Urgently need answers to Q's before I get a MacBook

I've been having PMU issues with my 12" iBook G4 and Apple has offered to try and repair it OR replace it with a 13" MacBook. I've been given a week to make up my mind. I'm leaning towards going with the MacBook, but to be honest, I'm concerned about a number of issues.
What is BootCamp and what does it allow me to do?
I find that I still need to use a couple of OS 9 applications (Photoshop4, by choice, Simpletext, also by choice, and Pagemeaker 6.5 Out of necessity until i figure out how to convert my PM files to another program.)
Since Classic/OS9 will not work on the MacBooks, I'm in a quandry.
An Apple employee told me about SheepShaver (an Open Source program) and that it will emulate a PowerPC chip and older OS (system 7 to 9.0.4) on the MacBooks. I downloaded it, but the installation instructions seem to be written for a programmer (I'm NOT). It says I need an original install disk of the OS I want to run (which I have) and a ROM, but give no instruction on whae that is or where to get it. The developer has not returned my emails, and I'm on a time deadline to make my decision (not to mention my iBook keeps blinking out)
Does anyone have experience with, or knowledge of this program, or another workaround for my need for OS 9?
I'm also curious if anyone has specific issues with running older Software using Rosetta, specifically MS Office X (the first version for OS X), Photoshop CS, AOHell (to access files and bookmarks, not to actually log in using it), or Quicken 2003.
And on the topic of reliability (I've heard about the overheating problems for one) HAve they worked out the kinks now in the newer ones? How do I find out when the one I will get was made? How many weeks has it been now since the MacBooks were introduced?
And one more really minor question. I've been offered the Mid-range 13" mAcBook (white, with the superdrive) and I'm thinking of paying the extra $200 to upgrade to the Black one, but for $200 it seems like all I get is 20 more gig of HD space, and a black case! Are here anyother differneces between the two?
I've heard that the black case shows fingerprints and stuff badly ( worse than the white because it's a "matte" finish) and from my experience with my white iBook, It gets pretty dirty quickly and seems to hold the dirt around the edges.
Have they changed the plastics on the White MacBook to help prevent this, or is it the same plastic that was used in the iBooks (it looks the same)
Thanks so much for you patience in reading all this , and for answering all my questions (even if they seem stupid : )
Robert

I'll try to answer a few -
Boot Camp is a boot manager - it's like pressing the option key when you boot so that you can choose which disk to start up from, except that it understands other OS's too. With Boot Camp you can partition your hard drive and install a second operating system on the new partition, and Boot Camp will ask you which one to use each time you start up.
I've used Adobe CS under Rosetta and havent found anything broken yet. Office 2004 works fine, but haven't tried Office X. The others I haven't tried, but I have found occassional wonkiness in other apps under rosetta, so it's definitely worth researching.
I have a week 26 MBP 17", and everything is fine after two weeks. They do run fairly hot if that's a problem for you, even the ones that aren't overheating. I had a Toshiba notebok P4 2ghz that ran hotter and was fine, though, so I think running hot comes with the territory on these.
You can tell what week yours was manufactured in by looking at the 4th and 5th characters in your serial number. The 1st and 2nd characters are a manufacturing location code ( Shanghai, etc. ), and the 3rd character is the year I believe.
My reading tells me that MBP quality is improving, but it's worth it for you research this personally.
I don't use a MacBook and I'm not sure of the differences between the models, but I have read about a lot of people using the "InvisibleShield" product to protect the outer surfaces. I've been looking at that for my MBP, it seems like a good product though a bit pricey.
Hope these helped, maybe someone else will come along with better answers to your other questions. Personally, I'd do the upgrade, although the Pagemaker issue will need sorting out.

here is how i find myself as a computer user...
i use a computer everyday as a college student... a lot of microsoft programs and internet usage...
occasionally i use netflix but i find myself hooking it up to a tv if i watch or stream off my comp
here is my issue why do i need a retina if i can watch most things on tv now that they have internet integrated such as netflix youtube.
so what would be more useful more hard drive space with 8gb of ram or less harddrive space with faster processor
thank you in advance as this is my first post

