USA Today Article - Battery Recall

So I caught the article in Tuesdays (Aug 15,2006) USA Today about Dell recalling laptop batteries. In the article it mentioned other companies included in the recall. Apple had 128,000 laptop batteries made in october 2004-may 2005. I was just wondering if anyone else had heard about this?
The issue at hand was that these batteries would get too hot and could cause a fire. Now I have not had a fire, but my powerbook sure does get toasty to say the least.
Any info on this would be great. thank you!
eric

PB = PowerBoook.
On the bottom, heat can be generated from the CPU, hard drive, and CD/DVD. That's why it's important not to use the PowerBook on anything soft, like a blanket, rather to keep it on a hard surface so air can circulate around it.
It's not unusual for a PowerBook to see temperatures into the 120 degree range, depending on what's processing and the heat of the room.

  • Defective Battery from Battery Recall

To whom it may concern at Apple:
One of my old laptops ( 15" Powerbook G4 ) was one of the thousands affected in the last battery recall incident.
Like many other users I filled out the necessary forms and I got the "non defective" battery replacement on the mail just a few days later. (This was about 4 - 5 months ago).
I then started using the new battery instead of the recalled one. I was supposed to mail the first battery and I never did, I put it in the shipping box and I kept postponing it till I forgot about it.
I'm sure I'm not the first one, but today I am glad I didn't.
A few months ago I got a mac book pro, so I was going to sell my Powerbook, but I noticed that this "new non defective battery" stop re charging, just like that, quick it stopped working, I can't use my computer unless I leave it plugged to the charger or my previous "recalled battery" Now, keep in mind that I had this first battery (the recalled one) since I bought the computer almost 3 years ago (2 years and 10 months to be exact) and the battery still works perfect.
No big deal I thought, the $349 I have spent on the apple care extension program will bring me "peace of mind", so I went to my local Apple Store were after running a test on the battery in question the store technician told me that the battery can't be replaced if its over 300 cycles (this number was never voiced before until he told me that the battery had around 320 cycles.
So just in case, he decided to run a test on my other battery (the recalled one) which I brought to the store with the only intention to show that the computer worked perfect with that battery.
So this test came to the magic number of 500 cycles, and still works perfectly.
    So just to remind you:
    Old recalled battery:
Over 500 cycles: Almost 3 years in use: Working perfectly today.
    New replacement battery:
A bit over 300 Cycles: 4 months of use: Currently not working.
Can someone explain to me how come the number of cycles is so close, yet the actual time of usage is clearly far apart?
Can you even reach 300 cycles in 4 months?
Let me state that I have never dropped the battery, it has not a single scratch on it, it looks brand new.
So now, I have to pay $125 for a battery that I received as a replacement of a "defective battery" (that still works perfectly) to replace this new "non defective battery that died on my in only 4 months, as a loyal Apple customer from many years (since 1995) I feel cheated, I feel abused and I find this to be unfair.
When I first bough the computer in question (brand new at the apple store) it had 1 dead pixel on the screen, 1 month later I realized that, and I took it to the store, they said "you need to have 7 dead pixels in order for us to repair your screen". Computer was under warranty, I bought it brand new, it was clearly a manufacturing mistake, and they said they cant help me, (I bought a refurbished laptop before that, with not a single problem, yet something new at the store (sold at a higher price) comes defective) how can something like this happen? I don't know, but you know what I counted it as my loss, and eat it. But I am tired of being pushed around, always that SKETCHY number (7 pixels, 300 cycles) there is always an excuse for the warranty not to work.
This is not about the money, (remember I have the "so called defective battery" still working perfectly), this is about principle.
My battery is defective you should either fix, it or replace it with one that works, that is what I have my extended warranty for.
    I am extremely disappointed.

Hi, Miguel. You make a pretty good argument for yourself, but Apple isn't going to read it here. These are user-to-user forums, not user-to-Apple forums. You need to take this up with Applecare, and keep asking to have it escalated to the next level, if you're going to get anywhere with it.
It does seem highly improbable — but not impossible — that your new battery went through 300 charge cycles in 4 months. That would be about 2-1/2 cycles per day.

