USB 2 Driver for 15" powerbook G4 Driver simply available or drive requir
Hey guys, for this said computer, which has a usb1 drive...is it possiblt to upgrade it to a usb2 drive simply by adding software, as with a PC? or do you have to get a usb2 drive hardwear for it to work too? Cheers, Jonothan
...but my friend assured me that i would just be able to download some software as, he says, you do with a PC.
You have to download driver software for any USB2 adapter if you're using it in a PC. The Mac USB2 drivers are built into OS X (10.2.8 or 10.3.4 and up). So it's a bit simpler to get one up and running on a Mac.
USB2 requires a hardware controller that's part of the card. That's why it isn't possible to upgrade any computer from USB 1 to USB2 with software alone.
The reason USB2 adapter cards are "ugly" is that a USB female port doesn't fit into the thickness of a PC Card — so the port or ports must extend outside the Powerbook's case.

Video iPod Friendly (PCMCIA) CardBus USB 2.0 for older PowerBooks ?
Anyone know of one that works with the new iPods ?
I had the same problem and can verify that the Adaptec USB2connect PCMCIA card (AUA-142OA) works like a charm. It provides two USB 2.0 outlets, which allows for both the 5G iPod and also new EyeTV hardware to work. This allows me to put TiVo'd shows on my iPod with relative ease.
DO NOT USE the Adaptec card with the two USB ports, the firewire port and the other tiny Sony firewire port. Even sticking it in your PCMCIA slot will cause the computer to COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. In other words, DON'T use this one:
http://www.compusa.com/products/productinfo.asp?productcode=314360
DO use this one:
http://www.compusa.com/products/productinfo.asp?productcode=314362
I have an older version of the Adaptec USB 2.0 card that I used with a graphics tablet, and it worked great too. Frankly, I was stunned that my Powerbook had only USB 1.1 slots, but whatchya gonna do.
I was tempted to try the COMPUSA brand USB 2.0 card reader, as I think it was only $19.95. Perhaps someone out there might like to experiment - if it works, that's insanely much cheaper. -
Powerbook USB/External Drive Argh!
I bought an external drive, it didn't work due to the G4 USB's being under powered - so I went and got a USB hub which finally got it working.
The problem is that no matter what I'm doing, after a while the drive just suddenly hangs. It has two lights on the enclosure and the power light goes out and it just stays on the drive access light. I can't do anything but unplug it and then wait ages again for it to power up and mount.
Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening? The drive is a Hitachi laptop sized SATA/5400 RPM housed in a G-Tech HD-250 enclosure.Hi, Daniel. I don't know why that's happening, but I think it would be useful, if possible, to connect the drive directly to a desktop Mac and see whether it behaves the same way — in which case I'd blame the problem on the drive itself, because desktop Macs don't have the same problem of very limited USB bus power capacity as Powerbooks do.

How to get source code for WinCE 6.0 USB Camera Driver for ARM4I Processor
Hi,
I am implementing USB camera driver for my mini2440 board which has an ARM4I processor. The sample code
"Windows Embedded CE 6.0 USB camera Driver" downloaded from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2ef087c0-a4ae-42cc-abd0-c466787c11f2
does not support ARM4I processors. When trying to generate in VS2005 Platform Builder my WinCE 6.0
image for mini2440 with the Third party catalog items "MJPEG Decompression Filter" and "USB CameraDriver",
the linker giver errors. Please advise where to find a working source code for USB (now revision 1.1
("full-speed") is supported in my WinCE 6.0 image) camera for my ARM4I processor. The code should
be in C# but C++ will be fine also.
Thanks,

Can I use a usb thumb drive for Time Machine?
Can I use a usb thumb drive for Time Machine backups?
Hello,
Yes you can use a (large) thumb drive. The most common format for a Time Machine backup drive is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Hope this will help. -

I have an older iMac 5,1 and the disc drive no longer works. I was hoping that I could the Apple USB super drive as a replacement, but the info on the super drive page says compatible with iMac 2012 or later. Does anyone know why it would not work for me?
A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it." Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct 25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
Hopefully this helps.
Good luck & happy computing! -

