Usage says mail app 2.4GB

I'm using an ipad2 with Os 7.1.1 I think.
OF course 32GB is not enough and am trying to free up space.
Under the settings tab - usage it lists all of your apps and how much room they require. The biggest one is mail, 2.4GB
I have deleted every email on all three accounts I have (bulk deleting email was a doozy btw) and the program still takes up 2.4GB
HOw do I gain back memory. There is no way mail is that memory intensive.
thanks in advance for your assistance

I have discovered somthing odd.
My network was setup using a single Dlink DI-524 router sharing a 10M down / 1M up connection to a Nintendo Wii, Linux server, and 3 Windows XP pcs and my single Macbook. I noticed through the logs that the Wii connected multiple times through the wifi connection getting updates and every time that it did this it would temporarily knock my Macbook off the network causing a delay accessing Gmail's IMAP servers. This causes Mail.app to go into a loop trying to access the IMAP servers and chew up tons and tons of RAM.
Solution. I setup a second Belkin router off one of my Dlink's ports and configured it to only allow my Macbook and AppleTV to access it. Problem solved. I have a rock solid internet connection with zero disruption to Gmail's IMAP servers. It appears with the 10.5.2 update, mail.app has developed a sensitivity to how it connects to the network. Hopefully 10.5.3 fixes it. We will have to see.
Hope this helps.

  • Mail.app hangs or crashes whenever making changes in it

As the subject says, Mail.app will hang for a very long time and/or crash (making a force quit necessary) whenever I make any change in it.
    OS 10.6.8
    Mac Pro desktop
I switched to Mail.app from Eudora in January and this behavior has pretty much always been there, but lately is getting worse. I have 3 POP accounts that I imported to Mail after first using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner. The import went fine, no problems encountered.
Counting sub-folders (mailboxes) in all 3 POP accounts, there are hundreds of folders and 10's of thousands of emails altogether.
Normal email functions for sending and receiving all work fine, but if I make *any* change within Mail, i.e. change a preference or try to add a new mailbox, or move a mailbox from one folder to another, Mail becomes unresponsive (spinning beach ball) for at least 5 or 10 minutes, at which point I now give up and do a force quit because the few times I've let it go longer it just keeps chugging away. The odd thing is (odd to me at least) that when the beach ball finally quits spinning, or I force quit and restart Mail, whatever change I was trying to make is done, and everything returns to normal until the next time I want to change something.
I'm getting ready to upgrade to Lion, and I know a new version of Mail will be part of that, so I'd like to get this resolved first so as to not just pass it along or possibly make something worse with Mail in Lion, unless perhaps just doing the upgrade to Lion will somehow "fix" whatever the issue is.
    Thanks for any information/advice.

Well, I found what was making Mail.app choke. A MacInTouch post proposed deleting the file named "LSMMap2" in the Library>Mail folder. I did that, and now everything is fine. LSMMap2 is related to junk-filtering, and in retrospect I see that all the messages that mail.app choked on were the sort of ones it normally thinks are junk.
(I turned off junk filtering as well. No one said that you had to turn it off to make this work, but my email provider has a good spam filter already, so I decided not to complicate things.)
Please note that, if you do this, your Mail.app junk filtering will be reset -- that is, it will forget whatever you taught it when you marked messages as spam or not spam. (The descriptions of what has been declared junk and not-junk are stored in LSMMap2 and LSMMap.) So you might want to just drag it to the desktop to start with, instead of deleting it straight-off, in case it is not the culprit after all.

  • HT5361 Can't open mail app!!!!

I can't open my mail app, when I click on it it shows as open, but the screen doesnt change. If I go to quit it, it will not let me. If I try to shutdown my computer, it will not let me because it says mail app is open!!! I couldnt get a genius appt. until Sept. 4!!! Somebody please help!!!

Try selecting Force Quit from the Apple menu and select Mail to see if you can Force Quit it.
I'm unclear about what you're seeing when you do open Mail, but if you're not seeing any windows opening, you may need to reinstall OS X.

If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact AppleCare(or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.

