USB 3.0 external drive extremely slow on Macbook Air 2014
Dear Apple Support Team & Folks in Apple Community,
Seriously, I have a problem with my new Macbook Air 2014 which has equipped with USB 3.0 port. I read through the forum and hardly find a solution for this.
Recently, I plugged in my USB 3.0 external drive and expect that it would reach the same file transfer speed as that on my PC. Instead of 625 MB/s (5 Gbit/s), it was hardly reaching 60 MB/s (480 Mbit/s) to my surprise! Sounds like Macbook Air doesn't recognize USB 3.0 device properly. I have tried Western Digital and Seagate devices but failed to get reasonable transfer speed on my Macbook Air.
I tried it again with my USB 2.0 external drive on Macbook Air and only got the transfer speed around 15 - 20 MB/s which is disappointing.
Any patches or Firmware updates would be appreciate!
I have OS X 10.9.3 already with EFI and SMC update patched by App Store.
I would be interested to know which consumer grade non-raid external harddisk that could reach 6xx mb/sec.
The speed you mentioned should be normal, since most of these are 5400rpm drives (asumming it is 2.5 inch).

Magic Mouse extremely slow on Macbook Air (late 2010)
Hi All,
Just switched from PC to Mac - everything is fine and i'm very excited about it.
There's one major issue for me and that's with the Apple Magic Mouse, it feels extremely slow and sluggish - nothing like Mice i've used in Windows.
Now, it seems that third party software fixes this (Mouse Acceleration Preferences Pane i.e.) but i don;t see why it should be prefect out of the box.
Any ideas ?
Thanks,
HaimHi Tom,
Thanks for your quick reply. I am not convinced it is a hardware problem. For if I hold the key that is faulty pressed for a few seconds it works, and the also works for a while before it stops working again. This to me seems like it is software based. Is there a secure way to test software vs. hardware e.g. by booting from an external image into a shell only? I do not think I have an image on a usb, is there any online server that I can connect to to try it?
Thanks again

Cineware extremely slow on Macbook Pro 2014
Hello, I recently bought a new Macbook Pro, but when I import a C4D file using Cineware it goes extremely slow. Every time I click (while the 3d file is on the stage) it takes at least 10 seconds before something happens, even when I put a simple cube.
The Cinema 4D software itself is working as it should be and is not slow.
There's no way to work properly this way, does anyone know what the problem might be and how I could solve it?
I didn't have this issue on my 2011 Macbook Pro.
My specs:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)
Processor: 2,2GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536MB
After Effects 13.2.0.49
Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite
Thanks in advance.2.2GHz Intel Core i7 processor
16gb RAM (upgraded from 8gb)
Intel HD Graphics - AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB
It wasn't exactly going smooth on the 2011 one, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the one I have now.
I don't know if this is relevant, but video games run much better on the new one.
Also I cant select GPU under ray-tracing in the AE preferences > Previews > GPU Information. It says 'GPU not available - incompatible device or CUDA driver'. I've installed the CUDA driver, but I suppose it's worthless since I don't have an NVidia graphics card?
I don't know too much about hardware, but I hope it helps -
How do I transfer my iTunes library from an external drive to my new macbook air?
I have an 8 year old MacBook Pro that has a small hard drive. So 8 years ago I put all my songs (35GB) on an external drive. I just bought a MacBook Air that has 256 GB of space and would like to transfer all my songs, movies, etc. to it and stop using the old hard drive. Can anyone help me with how to do this? Thanks.
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Music/ as the folder's path, and drag the entire iTunes library, including the database files, to it.
Alternatively, you can drag the entire library to any location on the internal drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and choose it.
If you only put the songs and not the database files on the external drive, drag it to the internal drive and from there to the library in the open iTunes application window.

