USB: 1.1 yes, 2.0 no!

My problem in short (mostly because I'm extremely tired and it's bedtime!):
My iPod shuffle works wonderfully in each of my USB2.0 ports, as well as in my two USB1.1 ports.
My new 5G Video iPod works in both USB1.1 ports. But when I plug it in to any of the USB2.0 ports, the entire computer freezes. I can't Ctrl-Alt-Del, I can't move the mouse; nothing.
Is this common? How do I fix it? I'd like to transfer quickly!
Thanks!

You missed his point. He isn't using USB 2.0. He has an early 2003 PowerBook (like my January 2003 PowerBook 12"). The PowerBooks that came out in early 2003 only had USB 1.1 which is much slower than either USB 2.0 or Firewire. That is why Ted and others like myself are a little upset that our relatively new machines (less than three years) can't sync at high speeds with this beautiful new device.
I am leaning toward getting a nano and to prepare I ordered a USB 2.0 PCI card for my five year old PowerMac G4 dual 450. It is a bit of a shame that I'll be able to sync faster with my five year old machine than I will with my PowerBook that I love so much.
The bottom line is that it was lame of Apple not to include USB 2.0 with the PowerBooks in early 2003 but at the time I really didn't think I would ever need it. I had Firewire after all, which is a better high speed interface.

I have follwed every suggested step (twice) to restore my ipad to no avail. It is stuck on the usb icon (yes it is charged), please help.

Did you try restoring using Recovery Mode? Sometimes you have to perform the steps a few times before it works.

If that continues to fail, how about DFU mode?

  • Stuck in Warranty Limbo - Need RMA for MFG limited warranty - Z10 Black Screen - USB not recognized (yes I've tried all the tips from other posts)

Here's to hoping a Blackberry employee reads this and can help me out.
I'm stuck in warranty limbo with my unlocked Z10. Bought new off Amazon.ca beginning of April-2014. While on Vacation the phone blue screened and died. It's outside of the online retailers 90 day exchange policy, in which case all I have left is the manufacturers limited warranty. Tried to contact Blackberry and they directed me to my carrier Telus, even though I did not purchase the phone through them. Telus was very helpful, we worked through troublshooting together, but unfortunately got to the same conclusion that the phone needs to go back for a hardware issue. They kindly offerred to RMA the phone for me through their system, however since I did not purchase the phone through them and it is an unlocked world phone it does not recognize the IMEI so they couldn't complete the process for me. There is absolutely no luck getting any help through any of the multiple Blackberry phone numbers I've called. Any help sorting this out would be much appreciated. I will drive the phone to the office in Waterloo if need be.

You're probably going to have to drive the phone to Waterloo.
Here's the situation: You bought the phone from Amazon which has a 90-day exchange warranty. That's mistake #1. Then you registered  the phone for service on Telus' network but the phone wasn't purchased from them so they won't honor any warranty claims (which is their right because they didn't make any money from your purchase of the phone from them). You're in a catch-22 situation. There's really nothing I can advise you to do except buy your next phone from the carrier with which you have monthly service.
Not much help but that's how I see it. Perhaps others can enlighten me with a different point of view. Cheers.

  • [Solved] Suspend not working on Asus N82JV / USB 3.0

*Solved* Turns out you just have to create a file in /etc/pm/config.d with the following text: SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci-hcd ehci-hcd". Voilá. Suspend to ram works by a) sudo pm-suspend b) Ordering KDE to suspend c) Fn+F1.
I've been trying to figure this out for some time now.
I've managed to get suspending to disk working, using hibernate-script with USuspendMethod disk. I had to blacklist xhci_hcd (usb 3.0) in order for it to work.
I already tried pretty much every s2ram combination as described here, even though I haven't yet tried the booting with minimal environment part.
Every combination ends up complety locking the system, with no possibility of ctrl+alt+fx or even ctrl+alt+del. Just hangs 'forever'.

