTCAMP
    Capacity : 116.7 GB (125,294,346,240 Bytes)
Format : Windows NT File System (NTFS)
    Available : 26.6 GB (28,521,467,904 Bytes)
    Used : 90.1 GB (96,772,874,240 Bytes)
    Number of Files : 138,674
    Owners Enabled : No
    Number of Folders : 0
I feel as if there should be a way to recover data from the drive, since it obviously still...exists and is recognized. But using "verify" in Disk Utility returns a "verify volume failed: invalid request", and I can't otherwise see any files, since there's apparently 0 folders.
Does anyone have any recommendations for data recovery software that works in Mac? I can't just run Windows from an external drive because the HD with the Bootcamp on it is Mac-formatted.
    Many thanks.

Probably the best option for attempting to recover files is attaching the hdd to a> USB Adapter and plug it into a usb port an another machine. If the hdd has not failed it should show up as a drive and can be browsed on the other machine to copy files over.
******Clicking the Thumbs-Up button is a way to say -Thanks!.******

  • HD failed back in June and need to recover data

My HD failed and my TM backup is good to the end of May. The only stuff I need to back-up since is emails from mail and a few documents. iTunes purchases I think I can get from iTunes store.
The thing is I dont want to end up with duplicate files and emails.
I dont want to do another time machine backup before I perform a re-install of mac osx because the Apple approved agent who replaced the HD took a mirror copy of the old HD. The mac has not worked properly since and I dont want to plug my Time machine HD in, append to the existing backup made in May and carry a load of junk over to the new installation, or worse still corrupt the backup made in May.
I am not sure how to tackle this and am paranoid about getting it wrong because I have all my photos and a lot of my life on this HD.
Any guidance from experienced users would be most appreciated before I tackle the new osx installation and restore.

I'd strongly recommend first using either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make a full "bootable clone" on a different external disk drive, or a separate partition of your TM drive, if there's room on it. Boot from the clone and run from it, to be sure everything is there (good or bad) as on your current hard drive. This is your "fallback" if something else goes wrong.
What is wrong with your current system -- OSX or apps or user data or ???
If it's just (or mostly) OSX, then an Archive and Install, preserving user data and settings, should fix it. See the *Archive & Install* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine *User Tip* at the top of this forum. That will get you a fresh copy of OSX, "quarantine" the old one in a +Previous System+ folder so if any system-side settings or configuration, etc. were missed you can recover it before deleting the folder, and not touch your apps, data, etc.
Once you get things sorted out, replace the clone and update it weekly or so, in addition to continuing normal, regular TM backups. Note that your first TM backup after all this will be a full one; so if your TM disk isn't well over twice the size of your data, your best bet will be to erase it and let TM start fresh.
Since I think Murphy was an optimist, I'd also, at the very least, archive the photos and other important stuff to CDs/DVDs and take them to my safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, etc.

  • MBP Died, Need To Recover Data, Please Help!

    Hi All,
So, my beloved MBP has bit the dust. When I turn it on, I see the sleep light turns on and hard disk activation for a second, then, nothing (the screen is always black and there is never a chime). After attempting multiple times to reset PRAM and SMC, nothing changes. So, I think my logic board may have died.
But, this is not my question. My question is the following:
I had Filevault turned on for my standard account. I also had Time Machine turned on for that account. Now, is it possible to take out the hard drive and open up the Filevault sparseimage on another Mac? If so, does it require the master password or the account password? Also, is it possible to recover my data from the Time Machine backup? And if so, how do I do that?
Please, I need to know. Years of graduate school work relies on this!

David, I'm not sure if I have an answer to your problem. But what about getting an external enclosure for the Internal HD and then connect it to another computer and boot from the now "External" HD. If that works then you can move the critical data off to another drive and then not have to worry about mounting a filevault sparceimage.

