Usability of Iphone - Why is it different?
Hi,
As an Iphone user, can you please explain what is so special about Iphone that sets it apart from other Touchscreen devices. I would like to hear from a user perspective/point of view. I am writing a paper on touchscreens, and your insights/feedback would be appreciated.

After being a user of several WinMo phones over the years, I can honestly say that the iPhone is light years ahead - in most respects! - of any other phone I have used or owned.
It is difficult to say exactly why, but I think the simple truth is that it does everything in a very intuitive way. There is nothing it does that can't be done on other phones, it's just that it does everything much better. The touchscreen actually works well unlike almost every other phone I've used. It is effortless.
Connectivity, emails, SMS, MMS, syncing with MobileMe and iDisk, etc. etc. all work like a dream.
The games are great as well when you've got the time, and the app store is probably the biggest selling point, and the fact that it has an iPod Touch built-in.
What more could you want? Well, IMO opinion, the only down sides are that it doesn't behave like a mobile device in Explorer or Finder, although I see why Apple have designed it that way. It does make sense once you get used to the idea. There are one or two other niggles, but best to leave them for the moment.

I noticed while in my local Apple store today that their iPhone 4's have a higher Model # in their Settings --> About screen. When I compare mine vs. theirs, why is my Model # lower?
My biggest fear is that Apple will secretly correct the hardware issues on the iPhone 4 & screw over everyone who bought it early by not doing a recall since it would cost them an arm & a leg.

One forum in Canada listed 8 batch numbers of iPhones residing in their country with the last code of "C/A". Mine is "LL" for some reason in the USA. I would have thought it would be "US" but there is probably a more detailed thread on this code choice by Apple.

When going to the gym and launching find my iphone- why does it show 3 different addresses and streets blocks away and then if I move in the building to another area it shows exactly where the phone is?

Do you mean the A number, or the M number?
The GSM iPhone 4 is A1332, the CDMA iPhone 4 is A1349, the global iPhone 4S is A1387, and the China-only iPhone 4S is A1431.

My colleague recently synched his phone and now has a full keyboard on the lock screen. My lock screen keypad is set up like phone keys (alphanumeric). He's wondering why his is different, and he also now cannot unlock it. Anyone have this happen? He came to me yesterday and I noticed that his iPhone 4 still had old software (version in the 4's), so I advised him that he needed to synch it up to get the iOS 5.1.1 version. He synched and now can't get back in. He was entering his passcode on the lock screen (which wasn't taking) and I noted to him that his screen didn't look like mine. Anyone know how to fix this issue, or does he have to do a full restore?
He has set up a complex password instead of a simple passcode for his phone. If he doesn't know what it is, he'll have to restore. There is no way around a forgotten passcode.

Two iPhones FaceTimes Interfaces Appear Differently
My husband and I got 2 iPhone 5Cs a few days ago. They are virtually identical except that his is green w/32 GB and mine is pink w/16 GB. Same iOS, same build. But what is strange is that when we both bring up FaceTime > Contacts, his list of contacts is white text against a blurry darkened background video of whatever the camera is pointing at. Mine only shows the Contacts as white text against a plain black, non-video, background. Why are ours different? I looked through any possible settings, and couldn’t find anything that would make a difference.
Make sure in "General - Accessibility - Reduce Motion" is set to "OFF".
Reducing motion will make background go black. -
Is there a way to make a smart "playlist" of specific books in my iTunes library, and copy ONLY THOSE books to an iOS device? I own an iPad and an iPhone but I want different books on each different device. When I've tried this, the iOS devices don't seem to respond.
There is no playlist for iBooks, butther eis nothing to preent you from choosing to download specific titles from itunes, or syncing just specific titles to an individual device.

Is an iPhone 5 considered a different kind of device than an iPhone 6?
In an attempt to restore an iPhone 6 from an iPhone 5 back up in iTunes to attain the voice memos from the iPhone 5, the voice memos did not transfer to the iPhone 6 along with other things.

Any video taken AFTER ios6 was installed only displays a black screen with audio using same version of Quicktime. Sure hope they fix this FAST!! So much for Apple's quality testing!!

The family has been using one itunes account to purchase music and apps. This account was set up under my user name. I gave my wife my old ipad and got the 3-kids new ipads. I want to give all of the music and apps under my user name to my wife's new itunes account so the family can keep using them and I can have a separate account. Even if I have to re-pay for the music and apps.

Why are 2 different date formats being used in thunderbird?

in the attachment you will see that the listing of emails (on the left) is shown using UK date format DD/MM/YY (that's what I want), however, the message content panel shows the date in the US format MM/DD/YY (I definitely do not want this).
Why are 2 different formats being applied in Thunderbird, and how can I get both to be UK DD/MM/YY please.

Why is optimizer different in sql than in pl/sql?
Hello, I am running Oracle database 9i, it is running on an On-Demand hosted server, its purpose is to serve our Oracle Payroll application.
I have a certain query, and first tried it as a stand-alone query. It displayed the results almost immediatly.
Then I inserted the exact same query in a pl/sql block. It took more than one hour and canceled it. By looking at the session browser in TOAD, I saw that it was stuck on that query.
I also saw that the explain-plan for the query changed drastically from running as stand-alone sql to running inside pl/sql.
Why is this happening? How can I avoid this?
Please note that I do not intend to use optimizer hint since the indexes are built by oracle On-Demand and not me, so I don't know which indexes exist.

Why is optimizer different in sql than in pl/sql? It is not different, it is the same optimizer.
If you replace bind variables with literals then you have a totally different query, with much more information available to the optimizer. If you are seeing the same statement with the same literal values get a different plan within PL/SQL than in SQL*Plus or TOAD etc then there must be something else different. Unfortunately there is a lot less diagnostic info available in 9i (and I don't have 9i around to test on). Perhaps you can get a 10053 trace from each session and see if you can see what is different.
btw I still can't read the execution plan. There is more information in the DBMS_XPLAN output, and it needs to be formatted using ** tags or equivalent HTML. -
Why does a different number come up when i messaging to other i phones? My friends keep responding to my imessage with 'who is this' and apparently it comes from another number-not my usual number like texts...
