If it contained an AT&T Micro-SIM then it is NOT an unlocked phone. It is locked to AT&T but was sold without a contractual obligation.
You can NOT use that phone. AT&T will NOT unlock iPhones for any reason.
There is a difference between a 'no contract' phone and an 'unlocked' phone. You have a 'no contract' phone.
Send it back to your friend in the USA. If they purchased it less than 30 days ago, they can return it for a refund and puchase the correct item. To the best of my knowledge, unlocked iPhone 4S's are not widely available at retail in the U.S. yet. A few people have reported being able to purchase them, but Apple has not announced widespread availability outside of the on-line store.

I bought an Iphone 5 and my husband an Iphone 4 in Australia a few years ago. We are staying in France for several months so just ordered a local SIM from a popular company which includes 3g and 4g mobile data. We have activated the SIM but the phone is only picking up 'E' which is too slow to do anything. It is not picking up 3g or 4g despite this being turned on in the settings. The wifi in our home is working well with the phones.
Are Australian iphones compatible with the French network or do we need to get new phones? Is there anything we can do in the settings to fix this problems?

You should not have to change your APN settings if you were able to connect previously.
What happens when you try to connect? Could it be a local signal issue? Are you able to call/text?

Turns out Safari "forces" the french web interface by using the 'hl=fr' code in the url. for example http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=fr
Evidently that overrides local settings, even if you're logged into your Google account.
So, since I can't modify the search query url in Safari without jb'ing my phone, I'd say this one's a bust.

Trouble connecting IPhone to my wireless network

I have recently experienced problems connecting my Iphone to my wireless network. I have had the phone for 3 months and this problem has only come up recently. Previously I had no problems connecting, and my girlfriend's Iphone can still get onto my network. I searched everywhere for an answer but most of them involved altering the router settings and since my gf's Iphone still connects, I don't believe it has anything to do with my router and or it's settings. I have reset my Iphone network settings before to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Discussions Boards.
Since your girlfriend's iPhone connects to the network OK, then it's probably not a configuration or security settings issue with your wireless network.
You mentioned you've reset network settings on the iPhone, have you also updated the iPhone to the current 2.2.1 software?
Have you actually powered the iPhone off (not just putting it to sleep) since this issue began?
Are you using any type of carrying case on the iPhone? One with a magnetic component?
Intermittent connectivity can be caused by cached data on your WiFi router or modem.
Try power cycling both your WiFi router and modem by actually removing the main power cord from both for several minutes (5 minutes will successfully reset all but the most stubborn device). Power up the modem first and wait until the LEDs are done with their startup dance. Power up the WiFi router.
If you have a VoIP modem from your cable company, it may have a backup battery inside that will prevent the modem from resetting even with main power removed. That battery is generally installed under a cover on the modem. Check with your ISP for information on removing the battery if that is the case.
Out-of-date firmware on your WiFi router can cause similar behavior. If you have a combination modem/WiFi router from your ISP, check with them for any firmware updates.
If all of the above do not resolve the issue, you may need to restore your iPhone:

What do you mean what should you do? Just because you don't want to pay too much for a phone, doesn't make the price any cheaper. If you can't afford the price of an unlocked phone, then you don't, or can't, buy one.

Then as you've tried resetting the phone, the next step is to restore it from the latest backup. If that doesn't work, restore it as new, and if that doesn't work take it to Apple.

Airport Express and iPhones can't see network-macs and ipad can?

I have an Airport Extreme base station connected to a comcast modem, with 2 express units for airtunes.
After some fiddling around due to the comcast outage, now I can't see either of the Airport Express units in the Airport Utility, AND neither my or my wife's iPhone can see the network. The iPad, iMac, Macbook and a PC can all connect no problem. My phone connects to wifi at work no problem.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Your settings should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
wireless Network Name = Name of your wireless network
Check mark not needed next to Allow this Network to be extended
Radio Mode = Automatic
Radio Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Backspace and retype your password here
Confirm Password = Backspace and retype your password
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
If you have a simple modem (only one ethernet port), the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to Share a public IP address
If you have a gateway (combination modem and router with 3-4 ethernet ports), the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to Off (Bridge Mode).
Update to save changes
Restart all other devices

Set TC and wireless names to short, no spaces, no special characters.. ie pure alphanumeric.
Lock the wireless to fixed channels.. only 2.4ghz matters.. as iphone cannot connect to 5ghz.
Try 6, 11 first then 1. I think bluetooth may be set to use lower channels.
That seems to have fixed it for most people.

I recently noticed that sometimes, my iphone 3g resets my network connection, on my MBP...?
it has been happening occasionally, for example: When syncing or updating I will remove the sim, and my macbook pro will lose its wireless connection for a second and my network hello message pops up...
What is the deal here? It has never been jailbroken, I have all up to date software.
I am not sure what is going on here, but it is not ok...
Bluetooth is off. everything else is set to default.

You should still be able to manually manage the music on your iPhone within iTunes. Make sure that when your iPhone is plugged in, look in the Summary tab to see if “Manually manage music and videos” is enabled and you can even you turn off Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected. My wife is having the exact same issue after updating to the new iOS 8.1.1 and we've tried all the same steps even restoring the phone as a new phone. We've contacted our service provider and they've told us to go to apple to potentially "remove" her serial number from their servers to allow it to work properly on the service we have. Your hotspot will be billed by AT&T or Verizon based on your iPhone's model. Only the iPhone 4 from Verizon would allow a Verizon hotspot. You can connect three devices that have WiFi. Verizon hotspots can connect five. Your speed should be about the same as the iPhone 4 browsing speed on 3G.
