USB 2.0 on my Emac (angry content)

I forked over $450 for a new Ipod 60Gig Video. $25 for a case..I just get it today..and I find out apple stopped having firewire with their ipods? ***! I talked to a technichian about this and he says quote on quote "Apple no longer offers firewire because of the majority of Ipod users are Windows users, and they don't use firewire. Apple did this to cut costs."
Thanks for taking care of your own apple users apple! I have been a faithful apple user since I was 9 years old!! But..Whatever. Is there anyway that i can buy something/download something to make it so my ipod will copy things alot faster then what it is doing now? I only have USB 1.1 on my EMAC. It litterally takes 15 hours to copy 2,500 songs. On firewire..that would take 25 minutes. Help is much appreciated. Thanks!

The root cause of the problem is that the iPod dropped Firewire support, not that the eMac doesn't have USB2. The original poster might as well cross posted the same thing to the iMac group, the powerbook group, the ibook group, ... all have computers without USB2 support. But to get back to your question, I am not aware of anyway to get USB2 support on an eMac that doesn't already have it. No one has made a, for example, Firewire to USB2 converter that I am aware. I think the original poster will just have to live with the USB1 speeds until they upgrade to a new computer.
The good news is that real pain is the first time you hook up the iPod and have to download a LOT of stuff to it. After that, when you are only doing incremental changes (a new CD added to the library for example), it won't seem nearly as bad, although still not speedy.

  • Digital Camcorder & router/Airport USB 2.0 to connect eMac with only USB 1

I've looked around and asked many sources, only to come to the same conclusion that I already thought I knew... no way to go from USB 2.0 through another interface to use firewire on an eMac with only USB 1.1.
I'm curious if anyone has connected a router with a USB 2.0 to an older mac, eMac and/or TiBook in my case via ethernet so that a digital camcorder might appear under the ip-based items available from the router?
there is no reason, other than it being painfully slow over USB 1.1 to think beyond the eMac as it otherwise does every task necessary for my in-laws perfectly. never had a single problem that wasn't caused by their inexperience with a computer, which also makes using a mac so much easier to troubleshoot and fix. they just bought a nice digital hdd (hard disk drive, not hd res) camcorder that communicates via USB 2.0 (as almost all do nowadays).
will any router, or more-specifically an Airport router, be able to communicate with the camcorder via its own USB 2.0 interface and then distribute that data over ethernet to the eMac, or would the router be hamstrung by the same USB 1.1 bottleneck that would affect it if done directly.
I'm also open to other alternatives... I haven't had a chance to play with the camcorder yet, but I imagine that it will somehow mount to the desktop were it able to comm via 2.0. any thoughts?
    cheers,

    hi duane,
thanks for the quick reply. excellent info.
i noticed that your email said more than the post, did you edit out the last statement, as that was what i was going to comment on...?
my digi camcorder, a tape-based model, does show up like a volume on the desktop, but i wasn't sure of the new hd-based one that my in-laws purchased would. i am able to see the other not just in imovie, so perhps it will mount in the usb port of a router. i don't have an AEBS, but would purchase one specifically for this use if it did work. however i will test it on my us robotics and belkin models that have usb as well. i might also try my NAS drive that has a usb port for daisy-chaining more usb items.
the good thing is that the bottleneck on the emac won't affect the process, it's just a matter of whether the hdd-camcorder can be mounted via one of the other options.
thanks for the other comments, i'll mark as answered once i see how it goes...
    anyone else have any thoughts?

  • My USB twain digital microscope is seen, but content is from tablet camera

I have a Celestron #44300 USB digital microscope that I've been using successfully with Photoshop elements 9 & 11 on Windows 7 for years.
I followed the instructions to set up the TWAIN driver previously on my Windows 7 PC.
I now have a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet running windows 8.1 that I'm trying to use the microscope with.
I followed the Adobe website instructions for installing the TWAIN driver on the tablet.
When I call up Photoshop Elements 11 and look for the input devices, it clearly shows the digital microscope there in the list.
But when I select it, I get the tablet's camera view instead! And even when I click to capture that picture, I get an error and Photoshop Elements crashes.
Is there something extra I need to specify?

