Usb 2 connection to laserjet 1100 possible?

want to use hp laserjet 1100 with laptop but can't find usb cable with connector that will fit laserjet's line in connector.

I think the LJ1100 printer has a mini parallel connector on it. The cable you currently use would have the mini parallel on one end and a 25pin serial (male) on the other. I have never seen a mini parallel to USB cable. What you may be able to use is a Linksys WPS54GU2 device. You can look up the model to verify but, if I remember correctly, you can hookup your printer to the device with the parallel cable (or USB if supported) and either connect the device wirelessly or wired to your router and you will have a networked printer available.

  • Airport Express - unable to print via USB connected HP1505 laserjet

Hi all - I have an HP Laserjet 1505 connected to my airport express USB port. I can 'see' the printer and set it up without issue. However, whenever I try printing to it, nothing happens. The printer appears 'on hold' but nothing ever prints. I have tried restarting everything, uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and alternative print drivers (GIMP) with no luck. Love to hear from someone who has the same setup working. Thanks in advance.

could be you find pointers in the _*Printer Troubleshooting Guide*_.

  • Serial to USB connection- HP Laserjet 4MP not recognised

I am trying to connect an HP Laserjet 4MP to my Intel iMac running OSX 10.5.8. sure its old, but it is solid and reliable. Slow does not concern me.
The printer worked fine when last used. I have just purchased a serial to USB cable for the printer as the printer originally used AppleTalk.
System Profile recognises the cable. The cable chip is a Prolific 2303 which I am told is Mac compatible and that seems confirmed as System Profiler lists the USB-serial controller. So why can the OS not see the printer?
Check the HP printer drivers? Of course! So far I have downloaded and installed 2 sets of printer drivers. The first was a Laserjet and Edgline print-only.mpkg. labelled OSX. Probably too old. The second, PrinterDriverUpdate v1.1.1 (350MB) from the Apple Archive. The Archive listed the 4MP in its list of drivers contained in the package. Can’t get them to work!
I cannot get bonjour to see the HP printer! I read elsewhere that others are using the old HP 4MP on snow Leopard so Intel and system compatibility would not seem to be a problem.
I found the HP site murder to negotiate and finally downloaded from Apple and AppleUpdate. If you know the correct HP URL for Mac driver downloades that may help. So far I have run into so many dead ends on that site I could fill an A4 page with criticism.
Does anyone have suggestions which may help please?
Update. I checked the printer drivers via manual driver selection and found the HP 4 plus v2013.111 driver which worked in the past. So the driver is there, why does Bonjour not see it? I click on add printer and nothing new is found!

Helpful response as usual thank you BDAqua.
Network shows USB controller Not Connected. When I select and click window at left on USB controller (Which is red) the resulting dialogue box does not offer Apple talk. Just Modem,DNS, WINS, Proxies and PPP. Apple Talk is only offered for Ethernet or Airport.
Having had a nights sleep on this problem I conclude the serial port has died.
I think I shall return the serial cable and try connecting with a 36 pin Parallel port.
    Thank you for the thought.

    Hi gingerjedi,
It's normal with your actual Airport and confirm by Apple, but ...
Only If you see your printer in Airport Admin Utility under Printer :
    1) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/foomatic-rip-2008-01-30. dmg
    2) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/gplgs-8.61-ub.dmg
    3) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/hpijs-2.7.10-UB.dmg
    4) Repair permissions with Onyx or with your Install Disk
    5) Restart your computer
    6) Restart your connection with your Printer (Cable-Power-Connection with your Airport)
    7) In Prefs Panes, select Printer ( + ) and install a new Printer
    8) Select your indicated Printer in the menu choice. If you have a Name for your Airport, give this Name under Place or Emplacement (excuse, i am French) and select HP Deskjet D2400 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended).
    9) And click Done
With this Solution, you can just print. All other software possibilities can not run under the Airport. It is normal.
I think all is ok for you.

  • Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups?

Is it possible to plug in an external HDD to the USB connection on my Airport Express for backups? As a kind of cheapo Time Capsule?

Unfortunately no, because the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a printer and a Keyapan remote control. Hard drives are not supported.
You would need an AirPort Extreme for that type of functionality.

Good News: Am able to wireless print from iMac's and MacBook Pro.
Bad News: Unable to print from Vista laptop and XP Pro (SP3) desktop PCs; when Ethernet or wireless connected to the Airport. Current versions of Bonjour and HP print drivers have been downloaded to both PCs. Using 10.0.1.1 IP address as indicated by Airport Utility. (No problem printing when USB connected directly to Airport.) Apple, HP and Microsoft tech support specialists have not able to resolve problem.
I would greatly appreciate your help.

