Usage Meter/ Power off charging

I have two questions.
1) When does the usage meter reset? Every night I charge my iPhone and it'll say something like 65 hours after awhile, with a message of "iphone has been plugged in since last full charge." Does this mean i haven't fully charged only partially charged it? I seriously leave it on the hook for like 10 hours or so. I'm a student about to start classes so i'm sleeping in a lot.
2) People keep posting to charge it while it's off to charge it faster for, lets say your leaving and it's almost dead. Can this be done? Everytime I plug my powered off iPhone into the dock connected to the wall charger it turns itself back on.

If your battery charges fully the usage meter will be at 0 and there will be no message stating the phone has been plugged in since the last charge. You need to fully charge the phone (make the lightning bolt symbol on the battery in the top right turn to a plug symbol) to reset the usage meters and reach a 'full charge'. You may want to try restoring your phone and adding the new update then charging the phone overnight with bluetooth and wifi off, but you don't 'need' to turn your phone off in order to completely charge it. My phone charges fully with bluetooth and wifi on.
Sometimes it seems like the counter starts in the middle of the night, I haven't had that happen recently so it might have just been some odd charging issue or it had downloaded some data that caused the charge to drop.
In short, plug it in and let it charge fully. If the counter doesn't reset after you have tried turning it off and charging it then do the restore/reset. If the counter still won't reset and you do not see the plug symbol call Apple.
The 'plugged in' message means that since you FULLY CHARGED the phone you have also put it in a dock. Sync it, leave it plugged in, or drop it in the cradle for a couple of seconds and you will get that message.
Good Luck,

  • Usage meter counts while charging

This is my second iphone. My first one would not reach full charge and the usage meter never showed any statistics after a week of use.
This phone has been great with a few things wrong, one continues to be the battery meter. When charging sometimes the battery on the screen will be full, sometimes it isn't no real pattern. But the plug icon always shows up and the usage meter does reset. However I have noticed one thing.
On the times that the battery icon is not full but there is a plug icon indicating full charge, when I unplug the iphone and check the usage it will read usage and stand-by times that are often several hours but both are equal. Like this morning I got up and it read 3 hours 23 minutes on both usag and stand-by time.
Now on the few times that the battery icon actually gets full when I pick it up the usage meter reads 0 for both so it is correctly set.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or seen their usage meter start counting while the iphone is charging. It is very strange and confuses me.

Nathan, I'm afraid I don't understand your answer and hope you can clarify it.
According to the iPhone user manual (pp. 95-96), the numbers in the usage statistics mean the following:
∙ Amount of time iPhone has been unlocked and in use since the last full charge
∙ Amount of time iPhone has been in standby mode—locked but turned on—since the last full charge
If the phone becomes fully charged during the night and then just sits there in sleep mode, then the first number (unlocked and in use) should be zero. During that time, even if you argue that it's being "used" by watching for calls, it's not unlocked. This is not happening, however, for myself or the original poster. Rather, both meters appear to be showing standby time since fully charged with the wall charger.
When I then connect it to my computer in the morning and it again gets fully charged, which only takes a few minutes, the usage stats stay at 0 minutes for both numbers until I disconnect the iPhone from the computer. Even if I leave it there for an hour or more, it stays at 0/0 until I disconnect it.
Simply put, my iPhone behaves differently with respect to these usage statistics depending on whether I charge it with the wall charger or with my computer. This is a benign and easily-worked-around bug, but it is a bug nonetheless.

Sounds like you need a #1SMC Reset
    1. SMC reset
    >>Instructions to reset SMC
Disconnect other non-Apple and external hardware except (if applicable) a mouse and keyboard until your finished repairing your machine.
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc.  If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.
    Other related hardware problems (optional):
Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

I tried to reset my iPhone (3gs) with deleting all data. When it power off and automatically again on then it is showing Apple logo only. Not restore and startup my phone. iPhone alerming low charge and I tried to charge and not charging.
    What I should do now?

Something has gone wrong. Turn your phone off, then force it into recovery mode:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. In your case, select "new".

Well the blinking light shows it's charging, however just to make sure.
Reset the SMC, then connect the machine to a power source that doesn't have a lot of other power items on the same lines (in the walls) in the same room and see how it is in the morning.
For instance use a powerline in another spare room that isn't being used as much.

Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot.

  • Battery charge wise - Turn Off vs Full Power Off

If I turn off my device with Full Power Off, will it charge faster than if I just use Turn Off?
    BlackBerry Z10
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No.  But even if it does, the difference will be negligible.  I would suggest using the Turn Off as opposed to Full Power Off because certain features, such as alarm, will still work with Turn Off but will not with Full Power Off.
    I hope that helps you.

    Carloyn,
Thanks for the tip. But when I hooked the iPad to the wall charger (which is a power supply too) using the same USB cable, I was able to turn it off. How come?

    Hi,
As long as the iPad is connected to your computer it has a power supply which prevents you from turning the iPad off. Better to allow the battery to charge to 100% while it's connected regardless.

  • My iphone is frozen. will not power off or respond even after charging.

My iPhone is Frozen. Does not power off as well. What can be done to fix this?

Try a soft reset, press and hold in the homescreen key (Circle button at bottom of the iPhone) and power key (One that locks the screen as well as turns it off and on) at the top, together and hold it till the screen shows the Apple logo, then release the keys, this should hopefully resolve.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Usage Meter Question

Ok, so I took the plunge on Tuesday and after a whole night of use I needed to recharge the battery on Wednesday morning. I was reading that the usage meter will turn on after the first complete charge cycle, so I was anxious to see this feature.
Charging went fine, and after it completed the phone did display usage and stand by time for a number of hours, until at some point late last night it suddenly went blank.
I haven't tried a new full charge since I haven't run the battery down that much at this point.
That being said I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue?? I searched the forums and saw some posts regarding the usage meter, but nothing like this.
The only thing that I did yesterday was turn the power off and back on, but I asked a friend to check this and the usage meter on the test phone kept clocking away.
    Thoughts???

