USB 3.0 Dock not identifying primary monitor at startup

I've seen an issue recently where the Thinkpad USB 3.0 dock has trouble recognizing an external display that is set as the pirmary monitor. In this scenario, the laptop display is being used as an extended display and an external monitor attached to the dock using DVI is set as the primary. Upon startup the Lenovo splash screen displays on the laptop monitor (this is normal) and then afterwards the laptop monitor displays a purple screen and the external monitor goes into power saving mode. A blank purple screen is what is displayed on all extended monitors when Windows 8.1 is at the lock screen, which itself displays on which ever monitor is the primary.
At this point you are unable to do anything since the lock screen cannot be seen, and are required to hard reboot. After hard rebooting the issue typically clears up. This issue is occurring aftering doing a proper shutdown in Windows 8.1. In the case the laptop is a Yoga 2 Pro but I have also seen it occur on a Lenovo X1 Carbon, which leads me to believe this is a dock/software issue.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes - did you ever find a solution? I tried updating the Displaylink driver.

  • Lenovo S531 va USB 3.0 Docking. No secondary monitor?

Hi. I have been having the strangest of problems with my Lenovo S531 and usb 3.0 docking. I recently first-time installed windows 7 and updated the the machine completely. I then installed the USB 3.0 docking, and everything worked great just a few days ago. When I started to use the computer again yesterday, my secondary monitor did not come on at all. At first I thought it was just a windows bug, so I restarted the machine, but when it came back on the problem still occurred. Then I tried switching to another monitor of the same type...and nothing. This was starting to get really strange, so I tried to reinstall and update to the latest docking drivers, but still nothing! At this point I started to get desperate so I tried multiple ways to install the drivers towards the docking, and nothing. I even tried to use a new and unopened docking (identical to the one I was using) and the same problem still occurred! *taking a deep breath* I have no idea what is going on, and for some reason all my devices in the device manager is gone to. Is there anyone who have experienced a similar problem that can help me?
P.s I have tried to identify the monitor through the screen resolution tab, but it seems like the monitor is not even plugged in. (have also tried to just plug the monitor directly in my computer without the docking, and that works just fine)

The adapter should work for any machine with USB 3.0.

  • T440s Windows 8.1 Pro and USB 3.0 dock not recognising DVI LCD panel

Perhaps somebody could help me here.
When I connect the USB 3.0 dock to my T440s, I then cannot get the second LCD monitor to be recognised by Windows via the USB3.0.
The monitor is not being recognised as it is is not seen as one of the optional displays in the 'Intel HD Graphics control panel' window.
The driver however for the second monitor is fully up to date and it works fine when I connect the LCD to the VGA port directly on my computer.  Also the second monitor is being recognised partly by the windows OS as it comes up as a second screen under the 'screen resolution' window.
My set up is shown below.  I am thinking that perhaps there is an issue with either the NVIDIA or Intel HD graphics chip. I read somewhere that windows uses one or the other depending on the load.  I am worried that there is some problem with that mechanism.
Can anyone help or give me some advice on this?  All driver are up to date.

  • GB chooses to open on secondary monitor, not the primary monitor?  It was working fine, then started this.

New Mac Mini running new Garageband.  2 monitors.  Working fine, however, all of a sudden GB started to choose to open and not be able to move from secondary monitor.  What may have changed and how can I rectify this.  I would like GB to open on the primary.  All of applications open on primary monitor.

There is some confusing information in your post.  You say iMac g5 & 10.6.6.  The iMac g5 cannot run 10.6.6.  10.6.6 requires an intel machine.
    I'll assume iMac g5.
There have been many reports of capacitor problems with these machines.  There are capacitor replacement kits if you want to experiment with a soldering iron.
You could try a new battery.
Since you are having succes running the machine, I'd say it is a hardware problem. I've read a little on the capacitor problem.  Seems to fit what I have heard.

    Seems rather inexpensive.