External Drive for iTunes new MacBook Air
I recently upgraded from a MBP (2009) to a new MBA. I have always had my iTunes directory on an external drive. (For the last 3 MacBooks I have had...) so I know how to properly map iTunes to the drive, etc...
When I finished setting up the new MBA - I attempted to access the External Drive hooked up to my new TimeCapsule. However iTunes would not recognize the database. (I set the new location as directed)
I then disconnected the External Drive, and connected directly to the MBA - and attempted the same - with no luck.
The only way I seem to be able to access anything on my iTunes is via iTunes Match.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance..Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Music/ as the folder's path, and drag the entire iTunes library, including the database files, to it.

OSX can no longer find USB 3.0 external drive
My macbook air was able to read from my USB 3.0 external drive a couple weeks back when I last plugged it in prior to yesterday. Yesterday, when I plugged the drive back into the computer though, my machine was unable to detect the drive at all. It was not in finder, the desktop, or disk utility. Nor was it visible with the "diskutil list" command. I plugged the drive into a separate windows PC, which was able to access it fine. I scoured online for some tips, and ended up trying to use the usb prober tool, which didn't work. The drive has its own power adapter, and is not bus-powered. It turns on whenever I plug it in, but my machine is not able to detect it. I do not have another USB 3.0 device to test the macbook air with, but I have used other USB 2.0 external drives, which are detected by my macbook air fine. I updated to 10.8.3 before I plugged the USB 3.0 drive in, but I am not sure if that would be the cause of this issue. Are there any other tips that I could try that may remedy this issue? Any advise would be much appreciated with this predicament.
Try restarting your Macbook then plug the USB External Drive again and see if that works.
if all else fails - try doing a SMC RESET and see if that sorts it out for you.
Good luck -
945GT Speedster-A4R - and USB 3.0 external drive
Hello
I just got a USB 3.0 external drive, which I wish to connect to the 945GT Speedster-A4R board. However when the external drive is connected, the board will not boot, but hang in the post screen right when initialising memory.
If I connect the external drive after windows log-on, it works fine.
Anything I can do to be able to boot the board with the external USB 3.0 drive already connected ?
Br.Thanks for the fast reply !
However I don't see that option in the BIOS.
I see the following options:
USB Controller [Enable/Disable]
USB 2.0 Controller [Enable/Disable]

Why does my Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive keep disappearing?
Hi All,
Having major problems with a Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153160). External drive contains Western Digital 2TB drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136891). I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3 on a 2012 Mac Mini.
Basically, I can plug-in or turn the drive on, it mounts fine. Can run a Time Machine Backup. At some point (and I think it's when the computer goes to sleep), the drive hangs and I can no longer access it. Time Machine will hang on "Looking for backup disk". Drive will still appear in Finder, but I cannot "Eject" it. I've also tried to do a "umount -f" on it from the Terminal. Disk Utility still "sees" the device and the disk (partition?), but can't run a repair.
The only way I've found to fix this problem is to reboot the machine. I've crawled through the System log, but I don't see anything that points to a problem.
What else can I check? I'm have no idea if it's the hard drive, the external USB enclousure, Mac OS X, or the Mac Mini that's the problem. Please let me know if there is more information I could provide to help solve this problem. It's really frustrating!!!
Thanks!
-BenI received an answer from Thermaltake technical support. I asked if perhaps there was a firmware upgrade to prevent their drive from disappearing. They wrote on 22/04/2013:
Thank you for contacting Thermaltake Customer Service.
No firmware to do it. Just set system to never sleep. System will cut/disconnect the USB when it into sleep mode.
I wrote back saying I have never had to do that with other USB devices. And I routinely allow my system to Sleep. Is that an issue with their drive housings? They replied on 23/04/2013:
that is issue with sleep mode.
I don't know if this occurs with other USB 3.0 drives and Time Machine. Somehow, I doubt it. Anyway, it sounds as though my Thermaltake is destined for eBay... -

Help! Seriously....
I updated to Yosemite the other day and since then my Macbook is extremely slow...
It is really annoying, especially because I have no clue what the reason could be.
I would really appreciate if anyone has an idea how to fix this.
Apple doesn´t seem to know the answer! (What a let down...)
Thank you very much for taking your time!
Some of the problems:
+ The fan is running much more often now
+ MacBook gets very warm
+ Battery drain is extremely high
+ Animations and scrolling inside OS not fluent anymore
I have already tried the following:
+ new install
+ verify disk permissions
+ SMC-Reset
+ PRAM Reset (Cmd+P+R)
Here comes my report, I really hope anyone can help me with that.
I am really disappointed of Apple... What a let down!