Am I missing something? Is it another module? Some hardware that's causing this? The only other odd hardware configuration, other than USB 3.0 is the dual graphic cards (Nvidia Optimus). The Nvidia is powered down, though (tried both ways).
Note: The default suspend system doesn't work, it just locks the screen (if in gnome/kde/whatever)

Looke like tripplec has this right.  From http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&DocID=PD024298

Thinkpad T430, T430s and T530 models on the Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 will function as a USB 3.0 port.
The functionality of the T420, T420s and T520 is a limitation of the Intel Chipset not a defect in either the Thinkpad or Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0
I don't see that on the sales page.  Only found it by searching on the part number

  • USB Audio problem

    Good day, folks:
    Specifics:
    - PowerBook G4 Aluminum (2003)
    - About a month beyond extended Apple Care warrant
    - Mac OS X 10.4.7
    - 1.25 GB RAM
    - Logitech 250 USB headset
    - MacAlly IceCam
(Please forgive if this is repetitive; I did not see this specific problem referenced in earlier posts.)
I no longer can hear anything through my Logitech USB headset using either USB port on my PowerBook. About a month ago, I could no longer use the headset through the right USB port after trying to edit a file in Bias Peak 4 LE, but I didn't complain because I still had use of the left USB port.
Now, after using a Macally IceCam last night in the left USB port, I find I can no longer hear anything out of the headset when it is connected to the left USB port.
Yes, the headset does appear as connected in Skype's audio preferences. (That is what the headset is used for most.)
Yes, the headset does appear as connected in Apple's Audio Midi Set Up.
Yes, the headset does appear as connected in Apple's System Preferences.
Yes, other non-audio devices (i.e. Apple wired keyboard, Kensington, USB mouse, HP LaserJet 1012 printer) appear and operate normally in either USB port.
And I just ran the Disk Utility to both verify and repair permissions, then restarted.
    Still, no Logitech capability.
Any help with getting one USB working with this device -- I depend on Skype rather heavily -- would be great; getting both ports to work would be supreme.
Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.

    PowerBook G4 Aluminum Mac OS X (10.4.7)

OK, so in following up I found a partial answer here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2873545&#2873545
This answer, however, doesn't explain why the Logitech USB headphone would have worked fine right out of the box for a couple of months, yet now does NOT work.
And it doesn't explain whether or not the problem (assuming it is lack of power on the laptop USB ports) can be fixed via any setting.
    So my followups are:
    1. Assuming the problem is lack of power in the USB ports, why would the outage have occurred only after using the Macally IceCam?
    2. Should I discontinue using the Macally IceCam in the USB port? (I cannot seem to find a FW camera for the life of me, that's why I settled for that.)
    3. Since my laptop is Bluetooth enabled, will any decent Bluetooth earpiece work with Skype for Mac, and can anyone make a good recommendation?
    Again, thanks in advance

  • Can I use a usb wifi card on my MacBook Pro?

I'm having trouble connecting to my old router (d-link di-714p+). The matter has been discussed here in other threads and it seems that no one can connect a MBP to this old router.
I don't want to buy a new router, yet, and running a long cable throughout the house is sturting to bother me.
I also have a dwl-g122 wifi usb dongle and I thought this might be an solution: I'll stick the dongle into my MBP and have wifi...
BUT: Does anyone know if connecting 2 wifi cards to a mac can damage it in anyway? Can I temporary disable the AP card ? How?

If you have a driver for the USB stick then yes it will work, however do a search in the forums for the USB stick you have and you will see that some people have had problems.
It won't physically hurt your Mac to have two wireless adapters, though for simplicity sake you may want to remove Airport from the list of possible network connections in
System Preferences > Network > Configurations

