Usage of MXF OP1a DVCPro/AVC Intra

Hi,
This is a special one.
We use Omneon MediaGrid as a central server and would like to have access to the media natively.
Codecs we use are: DVCPro25, DVCPro50, AVCIntra50, AVCIntra100 all in MXF OP1a wrapper.
The machines are HP Z800 workstations. My questions are:
Will there be support for the above mentioned codecs in reasonable amount of time?
Is there a "simple" way to get above mentioned codecs in and out of CS4 Windows?
I'm aware that on Mac this is possible using MXF4Mac components. Well, it's on Mac.
Thanks for any input,
John

Well, as of CS4.2, all of those codecs are supported, provided that they are in Panasonic P2 MXF format. However, the particular formats you want to work with are packaged differently (even though, technically, the video decoding component is there in CS4), and PPro has no way to crack those files open to get at the goodies inside. You'll need a third-party splitter for the MXF containers and then a decoder for the contents--you're obviously aware of this as you cited the MXF4Mac components.
I'm not sure if it will work for your files or not, but give the Calibrated Software MXF Import plug-in (for Windows) a shot; DVCPRO flavors are listed, but I see no mention of AVCIntra. There is a demo available, which will let you test the functionality of the plug-in, and to see if it will at least serve part of your needs.
Unfortunately, I don't think you'll ever see out-of-the-box support for these particular containers; Premiere Pro (and most NLEs, for that matter) are designed for and work best with media files generated by a camcorder or some sort of lensed acquisition unit. Playout systems like these are anybody's guess as to if or when they'll be supported. My bet says "never", but I reserve the right to be completely wrong.
Post back if you meet with any success...

  • Since last Premiere Pro CC Update no more MXF AVC-Intra Class 100 Playback. Any suggestions?

I updated Premiere Pro CC two hours ago and since then there is no more realtime playback of my MXF AVC-Intra Class100 1080p footage, which worked perfectly bevore. When paused it shows the current frame of the footage after about 10 seconds. Does anyone else have this problem or are there suggestions what I can do?
    Thank you! David

    Hi Vinay,
the reset of the preferences did the job! Thank you very much for your help! For everyone else having the same problem, press "ALT" while starting premiere to reset the preferences.

  • Try to ingest Panasonic HPX 250 AVC INTRA 100 wich ends AME crash

    Hi!
I just bough new camera Panasonic HPX250 and now I try to ingest the footage with Prelude.
Every time after Media Encoder loads the source and tryed to start encoding it ends to crash (look image)
I have tryed also to uninstall  whole CC package and Cleaned with CC Cleaner tool and actually done it twice. Original footage is on 1080i50 and I just try to transcode it to single MXF clip with same parameters cos in P2 card the one over 60 minutes clip is cutted in multiple clips. My goal is get that in one peace to Premiere.
    Please help me!
    Greetings
    Sami

    Hi -
QE reports this might be related to a known issue with smart rendering for your selected transcoding preset. Please try turning smart rendering OFF in AME. To do this, open AME and find the preset you are using: It should be under MXF OP1a->AVC-Intra. Right click on the preset you use and select "Preset Settings...". Within the Preset Settings dialog that will appear, select the VIDEO tab and scroll down until you see the check box "Enable Smart Rendering codec". Uncheck that.
Since you changed the default state of the preset, you can now save this as a CUSTOM preset. Give it a name at the top of the Preset Settings dialog (in the "Preset Name:" field).  Then click the SAVE A COPY button at the bottom of the dialog.  This preset you just created will now appear in Prelude.
Let us know how this works for you. We are looking into the bug and hope to have it resolved in our upcoming release.

  • AVC Intra vs XD Cam playback

I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting such varried results with AVC Intra 100/50 and XDCam clips.  I'm in an arena production environment with a variety of sources and while I think AVC-I 100 should be my codec of choice, I just don't seem to get the performance I'm expecting.
For example, I shoot 720p AVC-I 100 & 50 as well as DVCPro HD on P2.  I'm import everything through the media browser and all my clips come in with the yellow playback indicator and stutter unless rendered.  I create my sequences by dragging the first clip onto "New Item" icon in the bin so as to make sure the setting match.
I also bring in 720p XDCam 50 MXF files from an EVS XT Access transcoder and a Grass Valley K2 with Dyno Elite.  Those clips come in with no render indicators and play back completely smoothly.
Is this typical of P2 workflows?
I have pretty high end hardware.
An HP Z820 with two Xeon E5-2670 procs.  48 gigs of RAM, Quadro 4000 and AJA Kona 3.  I'm editing from a 32TB Editshare with gigabit network.
Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide.

