URGENT: Safari appends BZ2 to most downloaded DMG files!

I've been downloading a number of DMGs from different websites, and Safari (or perhaps, my unzipping program The Unarchiver) has been adding .BZ2 to the end of them - making them virtually. unopenable.
I was terrified there was something wrong with my system, getting error messages that I can't mount the DMG files unarchived from the BZ2 files. I even made a thread for it here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1525572&tstart=0
This needs to be dealt with!
It's similar to the problem with Microsoft Office 2008 documents (.DOC) getting a .DOT on the end of them. See thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1524645&tstart=0
Hope you can help.
Once again, an Automator script for removing the BZ2 shouldn't be a solution.

Spotlight won't find the Archive Utility (you can find it in a Finder search window, but only if you tell it to include system files). It should have been installed in /System/Library/CoreServices (along with DiskImageMounter).
It does sound as if your file associations are screwed up. Did you say that the "Open With" for .dmg files was showing "DiskImageMounter"?
You could try doing this, which resets the associations for all applications:
In a terminal window, type:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -seed
You may get a bunch of warnings after that about opening apps for the first time.

  • Safari 5.1 can´t download dmg files

For a long time I couldn´t download dmg files or open PDF´s in Safari, every time when I tried to open or download a file Safari just opend a black screen and nothing else happend!
However..... I found a very simple solution which helped to solve both problems (Safari 5.1)
    Step 1:      Open FINDER -> Macintosh HD -> Libary -> Internet Plug-Ins
Step 2:      Transfer "ALL" files to your desktop! (do not just copy!!!)
Step 3:     Open Safari and empty cache and close Safari
Step 4:     Reopen Safari and try to open a PDF file or to download a dmg file ( at this point it was already working for me again!)
Step 5:     Transfer files from Desktop back to FINDER -> Macintosh HD -> Libary -> Internet Plug-Ins
    FINISH!!!!
If you experience any trouble again after Transfering the files back start again by step one and move at Step 5 always just one file to identify the file which seems to create the trouble!
I hope this simple steps helps for you guys as well

These statements require an Adobe Viewer plugin
That's going to be a problem unfortunately, with Safari 5.1
Read here >  Apple Safari 5.1 and Adobe Reader/Acrobat Advisory
A workaround according to Adobe is to use another browser.
I personally have found that Firefox works just fine.

  • I cannot successfully download .dmg files including Firefox updates. I can do it on Safari. Why?

When I try to download .dmg files with firefox, I get a box that asks if I want to Open with [choose] or Save File. Not sure what if any application to use to open it. So I try to save it but it doesn't save the .dmg file. So I use Safari. When I click the download button (as I did to get Firefox 4.0 for the Mac) in Safari, it automatically starts to download and creates the image to drag the image into the application folder. Why can't my Firefox do this whereas Safari cannot? This happens on my desktop at home and at work, both Macs; both using Max 10.6.6.

Pandora may either not be available in the language or country you are using.  This is likely the reason.
Or your iPhone may be restricted.  Check Settings > General > Restrictions

  • Problem downloading .DMG files (Safari 5.1 / Lion)

    Hi,
I installed Lion last night (successfully) but DropBox needed upgrading. When I tried to download the latest version in Safari, all I got was the .dmg file apparently trying to load in a new tab - once it had appeared to finish there was no sign of the file in my download folder or anywhere else.
During the download the Download button on Safari remained greyed out.
This happened with some other .dmg downloads also.
Anyone else experiencing similar issues? I do have Speed Download installed, but haven't yet had a chance to see if this is part of the problem.
    Thanks
    Ally.

Uninstalling Speed Downloader worked for me too - thanks for the suggestion.
It was kind of frustrating since some sites you could do a right-click and "Save Linked File" - but other sites didn't provide that ability.
I may re-install SD sometime later, but for now I'm just happy to be able to download in Safari again.

  • Cannot download .dmg files from Apple Developer

I am unable til download XCode 6 beta .dmg files on my Macbook Pro with OSX 10.9.4 (I have put a Samsung SSD as primary drive and a conventional harddisk as second in the DVD bay). I have a paid IOS developer account and is logged ind.
The problem is the same with Safari, Chrome and Firefox.
I can download the same .dmg files without problems with my Windows 8.1 computer, and install them after transfer to the mac - so that is my solution right now.
I can download .dmg files from other sites on my mac (eg. Intego) without problems.
I use Intego antivirus/net security but uninstall does not help the problem.
In all 3 browsers, a new tab is opened at it just spins til i finally times out.
    Any hint appreciated.
    Palle

I have now found that the problem is with:
    1) the developer page for XCode 6 beta ressources - but not with any other webpages, also no problem with the XCode 5 ressources
    2) library downloads from prefrerences within XCode 6 beta (currently beta 5) but ok within XCode 5.1 preferences.
    - so the problem is NOT with .dmg files - but any file having anything to do with XCode 6 beta. So:
Maybe I should rather ask in the developer forum.