  • USB 3.0 Dock not playing audio

I have an ASUS VivoBook running Windows 8 connected to a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock.  I just ran the setup disk and installed all the drivers, but the audio is still defaulting through the laptop speakers and not the audio jack on the front of the dock.
I looked in the device manager and it shows that the Lenovo USB Audio has no driver installed.  I selected Update Driver and did both the automatic check and browsed to the driver folders on both the install disk and in the Lenovo folder on the hard drive, but was unable to successfully install a driver.
I disabled and re-enabled it, I uninstalled and reinstalled, both were ineffective.
I updated the firmware on the dock and installed the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, but neither of those worked either.
This seems to be a rather uncommon issue, I have yet to find any reference to any others suffering this same problem.  I am not sure if the problem is Windows 8, the Lenovo drivers, or if this driver is standard on Lenovo laptops only so not included in the driver packs....
I would greatly appreciate any help that can be rendered.
    Thanks in advance.

The USB audio driver for this dock should be installed when DisplayLink graphics software is installed. The latest version can be found on our website here:
    http://www.displaylink.com/downloads
If you open up the Control Panel -> Sound and look at the playback devices, does the audio output appear in there? There is hot plug detection on the jack socket, so the audio can only be selected when headphones are plugged in.

My 2560x1440 monitor works fine on a desktop PC.
This dock (really more like a USB 3.0 to dual DVI adapter) works fine with my 1920x1200 monitor.
But this dock won't recognize my 2560x1440 monitor/the 2560x1440 resolution doesn't get detected.  This problem happens with NVidia Optimus Mode and Discreet Video modes on my ThinkPad W520, and this happens with Windows 7 x64 SP1 or Windows 8 Release Preview.

    Any ideas?

    Hey Jimbo!
At this point, it's looking likely that the dock's driver and/oor firmware isn't supporting 2560x1440, since using a DisplayPort (from W520 port) to DVI-D Accell adapter allows my to work fine with my video driver:

    Here's the monitor:

so still eager to see if the DL-3900 chipset's capabilities to drive 2560x1440 will be enabled at some point.

In FCP5 my settings have gone awry with Default Audio showing 'everwhere' except in the Timeline Settings Audio Output where I note "Load Audio Preset" refuses to quit and let in Default Audio as my setting.
I get audio from the computer as if the View setting is not on All Frames when it actually is. The video plays quite clearly in the monitor with the audio coming from the MacPro.
Repairing and verifying permissions led me to verify HD which produced - "Disk Utility stopped verifying Macintosh HD because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS volume checked. Volume needs repair."
Using Disk Utility I again tried to get into disk repair for the HD. Greyed out. Used the install startup disk utility and got the same result so I now am stuck and can't finish off projects in FCP because of the audio error.

You ARE running v5.1 on your intel machine - correct? If not, that could be the source of your problem.
    If you are running v5.1,
The first time you run FCP Attic, simply TRASH the preferences and restart the system. The program will generate new preference files with the default settings.
Once you get the application stable - then use Attic to BACKUP the known to be good prefs. If you run into corrupted preferences later, simply RESTORE back to operable versions.
Diskwarrior 4 is available but, if you are upgrading from an earlier version, it is only available on CD. It takes a couple of weeks to ship it. If you are purchasing a new version, I believe you can download and burn your own CD.
Reinstalling FCP doesn't fix as much stuff as you'd think.
    Try this.
-Boot up the computer and go to System Preferences>Accounts
-Click on the '+' at the bottom of the list of accounts to create a new user account. Call it whatever makes sense but be sure to give it admin privileges.
-Log out of your current account into the new account.
-Launch FCP. Do things work as they should?
-If so, you definately have an FCP preferences issue and Attic usually takes care of these
-If not, you have other problems and should start thinking about a complete wipe of the hard drive and a reinstall of the OS and applications from scratch.
    report back.