To check whether the FileVault is the culprit, go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy --> FileVault to see if encryption is in progress.. For me the blue bar was less than a quarter with status 'estimating time remaining'..
Then open Terminal and type in: sudo fdesetup disable
It will then ask for the admin password (to be it asked twice), then it was disabled... Back to normal life again..

Hi all,
Recently moved into a new place and now have my external HDD plugged into my iMac as a backup.
Just went to backup my MacBook Air, which has used the drive previously, but always through USB.
Now trying to backup wirlelessly so I do not need to remove from my iMac, but got this message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/3TB Seagate Expansion Drive-1/Toby’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” could not be created (error (null)).
Have tried to reset without success. Any suggestions?
ThanksYou might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.
The same error message? Try hooking your backup drive to your computer and run Disk Utility Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. -
Macbook pro 2012 is slower than macbook air 2012
I have found that my macbook pro 2012 13" (non retina) is slower than macbook air 13" my co-workers own. all macbooks have same softwares and versions.
Macbook pro has better processor but Macbook Air is faster. I guess it is because of Hard drive in pro vs SSD in Air. so my questions are:
Does anyone have a same exprience?
and if I change my HDD to SSD can i beat macbook pro in speed?
waiting for your quick answers because I am feeling bad these days.
Thanks in advanceTake a look at my one and only user tip - Upgrading Your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive.

Loading Adobe Photoshop on my MacBook Air (2014) without an optical drive
My lab at the University already has Adobe Photoshop. I am wondering how do I download it on my new MacBook Air (2014) without an optical drive.
Another query is about the usability of photoshop on MacBook Air. Mine is a 1.4Ghz, 128gb, 8mb (RAM) MAB. I am not a heavy user of Photoshop, but I need it once in a while for improving images from experiments. These images are mostly kept in a dropbox. I am wondering if the above specification sufficient.
Any help would be appreciated. ThankDownloads for most Adobe applications are available thru the following page:

I don't want to spend 60 pounds on a apple cd hard drive, so will any cd hard drive work with a macbook air?
As you quote the price in 'Pounds' I'm assuming you are in the UK!
You might want to consider one of these from Amazon. I have one on my MBA and it works well. -
Copying files from an external HD extremely slow!
Hi everybody.
Thank’s to read this message.
I’ve a MacBook Pro 13” (mid 2009) core2duo 2.26 Mhz whit 2GB ram and running Snow Leopard 10.6.2
The system runs perfect until i try to copy something from an external drive, takes a lot of time to copy it, for example a 600 mb file takes almost 15 minutes, thats ridiculous, the problem is only when the info comes from an external drive and not from the machine to an external drive.
I’ve tried whit tree different external HD and cables, whit four different USB flash memories, happened the same whit the SD slot and whit the CD drive, the size of the files or the content doesn’t matter is slow whit anything, I thought in the external drives format (FAT32 most of them) but happened the same whit the Time Machine disk whit HFS+ format, yesterday i copy a 4.5 GB folder whit videos and photos from time machine HD and took 4, yes 4 hours!!
Is a serious problem because while is copying a file uses all the machine resources and i can’t do anything else until finish writing the file. Also i think is not an Snow Leopard problem, cause i tried to install Windows XP whit Bootcamp and in the part when the system copy files from the CD to the HDD happened the same, just took extremely lot of time and i had cancel it.
I already reset the PRAM, repaired the hard disc and made a test whit the Hardware test tool in the Snow Leopard disc but can’t find something wrong.
Well, thats the problem, any idea or comment is appreciate, thanks a lotHi Eww, thanks a lot for your answer
Thats a good idea, but why happens the same when i'm out of Snow Leopard, i mean installing windows xp goes very slow.
I think should be something that controls the in and out information flow, but i don't know.
Any other idea??