  • Itunes Freezes during Sync on 3G & 3GS with Vista 64 & 7-64 all USB ports

To start. I originally had an iPhone 3G over a year ago on this desktop running Windows Vista 64Bit. My phone was able to sync with the PC for about a month and stopped being able to sync. I received many error numbers and put support tickets in with no avail. I then upgraded to an iPhone 3GS. Still under Windows Vista 64Bit and could not Sync my phone. It consistantly froze during the sync process. I tried all USB ports on my PC. People said to try restoring your iPhone and iTunes. I tried that and then got stuck on my restore. I had a broken phone until I was able to sync with my laptop.
I now have the same desktop Acer AM3641-EQ8200A but I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I have always had the latest iTunes version, and tried 32 bit and 64 bit versions of iTunes. I still cannot successfully sync my iPhone. If it sits there long enough it will freeze up, start to freeze my computer etc. I decided to try again last night after I got a new USB cord and had the same issue.
In addition, my girlfriends iPod will not sync to the desktop either.
I have been stuck doing syncs on my Netbook for over a year now. Optimization of 3,000+ photos is horrific on it, but it works.
People say to get an external USB that is self powered. Why should I have to do this and chance frying my PC?
The deal is this, the phones won't sync with the desktop but will sync with my netbook also running windows 7 ultimate. All USB drivers are up to date on both.
I have tried Reformatting and Installing Windows. Reinstalling itunes. Updating all drivers. Tried different versions of iTunes. I first called Apple Retail, they had no answer. I wrote apple a lengthy letter with all the Error codes, they said they would call me even though my warranty over the phone support was expired. Never got a call back after they heard my problem.
What can I do to rectify this? I am not the only one out there.

    UPDATE:
After putting a USB 2 card in my mac, all worked properly. The problem seems to be using USB 1.1.
    This is really tragic because:
    + many Macs don't have USB 2,
+ it is very difficult to find out out if USB 2 exists on your computer (why are no USB 1 or 2 details spelled out in system profiler ?),
+ there are no warnings as to the sort of issues that would be coming up with USB 1.1 (yes I know the specs clearly says USB 2, but it looks like it was working at first),
+ there are no spelled warning by the system (after all, the iTune, iPod combination could detect easily that the incorrect USB standard is being used and warn the user),
+ there does not seem to be specific advantages to use USB 2 (like speed) as the syncing peaked at 6MB/s, a speed achievable with USB 1.1
Come on Apple you can do better than this !

  • Cannot print to USB HP Color LaserJet 3600N on Vista SP2

I had this printer setup and working fine until I nuked my laptop and reinstalled Vista Ultimate with SP2.  When I connect the USB, the laptop connects as it makes the noise that it's connected.  The printer shows online.  I went through the wizard of adding and installing the proper driver that I downloaded from HP.
When I try and print a test page, all I get is "Error - Printing."  That's it.  No error in event viewer.  Yes the printer is on.  Yes it's the proper driver.  Yes it's connected properly.  Yes I have tried 3 other USB inputs.  Yes the printer worked fine last week so it's not the printer.
What the heck is going on?  I can print fine to 2 networked printers.

  • What Superdrive (external USB) is compatable with Mountain Lion 10.8.3?

What Superdrive (external USB) is compatable with Mountain Lion 10.8.3?
My New install of 10.8.3, will now.... not reconize anything I put in my drive... it spits it back out!
Superdrive does NOT reconize any activity.
It will show my information on/of my drive...but, that is about it...
Is there a patch/fix for this issue with 10.8.3?
If not...why is Apple (seemingly) ignoring this issue? There are so many with the same complaint.
They want $19 to answer this question...why? I just bought the upgrade to 10.8.3 a couple of days ago.
Anyone have any suggestion, beside switching BACK to Microsoft...?

Sorry about the serial number...wasn't thinking.  Mentally noted.
I would think it to not be too much, to ask for it to be able to read/write to the listed capablities list with the product (superdrive). The different media type...
I insert blank -R DVD, -R CD, ...anything I put in,it spits it out.  NOTE:  The ONLY thing I've been able to get it to read, is some old CD's that I had some mp3 files on...it would read that OK... but if I try a DVD read or write and write a CD...NOTHING!
This worked fine before upgrading to 10.8.3   was at 10.7.5....
Any help would be much appreciated.