    Hey djextort,
I actually posted a message like this but got no replies because no one had the same problem, but i guess there are a few people out there, I actually had the same problem when it randomly just started showing a few dashes, and after that I started having more problems. I got it to work by resetting it through iTunes and also by doing the whole reset through the phone, but days later the same problem occured, and i could never tell, eventually i started having battery problems and all that.
I actually just took it into the Apple store for the second time today, because the first time i took it in they did a instore reset, but what happened was that it showed i had 8 hours of usage time, with a full battery, right when i took it off the charger when i had fully charged it...
...the guys at the at Apple store ran some tests and found that it was a problem from the manufacturers, so they did the simple three day shipping of a new one, and I don't know if you're okay with that, but it worked out pretty well for me because they're sending me a whole new phone, thats my suggestion for you because it sounds like we had the same problem, and mine just progressively got worse.

  • Mobile data usage meter is HUGELY overcharging me...why?

It's 4-5 days since I got my sim card for the $49 Freedom Connect BYO plan.  That's a plan with 1.5 gigs included data and 25c per megabyte for excess data.  My data usage meter says I've used 0 kb of my included data and over $400 worth of pay as you go data (200mb charged at $2 a megabyte).  I spoke to the chat support a few days ago and they confirmed this is 'wrong' and said they 'take the charges away'.  Well, since then, my data has continued to be charged at $2 per megabyte.  Holy cow, does Telstra want my house?  Can anyone clarify, reassure or otherwise me about this?

How many people get ripped off and dont know and how many people get ripped off and dont have the guts to fight/know how to get the moeny back (huge amounts).Thats subjective really..... There aren't as many posts on this issue as, for example, the SG2 threads. As for not knowing, I would assume that customers would think about contacting Telstra via Phone, Email, LiveChat or via  a Telstra Store (Last Resort). Customers should feel free to able to contact suppliers and ask questions about their account. jonandemi wrote:
I know of 3 people personally who have payed over $800 each and left telstra for good because they just didnt want the stress of dealing with it or didnt know how to deal with it. Pretty good for about $400 of charges. jonandemi wrote:
Its wrong, a usage meter should be up to date to the hour at least. If you knew how usage was metered and counted, you understand why it takes 24 hours usually. B.

  • Proof usage meter is faulty

For many years I have had no problem with the reported amount of download/upload data reported by the usage meter.  It has seemed quite accurate and in line with my own system logs.
I have a cable modem directly connected to a Linux system.  There is no router in between.  The cable modem is running in bridged mode, which disables the wireless capabilities of the modem.
On 28-Jul-12, I disabled the network interface on that computer, as I'm making system changes and didn't really require network access on that particular computer during that time.  By disabled, I mean I shut down the network interface on the Linux system.  The DHCP client is not running and I have no IP address lease. Usage meter screenshot:
    http://s8.postimage.org/6e6elfzat/bpusage1.jpg
As expected, usage on the next day shows 0MB down, 0MB up.  However the  day after  (30-Jul-12) shows 168GB downloaded.  For 3 straight days, it has reported exactly 2516MB uploaded.  On 02-Aug-12, it reported exactly twice the previous days usage, 5031MB.  On each of those days 0MB was reported as download.  A typical TCP/IP connection would have at least some data sent in both directions.  This is hardly what I would describe as a normal usage pattern,
I called Bigpond on 03-Aug-12, but failed to convince anyone that there is a problem in their metering system.  They are trying to suggest someone may be using my wireless connection (I don't have wireless), or that a computer is running Napster/Kazza (I don't have a Windows computer), or a virus has infected my system. Early on 05-Aug-12, I physically switched off the cable modem.   Since that time, the usage meter has recorded another 168GB downloaded.   It is impossible to download anywhere near that amount considering that
     - a) I have been capped for the last 5 days - b) I have no IP address for the last 8 days - c) The cable modem is switched off This is proof that Bigpond's usage meter is faulty, but Bigpond continually refuses to address my concerns at all.  I get the standard scripted response and they refuse to have a systems/network person look at how this usage report is generated.  I don't want a new modem, or someone to check my line dammit, this is a problem with Bigpond's metering system, not a problem at my end. Bigpond refuses to tell me what IP addresses I have had this usage countered towards.  If they did check, they would find I have had no IP address.  Without an IP address, I couldn't have generated any traffic, or even had unsolicited traffic sent  to me (DDoS etc). Notice in the image that exactly the same amount of data has been recorded as being downloaded on 30-Jul-12 and 05-Aug-12.  What a coincidence.  Also, 03-Aug-12 usage meter previously showed data as loaded (2516MB) but mysteriously disappeared after a call to Bigpond.

It should be noted that 6.5 of the General Terms for Consumer Customers - Part of Telstra's "Our Customer Terms" says: We are required by various industry codes to ensure that our bills are accurate and verifiable and we are committed to complying with these requirements. Our records are sufficient proof that a charge is payable unless they are shown to be incorrect.
It should also be noted that Part 4.6 of Part A – General Terms for BigPond services, part of the Bigpond Service Section of Our Customer Terms says:  We may not be able to provide detailed information about your usage (or any of your group members' usage) of the service (for example, information about what sites were visited and when).
Unless you can conclusivley prove that there is no fault, Telstra is not obliged to investigate a fault. B.
