URGENT! T30 Hard Drive Replacement - Max Size Limit?
Is there a limit to the GB size that I can use to replace my internal hard drive? The largest I have seen referenced on the lenovo site is 80gb, but I would like to go bigger if it can be supported. Any ideas? I need to get this machine up and running ASAP, as the old drive is completely dead.
Thanks!

If you can find a brand new 7200rpm PATA laptop drive, such as that Hitachi 7K100, grab it immediately since they're no longer in production...
Personally, I prefer Seagate, but my T43 runs a Hitachi 60GB/7200 rpm...
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
George

We recently had the hard drive replaced on our Mac as part of Apple's replacement programme. Prior to sending it off for repair we did a final Time Machine back up, which was completed successfully. SInce getting the computer back we restored everything from the backup disk using Time Machine, which all worked fine, however now we are having problems with it completing regular backups. We receive a message each time telling up that the backup disk doesn't have enough space on it. It is telling us that it needs in the region of 370gb and only has around 30gb available. The computer hard drive is in the region of 350gb and the hard drive is a 400gb one. It is almost as if it is not recognising that the data already on the disk is the back up of this computer and is trying to complete a completely separate back up as opposed to just updating the backup already on the disk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this and therefore could give me some hints on what to do. I am reluctant to wipe the backup drive and start again, however I would prefer not to have to buy another hard drive if I can avoid it as this one is technically big enough
I look forward to getting some responsesHi, I never use TM myself.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?
http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Can't imaging something not being covered there.
PS. It's generally recommended a TM drive be at least twice the size of your main drive. -
What is the maximum hard drive replacement I can use on my PowerBook g4 867 ghz?
What is the maximum hard drive replacement I can use on my PowerBook g4 867 ghz?
Sorry we are late. This forum is getting less traffic as people upgrade and responses sometime take longer. Everyone here volunteers their time, and I for one was unavailable much of yesterday.
The limiting factor on max drive size is that your PowerBook uses the older PATA drive interface, and the largest PATA 2.5-inch drives available today are about 320 GB.
What I'm reserching is the ATA bus controller in your PowerBook. Some older Macs cannot recognize more than 128GB of PATA hard drive space. However, this archived discussion from 2008:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1413918?start=0&tstart=0
suggests that people are running PowerBooks older than yours and not suffering the 128GB limit.
At this point, I need help with what appears to be a descrepancy between the text of your post and the PowerBook in your profile. A "PowerBook6,2" model identifier returns to the "PowerBook G4 (12-inch DVI)" marketing name with a 1.0Ghz processor; the 12-inch PBG4 with a 867mHz processor shows a model identifier of PowerBook6.1. They show the same hard drive interface but the later on appears to be a sure bet for large hard drive support, -
Solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit?
solaris10 x86, laptop, 10G FAT32 partition for windows & x86 exchange data.
the fat32 partition mount as normal, can be read fine.
but write some file by x86, that can not find by windows.
anyboy know did the solaris-x86 mount fat32 partition, the partition max size limit? or no limit, why this problem occur?Mounting Windows partition in Solaris
The easiest way to share data now is to do it through a FAT32 partition. Solaris
recognises it as partition of type pcfs. It is specified as device:drive where drive is
either the DOS logical drive letter (c through z) or a drive number (1 through 24).
Drive letter c is equivalent to drive number 1 and represents the Primary DOS partition
on the disk; drive letters d through z are equivalent to drive numbers 2 through 24,
and represent DOS drives within the Extended DOS partition.Syntax is
mount -F pcfs device:drive /directroy-name
where directory name specifies the location where the file system is mounted.
To mount the first logical drive (d:) in the Extended DOS partition from an IDE hard
disk in the directory /d use
mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0d0p0:d /d
You can use mount directory-name after appending following line is in
/etc/vfstab file
device:drive directory-name pcfs no rw
for example
c0d0s0:c /c pcfs no rw
If your windows partition like the following means
C: - NTFS, D:-FAT32, E:-NTFS, F:-FAT32
Then you can only mount D, F not C & E.
Mounting D Drive:
mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:c /mountpoint
Mounting F Drive
mount -F pcfs /dev/disk/c0d0p0:d /mountpoint
The driveletter only for fat not including other file systems (ntfs or any linux filesystems). -
When I power up my Mac-Pro I only get a flashing file folder with a ? inside the folder. I suspect my hard drive is maxed to capacity can anyone help me as to what I should do?
Whatever the problem is you no longer have a bootable system. You need to try reinstalling OS X.
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I just had my hard drive replaced. I restored it using a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive. When I open Dashboard none of my "note" widgets will load. The other widgets open, such as weather, weather radar, calculater, dictionary, stock... Even the iPhoto Mini widget works, just not the notes ( Sticky Notes and K-Notes ). Any ideas on how to fix this ?
I did some research and found the solution to my problem. So I hope it's okay to answer my own question.
When you reinstall the OS, your Preferences go back to their default settings. Apparently Preferences is where this widget information is stored. This Preferences folder is located in the user Library folder which is hidden by default. You can access it using "one, or the other" of the following actions.
Action 1: (1) In the Finder, choose Go > Go To Folder