I seem to be having a similar problem..But no luck finding any help. Apple and Microsoft and hp (my printers brand) all point the finger at each other and can't seem to help me resolve the issue. I would love to help if I could find an answer to the problem myself. Keep me posted if you figure anything out, would you? I will do the same. • [SOLVED] Can't get CUPS to add / detect HP Laserjet 1100 printer

I moved my computer downstairs... after a few weeks I decided to move my printer down and set it up. I had it working perfectly a few weeks ago before the move... however now I can't get CUPS to detect or add my printer. At first when I moved my printer downstairs the CUPS web interface had my previous setup still there and had my printer detected / added. However, printing jobs would just stay in the queue and never print. I did some googling and someone mention to remove the printer and re-add it. Well I tried to to that and got stuck on trying to re-add it. CUPS will not identify my printer now. Funny thing is I just now remember I had a similiar issue a few months back and I remembered now I fixed the queue issue just by unplugging the power to my printer and leaving it off for 5min then replugging it in. I have tried all the steps on the wiki and I can't seem to figure this one out. dmesg does output that it is detecting my printer. I have my printer hooked up via a mini parralel to USB cord. If you have any other questions for me please shoot
Unplugging and repluggin my printer gives me this msg in dmesg:
    usblp0: removed
usb 6-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
usb 6-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 4 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x4348 pid 0x5584
hp-toolbox also does not detect any printers. I have tried restarting cupsd... Any help is appreciated... I need to get printing up ASAP since school has started.
lsusb output this amongst other things:
Bus 006 Device 004: ID 4348:5584 WinChipHead CH34x printer adapter cable
If it matters I am using XFCE as my DE... I also do not remember using the CUPS interface to intially add the printer... I do not exactly remember how I did it... but the web interface looked completely new to me and I am rather sure that is not how I initially went about doing it... perhaps I used some GUI frontend for it...
EDIT: After reading the forum descriptions closer... perhaps this should be moved to the Workstation section.

skottish wrote:I'm curious why you're using gutenprint drivers for a HP printer. hplip provides everything needed for HP printers.
Tell you the truth... I have no idea how to change it or what not... I didn't even add that manually... just rebooted my computer one day and it appeared there.
hpsetup does not detect my printer
system-config-printer gives me an error when I try and add a printer. I manually specify the location to file:/dev/usb/lp0 ... I scroll down find HP LaserJet 1100 and the recommended driver is hpjis 3.9.8. I select that and I get the following:
There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-not-possible'
EDIT: I am about ready to chunk to this printer out the window... I have been messing with this for about a week now and I just keep getting two steps forward and then three steps backwards.
The system-config-printer dialog looked familiar and I believe that when I intially was able to set up my printer and had it working upstairs I used that dialog to add my printer.
Some googling brought me to this ubuntu bug report
Your USB-to-parallel adapter does not pass through the printer ID. The device is recognized as printer, but there is no information about manufacturer and model. Therefore system-config-printer and hal-cups-utils automatically assign the text-only printer to the unknown device.
In general you have to run system-config-printer and manually choose manufacturer and model.
That you cannot print at all is a bug of the "hal" CUPS backend. See
    https://fedorahosted.org/hal-cups-utils/ticket/5
    Try to do the following:
    cupsctl FileDevice=yes
    lpadmin -p <your print queue name> -E -v file:/dev/usb/lp0
This is an ugly workaround which works if you have only one printer (the one with the adapter cable) on USB. Does it work for you?
Now the problem is that I can not add my printer via the system-config-printer. However, if I go the CUPS web interface and hit manage printers the driver is listed as the following:
    Driver:    Local Raw Printer (grayscale)
Now I think that is my issue... I need to have it set to the correct driver... if I hit modify printer and select my Make/Model I get the following access error:
    401 Unauthorized
Enter your username and password or the root username and password to access this page. If you are using Kerberos authentication, make sure you have a valid Kerberos ticket.
However there is no prompt or I do not know where to enter this information to.

  • Printing from HP LaserJet 1100

I have an HP LaserJet 1100 that used to print from a PC that died. How can I get it to print from my new iMac G5? I went to the HP website and couldn't find drivers for any Mac OS. Thanks for any help.