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • Ctrl+Shift+Option+5 registers as Option+5 in custom emacs build or over ssh

I'm having trouble with custom emacs and emacs over ssh with Leopard. Included below is the text of the bug report I filed with Apple. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd love to hear about them.
It won't let me change the OS on this post for some reason, but I'm running Leopard, not Tiger.
In Terminal.app Version 2.0 (237) when I ssh into my Gentoo Linux server and run emacs, or if I run a custom-compiled version of emacs in terminal mode locally, pressing CtrlShift+Option5 (which should bring up "Query replace regexp:" in the bottom input bar) registers as if only Option+5 was pressed.
NOTE: I am using the new aluminum USB-2.0 apple keyboard connected to a MacBook Pro running Leopard 9A581. I have not tested any other hardware configurations.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Download http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/emacs-22.1.tar.gz
    2. Untar the above
    3. cd emacs/mac && ./make-package --self-contained
    4. Copy or move Emacs.app to /Applications
    5. From Terminal.app run "/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs -nw"
    6. Press CtrlShift+Option5
    OR
    1. SSH into a linux server and run emacs.
    2. Press CtrlShift+Option5
    Expected Results:
"Query replace regexp:" should appear in the input line at the bottom of the screen.
    Actual Results:
"ESC 5-" shows up. The escape key is an alternate meta-key, so this indicates that the program believes Meta+5 was pushed, where the actual meta-key that I'm using is Option.
I never noticed this problem in any version of Tiger, but it occurs in Leopard.

Perhaps, you should try to reset your preference file to see if it corrects itself.  I have posted the instructions at this link:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1097046?tstart=0
    Good luck.

  • How to stop importing from usb drive going into root ITMS directory

First time I imported, everything was fine. I was trying to get rid of some duplicates and got rid of one of the main subdirectories (I had "Itunes Music" folder with two main subdirectories, let's call them "Laptop" and "Desktop." I noticed I had many duplicate artists from these, so I deleted the "Laptop" directory. Naturally, all these showed up with asterisks on iTunes. With no easy way to delete them all (can't sort based on asterisk, apparently), I removed EVERYTHING from my Library and attempted to copy over from the USB drive again. This time, the contents of "Laptop" went into the root "iTunes Music" folder (so there were now ~50+ folders including the "Desktop."
This isn't working for me, since my objective is to get rid of the duplicate work (duplicate tracks I can somewhat stomach, but I also have some duplicate "Artists" which is driving me crazy). I removed everything from the library, deleting it all (~30+GB) and deleted all of the subdirectories from the iTunes Music folder.
When I went to reimport it all again. I dragged the "Laptop" folder from Finder on the USB drive into the iTunes Music directory again (as I did the first time), recreated the and everything continues to populate the top iTunes music folder. Is there any way to stop this? I want the "Laptop" folder to stay in it's subdirectory structure distinct and separate from the "Desktop" folder so I can ensure I am not unnecessarily increasing my structure.
One easy (though extremely tedious) alternative could be to import the folders one at a time... but I'd really like to avoid that. But for my first mistake, this wouldn't have been an issue. I haven't changed any settings on iTunes, so please advise!

I have duplicate (different) stuff on the laptop versus desktop but some unique to each (and all kinda scrambled up). I first started importing on my old G3 ibook. It was slower and chugged harder and some are at really low bitrate, for example, and also lack album art. My XP desktop was made for gaming and is much more powerful, so I always did high bitrate and was much more careful to do all the album art, etc.
Now I'm trying to consolidate it all on my new MBP... Mostly, though, it's a mess and I've been putting this off for years and it's mostly my fault. My biggest gripe is the large number of duplicate tracks. I can live with these when they're from different albums (compilations mostly), but not when one is a lower bit. I imagine I'm gonna be doing it the hard way, one album/artist at a time...

  • Performance Issues with 10.6.7 and External USB Drives

I've had a few performance issues come up with the latest 10.6.7 that seem to be related to external USB drives. I have a 2TB USB drive tha I have my iMovie content on this drive and after 10.6.7 update, iMovie is almost unusable. Finder even seems slow when browsing files on this drive as well. It seems like any access to the drive is delayed in all applications. Before the update, the performance was acceptable, but now it almost unusable. Most of the files on this drive are large dv files.
    Anyone else experience this?

If every person who had a performance issue posted to this thread, we'd never find a solution for the initial poster. Let's isolate each case one by one. It is NOT necessarily the same issue, even if the symptoms are the same. There are numerous contributing factors at work with computers, and if we don't isolate them, we'll never get to the root cause.