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Trouble connecting to external USB hard disk through PC

I've had AirPort Extreme 802.11n for a few months which I use to connect to a printer and to share a USB hard disk between my eMac and my thinkpad. For a while everything was working beautifully. The disk showed up on my eMac desktop and in my Windows XP file explorer. Then recently the USB disk stopped connecting at all to either computer even after trying the old remedy of connecting directly to my Mac, dismounting it, and reconnecting. Then today a bunch of updates for the AirPort Utility became available and after updating to 5.3.1 on my eMac the disk shows up on my eMac again. But on my PC here's the situation: the disk appears in the AirPort Utility for Windows (5.3.1) but I can't find it in Windows file explorer. I tried the alternative ways of connecting shown here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306119
    but no dice.

Uhmmmmmm, you meant to say the Macbook Air DOES have (2)  USB PORTS
GENEDI, yes, you can connect a 2.5" USB external HD to your Mac AIR, ...... done it a 1000 times

  • 24" Cinema display USB functionality just disappeared!

OK, My girlfriends 24" Cinema display arrived today for her MBP.
I set it up earlier and tested it with my MB. Looked absoluetly fine. Plugged in the USB keyboard she ordered too and that worked fine.
She arrived back from work, I got out her MBP, plugged it in, everything seems fine so far.
Now we tried it in clamshell mode. Closed the lid on the MBP, waited a couple of seconds and hit a key on the USB keyboard.. MBP waked and the display wakes.. great!... but the keyboard doesn't work :o
From this point on NO ports seem to work off the back of the display. The Camera and Audio devices also seem to be unrecognised by the Mac now.
Disconnected everything from the Cinema Display, powered it off for about a minute. Still no joy when it comes back.
Restarted the MBP, also did a PRAM reset.. still no joy.
Connected my MB to the Cinema Display.. behaves the same.
Is there the slightest possibility that something needs resetting do you think or does this sound like the thing has gone trotters up already?
She is using latest patches on Leopard btw. but my MB is running the latest Snow Leopard patches and behaves the same.

    SuperDrive
Probably not. That drive requires more power than a regular USB 2.0 port supplies and isn't compatible with other Mac models.
    USB Ethernet Adaptor
    Yes.

Yes, you just need to use the appropriate ripping software, such as Handbrake.

  • Satellite Pro A200: Wake-up over keyboard using an USB keyboard

is there a way to turn on the laptop while keeping its lid closed using a USB keyboard. if yes what is the key combination

Hmmm I dont know if you can wake up the notebook if the lid is closed but as far as I know it should be possible to wake the notebook using a keyboard itself.
The Toshiba HWSetup was preinstalled on the Vista OS. In this tool you should find an option called: wake-up on keyboard.
This can be found in the keyboard tab and you need to set it to Enable.
Furthermore please enable the Legacy USB support. This option can be found also in the HWSetup under USB tab.
    Best regards

  • Harman Kardon USB Soundsticks (1st Gen) Screeching/Static

After upgrading to 10.6/10.6.1, I now get periodic, short screeches/static on my USB Harman Kardon Soundsticks (the USB-only version), regardless of the source of sound. So playing music is definitely now intolerable.
Anyone else experiencing USB sound related issues?
This is the last straw for me in using USB-based speakers as I've they always "disconnected" and were no longer accessible when performing large file transfers with USB drives. Only a restart would make them accessible again. With this new issue in Snow Leopard, I'm ditching them for mini-plug based speakers.

Don't give up +so fast+. I'm trying to find a way to lower the USB SoundSticks' volume for years now without luck. But other than that, they still work fine with 10.6.1 over here!
I know of the static noise problem, but I only had that years ago with 10.3 and/or 10.4 and it was caused by my USB hub. Connecting them directly to my Mac worked fine and since using the following setup I never had a problem:
MacBook Pro (had several models and PowerBooks before) - Cinema Display - Belkin USB hub - SoundSticks
Yes, there's 2 hubs involved and it works fine. I use the somewhat older 30" Cinema Display and this Belkin hub: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=158910