  • Mail app not working - says connecting... no new mail

Ok so I recently had a problem with my iPhone's "phone" app and "contacts" app (both would open a white blank screen and then crash after approx 10 sec.) so I did a back-up and restore from iTunes. After that the problem was fixed. However, NOW my iPhone's "mail" app is not working. When I open the app it says "connecting..." and has the spinning wheel but that it never connects. That wheel just keeps spinning away. When I use the "safari" app to access my gmail account it works perfect. I have 4 accounts (including my iCloud account) set up on my iPhone and I can't figure out what's wrong. I know I'm not the only one with this issue because I've seen the same problem UNANSWERED multiple times in this forum.
I'VE ALREADY TRIED A HARD REBOOT* - When my phone turns back on there is new mail but when I click on it to view it it doesn't load the message. just another spinning wheel. AHH!
This problem is really, really bothering me. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

    Hello rayalamx
If the Mail app is not opening, then I would remove the email accounts. Open mail to see if that resolves the issue and then start adding the accounts back in.

Got it! Thanx.  What I did was go to my account, check that they had my new ID and Password which they did, then hit reset button. All fixed.

Yesterday, when I brought my laptop back from sleep, I tried to check my e-mail with the Mail app like I always do. But there was the lightning bolt sign next to the inbox, and the pop-up asked me to input my password, which didn't work. It says mail.mac.com has rejected my password. The password is correct (I'm able to check my e-mail through my browser at me.com), but for some reason Mail keeps on rejecting it. I usually don't have to input my password at all in Mail. Any clue how to fix this? I haven't changed anything at all on my laptop.

I did change my apple ID password though...

  • Mail.app pops up saying "Cannot get mail" but the emails are downloaded normally....

mail.app pops up saying "Cannot get mail: The user name or password for "iCloud" is incorrect", that is not true because i can log in on iCloud.com with the same credentials setted in mail.app. But the strange thing is that i can get the email! Let me explain: mail.app download the emails normally but when it check for incoming mail and there are no one, the alert pops up.
This is not a critical issues, i can get the emails anyway, but that alert is really annoying.
I've alredy changed the password of my appleID to a new one, but nothing changed.
Has anyone had the same problem and managed to solve it?

I'm using a 16GB iPhone 4S, with the latest version of iOS 8.1.1. Whenever I go to the "Cellular" settings on the main settings page and turn OFF cellular data usage for native apps like mail, app store, contacts, photos etc , the moment I back out and come back in, all the native apps I turned cellular off for are back on again. Kindly help me

Exact same question as ankit1986, specifically with the photos while on cellular-only, and as simple as it sounds, I tried the hard reboot Ingo2711 suggested.  Still experiencing the same error with the native apps reverting to on.  It's killing our shared data-plan (2GB).

  • I deleted my Mail app sometime back. I reinstalled it again, today, on my Macbook Snow Leopard Mac OS but when I try launching Mail, it says ' You have Mail version 4.0(1075/1085). It can't be used on Mac OS X version 10.6.8(Build 10K549)",

The Mail version for your machine is 4.6 (1085)   You can get it via the Combo updater.  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

  • 800% CPU Usage used by Mail App?

    Hi,
since i've upgraded to Lion my Mail App goes hurry up to 800% CPU Usage and more. My 2011 MacBook Pro goes very loud and hot. So after a few tips i've reinstalled complety the Lion (with a self made Lion CD) and reconfigured Mail (without any backup import). But nothing happens. I cannot leave Mail open a few minutes because it starts normally but then goes up to 100%, 200%,... new record yesterday was 800% of CPU Usage.
I have about 10 Mail IMAP Accounts with round about 6000 Mails. A friend as more than this and doesn't have such problems on his new iMac.
I'm very frustrated and don't know what should i do... at this point i cannot use the mail app.
Hope you could help me please!
    Best,
    Henny

I fixed this issue, albeit, not in an elegant manner.  In my frustration with the new mail, I tried to copy the binaries and dylibs (otool -L) for the snow leopard version of mail to my lion install.  It eventually worked after finding all the correct dylibs.  However, it crashed frequently, and I had to revert back to lion's mail.  When lion's mail was re-opened, it re-imported all my mail and the issue disappeared.
I know this isn't a solution isn't pretty.  If you try this, be sure to make backups of everything.
    Good Luck.