  • Need help recovering data from an Xsan volume

Ok, let me preface this by saying that I've never used Xsan, so I'm not sure if I'm using the terminology correctly. Feel free to correct me or point me in the right direction so that I may provide better clarification.
I've got a new client who has  about 5 tb of data locked up in a Netgear ReadyNAS that was set up as an Xsan device on a Mac Pro Server running Lion Server 10.7.4. This was set up by a previous IT services company, and we were preparing to move all of their data to a regular RAID NAS device (there is no use for an Xsan in this office environment) and initiate backup solutions. However, several days ago, the server's boot volume crashed fatally and could not be recovered. There was no backup of the boot volume, so we had to start again from scratch. Since reinstalling Lion Server on the Mac Pro, we have been unable to retrieve the data off of the Netgear ReadyNAS.
There is no backup of the data on the drive, so we're treating this with kid-golves as far as our approach. So far we've tired connectng to the NAS, but are only seeing a couple of shares that don't appear to hold any data. We've been on the phone with Apple's Enterprise Support Group, and been escalated up to the point of having to pay for higher-end supporty. At that point, we phoned Netgear Support to see what they could offer. They're kindly looking into it over the weekend by logging in remotely, but I'm here to ask if there's anyone here who might have experience with a smilar siuation.
I've been really hesitant to try and connect to the drive with Xsan Admin, as I want to ensure that nothing gets deleted. Does anyone have a suggestion as to something we might try to get at this data? It seems like it would be a simple matter of connecting to the drive, but that's proving to not be the case.

I read this and began to shake.  You should track down the solution provider and choke them.
I hate to be the one to tell you, but based on your post, the data is likely lost forever and this is for many reasons.
First, you do not describe the presence of a meta data backup.  This is mistake number 1 of whoever set this solution up.  Deploying an Xsan with a single controller is foolish at best, negligent at worst.  Without it, you have no replication of the volume config information.  Are there SAN clients in this scendario or was there just the controller and folders reshared over file services?
Next, you mention the boot volume failed with no backup.  Based on this description, it sounds like the boot volume was not a mirror boot so all data was on one platter.  The failure of that platter means the failure of everything.  Your only recourse here is to send the drive out to a drive recovery service or attempt a controller board swap (fingers crossed it is just the controller that failed).  With some luck they can recover enough of the drive to allow you to sticth this together.  This is mistake number 2.
Next, the files that you REALLY need, /Library/FileSystems/Xsan/*, were never backed up.  With the loss of the boot volume, these files are now not available.  If the Xsan config files were present you could, in theory, stitch together a new controller and resurrect that volume.
And finally, you do not describe a backup solution for the San volume.  Cry....
I am sorry for your loss.  If there are more details or the conditions are better than you describe, reply.  Otherwise, bite the bullet and get that drive out to a data recovery service and pray.

  • Dropped my Ipod and it cracked open, need to recover data

    ladies and gents,
I have an ipod 30 gig and I dropped it for the last time, now the battery is disconnected and I think the ribbon broke but I just tried to connect it to the port at the bottom and it says on the screen "please wait, very low battery" now I didnt even think it would respond with no battery but I was wondering is there a way that I can recover the data off the hard drive? the hard drive is still connected! anyways if you could help me out I have some very important videos on there, thanks Craig

I'd suggest you contact a company called iResQ (www.iresq.com) as they may be able to assist you by fixing your iPod, or atleast doing some data recovery... They are a great organization who I've sold my old & broken iPods to in the past which I can not use any more... They have this service to help people like you get working again...
    Good Luck!

  • A105 wont boot up, need to recover data

    Hello,
My laptop froze a week or so ago and I had to do a hard shut down. Now it won't boot up. I see the initial Toshiba screen, then the Windows XP logo appears. But after a few seconds, that disappears and the screen remains blank. I can see and move the mouse arrow. I have tried F8 to boot in safe mode, but that just takes me to a screen that says "safe mode" in the four corners and info about the version of XP across the middle of the top. None of the other boot modes does anything either. I have also tried some of the suggestions I've found here, for instance removing the battery, holding the button, then restarting with just the cord. But no luch. I don't mind wiping the whole thing and starting over since I have had some problems with spyware, but I'd like to save my data first. What do folks suggest?
    Thanks !
    Dan

