URL bar & Full screen

In Safari is there a way to make it Full Screen? Also when I click the url bar I have to click it twice. Is there a way to set it so that I only click once like in FF?

Hi John,
AFAIK there is no way to make Safari full screen natively. I use MegaZoomer which works for the foremost window in any application. And very useful it is too! I haven't (yet) found any issues with Safari 5 and I didn't uninstall it before the update.
Megazoomer does require SIMBL to work, but again, no apparent issues with Safari 5.
Re the tool bar, one click on the Favicon selects the whole url for replacing.
Good luck,
Adrian

  • Odd behavior during full screen video chat with Mountain Lion Messages?

I've recently upgraded to Mountain Lion on two MacBook Pros (from Lion) and have started to use the new Messages app. I've been using iChat for years and found it reliable for the most part.
However, I've noticed a new behavior that seems like a bug in the new Messages app.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Open Messages app
    2. Initiate a non-FaceTime video chat via the Buddy List or the main Messages window video button
    3. Once the video is started, click on the Full Screen button in the window title bar or in the black toolbar at the bottom of the video
    4. After the video has gone full screen, move the mouse cursor
    5. At this point, the video will slide over (like a Mission Control / Exposé space). The video chat is actually STILL running in full screen view as a dedicated space -- you can slide back with the trackpad or the keyboard as per normal Mission Control controls.
Step 5 is NOT the correct behavior as per OS X 10.7 Lion. Not to mention, the black toolbar is unusable and it's hard to reach the menu bar Full Screen toggle button since moving the cursor even one pixel makes the screen slide over.
Has anyone experienced this? If yes, is there a solution? How do we bring this to Apple's attention for a future fix?

I got the machine to reboot but I had to hold down the power button. I found an article on macworld that said to use the command +control+eject buttons to restart but no go. Nothing.
There really... REALLY ought to be some way to exit full screen in such a case.

  • If you view Firefox in full screen can you get favourite toolbar to appear with the address bar?

When you put Firefox in full screen all the toolbars disappear. When you hover over the top of the screen the address bar and 'open tabs' bar appear. Is it possible to get the favourites toolbar to appear as well?
If not is there any other way to access favourites without having to close Firefox?

You can also toggle that setting if you hover the mouse to the top and right click a toolbar to open the toolbar context menu: Hide Toolbars.
That won't show the bookmarks toolbar AFAIK even if it is selected. You can access the bookmarks via the Bookmarks menu button if you place that button on a visible Navigation Toolbar or Tab bar.
Add code to userChrome.css below the @namespace line to make the Bookmarks toolbar visible in full screen mode.

  • Safari 6.0.1 Truncates URLs in Non Full Screen Mode

I just applied the Java removal patch that Apple released and I noticed that all URLs now get truncated to subdomain.domain.extension. For example, if I go to store.apple.com/us my URL bar only shows store.apple.com. If I go to full screen mode it shows store.apple.com/us. The trailing "/us" is gray, not black, but it shows. This is occurring with all of the sites I visit.
I created a new user and logged on with the newly created user's profile and attempted the same test. The results were exactly the same.
What can I do to see the entire URL in window mode?
    Windowed mode:
    Full screen mode:

I have had the new Safari for less than 1/2 hour and I'm already switching to Google Chrome. The new Safari not only grays out URLs inexplicably, but also, and this is SUPER annoying, when I click on a link on Facebook, it takes me out of FB to the link, but grays out the "back" arrow so I can't even return to where I was on FB. ***?

  • Why can't I launch another app using a URL scheme in a web clip set up through Configurator with the "full screen app" option selected?

My company uses web clips on iOS devices, set up through profiles on Configurator, for EVERYTHING. Most of these web clips have a transfer function on the site that allows the user to bring up other apps, like directions to a destination in Google Maps for instance (a URL scheme.) If the option for the web clip to appear as a "full screen app" is selected in Configurator (or iPhone Configuration Utility), this fuction does not work on devices that are running iOS 7. It is imparative to our company that the web clips be full page so there is no address bar, back button, etc. for the users to access. With this feature not working, I have 50+ iOS devices that are usless to us.
iOS 6 Device --> Configurator 1.3 --> Full Screen Web Clip --> WORKS
iOS 6 Device --> Configurator 1.4 --> Full Screen Web Clip --> WORKS
iOS 6 Device --> iPhone Configuration Utility --> Full Screen Web Clip --> WORKS
    iOS 7 Device --> Configurator 1.3 --> Full Screen Web Clip -->  DOESN'T WORK
    iOS 7 Device --> Configurator 1.4 --> Full Screen Web Clip --> DOESN'T WORK

iOS 7 Device --> Configurator 1.4 --> NOT Full Screen Web Clip--> WORKS
iOS 7 Device --> iPhone Configuration Utility --> NOT Full Screen Web Clip --> WORKS
    Somebody, please help!