Thanks, I downloaded the drivers and will try.
Dumb question: what's the best way to connect the printer to my iMac? Printer doesn't have a USB port... (connects via parallel printer cable). Thx

  • MacBook + HP LaserJet 1100 + AirPort

I would like to print wirelessly using my HP LaserJet 1100 with my new MacBook, but it looks like it will be more difficult than I thought.
    Problem #1:
My HP does not officially work with my macbook. Is GutenPrint or HPIJS the better solution for a driver and printing wirelessly (I suspect GutenPrint)?
    Problem #2:
The HP uses a parallel port connection, not a USB connection. It looks like Sabrent, Sewell and Belkin all make USB to parallel port adapters, but whether or not one will work seems to be pretty hit or miss and specific to the computer/printer combination. Which one will (or is most likely) to work?
    Problem #3:
As I said, I want to print wirelessly. I have read several posts that say that some printers don’t work with an AirPort base station, even if that printer works with the actual computer (I think it is because the printer does not advertise that it is available over the network). Does GutenPrint overcome this problem (as suggested here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=825581&tstart=15)? If not, what workarounds exist?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

How do you have it connected, USB adapter or parallel port?

  • HP Laserjet 1100

I send a document to the HP Laserjet 1100.  The document shows up in the Queue.  It then disappears from the queue as if it printed, but it did not print.
If I remove the paper, or turn off the printer, and then send the document to the printer, it hangs in the queue until I turn the printer on or put the paper back in the feeder.
It worked on Friday, last week, but would not work starting on Monday.
Also, I can print a test page from the printer self-test, but not from the printer properties in Windows 7.

How do you have it connected, USB adapter or parallel port?

  • HP Laserjet 1100 - print fails

    Hi
I have an OLD HP Laserjet 1100 which I used to be able to print from fine on my old XP (SP2) machine. I have recently set the printer up on a new laptop running XP (SP3) using a parallel to USB converter. It's using the same drivers. However, now, whenever I try print I get an immediate message saying "Print failed". Doesnt give me a reason. Just won't print!! If there is anyone out there who can help me I'd appreciate it!
    Regards,
    AEC
p.s. Buying a new printer is unfortunately not really an option.

Hi there.  This is funny, or sad really.  I have the exxact problem.  When it doesn't print it says this printer is not connected.
That just can't be.  What about firmware?  While nosing around the HP site I noticed it says firmware needs to be updated.
I'm not sure how to do this.
    Have a great day,

  • WiFi Connect HP LaserJet 100 color MFP M175nw

I have been using a HP LaserJet 100 color MFP M175nw succesfully over my home WiFi network for a few months now. I had a Comcast (WiFi) outage yesterday and had to re-configure my cable-modem/WiFi-Router (combo unit - Motorola Surfboard SBG6580). I used a new SSID name and password when I reconfigured the modem/router.
I assumed that it should be simple enough to re-point my printer to the new SSID and provide the new password. I assumed wrong and I am unbale to get my printer back on to my WiFi network.
I was hoping to launch HP Device Toolbox via the USB connection and reset the SSID name and password but I am unable to connect to the printer to do this.
    Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi @sp2014 ,
I see by your post that you had to reconfigure the router and now the printer won't connect back to the wireless network. I will certainly do my best to help you.
    Restore the printer's network defaults.
    Touch the Setup button. (wrench)
    Select Network Setup Menu.
    Then select Restore Defaults.
Print out a configuration report to make sure the IPv4 address is 0.0.0.0 and the SSID is cleared.
    Printing a Configuration Report.
Follow these steps to setup the wireless again through Wireless Direct.
On the printer touch the setup button, (wrench) then select network setup menu, select wireless menu, select wireless direct and turn it on.
On the computer, in the bottom right corner click on the wireless icon and select the printer from the list to connect to.
Then open Internet Explorer and type in the IP address (192.168.223.1) for the printer in the address bar.
This will load the embedded web server for the printer.
Select the networking tab, wireless on the left hand side.
Fill out all your network information, select infrastructure, select your network name, put in password and type of encryption.
    Apply settings.
Click on the wireless icon and connect back to your network name.
Print out a configuration report to make sure the IP address is valid. (192... or 10....)
Then run the Add Printer Wizard or reinstall the software again.
You can also setup the printer back up on the wireless network by first connecting by a Ethernet connection.
If you have a Ethernet cable, connect it from the printer to the router.
Wait about a minute, print the configuration page to see if you get a IP address.
Then type the IP address into Internet Explorer's address bar to bring up the printer's web page.
Select the networking tab, wireless on the left hand side.
Fill out all your network information, select infrastructure, select your network name, put in password and type of encryption. Apply settings.
Then wait a minute to see if you get a wireless light on the printer, print the configuration page and check the IP address again. Then type the IP address into Internet Explorer's address bar to bring up the printer's web page.
Run the Add Printer Wizard or reinstall the software again.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!