  • Usa today videos all play simultaneously

This is very peculiar. If I'm on the USA Today site, and read an article, then go back to the home page, all of a sudden any and every video clip within USA Today starts to run. It is impossible to stop them unless I close that tab
    Anyone else have this issue?

  • USA Today freezes now after I loaded OS 8 last night.

I loaded the new version of the iPad operating system last night and USA Today app stopped working.  It hangs up.  It shows as a cloud in the app store where all other apps I've seen have a price or show free.  I've downloaded several times.  I got it to working on my wife's ipad mini but it was by accident.  Can't get it to work on the iPad.  I've tried the signing out signing in and downloading but it seems as if the touch screen no longer works.  Sometimes after a few seconds the home screen returns.  Please help.  I like USA Today.

    Hello there, rombertfromst. augustine.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great steps that help when an application isn't functioning as expected or quits unexpectedly.
With the "Restart" step, make sure you go through and close all applications that are running. If after performing the "Restart" step, you find the issue persists, try the reset portion of the instructions:
iOS: An app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
If the issue continues unresolved, you may want to follow these instructions:
Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

  • Battery Recall & Stored Contacts Info

I am new to cell phones. I have had my first one
for several months, a Nokia model 1112.
The just-announced battery recall for the 1112 and
many other Nokia models brings up some questions:
    1) Is there any reason why I would want to have the
info for my Contacts stored either: on the phone or on
the SIMS card? (The two options given to me by my phone.)
    2) Is there some reason why I get a message stating:
Selected Memory Empty -- no matter whether I try to
change the Contacts from the Phone to the SIMS card or
vice-versa (from the SIMS card to the Phone)?
    3) Will removing the battery to get the ID number from
it in order to put the number into the Battery Recall form
on the Nokia website result in my Contacts info being lost?
    4) And finally, Nokia says only some batteries have
the overheating problem. Does anyone know anything
about this aspect of the recall?
    Thanks a lot, Sunny

1: The SIM card can only hold simple name-number pairs, and fewer contact records in total (usually 250 with today's SIM cards, I think). In phone memory you can have more contacts, and with more complex structure (postal addresses, business addresses, multiple numbers, web and email addresses, etc.).
2: I don't know. One or the other is presumably empty, or the phone has a software glitch if it thinks so incorrectly.
3: No. Contacts on SIM or in phone memory are stored in non-volatile storage (and an empty or removed battery will not have an effect).
4: All that's announces is on the website:

  • Battery Recall - Form Page Updated

    Good news.
Lots of people - including phone support staff - have been having a difficult time with the battery recall webpage (staff relied on page as well):
iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 Battery Recall
The serial numbers of the batteries seemed to return misleading results on the form. The discription and guide advised some people (me included) that their batteries did indeed need to be replaced; After entering their numbers dilligently and correctly, the battery's serial number returned a negative non-qualifying response.
Many people supposed that the form on the webpage was incorrect and checking against the wrong list in a database.
The good news is that those people need not worry any longer. The list of qualifying serial numbers has been updated! Those people who were returning negative results (hypothesis based on my own results only) will probably see that their nubers are now NOT on the list any longer:
    12-inch iBook G4 A1061
    ZZ338 - ZZ427
    3K429 - 3K611
    6C519 - 6C552 ending with S9WA, S9WC or S9WD
    12-inch PowerBook G4 A1079
    ZZ411 - ZZ427
    3K428 - 3K611
    15-inch PowerBook G4 A1078 and A1148
    3K425 - 3K601
6N530 - 6N551 ending with THTA, THTB, or THTC
    6N601 ending with THTC
congratulations to the newly dis-included. untether thyselves and resume living with wireless abandon.
    iBook G4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It is good that Apple updated the displayed information, and also good that they seem to have updated some of the backend database, also.
For example, ONE of my two batteries repeatedly failed to validate yesterday, but validated easily today, indicating a change 'behind the scenes' for at least some of the "ZZ" series.
What I see as a potential problem is some of those folks whose batteries would not validate initially being told that their batteries were OK to keep using and not a part of the recall.
If those batteries were in the series that incorrectly failed to validate on the first day, those customers could be left with the potentially hazardous batteries from having the Customer Support folks telling them to ignore the recall on their batteries.