  • Ovi Suite + 5230 USB not working

    Preamble:
I recently connected my Nokia 5230 mobile phone to my PC via USB connection and loaded up Ovi Suite (2.2.1.23). Everything worked lovely. But alas! Both an Ovi suite update was available, as well as a update for the phone itself! So I downloaded the latest version of Ovi Suite (3.0.0.284).
Unfortunately, now Ovi Suite does not detect when I select "PC Suite" USB mode (selected on the phone screen). This essentially makes Ovi Suite useless.
So I followed some advice on other discussion pages (more on that later) and reinstalled the Ovi Suite. The problem persisted.
Here are some pictures to help you understand my problem:
    http://i.imgur.com/5IknF.jpg
The computer is able detect the phone is connected via USB. I can even browse the contents of the phone memory and memory card. Upon detecting the connected phone, and me pressing 'PC Suite' on the phone screen, it will show this:
    http://i.imgur.com/lV0rs.jpg
I cannot progress past this screen. The Ovi Suite simply does not recognise that I've selected that option on the phone.
    Defense:
I know what your thinking. "Just another USB thread". Well, I did in fact read plenty of threads on this forum before posting, and have spent the last few hours uninstalling and reinstalling Ovi Suite and drivers in various ways (as suggested in those threads), with no success.
The following is a list of forum threads which I have read and tried all the solutions found in each, and I have copied the solutions (which appear to have worked for other people), for your convenience:
    /t5/Nokia-Ovi-Suite/Ovi-Suite-PC-Suite-USB-Connection-Problem/td-p/682828
Solutions which did not work for me:
Could you please follow these steps and check?
    1. Disconnect your phone from PC if connected.
2 .Open Control Panel and go to ‘Programs and Features’
    3. From the list of available programs, choose ‘Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver’
    4. Click on the ‘Change’ button on top toolbar.
    5. In the setup dialog box that pops up next, choose ‘Repair’ and select ok. Wait for setup to complete.
    6. Restart the computer if prompted.
    7. Now connect your phone to the PC. Driver installation should complete and PC suite (hopefully) should detect your mobile properly now.
    1. Uninstall all nokia related applications like Ovisuite, pc suite, connectivity cable driver,pc connectivity solutions, nokia software updater etc. from ur PC.
    2. Restart your PC
    3. Now download and install the recent ovisuite from http://www.ovi.com/suite
    4. After installation, disconnect/disable your internet connection (this will make sure that the PC use the drivers which comes with ovisuite and  prevent the PC from downloading any new drivers from internet) and then connect your mobile and wait for drivers and support software installation.
    5. After drivers installation you can connect your mobile to ovisuite from ovisuite screen.

After OVi Suite installation, restart your PC, disconnect your internet from PC and connect your mobile to the PC. This is to prevent the PC searching for a new drivers from internet. OVi suite has all the required drivers for all the nokia phones available in market.
Once all the required drivers are installed automatically, you try connecting the mobile by selecting 'Connect your device' from the bottom left on the OVi suite screen. You should be able to connect your device now.
After connecting you can go ahead and update your maps/ download new country maps.
NOTE: before updating your maps/ download new country maps, you should have used your maps in you mobile atleast once.
Hope this will resolve your issue.
You can connect back your internet anytime after the drivers installation.

After re-starting the computer, I also followed this portion of a suggestion from another post (don't know if it made a difference or not):
"connected the device, waited till all the drivers were loaded.

     (From /t5/Nokia-Ovi-Suite/E52-Sync-Error-8393f010-838c03ee/m-p/740481)
Ovi Suite then recognized my device and the sync appears to have gone smoothly.  I hope it works for you too!  It's ridiculous that it causes so many problems though--I've wasted many hours on something that should have installed correctly the first time.

    Zship's revelations:
So this is not really a problem for me. I have the working, older (2.2.1.23) version of Ovi Suite installed on my netbook, and sure enough, it works fine, I just tried it. I wont be updating Ovi Suite on it though. I also could probably just download the update via 3.5G using just the phone itself, but the problem remains that a simple software update has caused a critical connectivity problem between your software and hardware. Given that many Nokia customers would have less technical know-how than say, myself or anyone else on this forum, this problem is a quite likely a huge inconvenience to them, they probably wouldn't visit these discussions and spend 5 hours reinstalling software like I just did, and they surely would be thinking twice before purchasing another Nokia device in the future.
tl;dr - Nokia recommended update breaks connectivity between software and device, various attempts to fix seemingly simple problem don't work.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