  • Connecting HP LaserJet P3015 printer (via Cat5e) to Extreme base

I've configured my network (thanks to the help of this forum):
Airport Extreme Base station (extended by Airport Express).
My laptops (connected wirelessly) run OS10.7.5.  I am using Airport Utility 6.3.1
I am attempting to configure an HP LaserJet P3015n (which apparently is part of the HP3010 series) via ethernet cable.  I've connected the ethernet cable from Airport Extreme to printer.
Previously, I had successfully configured the HP3015n via USB cable when my Airport Express was my "main" base station.
But now I'm unable, since configuring the Airport Extreme as my main base station and the printer via Cat5e cable, to get the HP3015n recognized via Print & Scan in the Sys Prefs or through the printer window (e.g. when you print a doc via MS Word).
I read this Apple Support Doc:  "OS X Mountain Lion: Set up an IP printer" (even though I'm using 10.7.5) to see if I could glean some info.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11478?viewlocale=en_US
    What I've done or noted:
    1) removed the old p3015n listing from that I had configured via USB in case something needs to be reset
    2) selected the 3015n printer (via the + sign) and tried to add software drivers for it.  I select the 3015n printer as the one listed "nearby" printer (and I wonder if that printer is coming up because it was previously configured on my network or if this is a "fresh" "sighting" by my network?  When I do attempt to download software for it, Apple at first reports that the software is avail but after what seems to be an attempted download, that it can't be installed.
    3) I note that the HP printer address (which I gleaned form the printer's LCD screen) is 10.0.1.9
    4) The driver appears to be named 3010 even though the printer is 3015.  Previously I had installed the 3010 driver and that is the name by which the printer has previously been recognized.
    5)  I was able to printer out some pages on the printer via the LCD screen with all kinds of info.  Including an "Embedded Jetdirect page," "Embedded Protocol page," and a "Configuration page."  My understanding from reading a few Apple Support Docs previously is that Jetdirect is among the ways that I can configure the printer.  So maybe that is one way?
Thanks for your time and insights!

Most older HP LaserJets must be assigned a new static IP address any time the router changed. Based on the excellent information in this thread and others, I compiled a complete protocol for doing this and in particular when using a newer (2013) Airport Extreme.  My printer is an HP LaserJet 4050N.
Connect the LaserJet to one of the Airport Extreme's ethernet LAN ports using a Cat5e cable.
    Open the Airport Utility
Click on the Icon of the base station to confirm the LAN IP address (usually 10.0.1.1).
Click the Edit button and then the Internet menu to display the Subnet Mask (usually 255.255.240.0).
    Close by clicking Cancel.
    On the LaserJet
Click the green ‘GO’ button until the display reads ‘Offline’
Click ‘MENU’ 7 times or until ‘EIO 2 JETDIRECT MENU’ shows
Press ‘ITEM’ button until ‘CFG NETWORK=NO *’ is displayed
Press ‘VALUE’ button until value reads ‘YES’
    Press ‘SELECT’
Press ‘ITEM’ button until ‘CFG TCP/IP=NO*’ is displayed
Press ‘VALUE’ button until value reads ‘YES’
    Press ‘SELECT’
Press ‘ITEM’ button until ‘BOOTP=NO’ is displayed (or press ‘VALUE’ button until value reads ‘NO’ and then press ‘SELECT’)
    Press ‘ITEM’ button until
‘IP BYTE 1=XXX’ is displayed and where I have put ‘XXX’ using the ‘VALUE’ button enter the first number of the ‘IP’ address displayed in ‘Airport Utility’ (usually 10).
Repeat this procedure for ‘BYTE 2, 3 AND 4’ by using entering a value each time using the ‘VALUE’ button and then pressing ‘SELECT’ before finally moving onto the next ‘IP BYTE’ value using the ‘ITEM’ button.
After all of the ‘IP’ values have been entered pressing the ‘ITEM’ button will display ‘SM BYTE 1=XXX’ – this is the ‘Subnet Mask’ value. Follow the same process as for the ‘IP’ address and enter the values given in the ‘Ethernet’ pane in ‘Network’ under ‘System Preferences’.
After entering the final ‘Subnet Mask (SM)’ value (BYTE 4) press ‘SELECT’ and finally press the green ‘GO’ button.
Open System Preferences and click on "Print & Scan".
Click on the ‘+’ tab on the left of the ‘Printers’ Pane.
    Click on the ‘IP’ tab.
From the drop down 'Protocol' menu select 'Line Printer Daemon'.
In the Address field enter the ‘IP’ values that you entered in the printer except change the last digit (usually 1) to 100 (usually 10.0.1.100).  (The base station can manage more than 100 IP values and this ensures the first 99 other assigned IPs will not conflict.)
In the 'Print Using' menu choose a Driver/Model (if an appropriate one is not set automatically).
    Click ‘Add’.
Close the 'Print & Scan' window.
The Printer name will appear as the IP address you assigned in the 'Printer' pull down menu in the Print window of your applications. Select it to print to that printer.