Raid3 is better suited for video editing work, because it is more efficient when using large files, as clips usually are. Raid5 is better suited in high I/O environments, where lots of small files need to be accessed all the time, like news sites, webshops and the like. Raid3 will usually have a better rebuild time than raid5.
But, and there is always a but, raid3 requires an Areca controller. LSI and other controller brands do not support raid3. And Areca is not exactly cheap...
Keep in mind that a single disk shows declining performance when the fill rate increases. See the example below:
A Raid3 or Raid30 will not show that behavior. The performance remains nearly constant even if fill rates go up:
Note that both charts were created with Samsung Spinpoint F1 disks, an older and slower generation of disks and with an older generation Areca ARC-1680iX-12.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and avc-intra

I am using Final Cut Studio 2 and am having trouble with .mxf files. I downloaded the avc-intra decoder drive from Panasonics site and a majority of the files ended 3/4 of the way through with sever audio noise at the end. I sent the drive back to the cameraman to see if he had better luck, turns out he did... Though I saw that he was using Final Cut Studio 3 and the quicktime files he provided back were formatted as AVC-Intra 100M...which is neither playable in quicktime or editable in Final Cut Studio 2.
What am I missing? Time to upgrade? What can I do in the meantime.
    Thanks for the ideas!

Well, you can't use the file he sent unless you upgrade. But if you get the card dumps back, you should be able to LOG AND TRANSFER to ProRes on your system fine. Or was that the issue? They had garbage at the end?
Trashing preferences fixes a lot of FCP oddities.

  • MXF OP1a Master file converted to Blu Ray in AME to .m4v showa up in Encore as Untranscoded

Just started creating Blu Ray DVDs from MXF OP1a AVC-I 100 Master files.
I use AME to convert to BR matching the settings of the master. It converts successfully creating  video .m4v and PCM files.
When I import them into Encore 6.02, the Project window info displays the video file as  " Remix. m4v    Video file      Untranscoded".  And     " Remix.wav   WAV audio   "Untranscoded"
Whats up with that? If they have been trancoded by AME why does Encore say they are Untranscoded?

The project panel shows both the DVD and the Bluray transcode status/settings. Make sure you are looking at the Bluray column.
What is the audio format for your disk settings? If set to dolby, Encore will show your pcm as untranscoded. Also, try changing the setting for the pcm asset to "do not transcode."
    Are you using 5.1?
I use AME to convert to BR matching the settings of the master.
Are the settings of the master BD compliant?

I too am VERY interested in this support.  We shoot quite a bit in AVC-Intra 100 and I was counting the days until the 4.1 update because from what I understood from NAB that codec would be supported in the update.
Adobe gurus...any update or timeframe?? As this is an important part of our workflow I would appreciate any feedback possible.

  • AVC Intra support and suggestions

We are in the market for a new camera, and we want to stay panasonic to match our existing library, mostly footage shot on an HDX900. We are debating on the HPX2000 or another HDX900. We understand they are very comparable in quality with an slight(?) edge going to 2000 with the AVC Intra codec.
The question comes down to FCP. I know it supports AVC-I to an extent in that must be transcoded to ProRes. I read that the transcode takes about 2 x realtime. We have a Mac Pro 2.66 dual core with 6 GB Ram writing out to a SATA RAID tower, does that still seem accurate?
I don't know if FCP has any plans to run AVC-I natively anytime soon. So would anyone with any AVC-I experience please let me know if it the transcode is worth my time?
    Thanks.

So would anyone with any AVC-I experience please let me know if it the transcode is worth my time?
Yeah...definately worth your time. The 2000 and AVCintra...vs the 2000 and DVCPRO HD is night and day. 10 bit codec vs 8-bit DVCPRO HD...your colorist will LOVE you. And you will see the difference.
And this is what assistants are for...paid less to do all of the grunt work.

  • FinalCut Pro and AVC-Intra

When is Apple going to release the AVC-Intra codec for FinalCutPro
    NAB 2007
    Panasonic AVC-Intra
AVC comes from MPEG-4 Part 10 H.264, now often referred to as just
AVC (Advanced Video Coding). AVC is about twice as efficient as MPEG-2, meaning that comparable HD video quality can be achieved at half the bitrate (AVC-Intra at 50Mbps = MPEG-2 Intra at 100Mbps). Panasonic states that AVC-Intra-50 achieves approx. the same compressed HD quality as their DVCPRO-HD (100Mbps). Their AVC-Intra-100 (100Mbps) achieves approx. the same compressed HD quality as Panasonic's famous master quality D5HD video tape recorder format. Thus, Panasonic in 2007 will offer two (2) truly professional intra-frame HD compression modes in their new HD camcorders: High quality ENG and broad market EFP with AVC-Intra-50 and network origination quality EFP with AVC-Intra-100.

Its against the forum's terms of use to speculate about future Apple developments. If anyone knew, they couldn't say. But don't worry ... you can always find out as soon as it's released or included in an update by checking here often (especially around NAB time).