SAME PROBLEM. And none of the many suggested solutions has worked for me yet. I want to thank all on this thread (and many others) for their help. I've learned a lot but I haven't gotten to the bottom of it. I think maybe Nokia needs to ... uh ... bloody well BOTHER TO FIX THIS ISSUE themselves, maybe. Like, cuz they're PAID FOR IT and I'M NOT. Harrumph.
I run Windows XP, and was on Media Player 11, but have rolled back to 9 and 10. I have a Nokia E 72. I have all the latest Nokia cable-drivers, PC Suite, OVI Suite, Connectivity software, etc.. The symptoms are as follows: when I plug in the phone by USB cable, the laptop won't recognize it. It says "USB device faulty" or "failed to load properly" and refuses to get the hardware into its brain. The Device Manager shows only a "Unknown Device" which I cannot install drivers onto. Taking the extra media-card out of the phone doesn't make any difference -- nothing I've done will make the computer recognize the main (built-in) card in the phone. I can't browse to it via any sort of populate / repopulate disk drive, or any other method of connecting it.
As I understand it, this is some conflict with the phone and the new concept of MTP. Media Transfer Protocol confuses the computer, causing it to kind-of think that the phone is kind-of a media player, when in fact it's a whole lot more. So, the "parent" doesn't get loaded, then the rest of the phone doesn't get loaded, then it kind-of tries to load some MTP but fails, etc.. If I could browse to the phone through a non-Nokia connection I'd be happy to do so in order to implement any of a number of the suggestions above. But I can't get the computer to recognize the phone when the phone is plugged in by USB, regardless of all the solutions above.
The problem began a few days ago. It just up and wouldn't recognize the phone. I hadn't installed any updates that I knew of on either item, but it's possible that my memory is faulty and a newer version of this or that snuck in there and screwed it all up. I have tried a serious roll-back to a Restore Point about six weeks old, but that didn't solve the problem. This suggests to me that the problem is phone-resident, since the rollback was to a computer-based Restore Point and I don't have phone rollback capability.
This seriously hampers me. PC Suite, OVI, and some future version of Nokia Suite, will all be useless to me unless Nokia accomplishes the stunning act of supporting their software. I won't hold my breath. Just in general, you'd think that plug-and-play of a phone into your computer would be a lot simpler. Just take the cord -- stick it in the phone; stick it in the computer -- and shazam, you're plugged in. But NOOOOOO we're on NOOOOOOKIA ... Now I know why Microsoft wanted to buy them so badly. They knew they'd all get along and have the same assumptions about software -- that it doesn't really matter whether it works reliably on a user's computer at his home, as long as it works in theory on some programmer's ideal personal computer in Seattle once in a rare while. Nokia? Meet Microsoft. Microsoft? You and Nokia will get along juuuust fiiiine ...

  • Creative WebCam Vista Plus on USB PCI Card (VIA VT 6212) on Windows ME - doesnt work !!

PC turns off when the Vista Plus WebCam is connected to the USB port on my USB PCI Card
I use a primitive Intel Celeron 300Mhz processor with 64MB RAM on an Intel 440BX-AT Chipset running on Window ME. I recently installed a USB PCI Card (based on the VIA VT 622 chipset) which is a 394/USB 2.0 Combo. The problem is my 'Creative WebCam Vista Plus' doesnt work with it.
After I had installed the drivers on the 'Creative WebCam Vista Plus' CD - that is - without connecting the webcam to my USB PCI card the installation asks me to connect the webcam to the USB port and When I do that the PC just GOES OFF !
It starts up only in SAFE MODE and each time I've got to restore my PC.
How do I get the WebCam connected to my PC ?

9hours later and Ive given up. I cant get the Vista 64 Ultimate to work with the Audigy 2Nx usb sound card. Im very angry and very frustrated (not to mention very tired from the 2 late nights Ive spent trying to work it out). Im not a PC-noob, but am only 4days into my Vista ownership................... Im guessing now, after much research, that there will never be a driver that gets these units to work with Vista 64bit. thats pretty weak Creative. However, I dont want to use crappy onboard sound for my gaming. What is the suggestion?Should I be looking at returning this unit, and buying either the X-Fi Xtremegamer?Fatality Pro as?a highend device, or the X-Fi Xtremegamer for $00 less? Or should I be looking at another manufacturer. Would either of these x-fi gamers work with Vista 64bit Ultimate?suggestions please?

