Usage monitors different

Over the last three days my BT Broadband account shows that I have used 8.5GB.  My home hub manager shows only 1.0GB (and that it has been connected for 13 days).
Can anyone explain the difference between to two figures?  1.0GB feels about right.
BT Help Desk just take the attitude that we are right and you are wrong.  When pressed to explain why the figures are different they just transfer me to a number that never gets answered.

BT Home Hub 4 (Type A) | Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.130.1.17
I am not using YouView at all.
The BT HH 4 A resets the upload and download data figures when they reach 4.3 GB. without re-connecting.
What has happened is that if the usage monitor says you have used 8.5 GB in the last three days the Hub has probably reset at least twice in the last 13 days and therefore should be reading at least 9.6 GB.
The Usage Monitor is probably correct in your case and you need to investigate why you are using more data than you think.
It is essential that you read your Hub stats at least once a day and preferably take screen prints.

I have also experienced the excessive BT broadband usage. I opted for option 1 because I have no interest in downloading Video's/music, apart from reading both BBC and Sky news the only other use is my wife using the online facebook game.
I received an email from BT last month saying i had reached 7GB of my 10 GB usage and just cant figure out why
I have downloaded a usage monitor which greatly differs from BT's own monitor,
What I would like to ask is,  does the monitor I downloaded only monitor what is open on my desktop, 2 whould there be a differnce between High Speed Broadband and those who's broadband is connected via telephone line.
if this is the case as i suspect, then someone downloading a file on high speed whould use less bandwidth than someone downloading on slow speed. look at it as sending a fax, it may cost 10p to send a fax on a cheap machine but to send the same sheet on a quality machine may cost 6p, I dont no?

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
You say you received an email last month for reaching 7GB - that was for April.
May I ask what usage monitor you are using, and how does it compare with your current May usage online meter from BT ?
The downloaded monitor will only record what that particular computer is using (won't include other computers, games consoles, mobiles and TVs etc). And then there are various settings in different programs to cater for usage within a home network etc.
What Facebook game is being used may I ask? Some of these applications can use many 100s of MB per day, so this alone could account for a lot of the usage.
There should be no difference between any "high speed" user and standard ADSL in terms of usage. In your example of downloading a file. The high speed (e.g. fibre) user will use exactly the same data content as a person on a slower connection. The speed is irrelevant with regard to how much is being used.
You can't compare with a fax machine, because typically these used normal phone lines which are charged on a timed usage - so the longer the call, the dearer the cost.  In your example it could actually be dearer to use a quality fax machine, because it may take longer to send a higher quality copy.

  • BT Broadband Usage monitor LIES

    Hi,
I have recently joined Bt from the 18th when my phone service and broadband was activated. The bt home hub came a few days later on the 21st. Before connecting the hub to the computer the day before I was on my BT and I wanted to check out the usage monitor and from the 10GB I receive it said that my current total till the 31st was 9.70GB left, this is impossible because I haven't used the Internet and haven't plugged in the hub, i kept calling bt about the problem but there was no definite answer from them. Now its been 8 days that I have used the Internet since the 21st. I keep checking my usage after the first 3 days it said i used 3gb and now I received an email saying that I have exceed 7gb and I have checked the usage monitor and it says that I have 2.2Gb left. TO be honest with you i was with sky the free broadband package which was 2Gb and I haven't went over the limit once so I cant see how I have spent 7gb in 8 days.I can see on the forum that other members are having the same problem as me, this is unfair and i hope there is a solution to all of this.

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
Clearly there is something wrong with the usage meter for new connections, and I believe that your information proves it. 300MB, although not large, is still 3% of your package and can't be some form of overhead "before" using it!
I hope you don't mind me asking what you may have been doing, e.g. Skype video chat, Facebook applications etc. If you have not done anything different to when you had Sky then there is a fault (though not sure if their package had any off peak allowance, or didn't include certain items).