(2) In the Go To Folder dialog, type ~/Library
(3) Click Go
-- OR --
Action 2: Hold down the option (alt) key when using the Go menu. The Library folder is listed just below the Home folder.
After opening the Preferences folder, the file that you want to locate for k-notes is named
widget-com.rakoth.lichlord.widget.k-notes.plist
After you locate it make note of the byte size of the file. Now, with the Preferences folder still open, open Time Machine and go back in time until you see a big jump in the file size. That will be your uncorrupted plist. Restore it and close Time Machine.
Then Restart your computer.
After following this procedure I brought up Dashboard and my blank k-notes were now refilled with the previous text and color that occupied them before I had to restore the OS.
This procedure also worked for Sticky notes, which in the Preference folder are named
widget-com.apple.widget.stickies.plist -
Incredibly my rarely used 2011 Imac Hard Drive is toast. I saw they have a replacement program but even though it is way too soon for a hard drive OF QUALITY to be going out so soon as mine - mine is not included in the replacement program.
Which I have a problem with - how odd it is that they had enough trouble with these computers/hard drives to do a replacement program but mine which did the same thing, expired way too soon isn't covered. I've not had use of the computer for 4 months while I tried to fix the problem so it lasted a little over a year.
Anyway I need to know what to do to try to replace it myself as i haven't the funds to take it to Apple for repair. Plus, Apple Computers and me are history I will never buy another after spending over $1200 for a computer that's nothing more than a very large paperweight right now.
How do I know what size and all that?
I may not be able to afford even that so more than likely this is going to be a very nice looking worthless computer going to the landfill.I Am leaning more toward Kappy's comments, based on your attitude and comments, but I will ask some questions and add some useful comments as I am in a somewhat charitable mood.
Do you still have AppleCare on this iMac?
From your rather blunt comments I assume no, but have to ask anyhow.
This is why I recommend purchasing and registering for 3- year extended AppleCare.
Because of the nature of the newer iMac designs, hardware failure seems more likely or commonplace occurrence. I believe it's more of a excessive heat related issue than anything else despite what Apple has qualified as "normal" operating temps for these iMac models.
Check out the iFixit home site and search for iMac disassembly or tear/take down. Or search for iMac hard drive replacement on the site.
Another option is for you to purchase an external FireWire 400/800 drive as your new boot drive.
Running your iMac from a FW800 drive will be about as fast as running it from the iMac's Internal drive.
If you can afford it get as large a drive as you can afford.
And just for your info, while hard drives can last for years without issue they will go bad, eventually.
Some drives crash and burn faster than others. Especiallly true of the notebook style drives that Apple installs into the newer design iMac. With hard drives, the question is not if they will fail, but when will they fail.
If you had all of your data backed up to an extra, external drive or optical discs to begin with, you wouldn't be so upset about your internal drive dying as your data still would've been intact on another drive or discs in the first place.
I Always advocate for having some sort of backup strategy for your important data in the event of hardware or hard drive storage failure. -
Hard Drive Replacement for MBP 17"
Saw discussion on 15" MBP Hard Drive Replacement. I have 17" MBP which I purchased as it first came out almost 3 years ago and it has a 100GB hard drive. This has never been of adequate size. What sort of drive can I use in my MBP to get maximum storage? And, what about my Apple Care policy if I install the hard drive myself? I think the Apple Care policy was for 3 years? I purchased the MBP about May 2006.
Where do I purchase the drive for this MBP - and which HD make might be best - or good?If you bought your MBP in May of 2006, your warranty will be ending in a month or two, so you can just wait until it has ended. An AASP can replace the drive for you sooner if you don't want to wait, and your warranty will remain intact except for the drive itself, which will now be covered by the manufacturer's warranty instead, usually 3 or 5 years.
You don't necessarily void your warranty if you do the work yourself, but you do run the risk that some other problem would be blamed on the unauthorized repair and consequently not be covered. There has been a great deal of discussion on this topic.
One thing to check when buying your drive--check to see if it has its own version of the sudden motion sensor. Preferably, get one without, since the MBP has its own sudden motion sensor built in. (This can be disabled if you happen to get a drive that has one.)
Good luck! -

I had a new hard drive replaced in my imac. Now my 1st generation apple TV does not appear under devices in itunes. How do I get my apple tv to connect to my computer? My OS is 10.6.8
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can't doing anything abouty this, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted. -
I had to get my hard drive replaced from Apple, I lost all of my music obviously. My question is, how can I get all my music off of my iPhone onto iTunes? Since it's a new hard drive, the iPhone isn't recognizing this as it's home computer.
You will need to use third-party software to transfer music from your phone to the iTunes Library. I recommend Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac | Macroplant.com.

I have just had my Toshiba laptop hard drive replaced. This has resulted in all previous content held on the laptop to be lost. I wanted to try and transfer my music library from my ipad to the laptop, but it will not allow me to do so. The message is that the ipad is linked to another computer and it will only allow the transfer of the items purchased on through the ipad and nothing else. Does anyone know if the full library can be transferred back to the computer?
You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before. -