Several options here.  A lot will depend on how much space the files take up and what other hardware you have available. The easiest way is to take the hard drive out of the laptop, place it in an external enclosure, hook it up to another system that has enough space to hold the data, and then transfer it to that other computer.  You can pickup an external enclosure for about $20 or so.  Just make sure it works with the type of hard drive in your laptop which is probably a SATA 2.5" drive.
A second option would be to download a Linux Live CD like Ubuntu, boot to it, then use it's file manager to to transfer the files to an external hard drive or usb thumb drive, over the network to another system, or burn the files to a DVD(s).
Another option would be to replace the hard drive in the laptop with a new one (this might be necessary anyway as the old hard drive may be failing) and restore Windows to it, then hook the old hard drive up to the laptop using the enclosure losted above, then transfer the files directly to the restored system.
In any case before you try to use that old hard drive as your main system drive again you will want to test it fully to verify that it is indeed in working order.  To test the hard drive determine what brand of hard drive you have.  You can check the Bios/Setup to find out.  Go to that manufacturer's support site and download their Self Booting Diagnostic CD ISO image, create the CD using the Burn From Image option (see http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm for more information on doing this), then boot to it and run the most exhaustive tests available.  If you have a Toshiba drive you will need to use the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test as Toshiba doesn't supply their own.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Hard drive failing, need to recover data before it fully crashes

    Tried these things:
--disk utility from startup disk (said disk could not be repaired and invalid node structure)
--disk warrior three times, which of course took like a week total (all times it said could not be repaired; got error codes 2160 and 2304, which after researching led me to the next step)
--firewire the HD on the macbook in target mode to a working mac and ran disk warrior from there (said couldn't be repaired again and to backup files. yes, great, that is what I want to do, but how?)
--tried to mount disk through disk util while it was connected via FW (could not mount disk, said to verify/repair disk first)
--tried disk util's repair disk function (got 'unused node is not erased'; upon research, found advice to use disk warrior. great, now I run around in circles?)
I can easily replace the hard drive, and will do so... as soon as I get this woman's data off her corrupt drive. Is it possible to do that at this point? I don't get how I can see the drive but can't get to the files on it!!!

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Recover data from External Hard Drive

Hi, I was copying some .avi files from my laptop (latest Snow Leopard version) to a Iomega ScreenPlay Pro HD 1Tb and suddenly my electric power shutted down.
There was a copying error message and then inside the hard drive there was only some of the data I was copying. The prevoius one was gone.
Do you know what is happening? Are the files hidden somewhere? Can I retrieve/recover them somehow?
Please help me. It would be very thankful.
PS: I have never used Time Machine.

Before doing anything else, boot from your SL install disc and use Disk Utility to repair the HD on the laptop. If repairs are shown, run repair disc again until DU reports no problems. Next, do the same for the external drive.
From there, restart from the laptop and check that all the files you were copying are OK.
How you proceed from there depends on what you find, but don't create new files or folders until you know all is well on the laptop; if you need to recover data it will be easier if nothing is overwritten.

  • Preview.app - not functioning? Lost? How to update a recovered version?

    Dear Apple community!
I upgraded my MBP from Leopard to SnowLeopard (finally).
Everything went fine, but I found two versions of preview.app in my programs directory afterwards (yes, one in the specific folder where I once put it to).
Both were version 5 - the first was build 501 the second build 502. Not needing both I deleted the older one (using my PathFinder file browser). To my horrified surprise (after emptying the trash... and before Time Machine had its initial run), my preview.app stopped working. It opened itself, but that was it. Nothing else showed up. Nothing could help, but a proper reinstall of that app - nicely hidden in my SL install DVD. Here is, what I did:
I used the Shareware "Pacifist" to open that DVD and got the possibility to reinstall JUST the lost app - in my case, "preview". Everything went fine, preview started to work again.
    Two problems remained so far:
1st: The preview.app that I could reinstall onto my MBP came without the german language pack that it had before (from the very same SL DVD) - just a minor issue, but maybe some of you could provide a workaround.
2nd: The preview.app I reinstalled came in version 501 - so I lost the updated one and do not know how to update the older version to the current state of art. The Apple software update assistant could not locate it. Any suggestions?
Ok, that's what I did, hope it'll help you, if you once face the same problem.
    Thanks for answers and commentaries,
    have a good one,
    The MacManiacMan

Thx for the suggestion of a fresh install... I fear you might be right, but that solution isn´t providing me much happiness...
By the way, how to avoid another disaster of the same kind? Is there a possibility to get rid of those app doublets (that I usually find after 10.X upgrades) without messing things up?
    Best regards,