  • FCP 7 is supposed to work with AVC Intra 50 and 100.... BUT

Ok this one is very strange. You can log AVC Intra 100 (from a Panasonic P2 HD cam) in its native AVC Intra 100 format.... but here comes the great puzzle....
There is no Setting in the Sequence Settings drop down menu to match that??????? Did Apple forget to put that specifik codec there or what?
So what you get is a Sequence that has to be ProRes but your footage is AVC Intra...
OK you lost me on this one....

Yes Codec wise the MXF files are an I-frame H264 MPEG 4 compression - but that is not what I uppose against.
Its Apple banging the big drum saying, that now FCP 7 works naitivly with AVC Intra both 50 and 100.
AND.... thats NOT true. Anyhow... its not logical that you dont have a Apple AVCIntra codec choise in your sequence settings.
YES I know to set the Sequence settings for ProRes... But that I have done for 2 years now and had to wait for FCP to transcode the AVCIntra MXF files to ProRES....
Now I have to wait for my sequence to render all the time, and I dont think thats a great trade off - more like a pain in the but

  • Dropping Frames during Playback with AVC Intra 50

I work in TV News and we recently switched from DVCPROHD 720P 60 to AVC-Intra 50 720p 60.  The DVCPRO HD worked great with Premiere. When video was placed on the timeline the clips had a green line over them and everything played glitch-free, with no dropped frames.  The AVC-Intra 50 is a different story.  On the timeline it comes in with a yellow line over the video, and the drops frames when played in the timeline. Rendering the sequence changes the yellow line to green, but it still drops frames. We feed out via the thunderbolt connection to an AJA i xt breakout box, and I'm getting video and audio glitches when feeding. This was never a problem with the DVCPROHD. The sequence settings are set correctly for AVC.  I tried changing resolution of program monitor to 1/2 and it had no effect.
    I'm editing on
Macbook Pro OS X Version 10.8.4
    Processor 2.7 GHz Intel i7
    8GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
Latest Version of Adobe Premiere CC

*Energy Saving Options never put HDD or computer to sleep
*No Camera or deck or anything plugged into drive. Graphic Tablet in USB.
*Most interesting thing is what Brian Conner said about the actual project file, I will try moving this as when I got the new drive I dragged this .fcp file onto there as well... Where should I put this on my Mac HD? I think the default is in Documents? this is the very small 'pointer file' right?

I'm trying to play AVCIntra 50 clips on my timelinme but they need to be rendered. Is this right? Do AVC-Intra clips that are in a project that is created to be AVC-Intra 50 need to be rendered ? Shouldn't they play without rendering?
Has anyone been able to do this?

  • AVC intra 100 in FCP

Tried to "log and transfer" a Panasonic HPX3000 P2/AVC-Intra 100/ 1080x1920 60i/24P file but Final Cut Studio 2(6.0) didn't read it What did I d wrong?? have the latest Macbook Pro intel computer, I have uploaded the Panasonic AVCintra Decoder in my mac succesfully.
    I have i my Audio / Video setting chosen : Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24P 48 Hz.
    What am I missing??
    Anybody know?
    I would appreciate it..
    Theo Van de Sande

Do you have have FCP 6.0.2? The latest upgrade?
How about FX Factory by Noise Industries? Do you have that? I ran into an import issue with P2 DVCPRO HD and a version of those plugins. They have been updated to fix that issue.

  • AVC Intra, how is it supported?

I am asuming that even though DVCPRO HD is supported by Premiere CS 3.1.1 that AVC Intra is not supported yet... right?
I hope Cineform have an answer, soon. Or Adobe.

Three ways (at least) to look at this.
    1. What is the final output (result required) ie. web, DVD, feature film, TV broadcast etc...
    2. Is it necessary to stay "native" from shoot to output? If so why and how?
    2. Is DVCProHD good enough to do the job?
I also have an opinion that it pays to capture/film/photograph with best possible camera/medium/codec etc... This will show a quality difference in the final output. eg. shoot 35mm film and post produce DV is better than shoot DV and post produce DV. I guess shooting AVC-Intra would be considered a reasonable quality capture in comparison to some others.
Suggestion was just a possible workflow for the OP and I have not tried it because I do not have any AVC-Intra to test.

  • AVC Intra Codec QT not playing

Hi, I just received footage in QT from a third party that I can't seem to play, neither on FCP or QT. The footage is in AVC Intra 100M Codec, I've downloaded the Panasonic P2 AVC Intra Codec, but still....no luck. Any ideas? Should I use compressor? I'm running FCP 6....
    Thanks.

You need at least FCP 7 to see the AVCIntra QT codec. Otherwise, you need the people to convert it to ProRes.