  • The BB usage monitor

Is it just my browser or is it a general thing. When I log in to check the usage monitor it is a full day behind, which rather defeats the object. For instance, this morning at 07:00am,I checked and it only gave me the usage till the end of the 20th March  leaving out yesterday.I will be eventually upgrading to the next level of Broadband usage ie the 40Gig tariff, but in the meantime does anybody know of an onscreen monitor (from BT or anybody) that can be minimised to run in the toolbar? Cheers Kenny

The BT monitor shows usage up to the previous day, but it doesn't update until the morning. Don't know if there's a specific time for the update but mine showed up to yesterday just after 9am.
Third party monitors are available and this one is often recommended: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter.html. Their drawback is that they only apply to the computer they're installed on, which is of limited use if several devices use your connection. Whether any can be minimised to show real time use will need some more research.

  • BB usage monitor for 1 month ?

OK, just found the account linked usage monitor, and can see what has been recorded month to date.
Allowing for the fact it's a new tool, it would be nice to see previous months' data too, to assess trending vs. best service selection.
I can't see a way of selecting a date range, say from when the tool started until today though - is this available elsewhere? I presume the data is captured somehow by BT for quarterly billing support.

    Hi.
A number of "us" have already pointed this out. You can keep your own figures of course, say in a spreadsheet. The only problem is the silly fault with the system (not yet acknowledged) in that the figures for last day of the month (and hence the overall previous month's figures) are not available.
The meter shows the usage up to midnight the previous day - but does not d this when the day is 1st of the month. At the beginning of November, the meter was reset and the figures for 31st October (and hence the whole month) were not available.
The meter was supposed to go live at the beggining of October, but was delayed until 4th. It's possible that the flaw as seen above may have caused a problem and delayed the implementation.

  • BB usage monitor - random number generator yet aga...

A few months ago the BB usage monitor told me I had usage levels that were simply not possible.  When I dug deeper, everyone I work with who has BT also got the dire warning they were over their limit that month - even those with 40GB limits that were usually nowhere near and also had not changed their habits.
I got BT to admit they could not explain the bizzarre spike in my use.
But guess what's happened this month?  Double nomal usage again - which again can't be possible.  I don't play games, uplaod photos......just a few emails.
Anyone else found this?  And if so,  what can we do?  I refuse to be charged wrongly.

Thanks - But we should not have to do this!!
Last time the usage monitor went mad I found everyone I knew with BT had the same problem. So it must be them, not us.  When is this going to be fixed.  Searching through the forum this seems to happen a lot.  Feels just like a money making scheme for BT to me.
If you analyse most of the posts on this topic you will find that it is actually quite a small number that claim to have this issue and most if not all have not checked their usage against the home hub data. A good number are also unaware of the data transfer involved in common activities like Skype video calls, Iplayer etc.   If the Usage Monitor is incorrect then the hub data can easily prove it.
You will do the community a great service if you can show you have a genuine problem.  I have been trying for two years and found that the Usage Monitor has been correct when compared with the Hub data using 4 types of hub( 2a, 2b,3a,3b) .
There does appear to be issues with some new accounts and some BT Vision users but apart from 2 cases in the forum no convincing evidence of a real problem.
I agree absolutely. I have asked people in this forum to do just this to check the hub stats with the online meter. There are indeed very few cases where some have done this.
In the case I've mentioned a few times, my friend did do this and proved that there was something wrong.

  • The usage monitor is currently not available

    BT.com message...
"The usage monitor is currently not available for a small number of customers. We understand how important it is to monitor usage, and as you're not able to view the usage monitor we will not charge you for going over your usage limit this month. You don't need to do anything, we'll take care of that."
Well, finally BT's complete lack of ability to manage their core business is paying off.....can download/will download.....FANTASTIC!!!
And if you aren't affected by this and Do go over your limit...I'd complain to ofcom....you can't treat one customer one way and another a more preferential way....
Oh, and if you pay for anything more than 10MB download per month, I'd also ask for a discount......
Thank you BT...may your utter incompetence reign supreme forever....