I had the same question as I was starting grad school and my old MacBook Pro was just getting too tired and slow.
I visited the Apple store and spoke with four different employees and they each came to the same conclusion- separately- that the Pro was the way to go.
If you upgrade your flash like you mentioned you might want to do with the Air that's great, but with the pro upgrading your flash automatically upgrades your RAM as well, doubling you from 4 to 8. I kept going back and forth over what to do because the difference in price was significant, but ultimately more RAM makes for a much faster machine and it will work better, longer. It would most likely buy me another year or more of a well working machine over the Air.
Cost was definitely a factor me as well, but I was able to use the Education pricing, and I chose to buy refurbished.
Also, in terms of portability, the difference in weight is only half a pound. My roommate has the Air and I honestly feel no difference when I'm carrying hers or mine in my school bag. I'm really happy that I went with the Pro with Retina because even though I probably don't use half of the amazing features available on it, I always have the option to. Plus, not being much of a techie I have so much flash storage that I don't need to bother with my external hard drive anymore other than to backup my files. Really, really glad that I listened to the Geniuses!

  • Should I change ISP before configuring a new MacBook?

I'm fed up with the expense and the attendant junkmail from my Demon account and would like to change ISPs. Is it best to do this before confuguring my newly-purchased (and unopened )MacBook ... or doesn't it make any difference? Any suggestions as to the most Mac-friendly ISPs?

Unless you are able to testing your ADSL connection after a change and before you get your MacBook you may find yourself having to possibly battle any issues on two fronts… is the ADSL connection or is it the MacBook.
I would ensure you have a stable and consistent connection before your MacBook arrives. That way you have one less thing to worry about.

    Chester31,
Thank you very much for sharing your file with us!  Now that we are able to reproduce the problem at our end, you may stop sharing the file on Acrobat.com.
Do you know when this problem (for not being able to add new highlight/strikeout/underline) has started?  Did you update your iOS from 7.x to 8.0 recently?
We will continue investigating the problem and let you know what we find.
Thank you again for your help.

  • Software Updater comes on, states that I urgently need this update. Yet when I agree the s/w update server connection goes on an on but do not seem to connect. What is the problem?

I have a Dell PC. This Software Updater comes on saying I need to update . I states that I urgently need this update! Norton says okay. I go ahead and approve. Then it start...updater connecting to update server... and it goes on an on and on. until I turned it off.
I have done that several times. I have even left it on to go on about my business. But apparently it hasn't unloaded anything because it keeps coming back on when I start up my computer.
    Is this your updater?

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Macbook pro connects to wifi via safari but IE has connection problems. Has always been fine but recently stopped working. Urgently need to sort it out. Please help.

I have been running Rushcliff Private Practice Software (PPS) in a Windows environment using Parallels on a macbook pro for months. Everything has been working well. PPS needs an internet connection to allow synchronisation with colleagues using the same software.
Over the last 2 weeks, I keep losing the IE connection but am still able to connect to Wifi using Safari and other PCs.
Please can someone help? Urgently need to resolve the problem.
    Many thanks.

Your issues are with notebook, not a workstation tower, and with Parallels and Windows. Maybe with Lion thrown in.
Hopefully you know where Parallels forums are and also that you installed Windows natively first on its own partition so you can test and run it direction rather than as a VM only as well as that sometimes takes the VM out of the equation.

Anything that was on the phone is already gone. You have no choice but to restore. If you were backing up and syncing the phone on a regular basis, you should be able to restore your backup with minimal data loss.

Last version I had before CS5 was/is Illustrator 10,which has been installed on new computer.
CS5 install says I need CS2,3 or 4 before installing 5, but old computer went directly from 10 to CS5.
How can I repeat this 10 to CS5 install?

It does not seem likely that CS6 was upgraded from version 10.  You might want to check your purchase history in your Adobe account to see if there is some missing link in the chain of purchases you made.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The latest OS X version is OS X 10.8.3, so first check that you can use OS X Mountain Lion. First, check that your Mac supports Mountain Lion > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs If it's compatible, open the App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. While it's being downloaded, make a backup of your files and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
When the download finishes, the OS X installer will appear, so follow the steps. After upgrading, you will have 10.8.3.
If your Mac isn't compatible with Mountain Lion, check that you can run Lion > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4949 If you can run OS X Lion, call Apple to purchase it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 After upgrading to Lion, you will have 10.7.5.
To set up iCloud after upgrading, open System Preferences > iCloud. Read > http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup

Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.
