URGENT : Update OS to Maverick, won´t restart
Recently updated the OS to Maverick. First thing I noticed is that the new OS does not recognize the RAID (internal disc raid + Apple Raid card).
Then I restarted the computer but it got stuck forever on a light grey screen. No beachball, no error. no nothing.
This is a 2009 (if I remember well) 4.1 Mac Pro, Dual 2.26 Quad Core Xeon processor, 32GB Ram, Apple Raid card, AJA Kona LHI video card.
I have a vital job in progress on this computer. It´s both in the RAID as well as a safety copy in the start up disc Macintosh HD.
Please advice on how to get this Mac started. One thing that comes to my mind is to disconnect the PCI Raid card and try restart, but I guess might mean to loss all the data.
Please advice, need urgent Help !!!!!
Have you tried safe mode boot: just pressing and holding shift key down with starting the machine (powering on), at least from the "chime" sound for a few seconds (when a progress bar start to show you can release the shift key)?
If that won't work, have you tried "single user mode" (Cmd+S) returning a black screen with white text (kinda startup log to show eventual problems)?
Can you start your Mac in "Recovery" mode (Cmd+R) if all above fails?
When all your machinery is switched off, taking out the RAID card should not make you lose any data. However, since the data is on the disks that are connected to the card you might not be able to see the data without the card being plugged in. But since you seem to have a safety copy, you might still access the data?
If you have good reason to suspect the card, taking it out might help to see your mac start again (without the volumes on the RAID disks though). But I would only do so when all above (safe mode, single user mode, recovery mode) fails. On my machines just starting up in safe mode, shutting down and then start the machine helped quite often, fortunately.
How does your Mac start (at all) without the RAID?

See if that restores life. If not an Apple store genius bar appointment may be needed.

Updated to OSX Mavericks, getting random restarts
Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, my late 2009 Macbook Pro restarts at least once every session, at random times, no matter what I am doing. Everything was working perfectly on 10.8, so I assume it is an issue my computer has with the new OS.
If anyone can help with this issue it would be appreciated, as I cannot trust my laptopto do work on when it restarts at any time.
The crash log is here:

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Alternatively, see:

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
Good luck,

Urgent: Open Directory stopped and won't restart
I got into work this morning and restarted the server. Now no one can connect to it. The Open Directory service has stopped and there is no button visible to restart it.
OD log says: Network transition occurred. Shutting down DirectoryService...
Any ideas? Monday morning and everyone's going to be baying for blood!

Mac won't restart during software update
I'm trying to install the 10.7.1 update. My Mac won't restart when I okay the restart -- it just goes to the log-in page. Suggestions? It's bad enough I lost info on on of my Lacie drives due to Lion. So now I can't update.
Thanks very much for any help you can provide.
OceanYikes -- "hosed"? One of my LaCie drives won't mount. I went to the Apple store last night and the "experts" said that a firmware update will be released at some point, but not everyone is having problems. I wonder if I should reinstall Lion to see if that would help reset everything.....
But then, that's for another thread (which I started but no one could supply an answer).
Thanks for your replies, baltwo. -
Mac won't restart after updating to OS X Mountain Lion
Mac won't restart after updating to OS X Mountain Lion. Please help?
Like what happens? Is it just spinning?
If you've waited sufficiently long (say 10 minutes) you could just hit the power button which will do the trick. A little more gentle would be to open a terminal window (if you can) and type 'sudo reboot' (without the quotes) and enter your password when it asks. That will do it too. -
New hard drive, fresh install of 10.6.3
Tried to update to 10.6.8
MacBook Pro (2006) won't restart to finish the update. It only turns off.
I can turn the machine back on, but the update has not been installed.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. There may be a redirect issue if an adware software has been
installed by accident or by intent; usually if someone goes to a
web site where questionable downloads of software are free,
there may be (included, added to) the packet you get, adware
or perhaps even malware.
So, if this is the case, the symptoms you say are part of this
experience may be related to an adware or other badware
running in the background. A 'cleanmymac' or 'mackeeper'
can also mess up a Mac computer, & they are not advised.
Several posts to the ASC discussions are about these kinds
of things and many point back to a user going to some web
site and downloading something. A click can do it.
A way to help find some evidence of certain kinds of add-ons
(outside of looking into the Browser's add-ons and see about
deleting those that relate to odd behavior, or badware) such
as adware, one could get and use this free utility & get a
report of general system info, and then post it online to see
if someone can spot some of the characteristics adware or
other malware may have included in the system.
There is another way to get a more lengthy report than etrecheck
as Linc Davis has posted, that uses more detailed effort on the
part of the user, in order to get a larger fuller report.
This is the short and easy way to look for a few clues that may
be addressed through using advice in TheSafeMac guide.
•EtreCheck: (also click on read-more)
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
The report from the above may be helpful along with info in the
site below. Note there are other guides in TheSafeMac, too.
•Adware Removal Guide:
http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/
Hopefully the issue with the browser can be resolved in one
of up to three/four different ways, depending on what it is.
PS: recent updates to some OS X versions, etc do not
include update to Snow Leopard; only later systems.

Macbook Pro won't restart while updating 10.6.0 - 10.6.8
Hello all,
I'm having trouble updating my Macbook Pro 13 inch from 2009.
Yesterday I turned my Macbook Pro on for the first time in 2 years and I want to bring some life in it.
It still had the version 10.5.8 which I updated with a usb to 10.6.
Now I want to update my OS X version from 10.6.0 to 10.6.8. I've downloaded the files by clicking on ''software update'' through ''about my mac''.
It now asks for a reboot, so it will install the updates. However, the macbook won't restart.
I click on restart and all it does is show very short a blue screen and then I see my background with only my mouse cursor which I can still move around. All of the applications and toolbars are gone and I can wait an hour and it will still be in the same position. So I have to force the shutdown by holding the power button... And when I turn it back on, it didn't install anything.
Can someone please help me out?
Kind regards!Manually DL and install the 10.6.8 COMBO update.

Tried to update my computer to the new iTunes and it won't restart.
Two days ago I installed the new iTunes update. It asked me to restart my computer but I was working on something and put it off. I noticed the icon on my toolbar for iTunes was messed up so I clicked on it and a message came up saying something along the lines of "windows cannot find this program." I thought nothing of it, turned of my computer and the next day my computer won't start. We've tried restarting in safe mode, restore to last good configuration, and a windows repair and nothing is working. It always gets stuck on the Windows start up screen and I don't know what else to do. Has anyone else had this problem or knows a way to fix it? I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and I'm using Windows 7.