  • WHERE IS OUR USAGE MONITOR BT

    Hi,
Now this is a COMPLETE RANT!
I am FED UP with my teeth seeing people talk about being threatened by increase of bills or changing contracts to the next product up because their usage is more than the product they have paid into.
For example, BT Bullies Granny , BT Charging for excessive use and wait for it, Went Over Option 1 FUP.....How To Upgrade? All of this when, NO USAGE MONITOR exists on the BT Website.
This really frustrates me because people are being pushed by upgrading to the next option where there could actually be better deals, lets face it, if a product does not work with the client, why continue with that product - move on!  Im sure you would revert back to Heinz Beans compared to Tesco Value Beans a!
Another item that really frustrates me is how BT looks after it's customers, the lack of any compassion and bullying to make sure those who are struggling to pay bills on time get either cut off or phone numbers changed.  Also, increasing direct debit payments which do not match the persons circumstances of calls and line rental, ok maybe one month you spent £2 more than normal, does not constitue an increase your DD from £30 to £75 pcm hay!
BT, you seem to be spitting in our faces, YOU are serving us as customers in a very bad way, WE are trying to advise YOU how YOU can help us, PLEASE LISTEN TO US, give us a USAGE MONITOR, GET RID of the term UNLIMITED, it is not an industry term which includes FUP, TELL US what we are paying for, something easy to understand with NO SMALL PRINT.
LISTEN so we can all be heard!

We all don't have the brain of our youths and this can be distressing. . . as can remarks from youths or the ill-mannered.
well i have a friend who is 73 who spends alot time downloading flightsim planes, and playing on his xbox and internet and mail and ive yet to hear him complain hes gone over his limit.
your age comments have no meaning, since for one its not even the woman used in the example who has posted, shes not technicaly a granny either since it was his mother and bt did not bully her. and where does it sterotype anyone. and what has limited resources have to do with anything, nice try on a posh sounding post though. what we really need to do now is find a 90 year old who downloads 100g xbox demos and music a month who keeps being told hes over his limit and ask him how he feels.
have a look at www.downloads.com they do free stuff for pc and mac and its cnet so its safe.
It is not the case of stereotyping or ageism that is the problem, the problem is BT a large worldwide organisation can not provide a utility to advise its customers there usage of broadband by day month or period, others can provide this, my mobile operator provides this so why not BT!

  • Re: Usage monitor not updating.

All I get is a message saying it's down for maintenance. All this is very interesting, as my allocation should have been topped up on the 1st. It wasn't topped up until the 2nd, after which it showed 3 days worth of usage, at my typical rate, accompanied by a message telling me that based on current usage I would exceed my limit and should upgrade to unlimited. This would be OK if they had ANY evidence, but I've only had it for 1 month, and my usage was well under. After this, the monitor stopped working and has been "down for maintenance" since yesterday, therby preventing me from seeing my actual usage. Ist it Me, or is there some kind of game going on? If I think I'm being gamed, then ALL BT services will be out of this house PDQ and OFCOM informed.

I average 4.6 gb a month, and am on the 10 gb / month tariff.  Nothing has changed in the setup here, but on 2nd July I  get an email to say I'm near my July monthly limit, and on the 3rd I get an email to say I'm over the limit.  As at the 4th the usage monitor says I have now used 20 gb - i.e 4 month's worth in 4 days.
I even turn the router off overnight and when I'm at work.
This is racking up a large bill.  After spending an hour on the phone BT insist their figures are correct.  Someone in India tried to change my wireless key 3 times, then gave up and said he can't do it, and he is off home as his shift has ended.  He suggests I try sorting it out myself, and to phone him back on Sunday.
Talk about banging your head against a wall.  I'll cancel the direct debit and they can take a run and jump when they send a big invoice through.

  • BT Infinity Usage Monitor not updating.....hmmm???

This happens at the end of every month.  I'm starting to think it is an actual ploy from BT to stop users from knowing how much broadband usage they have left?  The usage monitor normally starts acting up around the 25th of every month....then you get an odd day where it works then it then it stops updating completely.  This leaves a BT user in a vunerable position.
A, Scared of using Internet - Not wanting a penalty charge by going over your limit!
B, Not allowing the BT user to use their full amount of data that they are paying for = saving BT money = ripping us off!!!
SORT IT OUT BT.......IT'S JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

A lot more in this thread regarding the usage monitor,

Is there any studies about percentage of usage of different Oracle Server versions available on the net?

In summary, is it possible to have different versions of NW Java running on the same machine? If so, what is the best practice and process for installing the new NW instance?
Yes, it is possible. You need to make sure that the hardware has sufficient resources (CPU, RAM, Disk space, etc) to accommodate a new instance, the system numbers and SID's are unique and the OS and DB are supported for the new system.