Tips for working with USB floppy drives
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on working with USB floppy drives in Archlinux.
One thing I've noticed is that trying to use mkfs.msdos on my USB floppy drive directly doesn't seem to result in a usable disk (it's mountable, but reports that I don't have enough space available to copy files), but if I use the command on an image file the same size as a floppy disk and then use dd to copy the blank image to my USB drive I get a disk that's perfectly usable. Anybody know what the deal is with that or how I might be able to successfully format a disk in fewer steps (other than keeping the blank images around and just using dd to format the floppies, haha)?
Also, I'd like to hear any other tips or tricks any of you have for working with USB floppy drives. They just seem so much more usable under Windows as opposed to Linux, and that disappoints me a little.jmetal88 wrote:Okay, thanks guys. I haven't figured out the issue yet, but you're helping me narrow it down. I decided to run a df -h command after each try of formatting the disk this time. I tried the low-level ufiformat command followed by a mkfs.msdos on the device, using a 720k disk, and df -h showed 700k free on the file system. It's just not making the file system large enough (I believe the file I was trying to copy over was 710k or so). When I run mkfs.msdos on a 720k disk image and then dd the image over to the drive, df -h shows 713k free after mounting the drive. Any idea why mkfs.msdos isn't filling out the full 720k on the disk itself, but is on the image?
I would assume this happens because (as far as I can tell from skimming through the source over the course of a few minutes) mkfs.fat only applies floppy size heuristics to fd and lo devices -- your USB floppy drive is treated as a hard drive, and that leads to less-than-ideal default parameters. Run
fsck.fat -v
on the more spacious filesystem to figure out what options need to be set when you attempt formatting an actual disk. Or just make things easier by keeping newly-formatted blank disk images on hand so that dd and (maybe) ufiformat are all you need to worry about. -
USB thumb drive crashes MBP and PowerBook G4
Hi!
I have a USB thumb drive. It mounts on the Desktop (as two drives, which is not strange because it has both an internal 6 MB of memory and a 2GB SD card) and I can open them. But if I attempt to copy a file either to or from the drive, the Finder hangs forever.
This problem exists both on a shiny new MacBook Pro with 10.4.7, and a PowerBook G4 with 10.3---in either case, I must hard-reboot the machine.
DiskUtility says that the drive checks out OK.
Any thoughts? I tried reformatting the thumb drive, which worked temporarily; but when I added a file to the drive on another machine and tried to transfer it to the Mac, the thing hangs Finder again.
I don't have any problems with the drive on PCs, and I don't have the problem with other USB drives on the Mac.
XcottIt sounds like the file system is corrupt. I am assuming it's FAT32. I would reformat the drive partitions on a Windows machine and see if that helps.
Also, because it's a dual, you might want to make certain that you do not plug it into a hub or a keyboard but directly into your Mac's USB host port. It may need additional power...
Good Luck! -

Setup of USB Hard Drive on Airport Extreme for Time Machine
Hi all,
I upgraded to Mountain Lion a while back and am running the latest Airport Utility. Here's the problem: I can't get Time Machine to work anymore with my USB Hard Drive attached to my Airport Extreme. Is this setup no longer possible under Mountain Lion? Do I have to buy a Time Capsule? For the last couple of years I've had two MacBooks backing up with no problem to the USB drive connected to the Airport Extreme. Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks,
ChrisWhile you can do this as Kappy points out, there a few details that you might want to consider before you make the move.
1) Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple. While this does seem to work for some users, others (like me) have difficulty with corruption issues. The bottom line is that this is not a reliable method to back up your important data....and, no support or help from Apple if you do have difficulties.
Reference this Apple Support Document to confirm:
"Time Machine can’t back up to an external disk connected to an AirPort Extreme......"
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
2) If you move the iPhoto library to the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme....your original or master library now resides on that disk.....and you have no backup for the library.....when, not if.....the drive has a problem.
3) You might want to post in the iPhoto forum to ask if it is still an iPhoto requirement that only one user at a time can have iPhoto open with the shared library arrangement. -
Can I encrypt a USB hard drive that's not for time machine?
can I encrypt a USB hard drive that's not for time machine?
Yes, if it has the GUID Partition Map Scheme, but only by erasing it and choosing a new format.
See #2 in Using Disk Utility. -
Can I simply replace a hard drive with a new SSD and just install Yosemite from a USB boot drive onto the SSD? I recently bought a used MBP and it has absolutely no files on it except for the OS, and so I'm assuming I don't need to clone the current hard drive as I can just reinstall the OS onto the new SSD.
Honey_Revenge wrote:
Thanks.
Just a quick follow up question, is formatting the SSD with HFS+ done in Disk Utility?...
It's possible that the SSD will be set up for use on a PC, which means it will have a Master Boot Record partition table rather than a GUID Partition Table, which is what Yosemite needs. In Disk Utility, select the SSD and click the Partition button. Create a new Partition Layout and click the Options... button at the bottom. You'll likely see MBR is selected. Choose GUID instead and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the Format. -
CPU is very hot when using Thunderbolt display and mac attached USB hard drive for TimeMachine
Hello,
i've bought the new MacBook Pro 15" and a Thunderbolt display. Everything works fine for me due to the latest updates, but i experience an issue which i really don't understand. When i connect an usb hard drive for TimeMachine to my display it works like expected (CPU has a temperature of 64°C), but when i connect it to an usb port of the mac while using my display the CPU temperature goes crazy (spikes about 80°C) and it gets very noisy. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?
May this has something to do with the dual graphics adapter and how the system handles the data stream to thunderbold ports and usb devices? Which graphics card is used for the external display, the internal gpu or the adapter from ati? I've googled a lot but haven't found appropriet answers about these questions.Hi there ulairi9!
I understand how this would be a frustrating issue! I have an article here that can provide some troubleshooting steps for you, and can hopefully help you resolve the issue. That article specifically addresses the issue you are experiencing, and can be found here:
