USB 2.0 Power issues involving external HD's

I'm curious if it is possible to reroute the power from 1 USB 2.0 port to the other one...? I have a WD ext HD and the power from one is not enough to get the little thing going. This is very frustrating...! There is the option of adding a Y cable splitting the USB into both ports. I would like to just take the power away from one and add it to the other. Is this possible?
If it is how might one be able to do this?
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Sick

I've purchesed 2 different brands of expansion cards for my laptop, one by Adaptec, the other is a Belkin. I'm having just about the same problem you are. The USAB 2.o ports work fine for my mouse, but when I plug in the iPod, the computer freezes up. When I unplug the iPod nothing happens. When I remove the expansion card, the computer comes back to life and eventually iTunes opens.
I'm not sure this is a USB 2.o issue or an iTunes problem. It's been the same with both cards I've tried. The iPod works fine through the onboard USB 1.1 ports, though. Just slower. I've even tried disabling the onboard USB's just in case there was a conflict, but no change.
Any other suggestions?

  • USB 2.0 Power Issue, Win 2000

Hello I have an issue with my iPod nano 1GB not charging on my Windows 2000 (SP4) computer. I have it connected via an add on USB 2.0 card that claims it is sending 500mA to the connector. Is this considered 'high power' enough for the iPod to charge?
The iPod will connect and sync up via iTunes and the battery indicator in the top right will flash grey to green with the lightning flash overlayed and go solid green for a while but will not continue. The lightning flash will dissapear after a few moments and it will show the normal battery indicator.
    Any ideas what is up?
Windows 2000 SP4, newest version of iTunes for Windows, newest drivers for USB add in card have been installed and the device in the control panel (the USB 2.0 Root Hub) shows the hub is self powered and there is 500mA availible per device. I have tried all USB ports on the machine. They all give the same issue... is this an issue with the iPod or with the power coming through the USB ports?

If the iPod is in Auto update (this is the default) iTunes will eject it after it updates and Windows 2000 shuts down power to the USB port. Teh only way to get around this is as youhave found, enable disk use, which keep the iPod connected.
With Windows XP, you can Eject the iPod and still keep power going to the port.

  • PowerBook 15" 1.5GHz USB 2.0 power issue

I have a 15" 1.5 GHz USB 2.0 2MB Ram PowerBook just upgraded to Leopard October 27, 07. Now the problem. Screen turned black and the computer shut down and started making a high pitched whine. I disconnected the power and it went quiet. Started up from the battery and all was fine, plugged in the power it started to whine but stayed on. I then pulled the battery and it stayed on with no whine. I thought OK it is an old battery that didn't hold a charge and was due for replacement. Borrowed a friends old battery that still had some life in it with the same result as with my battery. OK both batteries were at a state to cause this so I ordered a new battery. Then I took it to the Apple store to see what they thought. They decided it was the logic board and as the machine was out of warranty it would cost about 800.00 to repair. My thought was that the dc-dc board had fried but have yet to find one for this model.
The Machine still runs fine using AC or battery but both can't coexist and the battery discharges.
I am looking for ideas and input as my wife really likes this machine. We are thinking of a replacement off eBay and maybe swapping parts.

Seasons greetings and welcome to the Apple discussions.
On the 1.5Ghz Powerbook, I believe the DC-in card connects directly to the logic board, unlike the 12" PB that has a dc-to-dc card. One source for a replacement DC-in card is at http://pbparts.com (http://www.ifixit.com was out of stock, however, you probably know they have guides to show you how to do the replacement).

  • USB Power adapter for external harddrives..

I found a post regarding this issue but wanted to get more info if anyone else has experienced this problem.
I've a Macally external fire/usb enclosure that powers up and mounts directly on to my PB Aluminum 1.67
laptop but the USB portion doesn't draw power. It simply makes that "clicking" sound.
After trouble shooting with Apple and MacAlly . I digress ..no one in the US service calls now mainly overseas..a
MAJOR drag when communicating (bad reception,etc..)
It was later told to me about the power issue with the aluminum series not drawing enough power for the older
    firewire/usb or USB only enclosures.
I was told that I had 2 options:
    1) purchase a AC power adapter to run the USB part of the drive
    2) get a "USB express" power adapter that connects between the PB and the external HD
I wouldn't fuss over the USB part of this external HD, but I'd like it to work so I can exchange info
between my other firewire/usb drive and the MacAlly firewire/usb simultaneously.
It's a time saver for backing up info between these two drives.
I would like to avoid using an AC adapter just to power the USB part of this drive.
That's why I purchased this drive as it ran off the power from the computer.
Any leads on various "AC free" USB power adapters, or anything like minded DO reply back.
as always thanks in advance.. ~A~