  • Can you boot from an external USB hard drive? (Neo2 Platinum)

As I'm tempted to get a 160Gb drive for Linux and AMD64 XP installations.  But obviously it needs to beable to boot from it.
    Thanks

I read a post recently about booting from a usb memory stick - I assume the principal is the same.  You need to make the usb drive bootable, in the same way that you would make a cd or a diskette bootable. In the example given about a usb memory stick, they suggested copying the contents of a win98 startup disk onto the memory stick.  Then, run 'sys.com' on the drive letter of the usb stick from the startup disk. Then, enable usb legacy support in the bios, and access the boot order to tell it to boot from the usb or legacy, I'm not sure which.
What you're in essence wanting to do is to copy the xpcd to the usb drive, so the format and files, etc., are the same.  Then, follow with the usb legacy stuff, etc....

  • I have a first generation apple tv synced to a itunes library on an external USB drive. Movies and Music Won't Play

Here's my setup. First Generation Apple TV. G4 Powermac running OS X 10.5.8 iTunes 10 with the Library stored on an External 3 Terabyte USB 2 drive. It's plugged into a PCI USB 2 card. Everything worked fine till I transferred my iTunes library to the external USB drive. Things seem to sync up fine. I have it set to copy TV shows to the Apple TV's internal drive and that seems to work but when I try to play music or movies that are streaming from the library, I get an error. With movies I get the "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized." error. The movie and music list seems up to date but now it won't play. Did I waste my money on this external drive? How do I get this setup to work?

I don't think this will be a complete answer to your question, but may point you in the right direction.
I have a similar setup (same OS X and iTunes versions), but my library is on a network attached 2TB harddrive (vs a USB 2 drive). Mine works fine, both syncing (which you don't have a problem with) and streaming. It's possible that iTunes doesn't like the USB 2 drive, but I don't know. Are you able to watch TV shows on your PowerMac after having moved the files to the USB drive? If you can watch content on your laptop but not on your AppleTV, it suggests the Apple TV doesn't like the USB drive.
Perhaps you didn't transfer iTunes library content correctly. (Forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know.) The iTunes library consists of a list of content and it's location (local harddrive, network drive, etc.). If you simply moved the files, but didn't actually update the library with the new locations, this can explain why you can't stream the content. The Apple TV displays what is in the library, but cannot play it if the library entry is pointing to the wrong location. Note: This "library update" I'm referring to is not the same as simply changing the iTunes media folder location in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced.
When I moved my content to an external drive, I had to delete everything in my iTunes Library, then re-import everything (File > Add to library). Don't let the phrase "delete everything in my iTunes library" freak you out. Deleting entries in the library is not the same as deleting the files (which you definitely do NOT want to do).
If you select an item in your iTunes library and press the Delete button, it asks for confirmation thus:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected TV show from your iTunes library?
It's OK to answer "Delete TV Show". It will then ask you if you want to delete the file. Do NOT delete the file. You can select your entire library and delete everything at once, just make sure you do NOT delete the files when it asks. When that is done, make sure the iTunes Media Folder Location is set to where you want and that the files are there. Then, go to File, Add to Library and re-import everything. It will take several minutes to more than an hour, depending on the speed of your computer and the size of your library.
I have had to do this everytime I've moved my library to different storage devices. If there is a simpler way, I am not aware of it.
    I hope this helps.

  • Trouble connecting to external USB hard disk through PC

I've had AirPort Extreme 802.11n for a few months which I use to connect to a printer and to share a USB hard disk between my eMac and my thinkpad. For a while everything was working beautifully. The disk showed up on my eMac desktop and in my Windows XP file explorer. Then recently the USB disk stopped connecting at all to either computer even after trying the old remedy of connecting directly to my Mac, dismounting it, and reconnecting. Then today a bunch of updates for the AirPort Utility became available and after updating to 5.3.1 on my eMac the disk shows up on my eMac again. But on my PC here's the situation: the disk appears in the AirPort Utility for Windows (5.3.1) but I can't find it in Windows file explorer. I tried the alternative ways of connecting shown here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306119
    but no dice.

Uhmmmmmm, you meant to say the Macbook Air DOES have (2)  USB PORTS
GENEDI, yes, you can connect a 2.5" USB external HD to your Mac AIR, ...... done it a 1000 times

  • Displayport audio vs USB audio

I have pre-Thunderbolt 27 display that is offering my 2011 Mac Mini 2 audio options : Display Port vs USB audio
Now, I beleive if I will have to plug in the USB cable either way, to ge the USB hub, microphone, camera to work.
So I don't believe I can necessarily save the USB port (if I could, then why would there be Thunderbolt?).
What I want to know is there any advantage to using Display Audio over USB ?
    - Is the sound any better ?
    - When I am using USB networking for other purposes, will Display Audio have less USB bus contention and play better ?
    - Similar as above, when playing music over Display Port, will my USB devices be faster due to less contention ?
I am leaning towards Display Port audio unless someone can give a definitive answer
    Thanks.