  • Recommendations for external monitor in combination with USB 3.0 dock and X1 carbon touch

    Dear Community,
I'm waiting for my X1 carbon touch and USB 3.0 dock and keyboard/mouse to arrive any time soon. However, I'd be glad to get some help/recommendations on external monitor choice.
For instance, the new HP envy 27" caught my eye, since it includes speakers, but it comes with HDMI and Displayport connections only. As far as I understood, video connection itselft shouldn't be a problem using a DVI to HDMI adaptor, but how about the resolution of the X1 vs. a HD+ monitor, and how do I use the audio on this monitor (don't want to use the microphone jack in front of the dock, as it should look as minimalistic as possible)?
Is there a solution? via usb 3.0? or should I better consider another monitor? Anyways, DVI or HDMI, I don't want to connect a separate audio system to the dock. Any recommendations, or is it one of those gadgets that  has not been thought through well enough and you need to wait for the next generation to be developed?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Cheers, jcd

Since you don't want to use the jack on the dock, you could usethemini-DisplayPortontheX1cTouchasyourvideooutputoption because the version of DP on the X1c Touch includes the ability for audio to streamed over the DP connection in addition to video. This would require a compatible DP monitor.
You'll also want the monitor to support audio over the DP connection. The X1c Touch's graphics supports the output of an audio stream over DP and the machine should be be capable of this. This gives you two cables connecting to the X1c Touch -- the DP cable for audio and video and the USB 3.0 cable connecting to the dock. The dock would be attached to keyboard, mouse, USB accessories, and Ethernet (if necessary).
As far as what to look for in a monitor, my general recommendation is Dell Ultrasharp. They tend to be a good deal for an IPS monitor with at least an sRGB gamut and a solid warranty. I've never bothered to attempt to stream audio over DP because I have separate speakers for audio. In the same way that my last 3 laptops have been ThinkPads, my last three monitors have been Dell Ultrasharps. The graphics in the X1c Touch should be fine running a 1920x1080, so I wouldn't worry about resolution. It can be a little jarring to use monitors side-by-side when they have different pixel densities, so you'll likely end up treating them as separate display surfaces. I often have e-mail and Pandora open on my T420's screen while I'm doing the bulk of my work on my main monitors. If you think you'll be touching the screen a good bit, then you might want to look into buying a touch capable monitor. Otherwise your brain can become easily confused because it'll begin to think that all computer screens are touch-capable and you'll reach out and try to touch your desktop monitor without thinking.

  • Kensington USB 3 Super Speed Dock not functioning

I have a Kensington USB 3.0 Super Speed Dock connected via a USB cable to my 13" macbook air (purchased in January 2014). Mid2013, 1.7 GHZ. Intel core i7. 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB
Since upgrade to Yosemite the dock is not recognized by the macbook air.
I have a second monitor running through the dock and this monitor is not visible. I also have a backup drive hooked up through the dock and this does not function either since the upgrade to Yosemite.
I spoke with kensington and we upgraded the display link driver with no success.
Any thoughts on how to get my second monitor working? The first monitor is connected from DVI to thunderbolt port. The second monitor is connected from VGA to USB 3.0 to the kensington dock.

I've discovered it's not that USB 2.0 is not working. 3 out of 6 usb ports/busses seem to work properly. The other three seem totally dead. Obviously this was not the case under kernel 3.9.9-1. Downgrading to kernel 3.10.2 made no difference.
In practical terms this means that I can use my printer and access my external drive if I use the right port/bus. And I could probably work around the problem by plugging a USB hub in one of the working ports. But I would be happy to get rid of the error messages and have all 6 usb busses working as they did before...

Usb Controller not Identified in device drivers.Somehow I just cant get USB Controller Drivers for this laptop and Windows 7. I read all the posts on this site and none of them helped.Do you maybe know the exact drivers so l can add them to windows 32 bit directory and manually install them as all other methods failed. I attach a drivers screen print.