    Hi, Atcandela.
I've a Macally external fire/usb enclosure that powers up and mounts directly on to my PB Aluminum 1.67 laptop but the USB portion doesn't draw power.
Do you mean it mounts and works OK when connected via FireWire, but not when connected via USB? If so, that's unsurprising. I would be surprised to hear that it doesn't mount when you use the FireWire connnection, because most drives are able to get enough power from that port.
Does MacAlly not offer a cable for your drive that allows it to draw power from both your USB ports? Some manufacturers of external drives or enclosures do offer such a cable, and it's well worth buying because it's much smaller and more portable than an AC adapter. Have a look at this one from Western Digital — it might fill the bill for you.

  • USB Power Issue

Suddenly my MacBook Pro won't charge my iPhone. It says there isn't enough power:
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled."
I get that message even when there is NOTHING connected to the USB cable when I plug it in.
It is allowing me to continue to use a Kensington Expert Mouse corded trackball.

For power issues anywhere, perform an SMC Reset.

  • USB issues with External Drive

I am running a 1 TB Fantom drive (MDC1000) (2 Partitions) on new OS 10.5.6 MacPro via one of the back USB ports. Been using the drive for over a year with no problems.
Now intermittent issue with mounting drive. After successfully mounting and letting the drive cycle down, the USB2 connection disconnects when the drive starts back up again. I receive the Device Removal Message, then the drive tries to remount. Then I receive the message again. What is strange is that the drive seems to work fine when data is being accessed consistently.
I clicked off the "put the hard disc to sleep" checkbox in the Energy Saver preference which seemed to stabilize the intermittent problem, but now there is an issue with the machine not coming out of sleep, and I get the startup clock icon when I try to restart. The machine does not shut down with the USB connected.
I'm still trying to determine if it's the drive or the machine. I ran the disc utility and repaired the disc as the intermittent disconnections seem to corrupt the trees and directories. I am able to fix them. Is there any utility for testing the USB ports? There should BE.
Could this be due to a recent update? Or lack of firmware update from the drive manufacturer? Seemed to come out of nowhere.
    Thanks for any info.

Just to follow up with this for anyone has a similar problem.
Tried new cables and seemed better for a short time, but then still would not mount successfully.
I called Micronet after I didn't hear back via their email form. The tech there seemed to suspect it was the power connection on the network card in the drive which would make some sense. He confirmed there were no firmware upgrades for the Fantom drive.
Also tried to mount the drive unsuccessfully via Firewire and it did not work.
So my conclusion is that it's not the drive mechanism but the network card in the drive. I have a sinking suspicion that there is a power issue in my office space, which may have affected the drive. I've had other machines and devices which have had power issues in the past.
Does anyone know any simple and easy way to test electrical integrity in a work/office environment?
I bought another 2tb drive, transferred the data and reformatted the old drive to see if that does anything.

  • Unable to Troubleshoot Power Issues on Mac mini 2011

I have been having odd and intermittent power issues with my Mac mini 2011 and could really use some help before I resign myself to taking it into an Apple Store. It's under warranty, but I now live in another country so I hope I don't need to ship it should it come down to that.
However, I have searched this topic a lot, and not only have I tried troubleshooting it, I haven't seen any power issues with other owners of this model. That leads me to think that the power supply itself is probably OK.
First of all, I live in China and the building I live in seems to have a questionable power supply. The air conditioner for example simply would not work and the repairman spent two hours messing around with wires inside the outlet and in the breakers. That did the trick, so I wonder if I'm simply not getting enough juice?
    Main symptoms:
    - My monitor recognizes an analog signal but will not light up (black monitor). Unplugging and replugging adaptor doesn't do anything.
    - Startup Keyboard Commands (e.g. Cmmd-R) may work, but I can't tell because the monitor won't light up. Letting the computer boot up though I can hear keyboard volume keys and such making the standard sounds. I can usually restart using the keyboard too.
    - My 2T external HD more often than not dismounts as well.
    - I can't hear any computer activity after the chime (hard drive, etc.).
    - Since I can hear the chime and there is audio feedback through the keyboard, I think that eliminates hardware problems such as logic board failure or bad RAM.
    - I can't boot even if I unplug all USB peripherals.
    - Holding down the power button (I have it set to make the computer sleep as well as shut down) often won't shut down the computer, but it seems to stay in sleep no matter how long I hold it. Unplugging the computer finally shuts it down, obviously.
    - Unplugging and waiting 5 minutes or so and powering up again doesn't seem to make any difference, nor does switching sockets, plugging directly into the wall, etc.
Problems began about two weeks ago, got better, and then worse again. Now I'm just keeping the computer and monitor on (never sleep 24/7).
Miraculously, after much frustration and countless restarts, suddenly the screen will turn on to reveal a fully booted system that was running all along in the background. No startup screen- the monitor just magically comes on again. Often I find that my external has unmounted, but it's no big deal to get to remount. At this stage, the Mac is still very quiet and for a while the system is sluggish, though it hops back into action in 5 or 10 minutes.
At first I thought it was just my monitor, and though that's possible I suppose, it seems I'm just not getting enough juice. Once the monitor is on though, everything is fine: I can power it off and on with no problems. But I can't just leave my computer on forever though.
    Any help appreciated.