  • Downloaded DMG files don't open.

I have had some trouble lately when downloading DMG files with Safari. In the URL bar I could see it was downloading and then downloaded however nothing happend. Changed to open with DiskUtility didn't do anything. Firewall had no influence. When downloaded with Firefox there was NO problem and everything went fine like it use to do with Safari. So I suspect it is a bug in Safari since this happens with all DMG files of late.

Yes I first looked in my 'Downloads' folder and none to be found. Other download files like mp3 and pdf's no problem, they open straight away and show a little download arrow icon top left in the browser. It's really just DMG files, very peculiar.

  • I cannot download dmg files

Everytime I try to download a dmg I just get a black screen and nothing downloads.

    Hi aikidojoe,
Sorry to say I have not been able to solve the problem.   However, the problem only exists with Safari, as
I also have Google Chrome and Firefox and am able to download dmg files on those.
I also have another problem with Safari that appears to have begun at the same time, I can't view or download
PDF files from websites on Safari, but again I can on Google Chrome and Firefox.
Even stranger (without going into a long list) there are things I can do Safari that I can not do on Google Chrome or Firefox, and other things I can do on Safari and Firefox but not Google Chrome, and still other things I can do on Safari and Google Chrome but not on Firefox.   All these things should work on all 3 browsers.
To make a long story a little shorter, with the exception of the problems with dmg and PDF files, overall Safari seems to be faster and handles the majority of things better than Firefox and Google Chrome.   So, in order to be fairly functional, when I need to download dmg files or PDF files I use Google Chrome which appears to be better than Firefox in these two areas.
Although I don't know what the actual problem is or what to do about it, I believe the problem is with Safari itself.   The current versions of Safari are made for 32 or 64 bit processors (I still use a 32 bit processor) and I think the problem is in this dual programming.
The latest versions of Firefox and Google Chrome are also made for 32 or 64 bit processors and again I think there are dual processing problems manifested in the fact they they won't do certain things right.
I plan to upgrade to a 64 bit computer this month and will try to remember to let you know what happens with the 3 browsers with the new setup.
In the meantime I would appreciate your comments on the above and any ideas you may have.
I hope this helps in some way.
    Good Luck!
    Hal

  • Problem downloading .dmg files.

Problem downloading .dmg files (Flash, Chrome, Firefox). Once I hit the download option Safari screen goes blank, actually grey and nothing downloads.

Back up all data, then uninstall "Speed Download" according to the developer's instructions.

  • Why do I get redirected to a blank page when I try to download .dmg files?

I have been having real difficulties for about the last 2 months downloading .dmg files. Instead, I have often been redirected to a blank page, which takes a while to load and the downloads window in my Safari browser does not recognize the download at all. If I try to "save target as" I simply get a useless HTML file. Anyone else have the same problem?

Make sure your software is up to date. Click your Apple menu / Software Update...

  • Upgraded to OSX 10.8.2 and now I can't run any downloaded dmg files.

Upgraded to OSX 10.8.2 and now I can't run any downloaded dmg files. Says "the Following disk images couldn't be opened". and then say's there "isn't enough disk space" I'm pretty sure it has something to do with apps that are not approved by the app store. How can I turn it off?

Select your hard drive in the Finder and choose File -> Get Info. What is the available space?

  • I'm unable to download dmg files

I'm unable to download most of the dmg files that I've tried. Last time I tried was with Dropbox (at http://www.dropbox.com/downloading?os=mac), a blank page shows and nothing happens after.
Appreciate your support to overcome this annyoing issue.

I had the same problem for ages - the problem came down to Speed Downloader - a download manager i installed ages ago which hadn't uninstalled properly.
If you have reset your pref's, done a permission repair and still failing check for installed plugins - Safari > Help > Installed Plugins - a list of all the plugins are in use there, I found the offending download manager plugin file name there and searched via spotlight then trashed it. All works OK from then on

  • Safari 6 bug (Can't download software files) - file not in download window

    Dear Everybody,
I insatlled Safari 6 and also afterwards ML, everything works fine on my macbook air but on my 2009 (early) iMac safari 6 has a severe problem. When I download software files such as a adove flash player dmg file, The file (link) loads in the browser bar until the blue bar reaches the right (not in download window) and then when it is done the browser window is black and the file is nowhere to be found?

Thanks Linc, that solved my problem - i had to re-download the SpeedDownload software and use the Uninstaller from there.
Seems SD isn't compatible with ML.

  • Downloading .dmg files

I've Safari 4.0.3 and I cannot download any file that's a .dmg, because what I get is a dark grey window and a"slide" like the audio or video.
    I've no problems using Firefox.
    Any help is welcome.

Same AGAIN!! Exact same problem. I thought it might have something to do with Ad blockers like Safari Adblock or Glimmerblocker - so I removed those completely, including the Input manager plugins, but it made no difference.
All other browsers download fine as before. This issue is serious. My install was an upgrade from 10.5.8.