  • Multiple Batteries and Battery Recall Program

    Hi,
I've just been on vacation, and while I was on holiday I found out about the battery recall program. Since I wanted to save time waiting for a new battery I entered my Powerbook serial # and the battery # into the recall website. Both of these were accepted and I received a confirmation email.
I have a 2nd battery that I use on long-haul flights (ie USA) but did not take this to Europe (I'm from the UK). Now that I have returned home I have found this battery is also covered by the recall programme. I've tried to enter this battery's serial # into the website but since I've already entered the Powerbooks serial # for the previous battery it doesn't let me order a replacement battery...
I'm confused why this should happen as multiple batteries are allowed for on the web form...
    How should I proceed...?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
I believe you can call Apple, as well as enter the information on the web.

  • Laptop Battery Recall

We will soon get details about a laptop battery recall due to FIRE. I already had to send mine back due to failure, but that is better than FIRE.
    Stay tuned!

    For what it's worth...
Here is an Apple bulletin regarding defective batteries so check it out to see if your battery(s) are affected. When I first reviewed this article, I removed and inspected my battery for the first time after more than 4-months of ownership and sure enough, mine was in the list.
    Excerpt:
"The affected batteries have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC. To view the model and serial numbers located on the bottom of the battery, you must remove the battery from the computer. The battery serial number is located above the barcode. See photos below. Only batteries within the noted serial number ranges need to be exchanged."

    1. Make sure that the "ACTION" sttribute in the FORM is pointing to the right URL.
    2. Make sure that the SUBMIT button is inside the FORM tags, then make sure that the SUBMIT button is in the same FORM as the Text Fields .

  • I Tune is not recognizing my new Ipod Nano that I received as a replacement due to the battery recall.  Any ideas how to get it to recognize my device?

I recently received my replacement Ipod nano for the battery recall earlier this year.  I went to go register it, yada yada and ITune wont recognize the device.  I have no idea what to do now.  I have tried 3 different cords and still nothing.  Any suggestions?  I am totally frustrated.
    Thanks

Did you receive a 1st gen replacement or 6th gen replacement?

  • Can't download files -even the support center's remote login appl won't download;  web sites like USA Today will not open; etc.

This all started by certain sites not opening, like USA Today; Intellicast.com.  Installed Maverics yesterday successfully and the web sites very briefly worked and then starting failing again.  Called tech support and couldn't download their remote login code.  From Safari's viewpoint thought there might be a problem with Adobe Flash.  So deleted that and then tried to download the installer code from Adobe and that wouldn't download.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

Firefox can find plugins in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" plugin folder so older installers like the Microsoft Windows Media Plugin no longer drop the DLL file in the correct location.
There apparently are two ways to address this:
    (1) Change a Firefox preference so that Firefox checks the old location. Here's how:
    (i) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(ii) In the filter box, type or paste '''plugins''' and pause while the list is filtered
(iii) Double-click '''plugins.load_appdir_plugins''' to switch its value from false to true.
This will take effect after you restart Firefox.
    (2) Copy the plugins folder to the new location. Here's how on Win 7 64-bit:
Open a Windows Explorer window to:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Right-click and copy the '''Plugins''' folder
Double-click the '''browser''' folder to open it
    Right-click and paste
Right-click the new copy of '''Plugins''' and rename it to '''plugins'''
After restarting Firefox, the plugins in that folder should now be available.
''Edit: I suggest just doing #1.''

  • Battery recall program

We have some batteries with the batteries error (see http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=BATT-LENOVO). We have recalled the affected batteries and get a confirmation number that was in November 2007. Since this time point we wait or the replacement battery
We tried to connect the support center at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4HWSE3, but they know nothing about battery recall program and can not help.
Now, I don't know which service number I can call or mail address, which is responsible for this battery program. Does anyone know a contact for this battery program? Have I any chance to get new batteries?

    Guten Tag Ewa,
I just went to the following link:  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=100&template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FhotNewsLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo
put in the information about my machine, and went to the Product Recalls page, and there they talk about the battery recall program (which you can get in German if you like).
I needed to have the battery replaced in two machines, and it did take a while, but I kept after it and got them eventually.  Good luck.  Post again if you don't get results.