Well, with the other monitor (which did not work with the mini either but worked fine on a laptop), I was able to narrow the trouble spot down to either a faulty Mini Display to VGA adaptor or a damaged port. I could determine that all the other ports (incld. the USB drive, programs, internet, etc., were all working fine behind the big black GUI all through sound feedback, so I seriously doubted it could be a supply problem or a residential electric problem.
I took my mini and adaptor to a "Mac Shop" (reseller) here in China, and found it quite professional, just like a Mac Store. They tested my machine, and although they didn't have VGA monitors, they said I could return the new $30 USD adaptor if it didn't work. But as I'm writing this on the monitor now, the new adaptor did the trick.
The long and short of all this is that I've read a lot about display problems with the mini and I suspect that most of these problems are adaptor related. I myself tried to save some bucks by buying a third party plug and lived and learned. I hope the Apple adaptor works like a champ, and if it doesn't, I'll know the first thing to eliiminate next time.

  • Pb with X200, NEC based USB 3.0 PCI card and external USB 3.0 HD

Hello, I ordered a USB 3.0 Express Card based on the NEC chipset. I am using a Lenovo X200 under XP SP3 and I have an external Buffalo Ministation USB3.0 HD. No problem to install the Express Card driver, the card is recognized but the HD won't mount. I have the USB connection beep and in the next 10 sec the USD disconnection beep. This is not a low power issue, I connected to the Express Card a power supply and have the same issue. In addition, this config, Express Card and Ministation Buffalo just work fine on a T60 under Windows 7. Any idea? Many thanks ! Tom

I have looked at several options and would be happy to go with either eSata or USB 3.0.  I have heard some bad reviews about the USB 3.0 PCI offerings out there though.
On the one hand, I have an unused eSata enclosure so I would not have to buy one,  on the other hand a few USB 3.0 ports on the machine would allow grerater expandability with a USB 3.0 hub hung off the back.  ( can you get eSata hubs?  never thought of that until just now)
The nearest thing to an eSATA hub is a 'SATA port-multiplier'. This allows connecting up to 4 SATA drives to a single SATA port.
Note: Not all SATA or eSATA cards support 'port-multiplier' functionality. The CalDigit card says it does support port-multiplier enclosures, what this means is that a single eSATA cable can be connected to an external box containing multiple SATA drives and see and use them all.

  • USB 2.0 power low?

I just upgraded from a powerbook G4 to a MacBook Pro. My blackberry would charge from empty to full in about an hour on the G4, and takes several hours on the MacBook Pro. Either port is the same long time.
Are the new machines providing less power to the USB port?

    Ricktoronto wrote:
SInce people complained constantly about the lack of power in the G4 Powerbook ( not enough to power most external USB drives was typical) it is not likely the MacBook Pro has less ( in part since it powers USB drives quite well).
I would say it depends on which port your using. I seem to have lots of power issues with the left USB (next to MagSafe port) and non with the right one. A Apple genus seem to think it's something about one being on the main logic board and other on a daughter card. However, you'd think Apple's engineer would of made them both the same? :s

  • My USB port doesn't detect my external hard drive. What could be wrong? (WD My Passport for Mac)

My Passport for Mac originally worked and I was easily able to download files. It even worked on my MacBook Pro. Now, when I attach this external hard drive and open Finder, the external drive is not there. I've run Disk Utility. I've shut down, hit alt+command+p+r and still, the USB port does not recognize the external drive. Can anyone help.
I don't know if this started after I had problems with a virus (Trojan) and I used MacKeeper AND Sophos AND MacBooster to try to "clean up" the virus. I delete the viruses (8 of them from email), and they come back with another check. This makes me wonder what is the best antivirus software!
    Thanks for anyone's help!