Solved this in an unorthodox way. I had a Lenovo driver disk for a machine that also uses AMD and therefore likely the same chipset. I installed the usb drivers for the Lenovo from the Lenovo disk and it worked ! Attached is all the USB  controllers it now finds.I attach the new screenshot of devices So if anyone have a similar problem, try the Lenovo USB drivers. I find it peculiar that Toshiba doesnt have these USB drivers on their download page for my model Satellite L875D-S7332. Maybe they should add it. It took a good 5 hours to try and fix this using Toshiba's driver page.

I have tried different confgurations in Preferences->Playback, but get the same reult every time.  I have to force quit when I get the black box, as I am unable to access any other PP options.  Has anyone else run into this, and if so, is there a solution?  I have seen that there has been a 'transmit' issue, but that does not seem to resolve this particular problem.  Thanks!

I do hate replying to my own post but I thought I would post here how I fixed my problem in case anybody else ends up here with a similar one.
To be clear, I have 2 monitors and when I enabled transmit the full screen playback would be overlayed over my Premiere workspace on monitor 1 even though I had specified monitor 2 as my video device in Preferences > Playback.
It appears that at some time in the last few months (I have a vague memory of this) I had decided to check out the 'improvements' in the way Mavericks handled multiple monitors. I created a couple of spaces in Mission Control at which point the Applications in the dock gained an extended OPTIONS menu  on the context menu (the one that pops up when your right click on the app icon in the dock). I knew this extended menu was there because the Apple website told me so.
The extended OPTIONS menu on my 2 monitor setup now contained ASSIGN TO > ALL DESKTOPS; DESKTOP ON DISPLAY 1; DESKTOP ON DISPLAY 2; NONE.
After trying out the different options to see if the operation was consistent with Apple's explanation and whether I wanted to work with spaces I decided that I didn't so I removed the spaces I had created in Mission Control.
Removing the spaces removed those extra ASSIGN TO menu options although I wasn't aware of that at the time.
A few days later  I went to enable TRANSMIT when editing in Premiere Pro (which I had used successfully before) only to have the problem described in this thread. I stupidly credited this problem to a recent CC update and when the CC 2014 update didn't correct it I started to look elsewhere.
Cut to the end and the solution  - - after proving that a new test Mac user account did not exhibit the problem I returned to my user account, enabled some spaces in Misson Control, changed the ASSIGN TO menu to NONE for Premiere Pro (the default) and then the TRANSMIT function worked correctly, the full frame playback was assigned to the correct window.
Ok, the last  paragraph may suggest I knew what to do but I didn't, I  had spent a lot looking in the user library to look for differences until I stumbled across this.

  • Thinkpad T420 with Dock 4338 Dual External Monitors won't work

    Hey Everyone,
I recently purchased a T420 with Dock Model 4338 and am trying to connect two external monitors.  I want to have my desktop visible on my primary monitor with laptop closed and that desktop extended onto my second external monitors.  Both external monitors are Dell 19", one is being ran through the VGA port on the dock and the other is a VGA cord that I put a VGA to DVI-D adapter on to run off of one of the DVI Ports on the dock.  I can get my desktop to display on the main external monitor, and everything detects the other monitor fine, but the extended monitor remains black.  The screen is on, and recognized as the button light on the monitor is green not yellow and i can scroll my mouse over to that window and i lose the mouse so it's extending just not visible.  I have made sure that both monitors work by checking each individually in the VGA port and they are operational, but the DVI-D port doesn't seem to work on my second monitor.
I have done some pretty extensive searching and can't seem to get this to work.  At my job I have a T430 with the same dock and dual monitor setup that took no time and works great.  Does the T420 just not support this?
    All help is appreciated.
    Thank you all,

    Solved!

DVI-D don't support passive dvi to VGA adapter. You are better off with a displayport to VGA adapter, as they are cheaper then a dvi-d to VGA converter.