You say 'no', but then why did they add the option on the Mac Mini? ie It wasn't to free the USB connector,  as that is still used anyhow for the camera, mic, usb hub and software updates.
Software updates?  Not sure what that has to do with this.  But anyhow I have a mac pro with a 27" mini-displayport apple display and both options are available too.  It has nothing to do with power (I'm certainly not underpowered).  It's simply that those ports are available audio out devices.
On my old Macbook Pro, when viewing live video from my Hauppagauge HDPVR via a different USB port on the Mac (not the screen), the sound was sometimes choppy if I was doing other tasks as well.
You machine has its limits in processing power and is probably having trouble using too many processor intensive processes.  Use your Activity Monitor to see which processes are using large amounts of cpu time.
The display has a USB hub that chains of the USB port, so if have other devices working like my external USB Bluray drive, then I think there could be contention when using that also when reading/writing.
Contention is managed everywhere; hard drives, usb buss, fireware buss,  pci buss, memory buss, and any others I can't think of at the moment.  You're splitting hairs worrying about sending audio to usb ports which is a blip on the overall processing of generating that audio in the first place.  In other words its the processes and efficiency of your machine that are a bootleneck.
So I am really hoping someone will confirm that the audio data was moved to the mini-display plug to provide more bandwidth via the USB controller, or to guarantee bandwidth for consistent audio.
    Good luck with that.

  • Scanner on USB 1

    Just a quickie,
I'm looking at using a USB powered scanner with my eMac which only has USB 1 and I'm just wanting to be sure it will work. I understand it will be significantly slower than USB 2 but I don't mind that for now as I intend to get a new mac later in the year.
Am I right in believing that the scanner will still work over USB 1 but will just be slower? The scanner I'm looking at is a CanoScan LiDE 70.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

This may or may not directly relate to the LiDE 70, but I can warn firsthand from a Canon MP160 that if you install the Canon software from CD, it will ask you for an administrative password and tell you to restart after installing; before restarting, open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions on the hard drive. The Canon installer mis-set permissions on /System/Library and /Library, which is not a good thing. Repair Permissions before restarting, and it should work quite well on a USB 1.1 model Mac. (If you forget and restart without repairing permissions and the computer hangs on startup, Start Up in Safe Mode --- which can take upwards of 20 minutes to finish --- and then repair permissions.)

  • Saving an Emac HD to a powerbook G4 HD

Can I transfer the entire emac HD to my powerbook G4 12" (10.4.11), and save it there? I have plenty of HD space. I want to do a clean install on my emac and then transfer back some of the saved emac HD from the powerbook.

Mac OS X doesn't have a "clean install" per se:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
As for using an Powerbook's hard drive to store an eMac's hard drive contents, yes that's possible. Just don't attempt to boot the eMac's old System folder from your Powerbook. Target Disk Mode allows you to copy the entire contents carefully over into a Disk Image or separate disk partition on your Powerbook. You want it self contained, so that you can later recall as much of the information as possible when restoring the eMac's contents. Target Disk Mode is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
I'm assuming you desire to erase your eMac, is that the intent? And if so, why?

  • Emacs opening files and lisp

I have been playing around with emacs for the mac. I usually use it from the command line, but I would also like to use it from the GUI so I can get rid of the text editor and word. I have set it so that text files open emacs, but it opens emacs with the scratch buffer and not the actual file, how can I get emacs to open the file from finder?
Does this have anything to do with the lisp directory/file? What is the lisp? I get the following message when I open files from the command line with emacs. I have set up the following alias
    alias emacs='/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs'.
"Warning: Lisp directory `/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/share/emacs/site-lisp' does not exist."
    Thanks

Hi Nils, I have tried both ways to open emacs, and the both work the same, they both give the same warning too. Thanks for the lisp link, I didn't realise the lisp is an AI programming language, I don't know if it is the same thing or not? I do know that my work computer (Mandrake Linux) has an extensive lisp file that contains all sorts of things that I assume tell emacs how to work ie, which syntax to highligh for a program language that I use at work, and how to integrate LaTeX etc. It does say not to blindly copy it too, so it probably won't work on my mac. I was wondering if anyone had any idea about how/where to create the lisp file, and what to put in it.
Hi Don, I did look at that emacs, but I use the emacs on aqua one instead. I have just looked at it again, and it might be a better option. Do you know if there is a way to remove the icons at the top of the page? I don't like the appearance, thanks