Even though it is dated, check through the steps discussed in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1126326
When you restarted the Mac, did you connect the WD drive while the Mac was shutdown, make sure the drive was powered if it has an external power supply, and then start the Mac?  I always turn on all external components before powering up the MacBook Pro or iMac.

  • Windows 8.1 in Bootcamp on iMac27 - USB Joystick loses power?

I have a Saitek joystick I use for flying games. It works great on my ancient Dell XP machine.
However, having bought a 27" iMac last week, installed Windows 8.1 in Boot Camp on it - the joystick loses power after a minute when I'm in a game.
I'm not sure if the power even stays on the joystick long enough for a game (such as Battlefield 3) to see the controller.
    It's USB.
Right now, the same USB port on the iMac is charging my iPhone just fine, sync too. So, the port is good and the joystick on another system is good - just don't know why the lights go out on the stick and it becomes "dead" as it were?

I would suspect the win8.1 driver more then I would tink bootcamp or the imac being the issue
usb in general should not require more then 5volts and 0.5Amp
you can try connecting a power usb hub (this is a device which have 1 connector it connects to the port on the computer and then have several ports you can connect other usb devices to)
if that also "loses" power then you know it's not a power issue but a driver issue
driver for the joystick or driver because you did not install the require apple drivers for windows made in bootcamp in osx

  • Is it OK to use USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive?

Is it OK to use a USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive? I was told by Sweetwater tech support to use Firewire, but both the FW400 and FW800 connections crash my audio interface software mixer (Presonus' "Universal Control" software).
Both Firewire connections also create a 10 second hang for each Command-Save that I do.
USB 2.0 for the external drive seems to be working so far, but is there some reason I should be wary of using this as my go-to project drive? In other words, I am imagining that there was probably some definite reason that the tech support guy mentioned not to use it. But maybe not. It's a brand new Glyph. In any event, it's nice to have the 10 second hang eliminated, and I was just looking for some advice, since digging into the Presonus software issue could take some time.

If you have a mac pro, why not stick the external HDD inside via one of your many SATA cables & have it run 9 times faster than your USB?
Or stick a HDD CADDY in your mac pro, so you can slot in a full sized 3TB HDD for recording, and when you are done, pull it out & slip it in an external enclosure if you need to take it places?

  • Mavericks 10.9-10.9.1 bug/issue/problem: external drives connected through thunderbolt or firewire are not put to sleep when iMac goes to sleep

Previous to Mavericks (10.9 - 10.9.1) I've had no issues with external firewire or thunderbolt connected drives to be put to sleep. However, since Mavericks all of my external drives are not put to sleep when my iMac, or Mac Pro go to sleep.
How can a company such as Apple, pushing people to have external devices like hard drives, is not on top of fixing this issue? Apple pushed for firewire and thunderbolt, thus All external drives I've owned are firewire. Because of speed. I bought thunderbolt adapters for firewire, and before Mavericks all worked great. Now that we have 10.9.1 update, this is still an issue!
I'm aware of the temporary solution of connecting the drive through USB to make it work, this is not a solution, but a hack.
Please let Apple know that this is a known issue, and there should be a fix for it. Everyone's data depends on it! Not only current external backups, but also external sensitive hard drives we rely on. Currently, the following makes are experiencing this issue: Lacie, OWC (Elite Pro), WD, Promise, Seagate, Toshiba, G-Drive.

Hello all, new to the forums. I was wondering if you could help me with an issue with my Zen. When I plug it in on a desktop(Windows xp) it tells me that the usb has exceeded power limit and if i plug my Zen into my laptop(Windows 7) it shuts the laptop down completely and i have to restart. I plug it into my wifes laptop(windows vista) and it shuts down as wekll. I have formatted the Zen to the new firmware and back to some older ones as well, and now it wont start because i cant recharge it. Any thoughts.

!On a motherboard, normally manufacturers enable 2-4 ports works on one USB interface. These are the ports you usually see in front of your CPU and most likely connected to just one USB interface (hub) on the motherboard. The USB ports, connected to your mohterboard interface, only outputs so much power. If a device or devices attached to this hub exceeds the power output either the speed slows down or device won't function at all that is why some USB devices require their own wall chargers.
If you are getting "USB device has exceeded the power limits" error, this maybe caused by a damage USB port or the device just sucks too much power on the USB hub (which I doubt). You can try unplugging the other USB devices connected and connect only the player and see if that helps or use the rear USB port which I suggested above. But on your case, you tried this with two laptops and both shuts down when the player is connected so this could be an issue with the player already. With that said, I can only suggest to contact customer support and have it repaired.