Phil,    I have been trying to figure out a solution to this problem since iOS 7 came out. In hindsight, I should have downloaded the beta versions of the iOS so I would have had even more time. I have talked with quite a few different developers and up until today it was a consensus that this was a "feature" of iOS in an attempt by Apple to diminish the use of webapps. Now most of these people wouldn't be considered apple apologists by any stretch, which could have contributed to their pessimism.    That being said, today I finally received some news that could give us a glimmer of hope. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone today being sent "up the ladder" until I think I found the right person to help (I'm not complaining; I was surprised at how competent and helpful each person that I spoke with was, and I didn't have to explain the situation over and over again.) I think what took so long finding the right person to speak with was that this isn't an issue that any type of troubleshooting would fix. It's not an iPad, iPhone, or even an Apple Configurator issue; it's actually a bug in iOS 7.    Anyways, the senior engineer that I spoke with reassured me, very adamantly, that this was not a feature of the new operating system and most definitely a bug. He said that they take webapps very seriously and are actually looking for ways to improve how webapps work on iOS devices and how they are used with Mobile Device Management software, like Configurator.    I was a little concerned that he said this was the first he or anyone on his team has heard about this problem, but he did work extensively with me today and said that it looks to be a major issue, and something that he and his team are going to try to figure out as soon as possible. He said he would be calling me by Tuesday with information on how and when this will be fixed.     Jon

  • Safari always auto-hide bars, always: also in normal screen mode (not full-screen, which is when autohide happens)

Bookmark bar is auto hidden in fullscreen mode, how to keep same functionality in normal mode out of full-screen?
In full-screen I just have the main toolbar showing, which is how I want it all the time. This or either make "full-screen" a lot better.

Hmm, i think i phrased original question badly, i am looking for auto-hide to be featured in normal window mode as well as fullscreen, and whatever else designers and programmers can dream up and not execute poorly.
I have now disabled all EXTENSIONS and removed all 3rd party bars (google, sharethis, never used nayway;) and as my suspicions confirmed Safari is running much better. I was very suspicious of this when it was added as it seemed like trying to match Firefox, which I also gave up some time ago in place of Chrome as my second browser, although I use Safari for 90%. The extensions i think causes freezing when i had Parallels running a Windows VM at the same time and also other times when not.
The extensions is a bit stupid in my opinion as any niggling, minor feature of a website should be addresses to the website rather than the browser. Where adverts are concerned, well, just use the web less or more specifically!
I think I'm fine with Toolbar/URL-search and bookmark bar, its great - simple and not intrusive. I believe EXTENSIONS introduction gave me some sort of weird mental outlook and would urge Apple to be more careful in bringing in different types of features unnecessarily.

  • How to remove status bar at bottom of browser when in full screen mode

We have an application that runs in full screen mode for public display, so having the status bar pop-up at the bottom of the screen is distracting when it moves between pages is distracting and detracts from the user experience.
How do I disable the status bar so that it no longer pops up when the browser is in full screen mode?

Or do you mean the floating message that describes the current activity of the browser (for example, Waiting...) or shows the URL of the currently hovered link?
That can be suppressed using custom style rules. Here is an example of a past thread on how you might do that:
[https://support.mozilla.org/questions/976248 How do I disable the link address popup at bottom of the page?]
That was as of Firefox 25. Does it still work in Firefox 30?

  • How can I configure my Macbook Air to always show the menu bar when in full-screen?  I hate, hate, hate it popping up and then going away all the time.

I cannot find a way to change this in System Preferences.  When I have applications open full screen, my menu bar disappears.  Then when I try to move between tabs, I find it is always popping up & then disappearing.  I really just want to set up my computer so that the menu bar always displays in the foreground. I find this popping up & disappearing intrusive and annoying.  How can I fix this?  I hate, hate, hate this about my MAC...
I have searched the full User Guide, Quick Start Guide, etc.  and cannot find a way to fix this.

Don't use the full screen arrow in the top right corner of the window.  Instead, use the green + in the top left corner.  That takes the window full screen just below the menu bar.

When I make the page full screen and move my cursor to the top of the page, the bar drops down and I can use it. I've tried restarting my computer, didn't work. Help!

Well I figured it out, right click the arrow that makes the screen bigger and unclick the Hide Toolbar. I knew it couldn't be that hard.

  • All that comes up when I open Firefox are my toolbars and a place to enter a URL, but there is no window. I have to enter full screen mode to view websites.

Something happened with Firefox where all that comes up when I open Firefox are my toolbars and a place to enter a URL, but there is no window. I have to enter full screen mode to view websites. How do I get back to a regular browsing window? I have no idea how this even happened.

    Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • How do I turn off the automatic full screen feature that makes the top bar (with the minimize buttons) disappear?

I just downloaded Firefox 4 on a Dell laptop with WinXP. When I'm in a browser window the window resizes automatically and the bar at the top (with the minimize, full and close buttons) disappears. When I drag the cursor up to the top the window resizes again and that top bar appears. Makes me crazy. How do I turn it off?

I'm not aware of the behavior you're describing. I've never seen it, and just tested it for myself. I cannot get windows to zoom to full screen just from moving them to or along the top of the screen. Is this only happening in Photoshop? If so, it may be a Photoshop issue. If not, have you installed any kind of third-party software that might be doing that? Try rebooting in safe mode and see if the problem persists then. If it doesn't, but comes back when you reboot normally, the problem is caused by some third-party software you have installed.

  • How do I get black side bars on a full screen photo in iPhoto 11

How do I get black side bars on a full screen photo in iPhoto 11. It was black in iPhoto 09 and now it's a murky grey. I'm not talking about events or photo view where it's in preferences only full screen photo. Thanks

Go into iPhoto's Appearance preference pane and move the Background slider all the way to the left - black.

  • Just want to ask about the full screen icon that used to be on the play bar but seems to have disappeared since upgrade to mountain lion, any way to get it back?

Since upgrading to mountain lion I've noticed the full screen icon which used to be on the playback bar in quicktime has gone, I know you can go to the menus to make it full screen but if you're watching something online like with apple trailers I can't seem to make them fullscreen anymore, is it me or have they just taken this option away now?

I've been playing the trailers in my browser and the full screen option has gone for me,
As already stated, the icon was replaced by the "Share" pop-up menu icon in the same location.
and the command-f keys don't work either when I'm playing in a browser and it's truly only been since I upgraded to mountain lion.
Strange! It works for me. Here is a link to a screen recording of me wayching a trailer in Safari and later watching a trailer download. In both cases the trailer could be expsnded for full screen viewing and then reduced back to the size of the original 720p player display screen. If you can't do this then you may have a player problem also.

Why did apple make these changes when they worked perfectly the old way, I mean if it ain't broke don't fix it!
Only Apple whould know for sure but my guess would be that other users may have requested the "Share" pop-up more. Makes no difference to me because I normally use the key shortcuts anyway.

  • Any way to turn off Safari's full screen, auto hide tab bar mode?

FInally took the plunge and upgraded to iOS 8 on one of our i-devices.  Really like the Panorama camera mode-- well done, Apple!
However, I was staggered to find that Safari now hides the tab bar as soon as you start scrolling down a web page!  What's with that?  I guess lots people wanted a full screen mode.  OK, but for the rest of us, is there an option to turn off that mode and keep the tabs permanently visible?
With the new set up (now old to many of you), it takes 2 taps every time you want to close a tab or move to another one.  That gets old fast!  Plus, the animation each time is visually distracting and tiring and also gets tiresome.  My browsing involves a lot of switching among tabs, so this is a real step backwards.
Hope there's a work around!  Otherwise, we're going to have to leave our iPad Air at iOS 7!

Jim, appreciate the reply.  Yes, I have submitted it as feedback to Apple!
I also stumbled upon the tap at top... The scroll upwards, though, rarely works for me!  For example, here on this site one has to scroll down a long way, quickly.  (It gets confusing, doesn't it?  One slides down to scroll upwards!)
In browsing today, I realized that my habit is to come to the end of a story, then tap the close button on the tab bar, which takes me to the next tab and its story.   Now, under iOS 8, I end up having to tap, watch the animation, then locate the button, and tap again.  It doesn't sound like much, but it's a nuisance when one is moving from tab to tab reading news stories.
Of course, if I could wave a magic wand and fix just one thing about the iOS, it would be the incredibly lousy handling of contractions via auto-correct.  It virtually never works unless one slows their typing down to the speed of molasses!   I've used the feedback on that one, too, but iOS 8 in any of its incarnations has not fixed that!

  • Cs4 full screen mode w/ menu bar no longer can scroll picture off edges

In earlier versions' full screen mode with menu bar, if I zoom into a photo I can scroll the edge of the photo away from the windows edge, making it easier to select and work on the corners of the photo.
In cs4, I can't get that to work. Any ideas?

Works for me... What graphics card? Screen resolution? General computer info?
